The controls feel amazing. Seriously. It just feels right

ADS isn't much of a problem for me, but I'd like to see better accuracy when firing from the hip. That would slightly speed up gunplay

The enemy AI is also surprisingly smart! I've been flanked multiple times and it felt pretty great to see them dash behind cover.

I haven't ventured into VS Multiplayer but I'm definitely looking forward to it. This game has a lot of organic moments that make everything feel so epic.

With some slight tweaking here and there, this game could be really special. I'm looking forward to the Beta and full game. let's goooooo!

Really? It wasn't that hard for us to get to the end (at least I think the
big ass walker is the last thing you gotta kill
) We almost had the fucker, but then we died and I had to leave. I'm sure we would've won after the second try.

Almost there, but that's not quite the end.

You got in. You just didn't get the email. I got an email yesterday and my code didn't work. Woke up this morning to a message from Playstation welcoming me to the alpha. Open message. Press X. Took me directly to the redeem code portion of the store and the code from the email was already populated. Redeemed the code and it took about 30 minutes to DL.

Had to leave for work but really excited to try out remote play. I read that the game is already optimized and you don't have to use the back panel. It's all front touch instead.

Sorry, that's not my experience - which is that the back panel just hasn't been included yet, meaning no access to a host of buttons. I guess it's yet to come.

I just logged back in and the same bug(?) seems to be occurring that I had yesterday where there are no other players viable in the tower.

Man. The players met thing on PS4 isn't working. I met some pretty chill duders during my session that I wanted to add as friends.

Bungie please take notice of this.

This isn't trivial. Give the skilled players the option to fire accurately from the hip and maintain there mobility! Keep things moving and fast (i.e. Halo at its best).

ADS is for long range or for less skilled players willing to sacrifice mobility for easier aim!!!

I played it for a few hours last night and enjoyed it. I'm not a Halo fan and was afraid the controls and guns would be similar but they were not. My wife made a good point after an hour or so though. "This looks/plays like every other game you play" I stopped, looked at the game, and had to agree with her. :)

I may get flamed for this, but I hope the strike difficulties get toned down a bit it terms of how much damage enemies can take. There should of course be challenge, but if they aren't accessible, people aren't going to play them and then I don't think that bodes well for longevity. The group I was in, we could barely dent trash mobs.
The Devil Stander and Purple Ball fights in the strike were such miserable, tedious experiences, I find it baffling that Bungie dudes are bragging about their raids taking 4-16+ hours to beat. Who could possibly want to do that?
Hopefully the beta will feature some mobile bosses, because these guys were about as fun as shooting nerf guns at a wall. Even recycling Halo 2 bosses would be an improvement over these, which is a really scary thought.

For me as long as the PVP is 60FPS I can forgive the main game being 30ish. It would be fantastic though. I don't think it's too much to ask really that a next gen game run at 60.

Oh, the PVP is 60fps? That's neat, I had not tried that yet.

If it's locked 30fps I will be fine with that. For some reason came across my old Marathon 1 manual.. it had a little promo booklet for Bungie games (Minotaur, Pathways, ..) So nostalgic! Such a long time ago now.

I played this for about an hour and a half and honestly got bored of running around the same map visiting the same few locations for missions and encountering the same enemies in the exact same location..just levelled up (why? Why level up the enemies too? It's unfun to spend the same amount of time as before on an enemy even after you've levelled up to be more powerful)

Please tell me the final game won't be this, it's like a poor version of borderlands with sandbox but not open world gameplay. And honestly quite generic.

"Generic" from the makers of Halo?! Why I never heard such nonsense!

I was really hoping they were straying away from Halo. I'm going to put more time into this weekend but first impressions are just sort of blah. If I did keep my pre-order, I'd stay away from PvP but I'm thinking the campaign might not satisfy based on their previous games.

eneded up playing till 3am UK time - I'm no2wpaying for this at work today... However it was not a mistake to stay up playing.. Absolutely LOVE THIS

I'm sure I read it will be in the final build. Think it'll much easier to accomplish given the small map sizes.

I'd be pretty mad if they couldn't do it TBH.

Love the atmosphere of this game. Sat and played it last night longer than I had planned to. Looks fantastic considering it's an alpha.

Did I read correctly that it's possible to explore the area they demo'd at E3 last year? Where you can walk into that giant 'wall'?

For me, the biggest obstacle to getting into MMOs has always been that from an outsider's POV the genre always seemed to have (and i could be wrong) but it SEEMED to have medicore gameplay/mechanics. Destiny seems like it will be a first-person MMO with gameplay/mechanics that approximate or rival the best the genre has to offer, and I think that is worth mentioning.

My thoughts exactly. Well said.

haha so bad. Hive = flood i guess. pretty uninspired if you ask me.

Very uninspired, as soon as the little bot was hacking the door and mentioned that "whoever sealed made sure no one to get in... or out", I instantly had flashbacks to the Flood reveal in Halo CE. Then the creepy biohazard interior just confirmed my fears.

Yup.

There is actually one of the random missions that has you kill a mob in that chamber.

