Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I finally got a blue piece of gear to drop. 2 stats on it instead of one. And it's level 11. Boooooo.

I have a blue Hunter cloak, it looks fabulous. But nope, it's level 11. I have 2 other pieces of blue gear, one which dropped when doing the Strike. I wonder if the beta will have a higher level cap.

I also, just received an alpha code for PS4 from Amazon. My brother did too, but without pre ordering. So, I guess being an Amazon PS4 customer gets you a code, too.

This really is just the same old mmo game design with higher production value
somewhat dull being honest.

something also feels odd i don't know what it is but its a dullness.

Like
Get Mission go kill 10 dudes
Get Mission collect 10 items
Get Mission Examine object

Over and over.

New Place

Get Mission go kill 10 dudes
Get Mission collect 10 items
Get Mission Examine object

Again.

I said basically this earlier and no one understood. Tons of console gamers are pretty fresh to the mmo style so it seems really cool. I'm luke warm to the game because the Co op is fun and it's a good shooter but the missions and design of the game itself is super generic to me. My friends all think it's amazing but they don't pc game at all.

As someone who's spent a lot of time with both competitive shooters and MMOs my experience with this game has been very positive.

Destiny comes across as incredibly confident in what it's attempting to do and although it's in need of a few tweaks I think it's gonna be a success. All the gameplay systems appear to be well thought out, and its hard to describe - it just feels clean, and fairly seamless.

That being said, I'm definitely part of the contingent that's disappointed by the FOV and the 30fps limit (This bothers me more from the competitive multiplayer side of things). The only thing that allows me to look past it is the knowledge that everyone's on the same playing field.

Like all console shooters that suffer from 30fps and a low FOV I find that increasing the sensitivity is almost a must.

If you cant see much outside of your direct line of sight, and your peripheral awareness suffers, and what you can see is limited to a less than ideal framerate - the ability to react fast is even more important, I tried 10 sens but it was a bit too jerky. Enjoying 7 or 8 though.

This game is so going to get it's hooks in to me when it comes out. It's that loot aspect coupled with the freaking amazing gunplay.

I wish grenade recharge was a shade quicker, but that's about it. I think I'm going to tune out and not overplay the Alpha or Beta so I don't burn out before I get to really make some progress.

Great game. Day one.

If you pre-order digitally using psn- do you still get beta access?

I know retailers give out codes, wondering about digitally.

Btw- just noticed you can upgrade some green colored armor in each pieces sub menu/description.

pretty sure that cooldown is going to be ridiculously low at high levels with high level gear, especially if you gear specifically for a cooldown reduction on it

Oh, is there a way to rapid switch between primary weapons? Triangle does the business between primary and secondary but I'd like to be able to switch between auto and scout rifles or shotty and sniper for example.

I've played Wow for a bunch of years and all I can say is that this is an alpha so I'll bet there will be more diverse missions etc. Also, there just isnt anything like this on consoles. And the quality of this alpha is very high, so yeah it's pretty amazing.

Holy crap that lv. 6 strike mission at the Devil'ls Lair was so awesome. Took my team almost 2 hours but wow, I'm gonna be super excited if there's a bunch of those in the final game.

I have a question, this game needs PS+ for everything or only for Coop and MP?

Meaning I can play it solo if I want without the need of PS+?

Did this alpha even have set requirements for users or was it just like a huge raffle? I got instant access for going to the E3 press event in the theaters.

Having enemies that aren't elites in different armor is what I like. I just hope you aren't stuck with 3 to 4 different races all with the same type of scout, machine, and elite type. I'd like to see some sort of poltergeist.

im sure there were requirements but I got the code from a generous fellow on GAF and the game is basically explore only mode for non + users

Yes, if you go to the preorder page on PSN, they state very clearly you get beta access.

It was good wasn't it? My only problem is that nobody did any dancing! Come on people!

well I finally got my code from amazon...so I'll be posting impressions later on today...Im really anxious to play Destiny...

Got my code and gave it try, it was ok it just got pretty repetitive pretty quick, and kinda boring, but we'll see when the full game comes out

What I would do to get everything the hunter has but with the grenade of a warlock. Also wish run was mapped to something else, I don't like it on R3

Really digging what I'v played so far. PvP with my friend is stupid fun and already people are sending mad messages that I'm only good "because of gear". Good times.
Release date can't come soon enough. =(

Right? My favorite part of the free-roam mode: discovering cool new places.
It free roam is so cool just to wander around. The whole time I'm narrating and making up my own story in my head while discovering new stuff. The sense of exploring the unknown is so rare these days.

Played for a few hours, can't shake the feeling that underneath all the interesting ideas and mechanics it's simply a bad game. Love the concept of mixing MMO elements and loot to a multiplayer shooter but found the whole thing tedious, I didn't get any sense of progression or customization over that already available in a more streamlined form with the CoD level system.

I'm hoping it's just the lack of a proper tutorial that did it, felt pretty confused the whole time about the story, what I was supposed to be doing, what the different places are for etc. Took me 2 hours just to find out I could summon a fucking car.

The grottos past that seems to be a high level area me and friends could not venture in. What other neat areas have people found?

There are several areas that can't be accessed due to high-level enemies: a place on the forgotten shore, underneath The Steppes, a place in a type of shopping mall environment in the Rocketyard (though that's closed off now).

The best place in all of Old Russia? Beyond the Wall, where all those abandoned cars are.

Just think they need to nerf the health on these tanks. It can take a looooooong time to kill just one.

Considerering one instance you only have five mintutes to kill it on a timer, and it has enemy spawn help with it, definitely.

Although, there was one mission on Earth, forget the name of it where you fight off three waves of enemies, then fight a major boss in tight quarters. It was really crazy how many horsdes of enemies rushes you as you tried to take it down as it hovers over you. My friend and I with an unknown third person took it down. We felt like we really earned the win, and it was a rush after all of the frustration.

I did the Level 6 devil mission, Was awesome, All 3 of us knew what we were doing, And to be fair it was a decent mission aswell, Then went back to base and seen loads of people, Im new to this MMO type game, But what i like is i also went off did my own thing, Seen a stranger, Killed some fallen, Danced together then went our own way.

Amazing game. Honestly if I were to compare it to anything it wouldn't be borderlands, it would be guild wars, both in overall world system and general loot structure. Which is awesome, because there were a lot of fresh mmo concepts in that.

As one would expect in an alpha, there's definitely a lot of balancing to be done. But they've nailed the feel, the world is just beautiful, the systems already engaging, and the combat got my pulse up almost at the very first encounter.

Love ya, Bungie.

That's what I was worried about with this game, sounds like I might not enjoy it at all. :(

Thanks for all the impressions Alpha people, I'd be with you but I don't have a PS4.

Is there any gear in the alpha that can get the Warlock's cool down time low? Everything I've found has been tiny at best. Class will be fun as hell once you can use space magic all the time.

There is a different double jump for Warlock eventually, right? Not a fan of the glide.
