Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Anyone else experience some problems with the netcode in pvp? Sometimes during peak times of the night my ping is in the ~60s and I swear my shots do zero damage sometimes but my opponents can pick me off instantly.

I definitely experienced some lag/rubberbanding and a few kill trades.

PVP was fun, but I'll probably only play with Gaffers, assuming they can handle my mediocrity.

Well alas another time with the game has ended for me. Damn work in the morning. Without a doubt you can see the progress from previous build. I really can't wait to see the beta. At least now though we have plenty to talk about to pass the time between this alpha to the beta.

Just for curiosity sake, what changed from pre-alpha?

*cough* Transistor *cough*

Destiny might beat this out, but I'll wait until I finish the retail game to rescind my decision

I liked Transistor and Child of Light, but there really isn't much comparison to the scope of Destiny.

Got a rare special weapon, damn...
Can't wait for Beta : )

Guys, do you think we'll have epic items? Something between rare and legendary. I hope so.

Probably, but to be fair it doesn't exactly have much competition.

Haha it really doesn't. Maybe if Evolve hits and is really solid it could make it's way into the conversation but I really don't see anything that will top this game in terms of sheer quality, content, and new ideas. (well, repurposed ideas into one cohesive package)

Does PVP normalize stats for balance? I wonder if I join pvp as a lower level, am I comparable to level 8s.

The attack rating of your weapons and the defense rating of your armor are normalized, but higher level gear have abilities (throw grenades farther, melee hits reduce super cooldown, etc) or stat boosters (+12 discipline) which I am 99% sure carry over, so higher level players have an advantage there. The other stats of a weapon (not the attack rating number, but impact/stability/range/reload and rounds per minute/magazine size/damage type) also carry over.

So, all auto rifles do X damage, but a level 12 auto rifle might have a good scope and fire damage, and a level 5 auto rifle might not have any of those things.

I think Destiny is running off a lot of competition. They basically have September all to themselves, and it should dominate holiday sales as word of mouth spreads.

Weird as it sounds, I can't wait to see the spectacle that will be the marketing blitz for this game.

Everyone seems to use that grime texture from videocopilot in games/movies.

If I don't get shot, why shouldn't I kill it?

Bungie is borrowing a lot of MMO elements for this game, and grinding up to get good gear is one of them. Common/uncommon/rare/epic loot is in this game for a reason.

I know games like Dark Souls allow you to do level 1 runs and the combat is much more skill based. Not saying your opinion is wrong, but Bungie isn't designing their game in the same way.

Apologies is this has been asked and answered, but do we know exactly what time the Alpha ends? Or has it ended. I can't play right now but would like to get in at least a couple more matches tonight before going to bed.

I liked Transistor and Child of Light, but there really isn't much comparison to the scope of Destiny.

The lighting improved a ton. Particle effects and such improved. The snow for example was more pronounced and noticeable. There were graphical bugs. For example you heard the splash of the water puddles in the tower but you couldn't see the water. Just overall everything was amped up from pre-alpha to alpha. The loading between zones for example is seamless now where as then there was noticeable chugging when hitting a zone change. It would chug a lot like Halo did at times changing zones.

The big changes though were that pre-alpha you had access to both talent trees in each class. The old E3 demo location was closed off. There was a wall over the doorway to the chamber. Then you could also explore further up into the building in rocket yard that the fallen spawn in front of up in the corner. The Walker tanks were bugged also and you could pretty much solo then in minute maybe two tops. The final boss fight of the strike would teleport into the floor of the stairs and other spots like that. There also wasn't the campaign mission or Crucible. So all you had was explore and the strike. But just overall it was what you would expect it was an earlier build of the alpha here but not as complete.

Hell the same thing will happen with beta too no doubt. It's just natural that with each new build the game improves.

What a great weekend this was to be a PS4 owner. I was pretty excited for this game and already had itpreordered on PSN, but now I am ten times more hyped for the final game. This game is going to be huge this fall.

I just finished the strike mission on legend and we kicked its ass. Three randoms and we were all on our A game.

feels so good.

holy shit.

I remember that walker used to kick me ass.

Amazing what happens to a bullet sponge when you have three people that know what they are doing and using an effective strategy. Really hope they do not nerf these encounters. I am cry if I walk in there and it takes 2 minutes.

Right, I'm just saying I prefer the Dark Souls way. What's the advantage to the way Bungie is doing it? All I can think of is that Bungie can get away with dumber enemy encounters -- if the enemies' strategies were strong enough, it would be as feasible for a low level player to exploit a high level enemy encounter.

It works for Dark Souls because the combat is so strong.

It was already confirmed that this isn't going to carry over.

Not talking Alpha -> Beta I'm talking Beta -> Release

How long is the beta? I saw someone say 3 months and if that's true, it's pretty insane to have people invest that much time just to get wiped.

In the latest trailer we see player shooting a lvl 25 enemy and the number is white which lead me to believe the player itself was probably between lvl 24 and 26.

Guess they changed the cap from 20 to 50. Good bungie good. I will be ready to test in the open beta.

Beta will not be 3 months. Content will not carry over either. Very very very rarely will you ever see content carry over from an incomplete build to a retail build. It's just how it is.

Has Bungie revealed the max. level in the game?
I hope they add more RPG aspects, the tower is a bit boring even if its populated because none of the AI characters are interesting at all in the alpha.

After playing for ages over the past few day, I got a mission on part of the map I never went to before. Did it, then walked though loads of tunnels and found loads of rusted cars.

I never knew this was here! I wsh I had played more of the Alpha :/

Yup. See a lot of people don't realize that with good teamwork and being properly geared those fights don't last long. Take the walker. How many people have realized that you can shoot the launcher off the side of the turret? You can and that reduces it's ability to fuck you up. Then how many realize if you focus on the legs you can cause them to become damaged and the head to pop out exposing a weak point that you can do huge damage? Yup you can. So with a good team he goes down fast.

Then the final boss. He's not the real boss of the level. It's the waves of enemies. The secret to burning him down quick is cleaning up the waves. Then that allows you to focus on him and burn him down quick. It's amazing how many I see focus on him and ignore the mobs hence die a ton. It just slows you down to ignore them.

It's 20 from what others have said on here apparently