I am hoping when you team up with friends, they make it easier to locate them just like in Border Lands. Put a marker above their head, and an arrow on the screen when they are out of your sights. Its very annoying to find your team members if you stop for a moment to look at your set up, or change something.

Warlock jump doesn't feel nearly as fun as the other 2.

Yeah, I totally agree here.

I found out how good the Titan's "soaring" jump can be - in PVP, if somebody is in a vehicle or turret, you can fly above them and super charge down. It's effective in PVP but in PVE it didn't seem like it was doing anything at all.

As for the Hunter double jump - it seems very mobile and makes escaping pretty easy.

And as for the Warlock, supposedly later the "hover" will change into a "blink teleport" so I'm wondering if that'll be good.

I'll reserve judgement until I've had a chance to play, but after watching a good few hours of streams, it's clear that this game has Activision pushing the CoD influence into it. I hope that isn't the case, but it sure looked like it from the gameplay.

Cross post from BritGAF

Had a good time on Destiny last night. In a way it raised more questions than answers in regards to how certain things work. What's more important though is just how the moment to moment game feels, and I like it quite a lot. Gunplay feels quite good, as does moving around the world, which feels fairly open. The visuals aren't mind blowing but I like the aesthetic and it's sufficiently different in look and feel to other shooters.

I went for the Titan class and Exo race and made a mean looking robot. For me it sort of feels like a missed opportunity not giving Humans, Awoken and Exos unique characteristics like the racial bonuses in Elder Scrolls games. It wouldn't need to be constrictive, just a few passive buffs in certain areas. Without any of that it seems like a purely cosmetic choice, which is odd considering you can only see players with their helmets off in the Tower. I doubt your chosen race will affect side quests or anything like that either.

There are mechanics in the game that I didn't know about before playing and couldn't find a lot of information on in game. There are these called engrams which are a kind of loot that needs to be decoded before you can see what it is and equip it. Decoding it of course costs money. It seems like you're more likely to find high quality stuff in an engram than at a vendor; I decoded one and got a chunky belt fed machinegun as a heavy weapon (I don't think vendors sell those.) Heavy weapons are obviously more potent than your primary but it's rare you'll find ammuntion for them so (as I suppose is intended) you'll want to cling onto that heavy ammo until you need it against a tougher enemy or boss.

Another mechanic I'm still not 100% on is Crucible Marks (there's a second one too, I forget the name). They seem to act like a sub currency you need to get higher quality kit. Along side that I think there's some kind of reputation score you can gain which again allows you to get better equipment. I'm still none the wiser about the factions, which have interested me from the start. I found NPCs representing all of them in the Tower, and they all sell exclusive stuff but there seems to be no other interaction with them; it doesn't seem like you can go up to a guy from New Monarchy or Seven Seraphs and ask for a quest.

Most of the time I spent outside of the Tower was just exploring. There are beacons dotted around the map that offer you small quests like go to this place, hack that, kill this many enemies, collect x amount of y from z enemies etc. These seem like mini quests which will refresh often but have no impact outside of doing them and getting a reward, so you'll always have something to do. I performed a number of these and they give you a suitable amount of purpose in your exploration; I might have missed a chunk of the map if a quest hadn't taken me there.

Overall I'm enjoying myself and, while I always suspected I'd get Destiny, now I know I want the full thing. Before my interest had been fluctuating as I was at turns intriqued by the promise and frustrated by the vagueness of the information surrounding it. My lasting memories of my first session were three things; being pleasantly reminded of S.T.A.L.K.E.R in some of the dark sub-terranean sections, dancing with 10 other players in the Tower: you can use buttons on the D-Pad for gestures, so you can wave, sit down and yes, dance. Lastly, I had en enormous amount of fun instantly killing low level aliens by punching them hard in the face (which is how the Titan class seems to melee.)

Will be on again tonight but only for so long before I go out to watch Spain vs Holland.

Yep, they were bad. Add to the fact that dying resets all their health, and you have me never wanting to play it again.

Got a few hours in last night. Just explore and the strike. It's quite fun but it does feel a bit like it doesn't know what it wants to be.

Explore:
It was really fun until you start to realize it follows typical MMO design in that the same enemies spawn in the same spot over and over and waaay to fast at that. The world felt really dead. No npc encounters, nothing really random, except of course the events but I got the same one twice in the same area so I'm not sure how random they really are. Also, I literally ran into only one other player while exploring.

The side missions were also all fairly repetitive but this is an early, low level area it seems, so I'll reserve judgement till when we can play other areas. My other gripe is there's not enough incentive to explore. I found no cool loot, materials (other than lots of spinmetal) or unique encounters. It's not quite the living, breathing world that it was billed to be. At least not at this point.

Strike:
Holy fucking shit did that spider tank take forever to take down. Of course nobody on my team knew what we were doing at first but even still each leg takes an ungodly amount of damage and the core doesn't stay vulnerable long. It was less tactical than it was a bit of a chore. Mainly due to the bullet sponge shielded guys who keep respawning, making it very hard to unload a super or heavy weapon from the right angle at the right time. I'm going to try it again tonight with some friends on VC and see if we can work better as a team. For a random grouping it was pretty brutal though. The last boss went down much quicker.

