E3 2014 Super Smash Bros Impressions (Best Buy Smashfest / Invitational)

I plan on getting to Best Buy around 6pm.

For those of you there, how many people are already there waiting to play? Are there actually lines already?

FUCK MAGEMEN

SANIC WON THE INVITATIONAL

I like how there are still random Pikachu signs in this lol

Well I missed some of them :(

It's the beginning of his FS, he flips a mat under the opponent launching them into the air where he performs night slash.
Thanks!

Going to Bestbuy soon. Probably will play Samus; I'd like to both try the new characters and look at the differences with the old, but from the sound of it the stores are pretty packed and I won't get many games.

I played smash at the dundas best buy! Was one of the first 4 to play with my friend who was with me and a donkey kong player! I played rockman and mac and it was a blast both characters rule! Really tired from the line so ill go into detail later but im so hype for smash!

Best Buy line is way too long.

There's only one demo, 2 matches for each group of 4.

They didn't really set it up so we all can at least watch.

I tried to watch, security kicked us out.

Line is way too long.

Sucks though, but I'll keep reading up on impressions and watching some YouTube vids.

Reposting my impressions from the Smash thread.

Just got back from the Best Buy event, it was awesome. We got to play two matches of Smash Run, and two FFA matches on the Wii U. I only got KO'd once.... unfortunately I also only got one KO.

Only saw the Smash ball once in all 4 matches. I was hoping to see if Zelda has the same FS, but Mega Man got the smash ball

The game is a whole different beast when compared to Melee and Brawl. The videos don't do it justice.

Stages I played on were Tortimer Island, Rainbow Road, Coliseum, and Skyloft

They also let us line back up to play again if we wanted.

Sonic's "white" color looks like the regular color covered in white powder. Really weird.

Also every character has only three of their colors for the demo so no Dark Pit.

So when I said it wasn't that packed. I could not be any more wrong, the line ended up being enormous and getting there 1.5 hours early still made me wait an hour to play. I ended up winning both 2 minutes matches with 3 KOs and 1 death a piece using Link and Kirby. Here are my early impressions.

First off, three color alts per character, did not get the chance to see if Female Villager was an alt or not.

Secondly, Pro Controller only, while not bad felt a bit awkward to use for the first time in a Smash game, kept mixing up my jump and special/attack buttons. With more time I'd probably adjust, but thank God for the Gamecube option.

Third, it does seem like Link got a buff, especially his down air seems to be stronger and he seems to be slightly faster. Not quite Project M Link, but much better than Brawl Link.

Fourth, Mega Man seems to be a low tier character while Kirby and Zero Suit Samus do appear to justify their early high tier impressions. Greninja is a bit floatier than others, but still looks to be a good character as well.

Sorry for nothing technical, but the demo was very fun, it had a high turnout, look forward to playing Smash on Wii U with a GC controller and worry a bit about how the 3DS version handles based on the Pro controller layout.

Edit: Also, Zelda's FS is indeed the Light Arrow

1) Nintendo rep said no pics or videos so I had to do some quick snaps aka sorry they are shitty

2) Best Buy had 2 employees with vests on with 2 XLs tethered to each vest so you could play 3ds version while waiting in line. Said main game had a loading bug so we had to play Smash run.

3) Got to play 2 rounds of Wii U version. Everyone had a pro controller.

4) I went in with the idea of only playing new characters. I played Greninja and Little Mac

5) It was set up for 2 min matches

6) Had a decent line of 100+ people

7) Gave out free swag

PS: Will update later with more detailed impressions + pics of my Mario Kart Flag & 2 Smash Buttons

Saw the line at mine and said fuck no.

Went in and bought $10 Zombie.

Tried to watch (not even play), and security told us to leave.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

This is hilarious. I'm totally willing to basically cuddle next to a guy in order to play Smash while I wait in line.

The purpose of the event was to sway people in some way to experience Smash Bros Wii U and hopefully invest by purchasing the available hardware, did you see some people buying Wii U hardware?

