E3 2014 Super Smash Bros Impressions (Best Buy Smashfest / Invitational)

4 HOURS WAITING, 7 MINUTES OF PLAY.

Impressions:

I played as Fox both times.

3DS: The adventure mode thing was cool. The enemies were surprisingly tough. Navigation in the game world was difficult because, unlike SSE, there was almost no indication of what direction to head in. 3DS controls were responsive, but suffered from the same problems as the bigger machine. See below.

Wii U: Graphics, interface, resolution - all pretty great. A+ presentation.

Played the boxing stage.

In terms of movement speed: the game is faster than brawl. I didn't notice any floatiness. I didn't really have a problem getting up in peoples faces. Direction smashes were responsive and timely.

What I DID have a problem with was the pro controller. Muscle memory + cross-style button layout + shoddy M&M candy higher-than-the-sears-tower face buttons with the surface texture of a wrinkly mole = a bad time. No noticable rumble was hyper disappointing.

As for Fox, it's the same move set from brawl, minus the new standard combo change. It's up to you whether prefer S1 / Melee / Brawl / PM. As huge PM/Melee fan, I didn't really have a problem with it, though nothing stood out + or - because the pro controller was fighting me HARD every time I tried to change my strategy.

His new green alt is WORSE compared to brawl and melee. More light green highlights. Too many. The balance has been disturbed. I don't think his combat boots were red, they were grey or bland green.
B > M > 4. Gross. Shit sucks.

If you plan on going on Saturday, you should:

1) Get there 2 hours early, earlier if you don't care for 3ds smash (our guy was halfway through the line).
3) Bring some entertainment, bring your friends, or make some new ones.
2)Practice with a Pro controller on wii u, or Pro controller/Dualshock3/360 pad if you play on dolphin in the meantime. If you are a GC pad diehard you will fuck up.

Went to the one in Shaumburg and got their right at 4. The line was already going outside the building so me and my group just watched some people play for about an hour and a half. Game looks really solid and fluid from what I saw but I hope when I go on Saturday earlier I can actually play. Also a lot of the shoppers and BB employees seemed really pissed off and annoyed at everyone there and I thought that was pretty funny.

I played Pit as well. His new moveset is fantastic, I love the upperdash arm, and his recovery is SO much better than the old glide. Just a solid straight recovery similar to a Fox upB.

Nice, I used him in Brawl as well and he looks fun in this too. Does he seem stronger?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDsmjbifWUk ooooooooooooooooooh

We were in line for about 4 hours and got to play a single 2 minute match. Very disappointing especially considering everyone up until a few people ahead of us got to play two rounds.

Oh, and I was floored that they had a single demo unit and didn't have the monitor raised, so the entire time in line, you were unable to see the screen. You'd think Best Buy of all places would have a better set up considering they sell the equipment for it. Awful experience. Would not do again.

The game seemed fun for the two minutes of time I had with it.

They literally just repurposed the wii u demo to run smash. Nothing more. Anything else would honestly be expecting too much.

Does ANYONE have the pics of the coins or other swag they gave away?
No one seems to have been taking any pics of that, just being sneaky and getting the set up and screens...which we've already seen a million times during gameplay and stuff. >__>

Waited 2 and a half hours. Didn't get to play. No 3DS version to play, either. Got close to the game before they shut it down for the night.

Fuck that. Ugh.

Went to the Best Buy at Anjou, Montreal for five and a half hours and managed to clock six Wii U matches and three 3DS Smash Run runs (That the crowd was very small compared to what a bunch of ye apparently experienced helped; we only filled a corner of the video game corner). We were explicitly told no photography or recordings, but I can provide some answers and updates to some of georly's questions from my time there:

Character Questions (non-technical)
Final Smash for Mario Same
Wii Fit Trainer's Kirby Hat Kirby turns white with Female Wii Fit Trainer's gray hairdo
Mega Man's Kirby Hat His helmet
Greninja's Kirby Hat A Greninja cap ala Pikachu/Lucario/Charizard Kirby Hats
Villager's Kirby Hat Default Villager's hairdo
All villager variations (all boy versions, all girl versions) Given that there's only four outfits per character in the demo, the Villager's variations there are those shown in the PotD announcing them