Mechanics:
Only one complaint: we have all these abilities to move quickly, jump, etc. but the accuracy penalty is massive. For the amount of quick movement I'd like to see that dialed back a bit. I'm thinking Bungie is trying to make it so lone wolfing is less viable.

I'm going to get into the crucible tonight and see how that goes. Despite what sounds like a lot of negativity above I am enjoying the game quite a bit so far.

Picked up a PS4 to play the Destiny alpha and I'm glad I did. Destiny looks and feels like a Bungie game. The alpha is quite polished in my opinion (compared to a few betas I've played in the last year, BF4 comes to mind) and makes me very optimistic for the release. The open world, missions, and PvP are all excellent. I'm cautiously optimistic, but thus far the itemization seems great. Part of me wonders if the game would have further benefited from being PS4 exclusive, or even current gen exclusive, but that remains to be seen. Overall, well done Bungie.

My thoughts after playing it:

The good

Played like Halo: Take the look (art style and graphics) of Halo, add Borderlands two environments to it, mix them together, and Destiny is what you get.
Felt like Halo: movement, weapons, gunfire, etc.
Sounds like Halo: The music and weapons seem to use modified sound-files that come directly from Halo.
Graphics look like Halo: Graphics reminded me of the Halo Universe mixed in with some of the menus from Mass Effect. The game engine just looks like a modified engine (similar to what Naughty Dog is doing with Uncharted 4) of a Halo game.
Weapons: Guns seemed to look identical to ones from the Halo Universe. One of the enemies had a Needler from Halo, had the same bullets shoot out of it and used the same sfx's.
AI: Brilliant. Enemies behave just like the enemies do in any of the Halo games.

The Bad

Acting: Some of the worst acting I have ever heard in any video-game. The actor for the character I played seemed to be reading his lines with no emotion or connection to the character. He sounded lifeless.
Loading: It took way to long to load from the spaceship floating above the planet to get back into a mission (once load mission was clicked).
Graphics: I know its Alpha, so I am willing to accept that this grievance will probably be fixed upon release of the game. However, this game, in its current state, looks nothing like the reveal trailer from last year. If this doesn't change for the release of the game, I think this would be the equivalent to another Watch Dog's situation.
Options: How can there be no sound options in this day and age?

Overall

I will buy this game. Destiny is Halo+Borderlands. This is a great thing to me and will give me many hours of enjoyment. ^_^

Most of Russia in the Alpha takes place inside that wall. But you can get out where the rusted cars are (the beginning OG the reveal vid) and it's epic!

Really enjoyed exploring, the enemy 'respawns' being hidden behind troop transports jumping in and dropping them off was perfect.

I wandered down into some dark area and found ??? level Hive. I tried for a few seconds but seeing your gun do 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 damage isn't a confidence boost. Legged it, heard them growling as if they were next to me for the rest of my stay in the area so it might be an audio bug. Creepy as hell though.

Did some Crucible, I fell right back into the Halo swing of things. It's not...THERE yet, but it was still fun and snappy.

I'm torn on ADS, I know who it's there for and I can safely play without it in any capacity aside from long range. My worry is like the rest of you, that from-the-hip isn't as accurate. I wonder if it's just the low level weapons we have, perhaps accuracy is a hidden stat on them, or Stability affects them more than we realize. I haven't tested it enough to tell, really.

All told, I love what I'm seeing. I love my Exo that looks like a VF-1J from Robotech. I love Falcon Punching Dregs in the face and being SCARED of a dude with a shield again. I really really missed Bungie.

Edit: Dinklage sounds bored as hell. It's super distracting. The haughty British stuff in the Tower is fine, but Dinklage is not selling it at all.

The complaints against this game are astounding.

The amount of polish and depth in graphics, gameplay and overall packaging live up to Bungie's lofty reputation.

The Borderlands comparison is tired and frankly, a bit ridiculous. The gunplay is more weighty and meaningful in Destiny, as well as the loot game being much more streamlined. I feel like I'm playing a shooter with the amount of "oomph" as Halo, while having a more open structure as Borderlands.

The music, sound and general audio design compliments the slick UI and pristine presentation fed throughout every menu in the game.

I don't know what Borderlands others were playing, but this is a game in a league of it's own. I'm glad someone learned to balance the RPG elements of loot games with hefty shooter gameplay.

This is my first post on NeoGAF, so take it easy on me.

I got into the alpha last night, and played for about 90 minutes, and really enjoyed what I got to see. The only thing I ran into that was annoying was one of the missions in Explore mode.

I was level 4-5 and had a mission to find some computer equipment to scan. The item was quite some distance away which wasn't a big deal. The problem for me was that there was a yellow level 9 Hive Vandal with a few other regular level 9s around the item. Being the stubborn person that I am, I did clear them all out and finished the mission. It took some time though.

Now maybe I missed something that would have indicated that it was a higher level mission. I just don't remember seeing anything.

Outside of that, everything ran smoothly.

I'm pretty sure all the speech comes from your little drone buddy. It would explain the lifeless like voice over.
