Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Man, I suck at getting primary weapons. I got my first uncommon, and it was a hand cannon and let me just say, not a fan. I generally prefer something with medium range for my primary - and while the weapon is green, my white scout rifle gets me much more kills per minute. Makes me sad.

Also, the decrypter or whatever is mean, and had a rare primary gun available for purchase, but needed level 2! Fuck you decrypter!

Yes.

I'd have to agree with the 1920x1080 call, aliases appear to stairstep in clear single pixels. The blurriness is probably a combination of the core imagery and some post-process AA, the whole thing has a fuzzy "look" to it that reminds me of aggressive FXAA, right down to the weirdly-rounded stairstep edges.

Thanks. Makes sense. I feel like they're losing IQ with whatever they're doing now. All that said, it looks great for being "Alpha" but I hope they can improve on it, come launch.

No. I was just in a game when I encountered a random while trying to download some data. We paired up and started exploring the room, when we ran into some creatures that looked like thicker fallen. I didn't see their level, because I started off with the 75 attack rifle I had. That did literally no damage. I switched to the heavy machine gun and I saw a bunch of 1's bouncing off while their meters didn't budge a hair. I laughed and ran. The random I was with got the idea before me, and the two of us booked it out of there quick. LOL. This game, man.... I'm still just exploring the cosmodrome too.

I'm telling all my friends to buy this so we can have some crazy hunts. Mad respect knuckles for Bungie. PEACE.

These guys lol

Well this game sure is addictive.

Played it for nearly 4 hours yesterday till I needed to go to bed and I must have put in another 8+ hours today.
Got both the hunter and the warlock till the levelcap and when my buddy was able to give the game a go, I started a new character again as a titan which I got up to level 6 so far.

Have to say, I'm not really feeling the Titan right now.
In the finished game I'll certainly be picking one of the other 2 classes which I both enjoyed a lot more.

Best part of the evening was when we had to stop since he has to get up early and he said that he was certainly gonna get the game now.
Especially since he's not into sic-fi settings at all when it comes to shooters, so this comes as a big surprise for me.
I actually signed him up for the alpha as I didn't know if he even wanted to try the game.
Guess we will finally no longer have to play any shitty battlefield games starting september due to lack of other options. ;D

Oh and I finally went and saw the abandoned freeway with all the rusted out cars, but also made it to some kind of shipyard on the complete opposite side of the map.
It sure is huge. Too bad the alpha wasn't designed to use these parts in any meaningful way. Then again, it only makes me long even more for the completed product.

Having fun so far, but I still suck at FPSes, haha.

How much more fun is it to play with friends? I don't have any that are in the alpha.

Watched some people play it on twitch. Reminded me of borderlands. Anything special about this game?
Sci-fi-ish world. Nicely rendered environments. Combat feels more like Halo Reach Firefight, you have jack shit for defensive options (at least in this Alpha), treasure chests are more like Tomb Raider 2013 than Borderlands, but the multiplayer (co-op and competitive) is integrated across everything.

And people run around the social hub dancing and pointing and waving at each other like an MMO/Playstation Home.

Hold it so the tip of your thumb is right over the analog stick.

I was one of those people who that the DS3 controller absolutely sucked for shooters. DS4 is pretty good for them.

Dax01, can I ask you how you feel about the game after having played it for longer than most of us?

VisceralBowl is already tired of it. I understand that it is a small fraction of the game, but even so, I'm still really enjoying it after 10 or so hours! I think I've just about explored everything... But I can't be sure.

On another note, do you think they will add an in game map at a later date, to keep track of where you are? I feel like it would be useful, but then again, I like exploring without it, and getting my bearing by landmarks and shape. Its a refreshing change.

There was a noticeable jump from pre-alpha to this. I expect the usual polish bump for final.

Remember, this build is probably what, a month or more old? They had to branch it off at some point to get it through cert.

The game itself is a lot of fun, but I agree with a lot of others that the first Strike is really just a pain. Enemies hit too hard and have too much health (the bosses, at least). Once my pug figured out that you can shoot the legs on the spider boss to expose its weak points things went more quickly, but it still took forever. Same with the orb at the end: It was a good deal easier, but took forever to kill due to its ridiculous amount of health.

I can see that sort of thing working in raids (with more mechanics at play, at least), but for three man 'dungeons' it is just really tedious: especially at level six. Hopefully they tune it back a bit to make things more interesting.

Also, the exploration missions are really dull. I'll chalk that up to this being an alpha, though.

PvP can be quite fun, although I've yet to win a match. The inclusion of vehicles is great and the maps (I've only played on the moon so far) seem interesting thus far. I'm not a fan of how quickly people die: I kind of expected something more along the lines of Halo health-wise. Still fun though, and makes you think about whether or not you want to enter an encounter with someone or not before you run in guns-a-blazin'. Does anyone know if there are PvP rewards before level 20, or if those are the only ones available? They're pretty ridiculously expensive so I wouldn't be surprised if they want you to start saving up for them early.