Item Questions
Are there any pokeballs in the demo that weren't in Smash Direct/Dojo? Saw Genesect; he jumps around and shoots projectiles horizontally straight forward and the occasional laser beam

General Mechanics
Do alternate costumes, like Male Wii Fit Trainer, also have alternate colors? Yes, Male Wii Fit Trainer has a green costume in the demo

Also, using earphones on the 3DS demo, I can tell that Sonic's side taunt was ruined: The animation's the same, but it's not "You're too slow!" anymore! It's
"Sonic Speed!"

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

(thanks for the update)

Does greninja hat have tongue or no?

Can some one please talk about what is the best way to play on #DS: Circle pad or DPad? This will probably be the deciding factor on whether or not I get a 2 or 3DS.

I got a chance to try Smash Bros. at Best Buy today, and it was pretty great! Standing in line for about three hours got me not one, not two, but THREE matches of Smash 4 - one on the 3DS and two on the Wii U.

Perhaps most interestingly, I can offer what is likely a relatively unique experience. On the 3DS version, it was just me and three CPUs... unless one opted to change that, so I actually did a 1v1 with a CPU for my 3DS time. So that was neat, and I have to say that, as someone who is coming from avidly playing Melee and PM, the game seems to hold up fairly well. Characters didn't seem to live too terribly long - during the 3 minute 1v1 I managed to KO my level 3 opponent three times, and part of that time was actually spent deliberately sandbagging so I could see his Final Smash.

Generally, the game seems to be a marked improvement from Brawl, at least to me. It's still much slower than Melee, but hitstun makes a HUGE difference. The lack of edgehogging sucks, though - one time I actually tried to edgehog someone and got booted right off the ledge, much to my chagrin.

Mega Man, who I played in the 3DS version, is amazing and I love him. He's really easy to pick up and have fun with - which is great, because I was worried he'd be unwieldy. His up- and down- smash are great KO moves.

Villager is actually much more difficult to pick up than I expected. His forward smash, dropping a bowling ball, is difficult to make use of, and his up-smash, the fireworks tube, hits at a weird spot. His down-B is practically impossible to use in a chaotic FFA - I managed to plant a sprout and tried to water it but missed. His forward-B is neat, and goes very far. He can even move it up and down as he goes.

Pikachu, while significantly slower than in Melee, is pretty good. I managed to win my match with him in Sudden Death against a Greninja. His nair is still great, and his F-smash has as much range as ever, and also has a new animation that I can't decide if it looks great or ridiculous.

Costumes - as far as I saw, every character in the demo only had four costumes. Villager's four were the ones we've already seen (two male, two female) and Pikachu's were the same as in Brawl. Mega Man had blue, green-on-white, red-on-white, and brown-on-yellow, all palettes from his games. Rosalina's four palettes were blue, light mint, pink (making her resemble Peach slightly), and I >believe< yellow/gold. Notably, Little Mac's wireframe palette was not choosable.

I watched someone play on the Reset Bomb Forest, which worked very differently to how I expected. After it changes to the forest, the stage does not scroll. Instead, it seems to be fairly destructable - the top-left platform was destroyed in two parts as I watched.

I played on Rainbow Road. I started in a neat little area that had the Shy Guy karts glide from the left to the right, hitting the fighters. I also went to the tunnel area visible in the Direct and a large walkoff on the moon, completely flat but with Shy Guys periodically driving from left to right.

Unfortunately, I can confirm that Toon Link and Link both still have the Triforce Slash as their Final Smash. On another FS note, Giga Mac can be hit and takes damage just like Giga Bowser. He doesn't flinch at all.

Finally, Snivy showed up as a Poke Ball Pokemon. He throws a bunch of Razor Leafs forward.