I had a blast too OP. No smash run though, and only one round of the wii u :(. I'll write up impressions and maybe post a video later, since I drove an hour and a half to play this lol.

For those that went to Smash-Fest: You guys get any Spot Passes on your 3DS? I went to the Wii U thing last year and got a ton of Spot Passes making the whole thing worth it to me. Wanna make sure it's the same this year before going (and I know each person's Best Buy is different, just wonderin').
EDIT: Or Street Passes, whatever it's called.

Won all 3 of my matches in the Wii U version today but was absolutely destroyed in the 3DS one but I think that was mainly due to the guy I was playing against's terrible BO. Very intimidating tactic that worked well. Got two smash pins and a couple of other things though so that was rad. Game looks great.

Hey everyone! I got to play the wii u and 3ds version of the game at smash fest.

I spent 1 2-minute match with the wii u version.

and a solid 5 minutes with the 3ds version.

My impressions of the games (cross post from the smash fest thread):

As for my impressions of the games:

The 3ds version surprised me the most. It played so fucking well it was awesome. The little single player stage I played was pretty cool and the lumiose city stage I played at the end was also cool as well. As people have said before it totally felt like city trial from kirby's air ride.

The wii u version of the game was awesome as well, but it didnt surprise me as much. I knew that it was going to be awesome (and it was). However, only playing it for 2 minutes I just couldnt get a feel for it. It looked awesome though and we played the boxing arena stage which I never knew you could go on the platforms to the right and left of the rink and the rafter above the arena. I'm definitely considering buying a wii u for this game.

I played greninja in both the 3ds and wii u version and I didn't like him too much honestly. I liked how fast he was, but he just didnt feel that solid to me (it could just be because of the short time I had with the games).

From a competitive point of view, I feel like this game could have legs. It's definitely a lot faster than brawl (and from what I've played, a lot more fun) although probably not faster than melee. I need more time with the game to really judge this.

Finally it was so weird seeing so many nintendo fans in one place. The demographic in the line was all over the place o_O.

All in all both games look like solid purchases, I just wish I had more time to spend with both of them to make more accurate judgements.

Impressions more of event. Couldn't glean much from two m in though ZSS seems to have a shorter reach on her whip.

The lines were insane at mine in Connecticut. Showed up 45 minutes early, 84th in line. Line behind snaked around building. Line started moving in at four and there was still a wrapped around line in side across game section. Got to play at close to 5:50. No 3DS versions that I saw. One guy playing with me got out and went back into line outside. Still in the plaza, still people lined up outside Best Buy. Madness.

We were allowed to take video and pics at ours...and we didn't get to try smash run, 1v1 on 3ds

Dude was all like blah blah blah pics won't represent the game which is why there are press shots.

Total company line bullshit in terms of not letting us take pics or vids.

About to go to my finacees, but will post detailed impressions when I get over there!!!

Has anyone mentioned that the white ghost thing from Rhythm Heaven is an enemy in Smash Run? Because I am 99% sure I saw it when I played the 3DS demo.

For the people who got hands on at Best Buy, how many people were in line and how long did you have to wait? I swung buy the Best Buy near me and the line was going from the electronic department, down the isle, along the inner wall and out the front of the building. It was starting to rain and I didn't bring my 3DS for the wait, so I didn't get in line. I'll probably drop by in an hour or two and see how it is then.

If you weren't in line an hour ago, you're not playing.

I got the chance to play at Nintendo world new york earlier. Game felt and looked similar to brawl just faster. I played Zero Suit Samus and she is really fun. It was funny to hear people already complaining about samus being too op and how she is getting nerfed from the nintendo rep just because "she won the tournament yesterday". I did have to explain that it was a really dumb excuses especially when it was ran with so many random factors to make those judgments.

Got to play as toon link and link. Thoughts from an extremely casual smash player!