I still plan to pick the game up at launch in the white ps4 bundle, if for nothing else than for the PvP. Hopefully they'll look at tuning the encounters a bit before release.

I think that players should have a bit more health/survivability in the crucible. It seems to turn into a kind of who sees who first wins kind of situation. A more cat and mouse style play is something I think would be a lot more fun.
You know, like halo.

Is there something you need to do to unlock the strike mission? I'm lvl 8 but it's still greyed out. I'm also a PS+ member if that matters.

Another thing. The full game needs to allow me to have 6 people (or even 4) in cooperative free roam. The game supports up to 12 according to the roster, just not in my party at the same time. The only two things I can play with 4+ people is the Crucible and The Tower.

Somebody actually wasted their time to count thousands of little tiny squares?
PIXELS ARE NOT SQUARES :/

No, just a few "little tiny squares." Using different sampling densities in different areas of the buffer is uncommon in practice, so you only have to find the ratio of spatial samples to output pixels in a small area of the image (usually a couple of sections of a few stairstepping edges; for geometric sampling, you tend to try to find horizontal res along near-vertical edges, and vertical res along near-horizontal edges).

In Destiny's case, we're talking maybe a couple minutes of work on those sample images to be reasonably sure.

This echoes my sentiments quite a bit. I only really play BF4 (with 2 others). Neither of them are in the alpha, but it is refreshing playing a game that is such fun and varied. Basically something that isn't BF. I also love that the finished, patched BF4 feels as though it is tonnes buggier than Destiny in alpha.

I have been addicted to this game but haven't played coop properly yet. I will do when I tey the strike mission though. Feel it will be better than a PuG.

I feel like yet again, being forced to support last gen is biting the gameplay in the butt. Like Borderlands, they're restricted from throwing over a certain number of enemies at you at once because of last gen hardware restrictions, so instead they throw a smaller number of bullet sponges at you in order to increase the difficulty.

I can't wait for some of these games to finally break free from the constraints of last gen.

I appreciate being able to see my legs and feet.

Can I ask why?

I rarely find myself looking down in FPS games. When I am, it is during downtime, when I am messing around. When I see if I splash through the water, or leave footprints in the snow.

Otherwise, I don't think i would be too bothered.

I like to see that I'm not floating. It's just little details that I like.

Haha, that certainly is true about BF.
Even though everything is supposed to be fixed nowadays, it still doesn't feel anywhere near as polished as this alpha code.
That certainly says something about EA/DICE. Then again, it also says a ton about Bungie, which for it's fans, shouldn't come as a surprise. ;)

I'm not sure if you have played the parts that I have played. Because I sure as hell am not asking for them to throw even more enemies at me at once in certain scenarios. lol
It gets bloody damn hard when you're being overwhelmed by certain enemy waves.
If the enemy count is restricted in certain parts, I doubt it has anything to do with last gen holding the designers back.
Feels more like design decision than anything really.

Did anyone else go to the underground subway (Near the spawn point in Old Russia) and find the enemies with: ?? for their level?

XD They one hit me at level 6 and I did 1 damage to it.

Anyway here's some screenies! Not too exciting, just fooling around in the Tower.

I really like my final screenshot. :D

Ugh. I need to stop playing this soon. Maxed out my second toon. Now I'm just roaming and level grinding my weapons.

Once I get my beta key I'll be switching my pre order to digital. This game feels like it needs to be able to launch at any time for me.

How are warlocks? It's the only class I haven't tried.

Watched some people play it on twitch. Reminded me of borderlands. Anything special about this game?

It is similar. It has special moves and lots of guns. So far I'm finding that Borderlands is better in every regard except the ability to group with other people quickly. I'm reluctant to judge it too harshly simply because it's an alpha.

I'm absolutely loving the game so far. The scale of the game I'd amazing and I found one place that still wasn't textured and had an unreachable chest. Only problem I've had is I don't see anyone else on the field. When I joined a buddy's fireteam yesterday I saw a ton of people playing at the same time.

Is there a way to go to Orbit from, for example, the Tower while in a Fireteam without leaving the fire team? Was just playing with my friend, went to Orbit, and then we were kicked out of our fire team.

Haha, yep! I was cautious and didn't run straight for the loot chest in front of me. Saw the ?? and instantly knew it meant they were at least 5 levels above me. Gave them a wide berth and legged it.

I assume they must be far beyond our level, cause I was level 4 when I came across level 9 enemies and they didn't appear as: ??.

Must be like... Max level, what ever that is... I know there are equipment for level 20's in the shops, but I feel like that's a really low level considering how easy it is to get to level 8. (At least in the Alpha.)