Can some one please talk about what is the best way to play on #DS: Circle pad or DPad? This will probably be the deciding factor on whether or not I get a 2 or 3DS.
At least in default controls, the dpad on the 3DS is used for taunts. Speaking of which, Mega Man's side-taunt was fun - he does the teleport animation from his trailer, with the blue beam extending all the way to the top of the screen. The other two taunts were just little poses, I believe.

Cross-post for the fans here,

Dumb Suggestion:

Well, if many people were so concerned about lags of aerial and landing then I suggest people to take it to Sakurai and Nintendo on Twitters. Make sure that your voice could be heard.

Don't idle around and complaining on the forums because it wouldn't do anything. Someone who already experienced the game should set up the group and make sure that people would tweet and send emails to Sakurai, Nintendo, and Nintendo of America about your concerns of Aerial Lags/Slow Gravity or Jump mechanism and Landing Lags.

I'm staying out of it because I have no experience with the game and how battle engine work since I learned by playing in the game and doing it with my hands. I'm saying that if people are truly concerned about it then they should do something about it .

Edited: I'm aware of the fact that some of people here are casual. I think it might be better if you emphasized that you are casual player and that you are concerned about those features.

Edited 2: Please bring it to their attention in very kind way. Don't chew them out or being rude. If you are being rude then they will straight out ignoring you.

My video is finally up after two hours, time to post this!

SUPER SMASH BROS IMPRESSIONS:
Today I went to Smash Fest in Cedar Falls, Iowa, which is about an hour and a half from the Quad Cities. My aunt and little brother had nothing better to do, so they tagged along! We got there at about 1:30, where there (appeared to be, at least) nobody in line. We left, got some food and came back at 3:20...

...and holy hell, it filled up! 30th or so inline. Luckily, they started demoing the game early, at about 3:40 or so. Because of the long line and only having one demo, it was hard to see without getting out of line. I was also disappointed to learn that only Wii U pro controllers could be used, and that pre-ordering the game meant you get the gold coin at launch, and not then and there. But that's about where my disappointment ends!

This was my first Nintendo event I've gone to in years, and I was pleasantly surprised by the 3DS Streetpass. It is cool at this sort of thing, and I had more people pass me by than I had ever had before. The people there, while often not the most attractive, were very pleasant. I was able to discuss the news from yesterday with people in line, and heard Megaman come up a lot. People were hyped for him. The Best Buy employees/Nintendo reps were also pleasant enough, and were either filming the event, or allowing someone to film it. I don't think it was them, because the person filming looked more like a fan than a worker. They also had no problem with people filming stuff with their phones. With that, I'll segway this into...

3DS VERSION IMPRESSIONS
....by stating that I didn't really get much 3DS version footage :(. I liked that we got to play the game while waiting in line, and I liked the character and stage selection! But it's hard to get used to in the limited amount of time. I can't really post great impressions, because it's really hard to get used to the controls in only 3 minutes. But it was fun enough, though it will take some getting used to, I'm afraid. I played as Little Mac, and I wasn't really able to pick him up in the short amount of time. His charge meter is on the bottom screen. He's quick, and launches some strong attacks, but really is shitty in the air. I liked that L and R are separated to grab, though I hope I can swap it to my Brawl set up (putting one of the jump buttons as grab). The controls really do take getting used to, I found myself always tapping up to jump. I can't really post impressions on how fast it is, aside from probably slower. Overall, the game looks great, but the controls just took some getting used to. It's worth noting, there's a sandbag lobby before the a match starts on this version.
I'll also note, once they handed you the 3DS, they left it fairly unattended. I've never shoplifted before, but god damn was I tempted to take the cartridge or sd card out. I could've gotten away with it, I think.
Except I have no idea if it was on a cartridge or sd card. I forgot to check lol.

