Are you even having fun with gaming?

This is the exact reason I keep Nintendo products in my life. First party Nintendo games are some of the most enjoyable electronic experiences that you will ever have. Do I care that they don't have all the M rated games on their console? No way! I have my X1/360/PS3 for that. Also, even my non-gaming girlfriend loves Nintendo properties, so anything in which I can game with her is A-OK in my books. Nintendo is where I get my weekly shot of fun, plain and simple.

Of course. No Man's Sky looks like a huge space sandbox to me. I'm sure that'll bring me great fun, liking space as I do.

Not really. I mostly just complain about them.

I haven't enjoyed playing a video game in a fair while.

But I'm always optimistic for the future.

I feel this way. I believe that there will be a time when something really compels me to play it, that just isn't happening at the moment. I have no interest in competitive gamaing, and I'm really just waiting for some new, decent RPGs to come to next gen consoles/PC. Until then, I just talk about games and little more.

You'd think coming home after work and playing a game would be always nice, but usually work makes me too tired to even look at a list of games to single out on.

This as well. My roommate will come home from work and spend his whole night playing a game, while I usually am too tired/frustrated to even open something up. I just want to watch movies and go to bed.

Yes I am. I mostly play older or indie games with a couple AAAs thrown in and have fun with all of them.

If I hit a slump and get bored of gaming, I take a break for a few days and enjoy it again when I come back.

I play retro games mostly and Nintendo so I have tons of fun. I don't get why gamers get so caught up in new technology. New technology if it makes games more fun or compelling is a good thing but new tech for the sake of new tech is pointless.

I wonder the same thing sometimes, but I just take breaks and do other things.

Really at this point in my life, I have more games to play than I ever did as a kid (I owned 4 N64 games throughout its lifetime). With steam sales and PS+, I have more games than I'll ever have time to play. Sometimes it's more anxiety over "should I still be spending this much time gaming" rather than true boredom.

Something I've been thinking about the past few years. I saw this today.

"turbulent weather rolls in, skies thickening before bursting onto the roads. Crowds at the side of the track reach for their macs and umbrellas, winds tug at the trackside scenery while puddles form in the divots and dips of the road surface,"

"The heat from the sun dynamically melts the snow, with northern-facing surfaces reacting first."

and ppl seem to be losing their shit. Then there's No Sky Man game i checked out and ppl are going nuts for it, yet no one really knows how it plays. I was at a side chicks house last weekend and invited my boy over to cotch. He brought his PS4 and was eager to show me games like infamous and killzone. He was taking close ups of walls n shit and showing me excitedly.

But all this shit, at the end of the day just seems like people are playing games (GAF and enthusiasts) to be impressed on a technical/art level than having fun.

Take a step back for a min n really see if you're having fun with the games u play.

WON'T SOMEBODY PLZ THINK ABOUT THE PPL

I still enjoy playing games. I just have grown more cynical so games I'd give a passing score to as a kid are no longer in my cone of view

I've always had a blast playing games since I first picked up an Atari 2600 Joystick.

I'm probably having even more fun gaming now due to their being a new crop of local co-op games that I can rope my friends into playing that are simple to pick up but hard to put down. Fun games to play with friends when they come over and then when I'm alone, my meaty single player games where I can tune everything else out and just immerse myself in it. It's great.

And the rise of smaller independent game studios has been, to me, the absolute best thing to come along in gaming in a long time. So much variety out there.

When playing a game feels like a chore, I'm usually done with it. Fun is a requirement. I tend to play a single game at a time so I go weeks enjoying a game till I'm done then move on to the next one. Current fun ones for me include the infamous games, NBA2K, Dragon's Dogma, Demons Souls and GT5. I just enjoy playing them for the hell of it.

Not as much fun as when I was younger, but still having fun. You'd think coming home after work and playing a game would be always nice, but usually work makes me too tired to even look at a list of games to single out on.

I think gaming has been in "been there, seen that" mode for awhile, compared to 16-bit/32-bit/PC days where everything felt new and innovative. That being said, I don't think I'll ever stop playing video games.

Your friend showing you close up of walls and that is probably more because of it being a brand new system with new capabilitys, the honey moon period will wear off eventually and people will focus less on the new gen graphics.

No :(

I don't have time for games anymore, and when I do my attention span is ultra short. The last game I finished was TLoU. I feel old!

Great graphics add so much to the game for me including make it fun and enjoyable.

I don't understand how one can argue that we are enjoying games technically (graphics/art) without having fun. Must they be exclusive?
I think NOT.

