Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 9: F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5

Eggrobo's a cute addition, I dig its design.

Odd, we touched on the subject last week.

It's funny, I was in several Smash threads last week, but very rarely in the main one. The Invitational, the character reveals', the Gamecube controller one...OT 8 was practically growing a new page by the second. Should have been here, I reckon. Bet it was a beast of an irreplaceable kind.

NOA is fucking incompetent.

Neatly summarized. It sucks, but suppose I'll live.

But for the love of GAF's servers, they damn better not announce Smash Wii U for Q4 2014 in Japan and Q1 2015 elsewhere.

I actually played Lucas so I'll be bummed if he doesn't make it.
Would you be open to him coming back but with a radically different moveset to better distinguish him from Ness? I can't help but wonder if those similarities were the point of contention (assuming the leaker is correct).

When it comes to vets, Mr. G&W is to me what Snake is to you.

It feels like a terrible tease being shown him and then not seeing him on the website.

I can understand that, but I just don't see any reason to worry. I don't see any way he's possibly missing the boat after that. Not that there was much doubt.

If Snake made a cameo I'd be super pleased. I mean, there's no way he's not in at that point. Feel the same about G&W.

I think Smash Wii U is safe because they need to get in before Black Friday.

Smash 3DS is probably because they hate selling games in the summer, so they're sacrificing Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2 to Smash.

Yeah, that's true...

Scuttling around as Mr. G&W is one of gaming's great pleasures.

His moveset already distinguished him plenty from Ness, though.

I never felt Lucas was that similar. His normals are pretty different (I greatly preferred his Up-Smash to Ness') and I always felt like I could control him better than Ness.

Leak #3 came right before E3 2014. It reaffirmed Pac-Man and Mii, and included the name Mii Fighters, which turned out to be true. And it once again said that Palutena, Shulk, Chrom and Chorus Men were coming. And that Lucas might be cut.
Alright, this is what's bugging me.

I'm sure Lucas will be revelead as a DLC character right after the announcement of Mother 3's western release. Believe.
:(

People who still do the "lol Lucas is a clone thing" are either going off of art style/character design similarities that the Earthbound/Mother series uses, legit trolls, or people who think that similar looking/functioning special moves (neglecting their properties) are enough to make someone a clone.

Yeah, I definitely noted that Lucas is more "fluid." Never dug into him deep enough to figure out why, though. :-)

I'm just a dude who likes videogames and my fellow gamers, so I guess I lack the business credentials to know, but from my laymen perspective I don't understand avoiding summer releases when an entire demographic (school-age kids) are off for the summer and free to indulge in this hobby of ours.

Plus, October is packed as fuck

I actually wouldn't be surprised to see Smash Wii U launch later in Japan than in the West, like Black Friday for NA, then early December for Japan. The same thing happened with Mario 3D World last year, and to a greater extent, ALBW.

I'll repeat: Nintendo of America is fucking incompetent.

They believe they are competing with Destiny but never even conceive of the idea that they are competing with themselves. So they'll release four (!) games between the last week of September and the first week of November that will all cannibalize each other in sales. Bayonetta 2 is going to take the hardest hit, I think.

Snake is my favorite character ever and Metal Gear Solid my favorite game of all time. But I wouldn't mind if he's not in Smash Bros. I never saw him as a Nintendo character and to me he seems out of place. Mind you, I have never really played Brawl. :)

Yeah, I feel really bad for Bayonetta 2. :-\

I agree with you, but to try and get inside NOA's head for a moment, maybe they think that a crush of varied titles during the fall will result in momentum heading into Black Friday? Eh.

Summer draught isn't limited to Nintendo. The idea is that everyone is on holiday so they're unlikely to be buying things when they are off enjoying themselves/spending their disposable income on said holiday.

Seriously, guys:

A PotD of Snake, Pac-Man, Mega Man and Sonic.

Caption: "All of the guests have arrived!"

