Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

OK, i've played a good chunk now. And while i love the game, i do have a few complaints..

The FOV is way too tight. I see others complained about it..

That commentator voice in multiplayer mode is awful. Is this just a temp voice?

Ghost's voice doesn't suit him. It just sounds like he's reading it off a sheet of paper. It needs more robotic effect, or something, i don't know.. it just doesn't feel right.

"that wizard is from the moon!"

What's with the 1 grenade and having to wait? can he not carry 2 grenades at least?

Sorry if this has been addressed already, but is there any indication of what level you're expected to be for a particular quest? The quest I got went fine initially, but after travelling for awhile the enemies went from the level 4 range to the level 8-9 range (I'm only level 5). I'm able to take out a pack of level 8-9 enemies, but at the cost of almost all of my ammo and more time than I should be spending killing enemies.

After killing two packs of enemies I just gave up and turned it off, figuring to come back later and try a different quest. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention, but it would've been nice to know that this quest was way out of my league.

Edit: This is probably already understood by anybody who has played the game, but this was in the open world exploration portion.

I may be in the minority on this, but Destiny hasn't grabbed me at all. The alpha actually put me off more. Mindless shooting, and walk 5ft and enemies respawn (hopefully that changes), and voice acting that takes you out of the experience. Love the customization however. Very average game on all levels unfortunately.

I just noticed Ghost is voiced by Tyrion Lannister, I like him in Game of Thrones and all but it would have been better if it had a robotic or female voice.

I never got into Borderlands and this game feels just like it, and after playing the Alpha I am still unsure if I am going to get Destiny.

just found this delicious thing

What the fuck is wrong with these shooters that force you to use the rear triggers to fire? Are you fucking kidding me? There are six options for button layout and not one has shoot mapped to R1. Why?

It ain't called a ''trigger'' for nothing :p I hope they'll add the option for people like you who prefer R1.

They are trigger buttons for a reason. Using R1 to shoot never crossed my mind.

Sparrows are not supers. Everyone has them. Once you unlock your super in your focus(go to the upgrades for your subclass in your inventory if you haven't), you should have a super bar that fills blue and glows yellow when full. When it's full, you can use your ability which differs between classes. By default this is mapped to L1+R1.

Ha! Thanks! I had no idea about any of this. I could've assigned all of these awesome special moves long ago.

R1 was only there because PS1/2/3 didn't have proper triggers. Now that they've got proper triggers, they can go where they belong. This way's better, trust me.

I don't give a shit what they're called. It's stupid not to give the player the option. I would be able to fire with up on the d-pad if I want to. What's the issue with leaving that choice up to the player?

Your better off getting the PC version then if you want customizable controls.

The servers are currently offline? I'm trying to play but the game shows an error message with "marionberry"code :/

Edit: Nevermind, was an error on my router :P

It really has not much in common with Halo.
It's just "Bungie meets Borderlands" and "Bungie makes a better Borderlands"
Theme and story, it reminds me of Halo meets Warhammer 40K. Probably due to the space opera meets supernatural with a somewhat grim setting (at least for humanity).

Thanks for the answers guys. How about a heavy weapon? How do I get my first one?

Either from a random drop, or you can buy one from the Tower gunsmith. Glimmer (the currency) is handed out like candy, so I'm sure you'll be able to afford one.

The emotes (and run) are there. Emotes are the dpad direction PLUS the corresponding Square Circle Cross Triangle button. I'm forgetting Run but there was a chart posted from E3 a few pages back.

Oh wow, was wondering why the other 3 dpad buttons would be unused. This makes sense. Thanks.

Sprint is down on Dpad, which works great.

The FOV -- is it low? I think it's low FOV that can strain eyes, possibly cause motion sickness and the FOV seems to at least strain my eyes in this game. I know it's already been mentioned, but an FOV slider would be really nice -- or at least raise the FOV. I love Halo games by the way and I don't ever remember having a hard time with those games as far as my eyes feeling strained/motion sickness.

With that said, amazing game. I would say that it's on its way to living up to the hype based on this limited alpha.

What astounds me is the polish of the game for an alpha.
John Drake from Harmonix said on the GB Livestream that if the game is coming out in early September, that the game is basically done. They are just sitting on it now making adjustments until they need to certify it. It's not really an Alpha.

Yeah it feels complete. But then again, it's suppose to release in September. The alpha and beta are probably for balancing issues. They've been working on this game for a long time. Hopefully we see a visual boost in the final game.

Yep.

I hope they can make some final last minute tweaks to it, particularly making the voice acting more robotic and digitized. Sounds weird as is

The amount of input lag and the limited FoV is really bumming me out. The game seems alright otherwise, though I'm wondering how long its formula can hold my attention.

So there are a lot of different areas with high lvl mobs. I've ran into about 4 different areas blocked off by them. I'll try and post them later. Just exploring seems to be a blast so far. Might get ready to do my first Strike.

FOV is the first thing I noticed the second I was in the world. Its really distracting.

Input lag seems to be present too.

Is it just me or anyone else, feels that this game could you use more frames per second? My eyes feel a little rough when playing it

I've been watching quite a bit of Destiny footage and I'm kinda weirded out by how you turn into an orb and how the Sparrow just materializes out of nowhere. Is there any lore to explain this? I know its dumb but I don't have the game to play so I'm fixating a little bit.

So has anyone mentioned that the scale of the game's world is not as big as they said a year ago? I found the area that they shown at last year's E3 with the cars and stuff. Now if anyone watched the IGN back stage demo of the area will remember that the guy turned around and mentioned that all of that land is playable space.

If you go there in the alpha, you'll just be met with a death if you go down there. I wonder if it's just because of alpha or did the area really get toned down or maybe he lied.

The strike seems a bit....overtuned? in terms of the enemies in a couple of events (also the Devil Walker HP seems a bit excessive for an introductory group instance, since I doubt there will be one before level 6).

The weapon and character levelling is poorly explained, I was watching a couple of stream while I was working out, and quite a few people didn't know to go into their abilities to pick them.

The lack of a map may be annoying when we get full worlds, but that remains to be seen (I like to place waypoints in far off places in games and then go check them out). Couldn't find a way to trade equipment with your party/fireteam which may be annoying. The Tower is incredibly small for a hub.

Mob respawn speed is insane atm. No comments on Balancing as we are lacking a lot of info and are capped at level 8. Any talk of game balance in an online RPG type of gameplay is useless prior to max level, when we can compare all classes at full capabilities.

Also FoV. Either gives a slider, increase it and/or reduce gun size. Bit crazy at the moment.

These are my current annoyances with the game, but they are all fairly minor at this point in time. I am having a blast playing the game, and can't wait for the beta to have a bit more of freedom with the game (hopefully!)

Yep. Whenever I see this complaint I assume the player has only ever used older DualShock controllers. R1 to fire was only a concession because of how terrible those triggers were.

I;m at level 8 and kinda done, if the beta does not show more than this as far as strike variety goes I may skip it.. I don't like deathmatch that much. the core game is interesting but I do want to see what they do with the rest.
