Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

PlayStation just emailed me an alpha code, I hadn't even signed up or anything. Gonna download now, excited. Impressions seem to be extremely positive.
 
I got to level 8, and while I enjoyed myself, I started to get bored as I went on. Gear disparities are frustrating. A team did the raid boss on Legend difficulty with me, and it was just so goddamn hard to kill elites. I had to blow a cooldown every time they were summoned, and I am in all greens.

I also don't feel like there are huge differences between the classes. Why pick a Warlock over a...brute guy? You both get grenades, and the AoE special isn't that different between the two. Meanwhile, the brute dude has a ton of extra health, and my Warlock gets stomped a lot in 1v1 PvP encounters. When I have all my abilities, it feels great. The rest of the time...less so. I don't really feel distinguished the way a class should. Though perhaps Blink would change that. I don't intend to grind that out just to see, though.

This game needs a evade, or roll button badly, melee weapons would've been cool too, some of the enemies wields swords, a quicker way to summon the ghost would be nice too, tired of pressing the touch pad.
Yeah, is is pretty easy to get fucked by enemy ambushes in this game. The raid boss spawns a group of elites behind you - what the hell is that? Frustration, that's what.
 
Dinklage's voice I'm sure is exactly as intended.

It just feels so 80s sci-fi, which is what I assume Bungie was going for

I've seen this argument but "80's scifi" means what exactly? Peter Pinklage is an Emmy award winning actor, in this he sounds like he's straight up mocking the material.

Have you played hunter? They have knives and the double jump is a pretty effective evade.

What would you suggest? I'm not really sure how they're going to get any faster than a button press. I mean, I guess they could map it to a different button, but I feel like the touchpad depresses at almost exactly the same rate as all of the other buttons on the DS4.
 
Finished my 3rd level 8 character. Of the three I think I liked the Titan the best. That smash can get you out of jams when enemy's swarm you and the extra armor doesn't hurt either. Fun fun game. Even just roaming and shooting enemies to grind out weapon upgrades was enjoyable because the gun play is so right. It's got that wow grind zone going where I don't get worn out and can get into a nice groove. I might pop back on tomorrow or Sunday to do a little moe PVP. I hate the lunar map but the other one is fun.
 
Anyone else having some connectivity issues at the moment? I was disconnected from the Tower and now I cant invite people or join any fireteams :(
 
So is there anything to do in the Tower? I went there briefly and saw that I could buy stuff, but I couldn't tell if there's anything else I was supposed to do. I noticed a green waypoint marker that seems to want me to go somewhere, but I don't immediately see how to get there. It looks blocked off or something. The green waypoint also appears above the little Tower image when choosing where to launch.

I got confused by that too, you have to go downstairs and through a tunnel to reach the waypoint. Don't go near the wall, there's some stairs before that that are easy to miss if you're fixated on the green waypoint.

That's what I did the first time - didn't know if the gate would go down after I hit level 5. Came back to the tower and found the stairs under the gate.
 
Just but max level with my warlock.


Destiny has me hooked. So good. The atmosphere and sense of exploration is fantastic. The day night cycle is a huge addition, I am glad it made it in.

So satisfying going back to the devil walker and beating it by myself after it gave 3 guardians at once the fight of our lives a few levels back. Weapons feel great, and I love that each weapon can be upgraded and leveled up. Adds a whole new element to the game.



Going to start a Hunter tomorrow.
 
That's the only class I haven't checked out yet. Sounds like a regular old glass cannon, but with the current dynamic it might not work out as well in strikes when you have to be able to hold your own in the middle of a shitstorm.

Kind of itching for another strike. The current one wasn't that bad...it was just the mid boss that seemed to take forever.

My fave class. Nova bomb destroys all and the grenade takes health fast. Very fun to play.

Every Green weapon (and blue and exotic) have a skill tree. Press Triangle on it and you'll see the upgrades. You need to acquire XP while having the gun equiped to spec it. Green guns so far have a tiny skil tree but exotic weapon and higher level weapon have some branching choice and are massive compared to those we have at the moment.
 
After leveling up a Titan and a Warlock I find the Titan to be OP as fuck.

You can't. Scopes are, however, potential "upgrades" on green weapons. Check their details with Triangle. You get xp on your gun by using it, unlocking an attack up power, new scopes and so on.

How did I not notice this?!?!?!

This is alpha, there is no way this is the finalized VO for a fricken arena gameplay.

Question: Is there an end to Free Roam: Old Russia, Earth? I've been here for the past 2 hours or so and there seems to be no end in sight in terms of missions. Do I just leave when I'm bored or what?

And why is everything level 4?

No i've only played with the Warlock, but ill definitely check out hunter now before the Alpha ends

Hmm maybe one of the D-pad buttons, instead of having generic expressions on them.

From what I've seen they seem to be randomly generated from a set pool. I don't think you can run out of them.
 
How do you reach these caves I'm supposed to survey? What am I missing?

If I'm thinking of the same area, there are two levels to the caves; if you go in at the bottom you won't be able to double jump up. You have to go outside and up a hill to access the top part. I just went up a hill and did a quick jump across a gap to access the caves.

Poor description, but hopefully it helps a little.
 
