Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I know it is going to be tough, but I think I'm going to skip the beta - I've seen enough to know this will be day 1 purchase.

Like a lot of others are saying, I wasn't really sold on the game until the Alpha. I got all 3 characters to level 8 and had a blast doing so even though I did the same content over and over again. I didn't even touch the multiplayer yet. Day 1 for me.

So what is the maximum number of players that can be roaming around shooting dudes co-operatively? I had 5 at one point, thought it was only 4.

You can have a maximum of 6 people in your fireteam (party) but I'm not sure of the maximum in your game running around, I had nearly 20 people in my game at one point.

If you go to the Coast, there's a chance that a group of enemies spawn riding Pikes (They're similar to Ghosts from Halo). You can kill the driver and ride that around killing anything in your way.

I think I need to skip the beta, as much as I really want to play it. It is probably going to be about the same thing, and I want to keep myself from being burnt out. I don't know. I really like this game, it really sold itself in this alpha.

I don't know what to do.

I just wanted to add that I hope more people get microphones to use when playing. My most fun was when I had conversations with other gamers about what was going on. Coordinating strikes....laughing about dieing in mutiplayer...

Thanks Bungie. You're about to get me hooked into online gaming again.

Do you have to be in a party to be able to communicate?

My brother and I spent about 45 minutes last night trying to kill a ?? enemy, we found a posse of hive thralls in a hive/cave. Thought because of their super high level we'd get some good exp at least, right? Nah, 22 exp and 3 glimmer. For almost an hour of shooting, dying, shooting, dying. Lol. Some dev must be chuckling at how worthless the conquest was.

Watched a few vids and this game looks really fun. Is it like halo where the multiplayer is what keeps people playing, or are you supposed to spend a lot of time in single player?

You can use your microphone and anyone in your fire team can hear you; don't need to make a party from the PS4's home screen. Super useful for coordinating attacks against the Devil Walker. "I'm hitting the front left leg... Now front right leg...etc"

The Hive Shrieker is like a level 20, I don't go to that part of the map anymore.

Doesn't make too much a difference, since the walker takes a long ass time to kill even with strategy. It is like 10x harder in the strike than the giant Servitor.

So after playing the Alpha for a good long while, I have to say I'm not impressed. I feel the game exhibits the worst elements of Skyrim thrown together with Borderlands. First let me say that the amount of ground/space in the game would be amazing if it wasn't for the fact that there isn't shit to do there. All you do is wander around and kill/collect things. There are no sidequests or anything of that nature to make it even somewhat appealing. The only reason to explore is for loot, which is easier gained by doing Legendary Strikes anyway. It's a boring timesink where the only claim to fame is the size. The Public Events can help to alleviate that but the core problem still exists. They need better and more elaborate sidequests. What we have right now is the worst kind of MMO-tier quests where you just go and kill so many enemies and come back to collect your reward. This is compounded by the lack of personality the game has. Everything is played very seriously despite the awful writing (which it absolutely is) and when you already have a somewhat boring world, it just makes everything flat. There just isn't any sort of spark or dynamic aspect to such a large part of the game.

There are bullet sponge enemies who really don't provide much of a threat other than taking up your ammo. This is in part due to how bad the AI is. Enemies stand around even on Legendary and the major threat coming from them is their hp and damage output.

We then have the shitty VA work. This is probably the worst aspect of the Alpha and seemingly the game as a whole. Dinklage doesn't give a fuck and neither does that multiplayer announcer. No, Dinklage playing a robot doesn't excuse his crappy performance. There have been tons of AIs who all sound leagues better than the performance he gives here. The MP announcer also isn't exactly putting his best foot forward. As to how Bungie can fix this, I don't know as VA work isn't cheap and the release date is coming up. I don't think a filter is going to be enough unless they really go heavy on it.

All of that said, I thought the visuals and music were for the most part really good. The image quality is really clear and the game does have some gorgeous vistas. I haven't seen enough of the game to say whether the artstyle is great but it's not lacking so far. I also thought the game for the most part controlled fairly well although at times it felt like the game has some input lag.

The core game still is very boring.

Can't wait to bless the Destiny world with my bad swenglish!

Coordinating attacks and with decent guns, it goes down in 5 minutes. That's not very long at all.

I went in with nothing good. I figured I would try it. Haven't had the most strategic attacks, but we tried the first time. I've only done it 3 times, and I crashed 2 of them. Just seemed to take a while.

