Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I'm absolutely loving the game so far. The scale of the game I'd amazing and I found one place that still wasn't textured and had an unreachable chest. Only problem I've had is I don't see anyone else on the field. When I joined a buddy's fireteam yesterday I saw a ton of people playing at the same time.

Someone above mentioned it might be a bug... I just assumed I was on a quiet server shard.

Edit: also, very early on in this thread I read about how every small area (eg. Rocket yard) is instanced with a max of 6 or 12 players or something.

Played this for 5 hours

It feels like Mass Effects merged with Borderlands and had some Halo loving on the side. The entire game feels BIG as in watch out Kotick will do Halo numbers with this IP.

MP feels basic boring and simple no excitement at all, super quiet and horrible voice acting

Did anyone else go to the underground subway (Near the spawn point in Old Russia) and find the enemies with: ?? for their level?

Yep! I fired one burst at them, saw that it did next to no damage, did a 180 and ran out of there before they could annihilate me lol

Anyways this alpha has made the game a Day 1 purchase for me. Love the art style, love the UI, love the music, controls feel tight and responsive, and the co op gameplay I've done so far has been fantastic. Only complaint I have is the tight FoV someone else mentioned and that's far from a dealbreaker.

I really like how enemies do not pursue you very far. It always annoyed me in WoW and Oblivion that enemies would chase you for AGES. I like this game a lot.

Played multiplayer with another GAFer and enjoyed it a bit more.

I feel like there need to be more "There's no enemies here so you can pause" places like Borderlands 2 has.

its not new

Indeed, I like the way the controller fits in the hands but the triggers are awful.

I finish the coop mission, was fun but like other people said, the bosses were just standing there absorbing dmg and just had to pop time to time to shoot them and get their health down. Hopefully there will be more variety in the full game.
PvP is alright, although I'm not used to play fps on controller. Dislike the map with the vehicle.
Highlight of this game is atmosphere and music. Makes me yearn for a current gen Mass Effect somehow...

I adore the multiplayer in this game. So much fun to be had. It's just so satisfying to outsmart your enemies. I love it. At this very moment, I have to put it up there next to Halo 3 in terms of enjoyment.

Played an hour and a half with friends and strangers. I love it. It's the co-op PS4 game I have been waiting for. Plays really nice, gunplay is awesome, the co-op setup is cool, loads of customisation, missions, public events, interesting game world, everything. Look forward to see the Beta :)

Downloading now! I got a notification for it last night, but didn't even realize it was the Alpha. Can't wait to share impressions as I read the impressions you guys and gals are posting.

Yeah if this had been Oblivion they would have chased me to the nearest guard post, killed the guards, and then kept chasing me

I have the feeling Exos will be much less popular than other races and will need bonuses to rebalance the population. Also, while I tend to prefer female avatars in adventure games, the female Exo faces look bad. The male ones are much cooler.

I expect something like 50% Human - 35% Awakened - 15% Exo

Hey I picked exo as my race!

Probably going to make a new character and try out a different class cause he is maxed.

Haha, cool. Where is that?

It's not been too bad, got myself access to it earlier today (which i wasn't expecting). Was in a room with a complete random doing the same mission i was doing.

As it's been said, it's got the Halo feel to it with elements of Mass Effect thrown into the frey as well. Making this a damn fine experience.

Soooo, why is the world completely empty? Played last night and the Tower was packed with people. I'm literally the only person here. Something's wrong.

How the heck do I complete "The Undying" bounty? I know I have to do it in Crucible but I'm confused.

I guess that it is either a 10+ kill streak, or play a perfect game with 0 deaths. It says you have to get the Legendary award, and I'd worth a ton. So I guess it would be something difficult like that.

Yes.

I'd have to agree with the 1920x1080 call, aliases appear to stairstep in clear single pixels. The blurriness is probably a combination of the core imagery and some post-process AA, the whole thing has a fuzzy "look" to it that reminds me of aggressive FXAA, right down to the weirdly-rounded stairstep edges.

As beautiful as parts of the game are it looks like a last gen game remastered for current gen. That's why I don't understand why it's not 60fps

It's exactly the co-op experience I was looking for as well. I can't wait to see the final game. I'm dying to see the rest of the worlds they've created

In the description it says "earn a legend medal" but I don't know how to do that.

Played it for an hour or so, meh....didn't find it special, typical shooter with MMO elements.
Same way that I feel. I'm going to put more time in and hope my opinion changes but as of now I'm not impressed.

Finally starting to grow on me.

Whoa..

The coop has made me a believer, I will be there day one now.

That right there sums up how a lot of people seem to feel about this game now :)

Put a couple hours in to take a hunter to level 8. Quite enjoyable experience overall.

The Strike mission is okay. Boss battles leaned too far into the bullet spongy side. Probably mostly remedied by better gear.

Exploration mode was fun to just wander around in and do the super easy random missions.

The UI and typography used is generally pretty slick. I found that the submenu items in options was kind of awkward. Stuff like the submenu for controller settings (sensitivity and look inversion etc) was kind of awkward to get to, having to slide completely horizontally before moving around as to not change the menu category. This is kind of a nitpick, just something observed when people where playing it with the office PS4.

A couple hours in I found that my hands where pretty cramped up from the controller. I guess I had similar hand cramps when I played a ton of Infamous as well. WAY WAY less of a problem than for me at least compared to using a DS3. Guess I just need to take more breaks :)

I will be definitely be picking up the game in September. All that's left is to decide which platform to go with.

Many thanks :D

It's pretty stupid with blitzing Hive enemies, though. They'll charge you, they almost get to your location, you take a few steps back... "ohnoez he left our attack zone, time to run aawwwaaaaaaaaaayyy."

Yeah... Although I interpreted that as a 'retreat, regroup and attack again' as they left and then all came back at me at once.

Either that, or they fear me. I was a fairbfew levels higher, throwing knifed one of their buddies and they ran away. FEAR ME!

What class are you? I find even with the hunter, its not so bad. Just evade and jump lots
And do not be afraid to run and find cover for a bit. Enemies don't regen health. Even if you die.

warlock, yeah I'm in cover right now, holy crap lol. It's probably cz the mobs are 8-9 and I'm L5. I thought it'd be safe cz it's the L4 mission. Definitely designed for group play haha

It's annoying to have to navigate menus with a cursor. This isn't a mouse and keyboard game so it can get awkward

Does this game use the PS4 clock?

I was playing in the day and the tower looked bright and Sunny, now I am playing and it looks Night time like it is here in NYC.

What's this GAF clan? lemme join pls

I LOVE the UI. It's nice and clean and very aesthetically pleasing. Didn't encounter many EU players in the couple hours I played but maybe that's because it's late. Overall I've enjoyed my experience so far. Can't wait to try some more tomorrow.

Okay I found out how to unlock the Strike mission if anyone else is having problems with it. Do the story mission then go to Tower(the social hub) and follow all the missions there that take you around to the different vendors and after that it should unlock.

mine is still downloading, what has been gaf's impression s far?

Most people seem to like it.

Everyone has their own niggles and problems. But overall, a positive reaction.

Generally, people feel it is better playing coop, random or friends. And they think that the MP is unbalanced. There is a consensus that many of the tougher enemies rely more on sponging bullets than tactics.

Personally, I love it. Racked up 10+ hours with a hunter. So polished for an alpha.

There may appear to be a bug where nobody else is online though. You may find yourself alone in the world and the Tower. This is new today (loads of people on yesterday). But there are still people playing MP (The Crucible).
