Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Some things in PvP are really annoying me:
-Spawning with a shotgun does not work. Maybe it can kinda work in games with near instant kill-times, but not in this game.
-Getting into a fight with an enemy only for him to pull some super charge ability out of his ass and kill you instantly is not fun.
-The tank vehicle thingy is incredibly overpowered.

Especially the first two things are really disappointing to see in a Bungie game.

I played one match and that was enough for me. Oh well, I'm in it for the co-op, not PvP.

Yes because that is explore mission. Its pretty much freeroam with a small sample of things to do. You quit when you are ready. Its not a story mission.

EDIT: That free roaming mission is great for discovering more places or getting encrypted engrams and new stuff. Also good for leveling up guns.

You can level up guns!?

I am not understanding how it works with other players. Yesterday me and two friends were doing the strike, and we saw random people with Blue names off in the distance. SO apparently its not instanced for each group?

It is, but like with the rest of the world the strike has also parts that are more of a MMO section and parts (when you enter the building) that are instanced for your Group.
So the strike feels more like a part of the world and not like a closed instance.

Nope. Higher level power.

Yup. Some guns have full skill trees!

Thats amazing! I really do enjoy this game, well, this alpha. Cant wait to sink an embarrassing amount of time into the real thing

So how's the game so far guys? I hope this is successful for Bungie.

I only played it for like 30 mins to an hour, but the moment to moment gameplay feels good. Just like Halo did with its moment to moment stuff. Now, I have encountered random groups of people while I was soloing the story mission. Thats a little worrisim to me, I'm a very single player focused gamer, but like I said the gameplay is awesome

I'm actually loving this game. Can someone explain how come I sometimes see some people when I go to an area then they disappear after playing around with them for a bit? Also when I go to the last city, most of the time there are no people?

Can't stress how great an idea this Alpha was. Went from negative interest to pretty much a day 1 purchase. I hope we get more of these in the future from other titles.

Did Devil's Lair at level 6 for the first time with a level 7 guy and a level 4 guy... took around 2 hours to fully complete. Mentally exhausted, but it was really fun. None of us used mics and the gradual build up of teamwork was really exciting and fun. The waves of enemies on the second part were the hardest part, I think, but we eventually devised a strategy to retreat to the bunker part so we'd always be close to revive. Really, really enjoying my alpha time.

Just had a similar experience with two other guys and no mic! Can't remember what levels they were but I ws a level 6.

Haha! same.

I am about to jump back into Devil's lair but with upgraded weapons.

Go to Orbit, select Earth and it is listed as one Of three destinations on the planet.

Wait so are there only three earth missions to do? I did the one story mission, did about an hour of exploration, and did a Strike. Besides hitting up the crucible, is that all there is to it after you hit level 8? I might be missing a way to get more missions though.

You can do pvp and legendary versions of the missions. Or roll a new character and try another class

Hey Lars! I know you are a multiplayer designer, but here's some feedback for the game in general:

It'd be more fun if you got to open up a super chest at the end of the strike rather than have it just display the rewards in the post game screen. As is, it's a little anti-climatic and I don't think the rewards have been particularly great, especially for Legend. A 50 attack power pulse rifle isn't exactly what I would call "fat loots".

I don't think a level 3 Fallen Dregg should give the same amount of experience as a level 11 one. At the moment they both give 30 experience, regardless of level. This extends to all types/species.

More hit feedback on hits would definitely be appreciated also, specifically for multiplayer. I absolutely adore the wispy headshot effect for the Fallen, as well as the disintegration of the Hive. Just makes gunplay more satisfying overall - I dunno if you guys are trying to avoid blood for a T rating, but it could use something like that. Maybe a shield or spark effect as an alternate for competitive.

Really loving all of these ideas. The super chest idea would certainly be a nice touch.
Would like to see some more colours used when you en one as well, perhaps depending on the goods inside, so it isn't always the same blue shine.

There seem to be infinite missions, but only the two story ones. Touching the beacons grants you constant new missions.

Me too. I hate the vehicles. How do you work around them? With the limited heavy ammo restrictions, no hijack, and quick health I have no idea what the counter move is supposed to me.

The turrets make short work of them, as well as other vehicles themselves of course. It's far easier to take out the pilot than blow up the machine directly.

Do we have a comprehensive list of all areas we can get to in Old Russia?

Also, regarding levelling up skills past level 8, How do they increase? With the XP you gain or something else?

I just did the Strike mission with 2 random level 8 guys. We destroyed it. We beat the "bullet sponge" walker in like 6 minutes.

It seems like when people have some gear and they know how to use their specials and heavy weapons, these bosses aren't quite so bad.
Yeah I reached lvl8 yesterday and found a machine gun that does 96 attack, and we took it down in about 8 minutes, with me doing most of the damage. I used a heavy machine gun and fusion rifle that both do 96 attack and a full auto rifle that like 83 or 86 attack.

I'd also recommend people use the crpytograph to buy those green encrypted weapons and armor. I think my fusion rifle and machine gun are both from there, along with an uncommon chroma wave body armor. That dude is probably the best equipment outfitter in the game, though it's hit or miss. I'm at the point where I'm not doing anything else with the money. Pimped everything out that I could, so I'm cool with rolling the dice and dumping glimmer on a gamble. PEACE.

So what do the class specific items do? And how do I know if one I find is better than the one I have equipped?

Only played as a Warlock so far, but I have been playing for a while past level 8 now and still have no idea what they do.
