Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Hmm... so why mention it?

Clearly a stealth brag post :p

Just so people could get perspective. I'm looking forward to the game, obviously, I just underestimated how anticipated it was/how exclusive this alpha seems to be.

Also to curb people from begging me for it, because that's a very real thing

It's what nightmares are made of! Very much looking forward to playing tomorrow.

Got my code(s) and I'm good to go!

WE ARE IN DOOM

Sorry I should have expanded.... in a meeting and just wanted to read some other impressions and shoot out mine.

One issue is that often the world feels dead to me. But the main points are as follows...

These are all valid concerns. I haven't played the Alpha myself yet, but from watching the GB Quicklook and some streams, I think the way party invites are done should be fixed. In-game would be so much better. And from what I've heard, Bungie is taking most issues players have seriously, so maybe you should post this on their official forums.

From what I've seen, this is what I'd like them to fix:

- Add classic control schemes, like Bumper Jumper, Recon, etc.

- Add the option to remove the enemy health bars and damage numbers.

- Add the option to turn-off the music.

- Remove accuracy penalties for jumping, not using ADS, etc.

Fixing those things would make my hype for the game increase exponentially.

No it is not. The closest thing would be Jumper, and the only thing it has in common with Bumper Jumper is that L1 makes you jump. Every other button is still mapped like the COD control scheme. The classic Bumper Jumper would look like this:

LS: Crouch
RS: ADS
L2: Grenade
L1: Jump
R2: Shoot
R1: Melee
Triangle: Switch Weapon
Circle: Action/Reload
Cross: Sprint
Square: Ability

I'm so impressed with this game. It kept me up most the night last night, and I'm about to boot it back up right now this morning.

There is just something about the combat that is so damn satisfying. It was fun at first but being higher level and more experienced with the game only makes it more fun as carving through a group of enemies starts to feel like second nature.

The thing about the alpha is that there really isn't too much content-you can a majority of it in a couple hours- but I seriously cannot stop playing it. Doing random missions in freeroam and having a random fireteam come through and back you up is a feeling that never gets old, and is pretty much unique to Destiny. (Note, I'm not saying that I'm upset at all that the alpha doesn't have much content, it is an alpha. I'm just using that to say how much I love the underlying gameplay.)

My main criticisms are with the party system, which isn't as seamless as it could be in this type of game. For some reason if you're messing around in Explore, and then you invite a guy you met into your fireteam, he has to reload the whole map.

I cannot wait until more of you guys can play. It's going to be a fun couple of days.

Please, this can't be true, can it?!

They said it in one of the interviews yesterday. Either Gamespot or IGN I think. They stated that on top of things like the visual restrictions and needing to stick together, they also didn't want any "guests". They want everyone playing to be properly invested in the game. And I suppose, to them, having your own screen where you're the center of everything is part of that.

Apologies if this has been posted, but has there been any Titan or Warlock gameplay?

All I've seen is Hunter videos, and like 10 of them.

Thanks!

- Add the option to remove the enemy health bars and damage numbers.
That might be a bad idea, at least until you've encountered and memorized every boss in the game, because these numbers are your main (only?) source of feedback, so it might get hard to tell if you're doing any damage without all of that HUD junk.

Everything but this makes sense.

Why would they remove accuracy penalties for hip firing and/or movement and make it as accurate as aiming down the sight? It becomes more difficult to accurately aim a firearm when not using the sights or when on the move. Yes, it's a videogame... and yes it's Bungie... but accuracy penalties should ABSOLUTELY remain in the game, IMO. It forces one to think about what they're about to do and weigh their options...

Do i sprint around here and hip fire... do i jump here and ADS... do i cautiously approach this entry way already aiming... etc.

But alas.. different strokes.

Why is it a bad idea? Just have dmg numbers on as default, and then if players want to turn it off, let them.

Damage numbers are one thing, but I know I'd rather not have someone that can't see level differences and how much health/armor a boss has in my party. Being able to see that information is part of the design. If someone decides to be ignorant of that information, they could be a hindrance.

Downloading it now thanks to someone here :) Going to be streaming at http://twitch.tv/ptoponline once its done downloading, says a half hour.

Tough luck. I don't want a bunch of numbers crowding my screen when I'm not min/maxing. Having it as an option is the correct way to go, as it really hurts immersion.

Ooof, that's a bummer. I hope that's something that can be remedied, but I'm kinda doubting it at this point.

I sure hope I get a code today, I'm getting pretty stoked about this game, finally.

It takes place way in the future with all kinds of technology advances. Is it that hard to consider it, along with the UI, as part of the display shown on the inside of your helmet?

Future cult wants fuel samples analysis of the golden age.

I'm standing right next to a fuel tank. Is the mission borked?

When you start a pvp match do you only have access to normal ammo?

According to Eurogamer's PvP preview you start with normal and a limited amount of special ammo, no heavy ammo.

Each weapon type uses a corresponding type of ammo. Primary weapons use common ammo, which is dropped by enemy players when you kill them. You start each round with plenty of that good stuff. Special weapons use special ammo, coloured green in the game world. This is rarer, and is looted from caches dotted around the map. You start each round with a limited amount of special ammo, but there's plenty to go around so you're never normally short.

But you start a round of Destiny's competitive multiplayer with no heavy ammo. You've got your heavy weapon equipped, but you can't use it. You have to wait for the game to drop heavy ammo onto the battlefield, but it only does so a few times a round.

I need to stop reading this thread and watching videos. This is torture. I can't remember the last time I wanted to play a game so bad.

Has anyone been able to locate a heavy weapon in alpha yet? I'm almost positive I saw a dude using some sort of rocket launcher in pvp. I haven't come across any yet so I'm not sure if they are in alpha or not. There is definitely a 3rd slot for it in the inventory though.

I bought a heavy machine gun from the gunsmith and my brother got an RPG from a random drop I think.

A bunch of numbers being read off? Yes. Now if they said stuff like impact chest or there were X Rays scans like Sniper Elite to show damage feedback, that's different.

Those are just different ways of doing the exact same thing. Numbers, words, X-ray shots in slow motion are all ways to show damage feedback. Why are the latter two better than the former? Just a preference?
