Official Destiny Alpha Withdrawal Thread

I would waste all my ammo just shooting Joffrey[/strike} Ghost and die to a Hive Thrall if this was the case.

Joffrey Ghost would have been so much more entertaining.

When I started playing FFXIV today to get over the loss, I kept pressing in the L stick, expecting my Lalafell to run faster... until I realized it's the wrong game.

The wait until July 17 will be brutal. I hope beta lasts until game release. (Fat chance)

So many aspects of this game scream Halo. Especially the enemy design and movement capabilities of your character are basically begging you to play this game like Halo. You are even more agile than you are in Halo and yet the game punishes you for utilizing this. I get the entire slow/accurate vs fast/inaccurate thing, but I feel like this game doesn't need that at all. It would be so much more interesting to play if you could be both fast and accurate in my opinion.

Yep. The game really feels like Halo, at least to me. ADS isn't necessary.

I'm having withdrawals so badly. Halo Reach had campaign co-op matchmaking... any chances I could get a Legendary match up in that I wonder? I seem to remember that even in Reach's prime, there were only a few hundred people at a time doing campaign matchmaking. Although Reach's campaign and firefight netcode was pretty crap (input lag). I gotta find something to scratch the itch... *sigh*

Oh come on! Its not being "gimped". When you have the two within the same game, thats just how it is. When a game does not have a sprinting mechanic (original halos) and suddenly gets them (later halos) you don't say walking got gimped because running was introduced. For all we know the hip fire accuracy could have been left "normal" and the ADS increased.
Now that you mention it, yes, reducing the base movement speed and adding sprint would be a perfect example of the same kind of non-sensical game design, introducing a solution for a problem that never existed in the first place. Many (me included) felt that Halo played way better without sprint and with a faster base movement speed. Sprint clashed with the arena shooter nature of the Halo games, especially when added to the reduced base movement speed. And so did bloom, and a bunch of other terrible design decisions they made in the later Halos, but that's been discussed plenty of times already, and I don't want to derail the thread so, back to Destiny...

Again, having both ADS and non-ADS shooting mechanics doesn't mean that the accuracy of non-ADS shooting must be artificially penalized with that awful random vector bullshit. So no, that's not "just how it is" Most shooters nowadays may do it, but it's the definetly not the only way to design a game with ADS, as both Bioshock and Wolfenstein have proved.

Question for everyone; would love to see what GAF chose:

1.) What class did you find most appealing? Why?

2.) What race did you pick? Why?

For me:
1.) Warlock because as much as I enjoyed playing with the Titan, I just didn't like the Titan's powers. Also, I really like the Warlock grenade power. For whatever reason the Hunter didn't click for me, though I did really like the feel of the double-jump.

2.) I went Exo. I love robots and I loved their look. Was difficult to imagine picking anything else. I hope there are some good lore hooks for the different races or some other racial benefits.

For myself:

1) Hunter because I always play light classes in MMOs, played as shadow priest in WoW and Thief in GW2 etc. And that satisfying feeling when that knife throw connects with someone.

2) I went with Human (Male). Always has, always will. I see myself in the eyes of the characters I make. I like to experience the game as my own adventure.

I was thinking of hooking my 360 back up. I never actually played reach!

At about 8:18 in this interview, Deej begins talking about Raid(s). It seems like there is only one raid. I'm assuming it's the vault of glass thing. Also, do not say anything about angry joe; my point has nothing to do with him. The information about raids is all that matters.

Well that's pretty disappointing... for a team of 500 you would think that they could do more than one raid.

Also, is it me or is there new footage of different planets interspersed in there? I don't think I've seen a lot of this...

I'm a big Halo fan and have played all of them, and IMO Reach has the best campaign of them all. The game gets some flak for certain multiplayer mechanics, but overall the game (especially the campaign) was an awesome farewell to the series from Bungie. It's one of the most challenging in the series, without being annoying (no Flood). There's a lot of enemy variety, and the Covenant has never been more menacing than they are in Reach. If you like the other games in the series, definitely give this one a go!

Interesting, there's also a second of what looks to be Crucible gameplay on a Mars map (towards the end of the video). Also, it's pretty crazy that he said the raid will take hours upon hours. Wow, sounds like my type of deal. I like the grind.

I like fine control shot placement with ADS (crits), usually on hipfire with shotguns or in CQC/oh shit moments.

I dont really think removing ADS would be an improvement. The reward for bettering your shooting skills is pretty much more crits. If hipfire was as accurate as ADS the game would be lacking a bit of depth.

What? ADS is intended to make fine aim easier by allowing you to see your target area with greater resolution and slow down your aim response. In and of itself, precise hipfire only eases crits at close range, and even then only because it allows you to rotate quickly enough to track your target (i.e. shoot at all), which is why a lot of people right now are ditching rifles at close range altogether and just going for easy shotgun kills.