It was tough for me the first time, but after finding good guns and teaming up with other GAFfers (my first team were randoms who kept dying a lot), it was a lot easier. Learning where the really safe spots in the map are (you can shoot from atop a building and never get hit when standing behind some pipes) guaranteed easy victories. and 3 people attacking one leg made the walker reveal its weak spot much faster.

I can tell you only put in like 5 min into the game.

so alpha folks, haven't been paying attention to this game much until gb did the QL of the alpha.

a few questions:

- is the skill tree stuff just a side thing, like you can spec towards skill use in borderlands but gun play is still priority in terms of gameplay/dps? Is there a resource with skill trees i can read up on (from the alpha so far)?

- how is group play? Are there support builds? Is there a tank/healer/dps triangle or just anyone can do w/e?

- Is 3rd person in missions only during power use and vehicles?

I decided to do some exploring to end the ALPHA and found the Devil Walker from the strike mission.

Solo??

YES! I followed the advice of the dude on here that said you could shoot off the canons. That made it super easy. I felt like a seasoned bad ass.

GAME IS GOD TIER.

See I was afraid to ask if GAFfers wanted to play with me, just because I am sort of new here and I don't have any kind of reputation or know anyone. I thought about it, but never really asked. It would have changed a lot. I'm not bad or anything, but playing with Randoms was terrible. I should ask GAF more I guess.

I loved the crap out of this Alpha. I ended up getting all three classes to level 8.

I did feel that some parts of the Alpha ended up feeling a little repetitive but I'm guessing that has more to do with the small slice we got to play than anything design related.

I'm looking forward to the Beta...

where do i turn in spin metal at? heard it was a good way to xp up

There's a vendor in the Hangar Bay, before the ship merchant, the option to turn in the spin is down at the bottom of the list.

I'm so sad that this is it until July. It feels like letting a beautiful world get blown into dust.

I really hope they implement the big changes people are asking for.

one of the crucible guys. there's also a guy (vanguard?) in one of the towers that'll take em. whichever you choose is who you get rep for. I gave crucible 2 bundles before finding the other guy and was pissed -- crucible gear is lvl 20 but the other guy has stuff you'd be able to use.

Skill trees look complex and from what i have been reading you can keep building skills after you hit level cap. The skill themselves are incredibly useful - you unlock your super ability and are able to customise your abilities as well choosing between for example a grenade that does damage to people standing in the area it exploded in after the initial explosion or have the grenade explode like a cluster grenade for area of effect damage.

In short - yes while gunplay is where most of your damage comes from, your skills enhance your special abilities and add to your base stats.

Group play is fantastic in the strike and competitive multiplayer. The PVE strikes feel like a FPS MMO instance that is challenging but satisfying. There is no holy trinity in this game (tank/heals/dps - just dps) but if someone goes down you can revive them and you and them gain a temporary shield for your trouble, however if all three people in the strike go down with no revives in a boss fight it resets and you start again.

3rd person is only present when emoting, vehicles and activating your super ability.

How do I get to where the bunches of rusted cars are from the old demo reel?

if I remember correctly you go to the courtyard area where the devil walker public event spawns. Then you head to the door on the wall to the right (as you enter ) the door is over by the tanks. you should enter a huge pipe thing and see the spinning fan from the demo. Keep going.

that entire section is truly haunting and beautiful.

I hope I am remembering correct.

anyone else?

I think this is a very good criticism of the game. The fetch side quests are pretty bad (I once got the exact fetch quest twice in a row; the only difference was it was given out by a different faction/person), and I don't like the bullet sponginess of the Devil Walker on Legend. But I'm hopeful that side quests will have more variety in the main game. The Alpha has been out for 4 days, and we've only had 2 missions, Exploration with side quests, and PVP multiplayer. I'm sure a lot of people are bored doing the same few things over and over. But I'm pretty positive the full game will have a lot more interesting things to do.

In spite of all the negatives, though, I am having a lot of fun with the game. I can understand if people got turned off by the alpha, but I'll be playing Destiny on Day 1.

Ugh I've been driving all over and don't quite see the spot that looks like the E3 car area and I'm hoping to find it before the Alpha ends

Thanks. Hope I see it.

How do I get to where the bunches of rusted cars are from the old demo reel?

1) When you start in Explore mode, go to your immediate right all the way down to the wall where the enemies spawn
2) Right above them is an area where you can jump up into the building and head through the corridors, keep going until you come out at The Divide
3) Head to the right right along that river until you get to the wall then go along the wall until you get to an opening you can enter through.
4) Go into the opening into the building and head through the corridors until you get to the car area (Cosmodrome)

Sorry if this is hard to follow, the maps have so many nooks & crannies haha