WII U VERSION IMPRESSIONS
I got a video of the match before me, and of my match. Check it out here! I was playing as Mario in the second match. Sorry for the bad camera work during the first match. If it annoys you, the second match starts at 3:40.
I'll start by saying the Wii U pro controller is not easy to pick up for Smash. I found myself pressing the wrong buttons way too often. It just doesn't have that naturalness to it that the Gamecube had. Combine that with only 2 minutes to play, and you find it hard to get a good impression. But I will say that the game is slower than Melee and Project M. It seemed faster than Brawl, and air dodging seemed more similar to that game than Melee. Because of the limited time, you'll see me mostly using Mario's Side Smash, and often underestimating its range. It was really, really odd playing with a Wii U pro controller. Definitely gonna play on a Gamecube controller.
I'll note that the game crashed once before I got up there, and it also seemed glitchy during the slow down once the match ends (how it turns slow mo after time but before the screen transition). I was afraid it would crash every time I saw this happen, though it never did, and in no way affected gameplay. But the game seems largely close to completion, and I'm sure these bugs will all be ironed out.

SWAG AND CLOSING THOUGHTS
It seemed understaffed, and as such, most the employees were tending the line. People were just grabbing what they could from the swag table after their match....myself included, lol. Got a pretty cool coupon too! I was saddened seeing the lack of swag, as I'm sure after I was done, it wasn't long before the rest of that table would be gone. But as Reggie would say, "not my problem."
Here's the swag I got:
9OBXJkC.jpg
Those Kirby erasers :D.
I also don't know a better place to mention this, but someone played a Drake's "Motherfuckas never loved us" on the speakers super loud next to the event, and it got shut off right after it said that line. Found it kind of humorous.
Overall, I had a pretty fun time. I wish other companies would do this, because this has me strongly, strongly considering getting a Wii U later this week. I had a very fun time despite my short time with the game, and I might actually go back Saturday. So expect another update (hopefully with more and better footage from me) if I do!

ADVICE FOR SATURDAY
-Arrive at least 40 minutes early
-Bring your 3DS for street pass fun
-Have a fully charged phone for recording gameplay
-Have fun chatting with people in line
-Use the same character both times if you're picking someone new, that way you adjust to their moves
-Take as much swag as you can, not your problem if they're too stupid to leave it as a free for all.
-Don't pick a walk off stage if you want the game to be at all competitive. You'll die only once the whole match if you do.

I work at an Office Depot which is across the street from Best Buy, and all my co-workers were wondering what was going on with the huge line outside. It felt good saying "It's Smash Bros. dude where have you been?" to each and every one of them.

Good times.

Geoff Keighley pulled off Joe McHale at the VGX levels of not giving a fuck.

Edit: They should of had just Prog, D1, and Scar host as a group, or Eric Petersen (who narrated the Smash Run portion) host.

joel mchale may not have given a fuck, but he was trying to liven vgx up a bit. keighley freaks out when something doesn't stick to a script and he seemed bored as all hell out on stage. how did this guy weasel himself into becoming a video game spokesperson i'll never know. i would have been a lot happier with overexcited, stuttering adam sessler if they had to get anyone.

Was at the Denver event, and it was quite fun. Didn't happen often, but the crowd just lost it when Mega Man used his final smash.

The announcers could have been better, but they were clearly thrilled to be there and fed off the audience, and that made up for it. Keighly didn't seem to want to be there.

Went at 4, left at 7 and there was about 200 people ahead of me. Fuck my Sawgrass best buy, they had a guy walk through the line and offer you first in line if you signed up for a Best Buy Credit Card so he kept pulling people from the back and skipping us. Worst part is he had 3DS and never let anybody play it.

Anybody else deal with this shit?

You get it for pre-ordering and picking up the game

It is a pre-order bonus.

Oh, I was just wondering because of Anth0ny's post in the other Smash Bros thread:

And so, the excruciating wait began. 90 minutes of Pushmo, street passing and reflecting on E3 news began.
A Nintendo rep began handing out sign up sheets for the game, and these papers, as they would send us Canadians the special Smash Bros. coin in the mail since they didn't ship in time:

img_30401q0fu7.jpg

Were they mistaken in how the coin giveaway worked?

So the gold super smash bros coin was unavailable at the event?