If the reward for bettering your shooting skills is more crits, I'm not seeing how precise hipfire causes problems. You'd still fail to get crits if you aim poorly, and get crits if you aim well.

One raid huh? Hopefully there's a ton of strikes. His response to the Xbox exclusive content question was very Mattrick-esque. "We've got something for Xbox owners - it's called Destiny." Not a good look, Bungie. I'm guessing it was forced upon them by Activision though. It should never have included strikes or PVP levels though. That's horrible and I wouldn't blame Xbox loyalists for lifting a middle finger to Bungie and telling them to eff off.

lol

Just saw the footage you were referring to. Every outlet was given access to that. Not sure why Joe was the only one who used it.

See that Guardian fanning the hammer on the hand cannon? So sweet.

Yep, Xenos just posted it on DBO. Nice.

The good news is, because trigger detection is intended to be perceived as binary in most games, it probably won't "get to me" when I play other stuff without such things. Halo 1 was one of the first shooters I ever played, and I've noticed that I'm subtly bothered by other games where the character doesn't correctly decide whether to pump the shotgun after reloading.
Grrr!!! :D

Weird, there's some great footage in there. Kinda neat how Vex's have a weak point in their abdomen rather than their head, switches things up a bit.

Is this from a new build? The UI looks a bit different with the critical notifications.

Definitely looks like an extra level of polish of the visuals in that footage, if the end product matches that I will be very happy, all other aspects of the game are top notch.

You can headshot the Vex. Makes em crazy. Best to go for the juice box, though. Makes em dead.

Not sure about the build. Could be older and newer depending on the shots. Team is moving fast.

Game is fantastic based on the Alpha and looks even better based on that new footage.

Doing great work over there boys and girls.

I took my little sister to GameStop today. She preordered the destiny bundle ps4. I'm so proud. *tear*

She will be the hunter on my fireteam.

You guys are gonna think I'm nuts but...

I think JOFFREY (Jack Gleeson) would have been the PERFECT voice for the "Ghost". That thing needed a more snarky, arrogant "attitude" - not the calm, deadpan one that Peter Dinklage gave it.

(I love Peter - but whoever cast him as "Ghost", wrote that dialogue and directed the whole voice-over thing should be fired)

Bungie used Peter STRICKLY for his star power and nothing else it seems.

Jack's voice-overs, even if as drab as Peter's, would have invoked enough cynicism to make it work better and be taken more seriously as a legit part of the game.

Its strange but Dinklages performance is so much better and works surprisingly well in the on stage demo/gameplay reveals.

I think I'm officially depressed. Had an amazing time playing the game. Took a whole shit ton of pictures but I love these two that I took while a fellow gaffer and I sat at the tower waiting for the Alpha to shut down. Thanks Snoshado for the awesome experience!

Thanks for joining me! I'm glad I didn't sit there all by myself ;) Here are my contributions:

I chose Titan for the flying stomp, but being able to knee the fallen now curtails any doubt I had in choosing another class.

Will I be able to do that in Beta?!?!
I hope

I'm saving the Alpha in hopes that having it unlocks something in the retail release.

They already have our info in terms of who played the alpha and how they progressed; they even still have all of that up on their alpha site. If they do give those who participated in the alpha and/or beta something-- a dye or exclusive emblem perhaps-- they likely have some sort of flag attached to those accounts as you needed to register to gain access to the game. Other games have done similar.

All that to say: given the install sizes of PS4 games, retail in particular, space fills up quickly. You might want to delete the alpha and free it up?

From the AJ interview with Deej:

"If we do our job right, if you want to explore that world beyond what we have given you, if you have questions about the mysteries and lore, we'll be around to tell more of that story. But job number one is to satisfy you, create a distinct beginning, middle and end. Something that can stand on it's own two feet."

"We are very sensitive to the fact that we earn the right to put a number on the box."

Almost makes me want to cry. Love you Bungie....from Marathon until now. Bless all of you.

Destiny is why I bought a next generation console.

That's not hyperbole. It's fact.

Yes, I'm going to get The Last of Us, CounterSpy, Madden and NBA 2k15 this year for my PS4, but if there were no Destiny I'd still have my PS3 and I'd play that until it blew up.

I'm getting up there in years and free time to game is going to be less than it's ever been. I was hoping to find one game that would be my mainstay. The one game which would scratch multiple itches (mmo, shooter, social, rpg single player) and last me for a long time.

I already know Destiny is going to be that title that will always be on my PS4 hard drive.

Good job Bungie. You got my $$$$.

I believe Bungie has sold me too much on Destiny that it will be the first game I preload and buy online. I don't care about physical copy like I used to with the other games, I need to be online as soon as the Servers come up in September!
