Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Beacon quests are really just something for you to do while you're in free-roam mode – they're not the point of free-roam mode. When I was exploring Old Russia for the first time, I didn't touch the beacon quests because I was having too much fun looking around.

I kind of wonder if they should of included those in the alpha. Seems like a lot of people are thinking the entire game is fetch quests.

Also I have to mention. The audio design in this game is just incredible. I am not sure if its just my new Sony speakers I purchased but holy cow Destiny sounds incredible. The bass response from my sub, the clarity and reverb effects..wow.

anyone else agree?

My new av receiver got it's first real work out playing this! In the 'campaign' mode I got sidetracked into destroying 3 enemy mining drills, the OST cranked up several notches and was fantastic,

It is nice. Music is amazing as well.

BF is still the king of sound though.

I am going to lose my life to this game when it ships. Loving the Alpha so much.

This really is just the same old mmo game design with higher production value
somewhat dull being honest.

something also feels odd i don't know what it is but its a dullness.

Like

Again.

Explore missions are a bit repetitive, yes.

There's only 1 story mission and 1 strike mission in this alpha. Relax.

Isn't it Bungie's fault if people think its a bunch of fetch quests
They did design it and if people are getting confused than its on Bungie for not making it clear game design wise.

Yes and no. From what I've heard, what Bungie is trying to do with the Alpha and Beta is to let players experience the game cold turkey to find out what is and isn't intuitive. If there are people thinking the game is nothing but fetch quests, then Bungie needs to make the game more intuitive in that area.

One thing they could do better with the explore missions is make them actually go around the map. If you just go to the closest one you will often be in the same area over and over.

I actually went exploring and found some pretty cool areas ignoring the missions.

playstation plus is required for crucible... that blows

graphics arent all that impressive but I guess that comes with the MMO territory

Did this alpha even have set requirements for users or was it just like a huge raffle? I got instant access for going to the E3 press event in the theaters.

Having enemies that aren't elites in different armor is what I like. I just hope you aren't stuck with 3 to 4 different races all with the same type of scout, machine, and elite type. I'd like to see some sort of poltergeist.

Ran around inside the Wall and ended up on the other side where the E3 Demo from 2013 started. The level design is some of the best I've seen in quite a while.

Fooling around last night in Destiny with a friend was maybe the most fun I've had with my PS4 - and gaming in general in awhile.

Now take that with a grain of salt, because I can't recall the last time I was able to get a game going with some friends online -- but I do think that a large part of it was simply that Destiny is a already a fantastic game even at this supposed 'alpha' stage. For me it's marrying the Halo combat I've always loved, with the larger mechanics of an MMO - exploring, questing, and factions.

Had an absolute blast.

Played for about 4 hours last night. Wow. This game. So far I had no issues with any lag or getting kicked or anything, it ran really smooth.

Playing this game with a few friends is an absolute blast! It was also fun going lone wolf.

This game is a day one purchase for sure! Im already pumped for the beta. I played through the Devils lair and did a decent amount of exploring, got to level 8 then just hung around with a few randoms showing off our weapons, it was so much fun. That shotgun is very satisfying.

Will play some crucible today after work. I havn't even tried the PVP and I am already completely sold on this game!

Finished Devil's Lair just now and hit level 8 in the process. Overall, still awesome. Will create a Titan class and fiddle around. Generally didn't find that too hard. Just shoot at an enemy at various parts of the body until the hits become yellow; and then spam that part until they're dead.

There were three of us (Warlock and two Hunters). I just sniped and shot my way out of the big tank thing and ditto with the Eye boss. I just went out of cover to get ammo. Rinse and repeat.

Hopefully, other bosses have varying strategies to take them down.

Only concern is, Bungie said the level cap is only at 20, right? If so, I can see that being too low already. Then again, I assume they'll add more powers/abilities and a higher cap at some point once the game's out.

I've never been a fan of MMOs, and it's never-ending game design. While Bungie hasn't said anything, I really, really hope there's an end to Destiny. I've said it before, I know, but even if it's 30 hours or more, as long as I know there's an end game, that's good enough for me.

Those complaining about missions being repetitive, yeah, I know what you're saying, but this is an alpha with ONE story-related mission. Chill out a bit and let's wait and see.

I agree that there's not enough loot drops. Maybe they want players to really use the Tower shops instead of just hunting for loot?

Overall, still a very positive experience and can't wait to get my hands on the full game.

One the best things Bungie could do is actually open the beta to everyone when the time comes.

Videos don't do all of the mechanics in the game justice. I decided to watch a stream yesterday and I still maintain it looks boring.

Yea no. Nothing I hate worse then groups who try to be exclusive. As long as someone's not a dick then they are more then welcome. There are a lot of people who lurk gaf but love it just as much as any of us. There are also a lot of former gaffers who were banned for some reason or another but are good folks. With this criteria they would not be able to get in.

So basically as it is now it's open to anyone as long as they are cool. If anyone sees someone being a dick then they'll be removed. Now come retail yea we might limit it a bit more. They may have to PM here or leave a message in their request explaining how they know about dGAF, might have to know a gaffer but even then as long as they aren't assholes why not welcome them?.

Yeah didn't think about that. Sounds good.

Hopefully we can get a Clan thread going soon. We should still promote some people who will monitor regularly to keep things in check. Let's make it the best clan on Destiny.

question. when you scroll over the earth and see the map, how much of that is what the alpha is? like just a small part?

will there be other areas of earth to explore?

Well I'm still having the issue where half (or more) of the times I go to the tower or anywhere else, there are no other players visible.

