Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

20 mins seems a bit fast, I'm impressed. I'd like to see a run that quickly I'll see if I can get dig one out on youtube, my fastest took me 38 minutes. I really wonder if there's something I'm missing to chunk that much out.

Keys to success:

You can run past the initial encounter. People actually use their supers in the defend the hack point section. (No idea why no one ever uses their supers).

Everyone rockets the same leg of the Devil Walker. Snipe the core for double crit damage (1500-2000 damage) each hit. For Septiks Prime, obviously hit the eye portion for crit damage. Use supers on adds. I dunno, if you have a competent group, it should take no where near 90 minutes.

Feel free to agree/disagree!

Not much to disagree with to be honest.

I think the lack of story/explanation is due to the fact that it is Alpha. They are just trying to get some extra testing and network junk worked out.

In terms of the numbers/healthbar, meh. It is Borderlands/Halo, it is to be expected...they should give an option to turn it off though.

Fully agree on the bullet sponge stuff and it is due to the leveling system. They only have a few options here. One, have all enemies just straight up scale with your level. So that level one scrub mob is the same at later levels. That type of system sucks. They can do what they are doing, basically having certain areas and certain enemies X level and you simply get crushed if you try it early. This system is okay, but creates problems of its own. Option three, simply lock off higher level areas. This is problematic cause it kills exploration.

The biggest issue is the bullet sponge stuff, even on enemies that are 1-2 levels higher than you it sucks. You are stuck emptying 30+ rounds into them, which isn't all that fun. It is basically pop out of cover take 5 shots, go back in cover, repeat for X amount of time.

I'm hoping we get some better tools for navigation, cause you just feel utterly lost without much information on where you are supposed to go. Not to mention just mistakenly walking into an area that is 'higher' level.

Also really hate the FoV as well as trying to ascertain where I was shot from.

Does anyone find the low-lit areas unappealing?

Extremely, but I suppose it is my own fault. I followed the brightness option like a dumbass at the start, always a mistake but I was going for immersion and 'intended' environment. Mistake.

Has anybody killed the dudes underground near the start of the free roam area? We fought those guys with a group of 5 for over 10 minutes and barely dented them. There must be a trick we're missing.

Best thing was jumping in Lik's game, rollin' up behind him in my 74-Z wannabe speeder, jumping off and giving a dance.

You're welcome, Lik.

Yes, the fact that they're overleveled to gate off content?

No

I need to find a vendor with a rocket launcher, haven't find one yet. And that could be it I only ran with 1 other friend, the random died quite a lot. I'll give it a go in a full pre-made team should be faster. Good idea to snipe just need to find a decent one or I'll go bet on one at the engram vendor.

And yeah most people seems to hold on their Supers quite a bit.

Man, I'm absolutely loving it.

The worst thing about this game is gonna be the wait after the alpha is over.

Got all 3 classes to 8, I'm pretty sure I'll be rolling with Warlock - do the classes have any weapon type affinities? Like maybe the pieces of armor roll bonuses for certain types of weapons only for a Sentinel or something? Really hope that's not the case, my biggest gripe with Borderlands was the effective restriction of weapon choices for the classes.

And I have to say I really like the Strike mission. When I did it for the first time at level 6 with lvl 5 and 6 teammates it felt a bit too tough and the bosses felt too long, but now that I know what's going on it feels great. Also, knowing to pick out the Fallen Snipers makes the horde phase so much easier.

Tried the PvP for a single game, but that's where my inexperience with console FPS comes out. In PvE the pad feels perfectly fine, but in PvP it's obvious I've played maybe 30h FPS on a pad total, and that's including Quake 2 on PSX without analog sticks. Yeah. Will be more fun once I get used to controls :)

Only real complaint so far is the FOV, this is my first console shooter in many a year...and holy shit this FOV is worst! Everything else seems fun so far, I have a friend to play with so that might add to it. I dont know if I would be enjoying this as much solo.

God I really want to like the game. Hell, I really enjoyed what I played of it. It's pretty much what I wanted Borderlands to be (I don't like Borderlands AT ALL).

Problem is, god this FOV is making me sick. Usually with FPS's I go "Well it's gonna be on PC so it'll be fine I can find some way to change it" but this time it isn't on PC. You know what, fuck it. If this was on PC I'd fucking be into it so much it might be my "go-to FPS" for a long time

FOV as in Field of View ? What's wrong with it exactly, perhaps I'm dumb but I never understood how it makes it hard on the eyes (and I'm near sighted, I wear glasses since I'm 6 years old). I don't get it what seems to be causing the problem. I saw it mention on a few games on Reddit and GAF, tired of not understanding heh.

It is 'zoomed' in too much for my tastes.

My initial impressions went from "this is pretty cool" to "OMG I dig this I'm going to sell my launch PS4 & get the white bundle" to "I cannot buy this, I will accomplish nothing with my life."

It's good but I'm turning it off now.

Also, if you told me this was a PS3 game I'd believe you. The transition screens in space look amazing but the stuff you actually run around in doesn't scream uber next gen. Not sure if that's a concession to online play, or if it's because they pared down the assets for the alpha download.

