Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

Between the rumors, leaks, and actual reveals Nintendo is only one character away from making me completely happy with the lineup (assuming the 4 cuts are what we're expecting).

If Simon Belmont ends up in the game as the final completely unexpected and unleaked character then every character at the top of my "want" list will have been added in to this game.

I'm still wondering what makes Wolf apparently on the chopping board.

Is it an Ike situation again?
Will he return buff if so?

The "Ike is cut" speculation was nonsense. He has a very distinct playstyle unlike Lucas and Wolf, and was also one of the first newcomers revealed for Brawl back on the Dojo.

I'd group Wolf more in with Lucas than with Ike and (personally speaking) it would be kind of crazy to get rid of the "Ness clone" but keep the second "Fox clone". Then again including Toon Link over Lucas is just as crazy.

Smash is one of the fewvfighting games I know of where absolutely every fighter has a good amount of fans.
Snake especially for those who got into smash because of his inclusion such as me.

This is one of the reasons why I get bothered by people wanting certain characters cut. People never seem to consider that every character has a large group of fans. Instead, they just think about the fact that they don't like the character or that the character doesn't fit into their arbitrary rules.

No cuts is the best possible outcome.

So can anyone confirm if the competitive scene has already canned this game?

Cause I've been reading a lot of Brawl 2.0 from them since last night as though that is EXACTLY what the final product will play like.

Someone on SmashBoards posted that Peachyhime (I think) said on Facebook that she had no hope for the game and that she just wanted to go back to playing Project M. Disrespectful honestly.

What would be the reaction to making Squirtle, Ivysaur and Lucas paid DLC? Probably something along the lines of that 'greedy' comment.

Beaten.

Personally I like the idea of DLC, but not really interested in Squirtle and Ivysaur, I'd buy them cause I'll buy any character DLC but neither lights my world on fire enough to get excited for. Lucas seems like perfect DLC material though

I also have no problem with characters who are cut for time or for resources getting finished as DLC, Smash is already such a massive game with tons of content eventually they have to go "STOP lets finish what we have". I would hope that more of the DLC characters are newcomers and not just "here are the melee/brawl vets we cut for time but now can finish"

Guys I was kidding with that Dark Pit Theory >.>
Maybe RosalinaX is Sal's leaker. :p

Yeah if any Konami character is in the game even if it's not Snake they'd have to give said character a major reveal, no way they'd let people just find out about it after the game launched.

I have to agree with this. However, there are hardware limitations on the 3DS is preventing a huge roster. If they went outright to give Wii U some exclusive characters, then no cuts would have to be done. The 3DS version is ultimately what is keeping the roster from becoming too large. I want Dr. Mario to be in this game, but I am realistic about the fact he has zero chance.

I don't remember hearing that and all

And for those wondering about the Rosalina X thing

Apparently her saying "Ness is back Lucas is likely gone" is from April 16th, of course I can't find the actual original post, but this comment predates the Gematsu one by almost 2 months FWIW
"Nothing much on returning I assume ness will be back, but idk about lucas."

He didn't even say Ness will be back. Doesn't know about Lucas. Sal's rumor said it differently.

The 3DS hardware limitations only affect certain characters like Ice Climbers who might be too much for the game to handle. It does not affect roster size.

However, I do certainly understand that no cuts is an unlikely scenario for other reasons. I'm just against wanting characters to be cut.

Weird that Lucas would be cut after only one appearance.

Then again, Ness is more iconic and has in a sense been brought back into relevance due to the multi-regional release of Earthbound on the Wii U VC.

If you had to pick one...

And unless the Star Fox characters have been more diversified, I could see either Falco or Wolf getting the boot. You don't want too much redundancy.

All cuts are after only one appearance

I think anyone saying Falco is getting cut is being silly lmao. Wolf? Sure. Falco? No way.

There has to be at least 2 StarFox reps, SF is still relevant enough (its SF64 3DS release and then this new game that's been confirmed to be in dev). And as we all saw last night, Fox is more popular than Bowser. That says something. Anecdotal, sure, but that's a pretty decent sampling size of Smash fans.

Again, you keep making sweeping statements like these without direct quotes to back them up, or you're taking something that Sakurai said to fit your own theory. Stop it. He said something about characters like Ice Climbers being difficult, not that the roster could be limited in number.

If the 3DS version was limiting the Wii U version so significantly, they probably never would have done it in the first place. Hell, the 3DS already has exclusive modes that the Wii U doesn't. The fact is, the number of SSB games have been far too small as to try and form patterns based on who got cut and who hasn't.

