Final Fantasy Type-0 HD coming to PS4/Xbox One (no Vita), Agito coming too (iOS/And)

Really? I can only laugh if true.

Come on, it is pretty clear from this Type-0 announcement that XV won't even make it to 2015.
That's not clear at all. An HD port/remaster/slight remake is not going to affect or mean anything in regards to their schedule of a mainline FF's release, by the same logic FFX | X-2 HD's release would have implied XIV ARR & Lightning Returns might be 2014 releases and X | X-2 HD only exists to fill in a void left by their delay. It more likely means they just have the resources to do this game now (whereas everyone and their mamas were tied to XIV ARR & Lightning Returns until late last year) and that they have an empty release slot in their calendar for a release like Type-0 HD in 2015, so they are grabbing the opportunity and bringing a game west which they've been looking a way to bring west ever since the PSP original was released.

Not many people are interested in getting a PS4 now, when they can have a better RPG lineup on the PS3
And that's a big problem. Whereas western devs have been making the transition to next-gen much more smoothly with cross-gen games and are starting to bring some major games like Batman: Arkham City, The Witcher III, Assassin's Creed Unity and the like exclusively to current-gen consoles, too many Japanese devs are still clinging on to PS3 almost exclusively, when they should AT LEAST have gone cross-gen with many of their games. Instead of investing in the future, they are just trying to squeeze every last drop from PS3, which will probably once again end up biting them in the ass.

I am not saying putting it on PS4 is a bad decision, but they should have looked into other platforms as well.
Your talking as if they didn't. Of course they did, they've even talked about how they've thought about pretty much every possible alternative for Type-0 (except probably Wii/Wii U...). They did look into it all & think about releasing the game on PSP, Vita, PS360 HD etc. and probably came to the conclusion that by the time Type-0 HD releases (I'm thinking late Q2 2015 at earliest, more likely sometime in (early?) Q3 2015), Vita will be even more irrelevant that it is now and PS360 will also be on their deathbeds with a majority of PS3 gamers having moved on. So being exclusive, as serving to Vita & PS360 would be to serve to already near-dead hardware or ones that are quickly diminishing to irrelevance in front of their PS4Bone overlords.

At some point you need to move on and I think it’s ok for SE to take the first step into the current gen. We don’t know when Type-0 will come out, might happen simultaneously with a release date announcement for FFXV, so then there would be a reason to get a PS4. Also, I wouldn’t say that JRPG fans have no interest in the console right now, since probably many, myself included, assumed that it will eventually become the JRPG console of choice and bought it just on this guess alone.

Though the most important thing is, someone who likes Final Fantasy isn’t necessarily a JRPG fan (I’m speaking of the western audience here), so Square doesn’t need to rely on this group to drive their sales.

Word of advice, never assume a game announced by SE is going to come out.

Well, when did you play it? I played it when it came out and I was affected pretty heavily. I can imagine that if someone played it today, it might not be as effective.

Pretty much. I could appreciate what they were going for, but after seeing how they can present things such events later, it loses part of the impact. I feel the same way at the likes of Aeris and the FFIV characters as well

S-E don't see the benefit of releasing a PSP game in English past the PSP's lifespan, even though a smaller company has like 3 being planned for a 2014 release.

It's not "didn't see the point."

They are likely to get far more money this way if they upgrade the game, and put it on a thriving, new console that is full of enthusiastic fans and has upward momentum. Fans that wouldn't necessarily buy the game a 2nd time if they already had it on PSP.

Also, this will give further exposure to their new game, Agito, when they time the release of Type-0 to coincide with it. It's smart business. Also, if Type-0 and Agito miraculously prove successful, they might have finally found their audience, and a way to continue the series instead of sending it out on PSP to die.

Yes, because having absolutely no latency is essential when playing a JRPG.

I played most of the Ground Zeroes side-ops on Vita.

Type-0 is actually an Action RPG, with timing as a game mechanic (Kill/Break Sights), so latency does matter. Latency is not so much a problem for turn based games, no, but I sincerely doubt we'll be seeing even optional "Wait Mode" style ATB systems on a mainline Final Fantasy game any time in the next decade (especially ones with XB1 releases where the audience is much less inclined to even XIII style Action-ish JRPGs than the Playstation base).