Okay I'm all in on this game about about 4 hours of strike and pvp. Did anyone else have a hell of a time on the level 6 strike? It took FOREVER to wear down a couple of the boss type enemies.

Love it though.

Also CQC needs some work.

Have to say that ADS isn't bad at all. Feels pretty much just like the battle rifle to me. Hip fire is fine 75% of the time, anything at a bit of a distance I aim and head shot.

I wasn't feeling pvp...kept getting hit by something that made my view wavy and then I was dead before I could tell where the shot came from. I like co-op play more anyway.

Well here's the first result from Google that explains it:

http://www.incgamers.com/2013/05/why-good-fov-options-are-crucial-to-pc-games

Basically low FOV's can make people suffer from motion sickness. For me it just gives me a headache and puts me in a grumpy mood which is later followed by "Fuck this I'll go play Battlefield 4 at a 110 FOV so I can play comfortably for once." It seems that devs behind console FPS's always assume you're sitting far away from the screen. I think it's bullshit to assume everyone has the same setup, as I sit fairly close to my monitor, which is also my monitor for playing console games.

Thanks for the link. And I hope they add the option if it makes some people feel sick.

Bungie should tone down the respawns, repeating quests traversing the same terrain, it's getting to be a drag and hinders your sense of progression.

Think I'll farm the strike mission for loot. Most efficient yes?

I got to level 7, almost an 8. Ran most of the missions I could. There weren't too many that I thought were mind blowing just yet. The bosses were a lot of fun and I really like this hunt feature. I felt the enemies stayed the same throughout this alpha. I hope that changes when it launches. I really really hope there are lots of planets and alien species to uncover/fight against. I like it more than Halo because it doesn't feel like a military shooter.

There's not much else to do except PvP and level grind the missions again. I did enjoy what I played, but I want more. Man, reading some of these flaws on GAF are depressing as f*ck!

The more I play Warlock the more I think the lack of armor may not be for me. Going to start a Titan tomorrow.

That's the only class I haven't checked out yet. Sounds like a regular old glass cannon, but with the current dynamic it might not work out as well in strikes when you have to be able to hold your own in the middle of a shitstorm.

Kind of itching for another strike. The current one wasn't that bad...it was just the mid boss that seemed to take forever.

Yep. Whenever I see this complaint I assume the player has only ever used older DualShock controllers. R1 to fire was only a concession because of how terrible those triggers were.

Could be a preference thing. The triggers were awful but I thought using L1/R1 felt more tactile and offered more control than the 360 triggers (especially for controlled burst fire). Let's not fool ourselves, neither are anything like an actual gun.

I love Peter Dinklage, but damn, he sounds bored in this.

I think it's more detached since he's a machine and all. I assume it's explained in the beginning of the campaign or something. They could've modified the voice to make it more robotic and less human sounding.

But then no one would know they spent a stupid amount of money getting Peter Dinklage!

I've cleared the Strike on Warlock on legend. It holds its own just fine. In fact, in my fireteam of 2 titans and 1 warlock (me), I had the least deaths. 6, compared to the 2nd titan's 9, and the 3rd titan's 20+(it was his first time).

Same.

Guilty Spark just has this perfectly eery way of having a tone that is all too enthusiastic for the very dark things he says, such as in his HALO Anniversary Terminal cutscenes that were added.

Dinklage doesn't hit the inhuman vibe enough to sound more than conventional as a companion.

Thoughts:

Things That Bug Me That Aren't Fixable
--------------------------------------------
- Enemy and enemy fire variety is low; they look and behave different - but certainly not enough given the races and factions we're meant to distinguish.
- Vendors are completely without life or interesting features. Their animations are bland.
- The Tower area is weakly designed for third-person movement. You could tell me it's the hub of a shooter with 1/20th the budget and I'd believe you.
- Bosses are borrrrrinngly over-healthy. I have no idea what they're going for here. Repeat the strategy twice, everybody unload a supercharge once into it, then that's it. Oh, there's more? Why? Even Konami 90s bosses are dead by now.

Things That Bug Me I Think Are Fixable
-----------------------------------------------
- Edge-screen teammate signals to give an indication where teammates are if not in front of you.
- When a teammate is revivable, they currently go from blue to ... green. :/ Why not flashing orange to line against the teal for the usual signal?
- The XP gain counter on the right is a green circle with a cross inside. How readable is this in the end? Why not just have the number inside the circle?
- The cursor approach in the menus is not something I think works, looks good, or adds to the fantasy - but the main problem with it is switching areas - go to Level Select, then Level, then Confirm. You will 100% drag the cursor from one side of the screen to the other in every level select situation. Why?
- In the Tower, triangle does nothing. Why can't it be like it is during a death, letting me return to orbit immediately?

I don't want to think of Destiny as a déjà vu Halo World. Super Master Chief Edition. And it's not really. I just hope they add more content. One thing I thought they might of had was more outposts, but from what I get out of it there is one main location for gear upgrades and equipment.

I thought you were going to be able to fly on ships with other players and landing zones were going to open up into giant fields or whatever. This makes me think you'll sync on a map, which isn't bad in all. The déjà vu though can be good and bad all at the same time.

The venders look like Mass Effect trading cards.