Toon Link - Can confirm toon link's final smash is the same. Also, his down air DOESNT BOUNCE anymore :( Don't know if it's a good change or bad. It seems to NOT STOP until it hits the ground. It'll go right through everyone and move them out of the way. Still spikes him down. His air moves seemed to have more startup lag, too. Also felt like bombs were super slow and short hopping for bombs seemed to not be worth it since landing lag for any jump seemed tremendous (could be same as brawl, but i've only been playing project m recently). Boomerang felt faster maybe? Dont remember arrows. While in the lobby you can try out moves on the sandbag and it shows you how much percent the attacks do, which is neat! His spin attack did 3% per hit, or 2% per hit if it's fully charge (but it lasts longer). That's all i remember from my 2 minutes.

Link - Timing felt off on his air moves, to me. His backflip felt really nice, though. His biggest buff that i could tell is his tether because the range is HUGE so you can fight offtsage without as much risk of death. Hanging that low beneath the stage seemed like a plus, too, if used correctly. You get a HUGE arc from left to bottom, which is a momentum thing seemingly unique to tether characters. Bombs also felt like they came out slower, and short hopping felt useless because of landing lag. Boomerang was WAY faster and stronger. Up smash seemed to have better knockback, too. I whiffed the final smash :/ Didn't get a good hit with ground spin attack but air spin attack seemed to have a stronger last hit, as well. Seemed buffed overall. I liked him.

My main concerns, even as a casual smash (not competitive at all) player is that landing lag felt like it took FOREVER. I almost didn't want to jump because if I landed i'd be stuck in a helpless state. It's definitely 'fast brawl'... which is... better?

OH OH HO: Also, the nintendo rep was asking everyone if they owned a 3ds or if they owned a a wii u and keeping a tally in a notebook. I guess nintendo wants to know if hardcore smash fans already own the system or not to GUESS at how much of a system seller this game could be.

Just got back from Best Buy. Since the line was so huge, they only allowed each group of 4 to play one two minute match, so I didn't get enough play time to get a good feel of the game. Nonetheless, I still had a lot of fun in the one match I had and enjoyed what I played. I wanted to try out both Greninja and Pit, but since I only had one match I settled for Greninja since he's the newcomer I'm most interested in playing. I'll just list a few things that I found interesting about him and other things I noticed from watching and playing.

Greninja

-Side-B does not have a charge animation. The first thing I wanted to try out was how far his Shadow Sneak move traveled and how freely he could move while charging it. However, at first, I thought I was messing up the button presses until I realized that there was no animation. This means that Greninja can move around completely free while charging it up and the other players have no indication that he's charging it. Good for tricking players. It took me until the end of the match to realize this, so I never got to properly test it out. If I’m wrong about this, then please correct me.
-Neutral-B cannot be held after charge like DK's punch or Samus's charge shot, so it forces the player to shoot it after it fully charges. Also, the start-up is a little slow.
-Up-B is similar to Pikachu’s, but slower.
-All of his attacks are really fast and good. They might be weak, but I’m not sure.
-Neutral-Air creates a circle of water around him.
-Up-Air has him kicking his legs upward and spinning in a manner similar to Fox’s Down-Air. Hits enemies in a similar way too.
-Overall, I really enjoyed the character. He felt better suited for one-on-one matches where you can concentrate on mind games and utilizing his fast moves.

General Impressions

-Although I fully plan to buy a Gamecube controller for this game, I had zero issues with the Wii U Pro Controller set-up and I never messed up a button press. Same button layout as Brawl/Melee.
-The game is noticeably faster than Brawl. Leaned more towards Melee in terms of movement speed and falling speed. However, the feel of the character and pulling off moves leans more towards Brawl. I really like the balance and I want to try it out more. Though I wouldn't take my word for it since I didn't have enough time to be sure about the speed.

Random Stuff
-Pikachu’s Down-B goes through platforms. Was it always like this?
-Every character only had three of their palette swaps for the demo so no Dark Pit
-Sonic’s “white” palette swap just looks like the regular Sonic, but covered in white powder. The rest are different shades of blue.