It's too perfect.

Y'know something I thought about? Mega Man was revealed at E3 2013, Sonic was revealed later that year in October, Pac-Man was revealed at E3 2014, if Snake is in it would make the most sense for him to be reveled later this year in October to coincide with the release of the 3DS version of Smash 4. I don't know why people thought E3 was his only chance, it's not like Sonic was revealed at then.

In general, I don't get why there isn't more targeted releases based around the summer months with an audience hungry as fuck for something new and with a lot of time to kill.

But in all honesty, I'll just divert back to Alberto's post on the matter. NoA is really fucking nutty sometimes.

I don't think they understand how their target audience likes to spend their free time, lol

I hope Sakurai confirms Mr. G&W soon. It should be a given that he'll be the next veteran after he appeared in Pac Man's trailer.

I also love how Pac Man gives a thumb up when he is revealed in that trailer, it almost seems like he's saying "Don't worry, they didn't pick one of my shitty new designs!".

Mega Man at E3, Sonic in October, Pac-Man at E3, Snake in October...

That would be nicely symmetrical

They're making the assumption, for whatever reason, that no one will want to pick up all four games and thus they are not competing with themselves for those dollars. Which is going to really fuck over people who want to pick up all four or even two or three of those games and can't afford to, encouraging them to prioritize.

So people are going to go, well, I am iffy on Warriors titles so maybe I'll skip this game. Or Bayonetta 1 got cheap fast, so I'll wait on Bayonetta 2. Or I've never heard of Fantasy Life, so I can pass on this. Or Smash Bros. Wii U comes out in a few weeks and the roster already leaked from Japan, so I can wait.

It's a strategy that encourages skipping games rather than trying them out and it's dumb as hell.

Vacation+various outdoor activities. At least in Europe.

A Sonic stage where Robotnik periodically showed up in his egg mobile would be cool. He could start swinging a pendulum around and stuff.

Us Americans love to travel, as well, but it's rare to be gone all summer, and even then, you'd probably bring a portable while traveling (in which case SSB 3DS would've been perfect for a real summer release).

Yeah, it sounds risky. Maybe there'll be some sort of incentive deal or cross-promotion that will encourage people to pick up multiple titles, but either way they're making this needlessly complicated for themselves.

Either that or they're people who got into the series yesterday and haven't figured out that tilts exist yet (this was me once)

If Snake is in and Ridley isn't, there's no justice in this world.

I'm not even a Ridley fan but I would have much preferred him in than Charizard. I'd imagine he'd function very similar to Charizard, move wise, which would be super fun. Nothing against the old fire type, I just feel like he's better served with the Pokemon trainer. Also, I really like Red. =/

The greatest injustice will be the lack of Mewtwo. I'm just happy Greninja will be there to console me.

I just read mii's cant be used online against anyone... What gives? You can in MK8, I dont get it.

I imagine it's more about their movesets being totally customizable than anything else.
Actually, wasn't it said at the roundtable that it's to avoid bullying and insensitive imagery? Maybe I'm imagining things...

Basically, they want to avoid people ganging up on the black Mii, or the Prophet Muhammad leaping into battle, etc. Stuff that would upset people and create controversy.

I guess it could also be their way to solve the Gordian knot of balancing a character with 36 specials.

Smash is out in September though. I think his best chance is a Direct in August. And I don't think it's that far-fetched at all.
I keep forgetting Japan gets the game early.

I think that's what they say, but I imagine it's a happy coincidence for them.

There's no single base Mii fighter. Considering he's banning all the customizable options for every other character, there's no way to fit the Mii in.
I was about to say that's a rather astute observation, but (and not to take that away from you!) they could conceivably balance a "default" set for each type of Mii.

I mean, Palutena also has 12 completely distinct specials, but you'll still be able to use her with her balanced default set.

Because of this, I'm inclined to believe it really is a bullying concern.
