Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Is there some sort of option for seeing people while you roam, or while you're at the tower? My game feels so empty compared to when I was watching streamers play.

Downloaded by my internet is crapping the bed the last 2 hours and I cant get past the character maker before my internet dies again.

Stupid timely internet outages!

Am I the only one who feels like this is a Halo RPG, but better? I would like different types of enemies, but I'm also not that far in. It's good, but something feels like I've played this game before twice.

Does anyone feel like that they've played this before twice, in another life? Anyone? No? Nope? :(
I'll get it, just don't know if it will be for console. (yet) :)

I can say this.. I already like it more than Halo.

Kind of. It feels more like a Halo MMO to me so far. I'm level 6 and currently activating all those side missions. I'm glad it feels pretty good solo. I'm not a huge co-op player BUT I do love the wave emote. It feels so natural to just wave when you bump into another player, and then go on your separate ways.

It took about a round of competitive multiplayer before I started to get the hang of it. My first round I was next to last on my team. The second round I ended up leading the team and it felt great. There's certainly a bigger reliance on the radar than I'm used to for other titles.

Also, scored my first triple kill in MP: http://www.twitch.tv/digitalzips/c/4451689

This sums it up for me too. Pretty bland so far.

Alright so these are my first impressions.

First off, game looks pretty. Gorgeous art style and soaking with atmosphere, love it. However, at times it can feel rather bland, though that might be due to how much we've seen this demo specifically. Design of enemies, characters and just the world really complements the feel that this isn't just Halo, instead it is Bungie's own world. Great job there.

And that is where my enjoyment for this game stops. Everything else is just...not good. The AI is atrocious and stupid, they will literally stand in one position and shoot without really using cover or doing anything flanky. I had a whole bunch of hive just stand there waiting for me to throw my grenade thing and it felt really stupid to watch. I feel like more movement from them and more varying tactics would really help spice it up, but that might be limited with the controller input and reaction.

The audio is great, but dear god what is wrong with Peter. Usually I love his voice but he sounds so dull and bored, it really detracts from the game's atmosphere. Speaking of atmosphere, the game can sometimes feel really empty, which is not a bad thing but I feel like it forces you to mount up for travelling or else enjoy boring walks along empty corridors.

The layout of the map is pretty dull, a lot of places you just can't go to and some will just inexplicably kill you because you decided to explore. Other places have nothing when you do explore, so it feels useless to go walk off the beaten path. Games like WildStar and Guild Wars 2 did this so well in that moving away from the traditional dirt road gave you great benefits, so its annoying to not see this in Destiny.

Warlock. Holy crap it is bad. You start off with an SMG, Assault Rifle and a Shotgun, all of which you'll end up just using the SMG or assault rifle because they have the longer range and better burst. My "abilities" are very limited, and you can only have them assigned as supers which is super boring. I felt like it was pointless having classes because there is no real class structure, everyone just uses guns. The Warlock super is fun, but takes forever to charge up and you can get swamped so hard that it becomes pointless.

UI is alright, albeit clunky. I don't particularly like controllers and so I'd hope to see keyboard/mouse supported as that would ellevate a lot of my problems with the UI and game interaction being clunky.

Of course these are all my opinions however this hasn't really helped push me to buying it, and honestly it just feels like a mediocre Borderlands but without the fun and some Halo themes thrown in. The big problem I have is that while this is alpha and things can change, nothing as drastic as what I pointed out could possibly change in the three months to launch. The game feels like it could be fun for a bit, but I am definitely not getting that vibe of "yeah, I could easily spend hours playing and enjoying this."

Tell me your secrets. Tried stopping it and restarting and I made it worse. Now the update file is taking 40 minutes.

I would have downloaded this via remote PS4 or whatever, but couldn't for the life of me figure out how to do it with my phone. Redeemed the code through the desktop site but didn't see that option.

on the app, you go into store, press the little person with check mark on it. That slides out a menu with redeem code. Redeem the code. Then go back into the store, press the person with the check mark again to open the menu. Select Download list. The alpha should be the first thing on the list select download.

It's much more difficult than it should be... but it is doable...

I'm getting use to the controls. I'm manually moving myself like I'm in Halo. I want to stick everything with a plasma grenade. That's not a bad thing. These
wizards
are sweet. I just don't like being on a trail with lights guiding me everywhere. I hope there's some feedback e-mail coming soon. I'd like to comment on some of the quest. One thing I'll hate to see this game do is have 1 elite in every quest and 1 boss. I hope missions are random and change very often. This beginning stuff feels tacked on like borderlands. Halo did one thing right and I think that was progression. Each time you progressed you felt like you were moving to a new area with all sorts of stuff to explore, but I'm still playing.
I'm currently fighting a wizard.

I get that Bungie feel though, which is so great. Thanks Bungie!! Wherever you are.

If you tack on mob after mob you reach a point of insanity for the player IMO.

Remote Play impressions, please.

Played a good hour or so on Remote Play. Works great already. I wasn't expecting them to have already optimized the controls considering its an alpha but its totally set up. Tap right side of the screen for Melee and left side for grenade, both left and right for super. Middle of screen serves as touchpad and brings up your Peter Dinklage robot. Press down on D-pad for sprint. I usually hate all things touch screen control but this actually works quite well since its the whole right or left side, you can just treat it like a button. I never saw another player during my time using remote play though so it might be single player only on remote play for now. Not 100% on that.

Kept going south and found a bunch of mobs with question marks over their heads and proceeded to die instantly. :)

Did they say "Huh? What was that noise?"

Yeah, those guys are bastards.

Wish I knew this a few hours ago, thanks a ton though.

First impressions after two hours and mainly exploring:

The game is beautifully done with different environments that drip with atmosphere. Bungie's sci-fi art style really shines

Great gunplay, feels so natural. Floaty jet pack jump is a little weird and takes getting used to

I also really like how narrative seems to unfold. It's so natural and fits within the context of the universe. I have a feeling by the time we hit release, the lore of Destiny will become a major selling point.

Hope to play with some people too off of Gaf, been riding solo for the most part! How can I join the DestinyGaf group?

someone want to play with me? i feel like i shouldn't play this alone. i have no playstation friends so if anyone wants to add me: johnsavage214

I'm pleasantly surprised by it, all the footage I've seen of it has looked so incredibly dull but having now played it I get the impression it's just one of those games which is going to be difficult to show off how enjoyable it can be for the player just by watching videos/streams. Personally there's no way I'd want to watch people play this game, i'd be bored to tears and yet I'm having plenty of fun playing it.

does Strike work like raiding where you go in with a set team, kill adds, then fight multiple bosses for loot? I'm going to assume there are multiple tiers of loot with different drop rates.

I put in a request to join destiny gaf clan. My alpha name is H0LL0W GUARDIAN. I'm assuming the destiny clan leader is in this thread?

Quick tip for you guys. Uncommon (green) gear and higher can be leveled up and have abilities that can be unlocked (sights for guns, faster reload on gloves, for example). Inspect your gear and you can see what its abilities are.

There are at least two "bosses" in the strike but only one, Sepiks Prime, gives you any sort of loot. Cause he's the main baddie bad guy.

Downloading now. At the speed doesn't look like I'm going to be able to play tonight.
Guess I'm waking up early to play before work.

Movement definitely feels like Halo. The multiplayer is just not fun. The campaign is alright but I'm sure it will be better with friends.