Toon Link practically destroyed the possibility of Falco and Wolf being removed based on "redundancy". The only possible reason I see them being removed is time constraints. Other than that, I'm very confident that they'll return.

The only character that might be cut due to 3DS hardware limitations might be the Ice Climbers, due to needing two models on screen for a single character (so, 8 models in a 4p match). That likely could be remedied by giving them lower poly models, and it shouldn't be too bad due to them being very cartoony and not even needing separate fingers due to their gloves, but, maybe I'm wrong and the sacrifices would be too big in spite of that, making them stand out very badly compared to other characters. Back in Melee, I remember that 4p matches with Ice Climbers could cause problems in some stages.

Either way, removal of any other character should have nothing to do with hardware. They aren't somehow more hardware intensive than characters that already are in the game, and the 3ds carts are so big space shouldn't be a problem either.

That's like saying people who were cheering when Samus/Ridley showed up in Melee's opening were cheering for Ridley. Very silly way to measure popularity lol.

Sakurai isn't someone who would give up just like that. And the 3DS version started first in the planning stages, and then because of the limitations, he wanted to do a Wii U version as well.

Just want to say...Hungrybox got robbed last night.

I felt like I was legitimately watching a wrestling game. Hungrybox was the Face while Zero was the Heel.

That last game was hype no matter which way you slice it though. It's clear that Zero had the advantage in mobility all around due to the character but damn, Hungrybox put up one hell of a fight.

The audio reaction to the Pacman reveal at the roundtable was recorded.

EDIT: You probably won't want to listen to the rest of their comments.

Seeing that it's a Videogamer audio for a Nintendo game I think I have an idea of what the rest of the comments are.

I honestly can't believe Sakurai wouldn't have Mewtwo in this game.

It's possible that Sakurai wanted Mewtwo in but Game Freak/The Pokémon Company said no. Sakurai has said in the past that Pokémon characters are decided by GF/TPC.

I'm going to cry when Sakurai keeps Ganondorf a clone after giving Palutena 12 unique special moves.

You saying this made me realise something... Couldn't we potentially declone a few characters with the customisation? Granted we can't take them online randoms...

Dumb Theory: Dark Pit is playable. If the Pac-Man trailer hinted G&W than the Palutena trailer hinted at Dark Pit :p

I still believe it's hinting at an alternate costume that gives Pit different dialogue to make him more like Dark Pit/Pitoo.

What would be the reaction to making Squirtle, Ivysaur and Lucas paid DLC? Probably something along the lines of that 'greedy' comment.

Beaten.

It wouldn't go down well. People would accuse Sakurai of holding them back for DLC purposes. It'd likely be the same case if Roy and/or Mewtwo were DLC as well.

I am mostly just guessing by file size. The biggest 3DS game has been around 4 GB. It would be hard to fit 50 characters and 12 stages in that file size. They are working on what they can do with the 3DS version first to decide who to put into the Wii U version. Ideally, I can imagine 48 characters with 11 stages if they compress the right way. Think like Resident Evil 3DS to the HD Wii U version. It is obvious that the 3DS version is the way they are planning out the Wii version. They are going to push the 3DS to its limits.

I'd rather see them give Ganondorf new moves for his base moveset then keep his classic specials as an option for customization. That way people who really like Captain Ganondorf can still use him but for the main non customized game he plays like a unique/new character.

I don't understand this argument that Ice Climbers will be cut because the 3DS can't handle a two-in-one character. If the 3DS can handle Rosalina, whose Luma can separate itself from her and act autonomously in a way Nana never has, why can't it handle Ice Climbers?

Speaking of Falco, he's the character I am most looking forward to customizing. He's my most used character in Melee and Brawl and being able to choose different variations of his specials and messing around with his stats sounds so appealing.

Anyone else excited for customization as much as I am?

...you know they can use 8GB carts right

Here are the limitations of the 3DS:
- Small screen with a low resolution
- Control options (there are videos of how they set up the controls for the 3DS)
- Hardware is weaker in some areas than the Wii
- Wi-Fi for online

And speaking of online, it seems Smash 3DS will use NNIDs. There is the possibility that they are just using the Nintendo Network logo which is what they use for any online game now.

However, there is this: http://www.smashbros.com/us/3ds/gamemode/entry1.html

Seems like you will be able to report people on the 3DS version as well.
No, but what that actually was is the crowd preferring PPMD to DJNintendo :P
That's the way I saw it lol.
I know I'm being silly :P.

Because this whole discussion is silly.
True. :p