The series is dead.

The actual Square Enix can't even manage one full-scale Final Fantasy series. They aren't going to add the Type series to the mainline.

I was so happy yesterday when I went to sleep thinking about playing it on PS Vita and now I see this. I can't believe it, I just want Square Enix to suffer a very painful death.

Such a wild turn of events

How do you fuck that up?

I am happy its coming to PS4/XBO.... but having the Vita version paraded out and then swept away over some miscommunication...

WTF

There is more to this story somewhere

Don't think that will work. It'll probably appear in admist a whole host of next gen AAA releases in all its PSP glory. Don't know about you but, with such a vast amount of games in this world, I tend to play the "big" games of my Steam catalogue while the smaller ones languish. It's only been since they have been moving to Vita that I've been getting stuck into them.

All about getting the right game on the right medium, not about hitting the newest and hoping for potential.

They've always had plans to do just that. And it's not dead. They just finished Agito, one of their most impressive mobile games to date, if not the most impressive one.

SQEX has always managed to maintain a few FF sub-series, but they're usually on portable systems. We'll probably see those on mobile now. I'm willing to bet Agito is doing pretty well for them.

I just want Square Enix to suffer a very painful death.

They didn't have a trailer ready or anything.

They clearly reached out EARLY just to tell us so we could be happy about it. And you guys act like they killed your parents. Are you not at all happy the game is being localized and brought over like people have wanted since, what, 2010? 2006?

Having Final Fantasy in the name is pretty big IMO.

I've put 140+ hours into the game, and while it is an action RPG, it really has quite the window for pulling off attacks, the 'kill-sight' is the most time demanding activity, and it sticks around for well over a second so a few ms of latency really isn't going to hurt - it's not a fighting game.

I would never of thought that a nice little add-on feature has turned into such an excuse for shitty support.

It's something right.

I just think the whole situation is hilarious. I mean the translation team I was on releases our patch, this gets announced, misinformation on it being for Vita and now information on it being for X1/PS4. All within 1-2 days of each other. I honestly think this is amazing.

I'm really excited for an HD GILGAMESH though so I can't really be angry. I personally think it's kinda bullshit but you get 2 FF games on PS4 now so that's pretty cool.

S-E always has a lot of plans. And Agito is not what the Type series was planned to be. I wouldn't call the series continuing with more F2P automatic experiments as being alive.

Also iOS charts don't show the game doing well.

Ironically, it's probably closer to what it was initially in Agito. It was actually first announced as a mobile game. I wouldn't be shocked if they went back to earlier systems they had in place before they switched it to Type-0.

What bothers me most is the they refuse to consider Vita in Either arena

Clearly the Console AND Mobile game are good fits for the platform yet it is universally ignored

SE/Capcom really dont want to support it. Most of the other JP devs are on board in the homeland (Though Sega doesn't localize everything)

Its infuriating

It's not out of malice. SQEX literally carried the PSP in the west for YEARS almost single-handedly. They supported DS and PSP relentlessly.

Why would they switch? Because the sales are no longer justifying it, and at the same time, mobile is exploding. That is a fact that people here need to just accept so they stop taking this so personally.

I'm just happy they viewed the new consoles as healthy enough to justify localizing this game at all. And on real consoles too.

Yep, especially when they can charge it for full price instead of being priced as a portable game. They will need to sell less copies to breakeven or profit if that's the case.

Fans that wouldn't necessarily buy the game a 2nd time if they already had it on PSP.
Disagreeing on this part though. This game did not even see the light on western PSPs or handhelds. Given that the promotion for the game is oriented for western gamers clamoring for it for years, I don't see why people wouldn't buy it on a portable where the game was initially available.

Also, this will give further exposure to their new game, Agito, when they time the release of Type-0 to coincide with it. It's smart business. It makes all the sense (brand awareness, establishing a bigger/overlapping userbase for the franchise) if you look at it on a business perspective though it's more likely they will release the mobile game first before the full experience or vice versa. I can't see it launching at the same time because the marketing will be really difficult. Agito is not just a companion game..