Ok now that I put in 12 hours with this my impressions:

Game looks great for a cross gen game and it's fairly colourful. Shooting feels good guns sound unique I always enjoyed how Bungie handles their gunplay as opposed to other developers. This game has a world and I really like how they present the world from what I have seen I am very interested in digging into the lore. I love the look of the city I hope we get to explore more of the city than what we have now.

Vehicles are a great touch it makes getting around more interesting, I just hope one of the perks or upgrades we get allows for shooting some vehicles. They control really well and look good.


I do feel that old Tyrion kind of phoned in the voice work as well as some of the competetive multiplayer voice actors but I can live with that, this game. Also ammo can be too scare during the bulletspongy guys. I am sure as I level this will become less of a issue with ammo and ding better damage

I have played the Warlock and I love how they play their powers are great and how their stats are built really appeals to me. I also like the subclass names as well (Voidwalker huh? My warlock in wow had a voidwalker named krakmoth) the ultimate moves are great as well I love nailing a great bunch of things with a well aimed attack. They really can be great in competetive multiplayer as our grenades and ultimates are really good.

I would like for the helm to have toggle on or off (No good if I can only see my flowing locks in old russia when I have just dusted fools) another thing in some places spawn rate is kind of much. We need some relax spots as well after a fire fight.

In closing Bungie is making a great game and I am glad they left Halo this is just as compelling and since it's their thing we can see some great things coming. I just hope for the beta we get more variety. This is the way you show off your game not these odd clips and just one area over and over and screen shots after screen shots after silence , that has done damage to the game, please from now on move away from that tell your marketing guys to work on that exclusive deal and dlc that actually gives you sales.
 
I didn't get a chance to play this again today. How long does the alpha run, through the weekend? (Didn't see that info in the OP)

edit: Heh, just found it. Until June 15th.

Titan, punches Hallowed Knights in the face and doesn't afraid of anything.

My favourite Titan moment was still coming across a 3-4 Lvl... 8? Hallowed Knights, and I was like welp, my ammo's going to deplete itself, I'm just going to jump and punch, rinse repeat and rely on fist havoc/grenades.

Out-brawling those bullet sponges felt good.
 
Ok so I came across this area called Cosmodrome. It has like 100 rusted cars but no emnemies or anything. Am I missing something here?

It'll be used for story purpose (not in the Alpha) bungie probably forgot to add monster in free roam in that area. We saw Bungie playthrough that part during E3 2013.
 
In Exploration, a fellow GAFfer showed me a cave in the Grotto that housed a level 20 Ogre. Scary!

We then went on to crush the opposition in the Crucible. Good games, fellow GAFfers!
 
Just went 30-6 camping with a shotgun lmao. This game is dope.

I'm really not a fan of Bungie taking shotguns and snipers and making them secondaries. It just makes people too lethal.

Special ammo should be a lot harder to get. People are always well stocked with shotgun and sniper ammo. It just takes the thoughtfulness out of using such weapons. I'd actually rather have shotguns and snipers moved to heavy weapons. There is a lot of variety for specials without adding shotguns and snipers to them.

It's weird that the LMG is a heavy weapon, when it absolutely sucks. It needs a good buff, and should be able to rip through vehicles and enemies. Especially when rocket launchers are tied to this class level. No one is going to choose LMGs.

Most practically, I just wish special ammo either was rarer, or dropped less ammo. I can get like 7 bullets for a sniper, which can be incredibly deadly.

Just reduce a special ammo crate to like 3-4 bullets, and that way, people would actually treat them like they are special, instead of running around with them.

Or, just move shotguns and snipers to heavy weapons, and make heavy weapons more attainable. As it is now, you lose your heavy weapon if you die, which is silly IMO.

Bottom line: I feel shotguns and snipers as special weapons greatly devalues the power of these weapons. They should be lethal, but not everyone should so easily be able to have a good amount of ammo for them. It makes sense in PvE, but not PvP
 
Peter Dinklage is absolutely doing his Tyrion voice. It's hard to not notice. There's an element of deadpan to it but it doesn't sound robotic enough to be an early AI. At the same time it doesn't sound lively enough for it to be an advanced AI (like Cortana). They need to digitize his voice or something. That line where he said 'that wizard came from the moon' nearly killed me. So bad lol

The writing could get a lot more leeway if it sounded more like a robot rather than a stream of consciousness. Right now he really does come across as a person... reading shitty lines

We need Marty...
 
So I'm at the Cosmodrome in the far area with the slew of cars on the broken bridge. Is there any point to that area? No enimies or mission I've ran across so far, not even a loot chest haha. Kind of out of the way to only be rewarded with a sweet vista.

Truth, if the want balance they are gonna need to be nerfed. Gonna max out the Hunter when I get home from work to see what they are about. Right now Warlocks come off as the weakest.

Love this fucking game though. I just hope they have more of a plot then the Alpha shows.

Yeah, I thought I recognized the area and I was like sweet, but nothing, haha. Looking forward to seeing what they do with it, it's a pretty cool environment.
 
Don't know if that's the place, but there was a hidden path down a cliffside near that had a cave that I saw a... Level 16 Hallowed Knight with a giant sword.

Well, bullets do no damage too to that one too.
There is a hidden place underneath some downed Helicopters with a dead ghost. It's near one of those Hive spires/snips(?). There is a battle between the Hive and Fallen going on too.