Also, if someone wasn't able to go on Wednesday, are they eligible to get a gold coin Saturday?

What the people told us was that demand seemed so high Nintendo changed it from the first 70 people at the event to a preorder today and you auto get the coin as a preorder bonus when you pick it up.

Here are my thoughts on the characters that I've played at Smash Fest:

-Mega Man feels rock-solid. His Super Arm grab ability works surprisingly well, and I was able to get a couple of kills after chucking my opponent straight up into the air. He has a wide range of abilities, which will make him to be a force to be reckon with, especially with in the right hands. While his Final Smash doesn't have any killing power, it does do a large chunk of damage, especially when you get multiple opponents in the Black Hole Bomb. The only bummer is that he doesn't seem to have any powerful finishers, but I need to toy around with him some more.

-Bowser feels the best of both worlds: A fighter who is fast & packs a mighty punch. I still need to figure out what kind of game plan he has, but all in due time. Like others have already mentioned, Bowser is VASTLY improved over his Melee & Brawl counterparts.

-The Villager is.... Weird. Most of his abilities & moves are unconventional, and it was hard to figure out a good set-up.

Yeah he is really awesome and he feels great to play. You feel really powerful.

I'll probably play this casually with friends once my semester starts again, but I can't see myself enjoying it as much as Project M or Melee. I've just put too much time into those two games learning how to correctly do the advanced mechanics and having my playing become better because of it. I like that sense of reward that I get from actually learning the mechanics of a fighting game. I really hate that they removed them years ago, and I still hate it.

I've lost the thread I got this footage from, but it was by a gaffer, so shoutouts whoever you are

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVtELGjR84

Megaman landed his final smash 5 seconds before the timer, the laser hit but the victims didn't get KO'd before time ran out.
That happened to me at E3 yesterday too. Luckily I win a T-shirt in the next match. Mega man is great and tons of fun to play as. Sonic also felt a lot better than in Brawl with much better knock back on his moves. The villager was just weird and awkward though I don't doubt he'll have his supporters. I really want to figure him out. His side smash is dropping a bowling ball, but it has almost no range, making it really hard to land. His down B is in three stages. You have to plant a sapling, then press down B again to water it so it turns into a tree, THEN you have to stand on the opposite side of the tree when your opponent is near it to chop it down on them. I never pulled it off, but hopefully it's a one hit KO ire close to it. Otherwise, it doesn't feel worth the trouble.

What the people told us was that demand seemed so high Nintendo changed it from the first 70 people at the event to a preorder today and you auto get the coin as a preorder bonus when you pick it up.

What I want to know is if you can now preorder from *ANY* best buy or if it has to be one of the event ones. I preordered from them just in case, but they're literally an hour+ drive and i'm not sure if it's worth it. I have a best buy 5 minutes from where I live and i'd much rather go there.

Really could have repurposed one more demo unit at least.

Best buy stores only have... 1... Wii U demo unit. It's not like they can make the PS4 demo unit work w/ smash :p

That said, it would have been nice for the nintendo reps to bring in 1-2 Wii Us and hook them up to exsisting best buy tv's, but that may have just been logistically impossible. Probably against some regulation "can't use sony branded tv's" or something, but then you don't know which TVs best buy has on display, etc. Every best buy is set up differently, so the simplest solution for nintendo is just to use the hardware that THEY ALREADY OWN and repurpose them for the smash invitational.

good to know, sigh. Well, i MAY make a trip.

Yeah. I realized for something called "Smash-fest," you'd think they had one more kiosk for the demo. I'm gonna give it a shot tomorrow; maybe show up an hour before the store opens to find out how the line up will start.

I'll be at the Mira Mesa [CA] Best Buy wearing a Kirby shirt if anyone from here is going.

Last thing, if this hadn't been asked yet. Does Mega Man make any sounds (Like Game & Watch), or does he stay silent?

I'm probably gonna go to this today, its a 40 minute drive and I thought about it, yeah, I'm going to waste this gas money.

EDIT: Or not, not willing to wait in line for more than 30 minutes to play this.