It's not the top grossing game, but neither is it when it comes to consoles. My guess is that Agito in the long run will bring in more for SE than Type-0 will. F2P games can move around greatly depending on the promotions, I'm sure it will do just fine.

DrROBschiz: Not even Sony supports the Vita, we all saw their E3 presentation, it was nothing more than an accessory. By the time this game shows up in 12-18 months, no one will even remember the Vita.

Impossible to argue with this.

Last great games will be Freedom Wars, Project Diva f 2, and Gravity Rush 2. Then it's indie machine and remote play.

Is American internet that much better than Australian ? Because even using the 3G data connection (which is charged at ridiculously expensive rates), I get a heck of a lot more than a few ms of latency to my home network and then to the PS4 attached to it.

Hmmm, it varies greatly in the US, I'm sure there will be some cases where it is too slow, but that goes for PS Now, and all sorts of stuff Sony are betting the farm on. I would say that I am confident the Internet will keep getting better/faster, but the FCC are bought and owned by Comcast right now, so yeah, not making any promises. But if it doesn't get better, Sony's got some rough times ahead for their future plans.

Couldn't agree more. 2014 will be the greatest year of the platform (for me, at least). Maybe it would get 3-4 more localizations early next year then will be relegated to "just an accessory" status for PS4.

Sigh....

Lets enjoy the hell out of 2014 I guess

Gonna be Vita's last hurrah

I am a Vita owner, and would prefer it on my Vita too so I can play on the go, but I'm just happy it is coming to NA at all at this point... I'll take it on any platform that I own. PS4 being one of them.

Ill totally get it for PS4

But like with Child Of light I would prefer to play it on Vita (as with most RPGs and such)

Portable just suits me better lately...

Well, to be honest people have been saying this since 2012 and yet here we are. It will still be a niche product, but I don't see it being in a much worse situation than it already is.

At this point I'm not taking any bets on whether Gravity Rush 2 hasn't already been moved to Ps4 or not.

That would be amazing honestly. They should do that so the series can survive.

Believe me, I love my Vita too. But it's just not going to work out. It sucks because GR used all the Vita features so well. But I'd be excited by a PS4 version too of course.

yeah

Its been seeing a slow and steady growth and following (faster in japan than overseas) with some good momentum and buzz going for it (within its niche of course) leading up to E3 with the Mountains of game announcements (Tons of localizations)

Its just sad for both Sony and SE to fuel the hate and doom discussions once again just as Vita was getting comfortable and software sales were continuing to be healthy enough to justify all the games it does get.

What a damn mess.

I think they actually thought Borderlands 2 Vita would do well. Don't ask me why.

Personally, I don't think it will be. I just can't see it competing with the PS4 games available in the market.

It actually was a PS3 game, Gravity Rush 1. They were asked to move it to Vita after they started.

Man, I feel wounded just by thinking about all Shahid's efforts and the #jrpgvita movement that gave many people hope...

All I can say is that Square Enix took spot 1 on the most hated company nowadays, in my opinion.

IMO, it can only get better. With PSP support waning in Japan, maybe the Vita can finally come into its own over there. :|

I don't think they'll move Gravity Rush 2 (or whatever it's going to be called) to PS4 but anything is possible I guess... Maybe it could be cross plat?

I really hope we get Digimon Cyber Sleuth. ;-;

Glad to see it's finally getting a release over here. I will be picking it up. I wonder why they decided against releasing it on vita though, install base? Think it would be fairly easy though.

I'd rather it was on PS4 anyways not being a handheld fan. I do have a Vita but a PS4 version would have won out every time.

Weird they wouldn't port it there though and it's also weird to see it come to consoles but the userbase is far higher.

Complete mess up whoever made the mistake of posting coming to Vita though.

This and DQVII remake localization is making me loose sleep.

I'll play the last chapters of Bravely Default, and will take a long while before I buy something from these vampires.

Man, god knows how I'm pissed with Square Enix.