So I spent a few hours with the game, and will give my personal impressions. I played the Hunter class, and been doing some free roam missions, PvP and the main story missions. Currently about to hit level 8, played for a good 3-4 hours. I've played all Bungie games from Halo 1 - Reach (yes even ODST), and spent countless hours on each halo game, specifically the Multiplayer .

Positives
+ World: the world of destiny feels great!, open sci-fi world, feels like they took all the positives out of Mass Effect, and created their own unique vast world, loving it!

+ The Tower: I can see this becoming a great meeting place when the full game launches, cool idea, like how you gotta come back to unlock items, etc

+ The Overall Design/ UI: very clean, very efficient, quick and seamless, wish more games had quick navigation and clean UI like Destiny

+ Feels like a Bungie game:: from shooting mechanics, to grenades, to vehicles, to weapons, definitely a Bungie game, definitely a positive

+Players jumping in and out of games: really cool doing your own missions and having multiple players jump in and out of your game, very cool!

Negatives
- Voice Acting : while I don't see it as annoying as some make it out to be, I feel the voice acting completely takes you out of the experience. It just doesn't go with the world, and feels really out of place. I don't understand having have a sci fi world, space exploration, and machina everywhere, and then have it voiced by super clean English accented voice actors. I appreciate the voice work, sounds clean, but I find it very distracting and DOES really take you out of the experience

- Controls: while for the most part it feels great, I get a feeling the sensitivity is inconsistent, and somewhat sluggish. When coming out of a sprint, sometimes the turning speed feels drastically different and sluggish each time. May be tied to the frame rate, may even be the auto aim, but there is something happening with the Sensitivity which doesn't feel clean and stable all the time

- Open World missions and objectives:: the open world missions seem very "grindy". Go here and collect this, kill x amount of enemies, etc. I guess it will be fun with a bunch of friends + chat, but I dont see many people staying in this "gametype". The free roam feels like the game plots you in a big map, and you just go retrieve beacons to do little missions here and there. Also i found myself lost of some missions, where the object wasn't very clear at all, forcing me to abandon the mission as I couldn't find what to do or where to go....

- Bosses: my biggest complaint, and my biggest worry for the full game . Bosses in Destiny have WAYYYYY too much HP, to a point where for I felt I was playing the game incorrectly. Being only massive bullet sponges, every boss encounter simply consists of shooting at that boss for a good 15-20 minutes straight, and 0 variety. Not much creativity, not much skill, just shooting.... I found myself running out of ammo constantly while versing bosses, and forcing myself to die only to re-gain all my ammo, to again just continuously shoot at the boss. It isn't fun after 5 minutes, and having bosses being a big main point in each "raid", I can find this being extremely frustrating if bosses are like this in the final game. If Bungie are pushing re-playability through different raids, and boss encounters, I do not see myself coming back for a 2nd playthrough if each boss is just a massive bullet sponge. Also being hit by a single "cannon" from each boss will kill you instantly, and again makes the entire boss encounter feel very unbalanced and not fun.

- Graphics : while the world is beautiful, and impressive, the image quality itself isn't that "clean". There tends to be "blurr" and possibly blurry textures. Yes it is running at 1080p, but at that resolution, I did expect a much cleaner image quality. One of the reasons i stop playing KZ:SF was because multiplayer looked extremely blurry, and it really turned me off. Where Destiny isn't as bad as KZ, playing other shooters and Bungie's previous titles, the blur is a little off-putting.

Before the Alpha I was very hyped about Destiny, and couldn't wait to play Bungie's Epic new IP. Coming out of the Alpha, I am still excited and will be picking it up day 1, but I do feel a lot of work needs to be done in order to polish game play mechanics, and definitely overall balance.

Well I'm still having the issue where half (or more) of the times I go to the tower or anywhere else, there are no other players visible.

I got an empty tower when I played in the early afternoon (PST time), but it was full in the evening. I'm NAT Type 2 if it makes a difference. I heard it is a bug and Bungie is aware of it.

Anyone who played since Thursday find the game is slower now?

My character models on the character select screen take longer, when choosing a new weapon from the inventory it appears invisible in your hands for a bit before it loads in game. Other little things like that that never happened earlier.

Its an alpha. Have you played a strike with a few friends or did the Crucible?

Yeah I don't think it has anything to do with our internet. It seems like an extremely common bug.

I kind of wonder if they should of included those in the alpha. Seems like a lot of people are thinking the entire game is fetch quests.

Doesn't help that the one included story mission is a go-there-kill-that quest. Strikes are the same way. Go there, kill that. But then again, if someone doesn't enjoy those kinds of quests, they shouldnt be buying these kinds of games. My problem with explore mode is that Old Russia is dead. Bland. Boring. Dead. The fact that quest givers are blinking beacons on the ground only serves to highlight how devoid of life the area is.

Is drop in drop out co-op a thing? I just stumbled across 3 other players who were doing their own thing. Killed a bunch of hive with them and went onto my way.

Had to look up their PSN IDs and turns outs they are real people lol

There are parts of the world that are open to all. As you pass certain points though, you stop seeing other players.

One cool little detail I noticed while walking around the, at the time, playerless Tower was my characters head actually turns to look wherever the camera moves while standing still. Nice touch. The attention to detail in this game is amazing.

This game is going to be huge and sell some huge numbers. Activision is probably wishing it hadn't been delayed until September because it's so close to call of duty release.

Any ideas what the touchpad and share functions are going to be on the Xbox One? I'm not gonna lie, they're very convenient even though I still am not fond of the stick layout.