I have fun playing older games, not so much when playing newer ones.
Most of the newer ones get tiring after after a few hours like Watch_Dogs, Tomb Raider, and Borderlands 2.

I think I should focus on building up a third-gen to sixth-gen library.

Yes I do. However, I do have times where I just don't feel like playing anything, so I don't. I never really force myself to play games.

And as far as something like No Man's Sky goes, many people are excited about it because of its scope and how open-ended it seems. I mean it could end up being massively disappointing in the end, but I don't think it's hard to see why people are excited now (including me).

It's my life. I work to pay bills and buy games. Nothing is better than spending a weekend living in the world of a great game. Fallout, Portal, Uncharted, Demons Souls, I can spend hours living in their world and leaving my crappy one behind.

This sounds kinda depressing tbh... especially that last part.

:(

of course, i have no problem trying out games for a little bit and dropping them as soon as i'm not having fun

the new gen also seems exciting to me for the first time since i was much younger. i felt like i didn't pay attention to games much through college til my mid-20s but now i'm really enjoying games again.

Great op. Unfortunately "having fun playing games" is something gaf has little to no interest in.

I don't know who the hell this "gaf" is, but personally it's the only reason I game, and I love it.

Sure I might be here or elsewhere (complaining quite often) more than actually gaming, but that's because I enjoy both. I enjoy arguing, I enjoy being critical of things that I feel deserve it, and I enjoy playing fun games.

I think if you are not having fun gaming, you should probably not game. Unless it's just because of the lack of fun games of course. Then you should wait for something fun to come along and enjoy it. Gaming should be a hobby for fun imo. Don't do it if you don't like it.

Playing an oldie and a newish game at the moment.

Medal of Honor Allied Assault is pretty fun, even with such little substance and story line.

The Last of Us is radically different. The stealth and combat feel like chores and almost entirely drained of fum after failing the second time.

Games are still fun for me, but stressful games like TLOU is pretty unfun, but is still really interesting and the story is what keeps me playing.

Well as I grow older, I'm not really having as much fun as I had when I was younger. Still, some games still entertain me a lot. Mainly MP games.

Some games I play for fun (right now, Capsized) and some games I play to make myself mad (right now, Battlefield 4).

I'm always having fun playing games. Right now I'm juggling Brawl, Pokemon X, MK8 and SM3DW. In fact, I played a shit ton of Brawl and MK8 this past weekend with my best buds and it was incredible.

I really only enjoy first-party Nintendo games and some indie games these days.
Massive, "cinematic", 40-hour Ubisoft-style AAA type games don't interest me at all (TLOU being a notable exception).

I too am pretty unimpressed by No Man's Sky. I feel I've already seen and digested what's special about that game through trailers and I'm also not a fan of randomly generated content.

I am having a ton of fun playing with my kids. It's amazing to watch their reactions. Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World and Game and Wario have all been so much fun to play with a bunch of friends and family.

Staying on topic, I wouldn't check out a game solely on looks and tech marvel. Even if uncharted didn't look as crazy as it did in that trailer I would still check it out. As long as it looks doable

I find I only do this if at a friend's house. The only reason I've played some of Infamous: Second Son is because of that. There's no way I'd have bought that to try it out.

I've been gaming since about 1982, yes, I'm still having fun.

This whole "are you enjoying games or is it just about the tech?" shit comes up every gen.

That is how I would describe TLOU, draining.

It's no mystery why games are such a great form of escapism. Nothing like being super stressed out over something and then letting yourself get lost into a game world and all the things stressing you out leave your mind.

Great op. Unfortunately "having fun playing games" is something gaf has little to no interest in.

There's plenty of threads and OTs where you can find people talking about games and enjoying them. You just have to know where to look and what suits your tastes. You have your positive Gaffers just like you have your critical Gaffers. I know I have a habit of having the "glass half full" attitude about gaming, I am very easy to please when it comes to video games so enjoying myself is hardly an issue.

Yep!

The important thing to remember is not to be stuck to buying everything you want the day it comes out.

And play through the games you buy.

I'm playing through Assassin's Creed 4 right now and its so good. I love sailing and exploring. I finished wolfenstein before that on hard and had a blast. before that I went through call of duty ghosts on veteran again and I still kind of like that game for some strange reason.

I want to get back to playing Demons Souls as that was what I was actually spending my time on before Wolfenstein came out.

Why is being impressed with technical aspects of a game exclusive to "fun"? Just because it isn't "fun" to one person doesn't mean it isn't an enjoyable activity. Some people collect stamps, or work on old cars, or browse Internet forums.

I had to google "cotch". I should probably google "side girl" as well.
