The original is good too FYI OP(and I don't watch anme)

Also Hellsing is a really good one according to my friend

Off the top of my head:

Baccano - (short) 1930s america, mafia, immortality, action, comedy
Samurai Champloo - (short) action, hip-hop, samurais
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - (long) alchemist bros, action, drama, comedy
Mushishi - (short) episodic, supernatural creatures
Monster - (long) mystery, psychological thriller

Short = 16+ episodes. Long = 50+ episodes.

230px-Cowboy_Bebop_Logo.png

cowboy bebop (1998) is sort of the best. mixes in action, humor, and drama with some awesome music. it's jazzy and cool. there's nothing else quite like it.
all right: three, two, one- let's jam
26 episodes

230px-Champloo3.jpg

except for maybe samurai champloo (2004), a spiritual successor about two rival samurai leading a girl to find a person she's been looking for. it's a show mostly about the journey. cool music and amazing fight scenes.
yeah.
26 episodes

230px-Gits_sac_poster_v.jpg

another good one would be ghost in the shell: stand alone complex (2004). both seasons are fairly violent, but a lot of the show is about what it means to be human, an individual, etc.
time to make the sacrifice
52 episodes (26 per season)

Cowboy Bebop

I've watched only a few anime's my in life. You DEFINITELY need to watch Cowboy Bebop. It has aged a little bit, but it still looks great. Amazing music, and a good storyline with mature themes.

Trigun

180px-Trigun.jpg

I'll also throw Trigun in there as a must watch. Some childish parts, but also adult themes with a great art style. Similar to Cowboy Bebop.

And another, newer one that I saw was Eden of the East. Good animation, and intriguing storyline. The story falters a bit later on, but you might like it. I did.

Well was about to add some more but looks like everyone else has got you covered on what I was gonna recommend.

Blue Gender is also ok.

Edit: Watch School Days OP
JK OP don't really watch School Days

Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

I always start the show with a showstopper.

Yamato 2199

No love for Berserk up in here? Goddam.

I recommend watching the Berserk anime series. 25 episodes.

Read the manga.

Pray you don't die before the story has it's end.

Gaf is good today.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes starts with two gorgeous movies - My Conquest is the Sea of Stars and An Overture to a New War. Both are worth watching to see if it's something you'll want to invest your time in. The main show itself is 110 episodes long and completely unforgettable.

Yamato 2199 is an extremely sharply produced sci-fi series. It's pretty much flawless.

Berserk is something you definitely have to watch if you enjoyed Attack on Titan. It has nowhere near the amount of teen angst that AoT had, but in tone it is much more dark. The soundtrack is also amazing and while the show isn't particularly well animated, they made sure that every frame looks great.
BitterVillainousHoiho.gif

I'll add in a mention for Hellsing Ultimate. It's hilariously dark and edgy, but in a good self-aware kind of way.

Watch Paprika, it explores similar themes that Inception did.
That's a movie though, not a series.

Also give Gurren Lagann a shot, it's super exciting, super fun, and hot blooded as fuck. The premise is kind of too insane to describe, but it features mechs, space, and battles that spiral out of control so fast.

I'm kind of like the OP, except I've seen and been interested in most of the "big" anime films over my younger years (Ninja Scroll, Akira, Ghost in the Shell) but never really considered myself a huge fan. Sort of quasi-interested in the genre but by no means an expert. I'm 36 now and here's some stuff I've bought in the last few years out of sheer curiosity and reviews:

Attack on Titan. Is great. You started near the top.

Redline. on blu-ray is top-tier. It's a film and looks and sounds amazing on a great setup. It's about a futuristic car race that takes place once a year, bringing together all kinds of crazy racers from around the galaxy to try to take the prize. It's funny and stupid and smart at the same time, and has a look to it that sets it apart.

Shigurui: Death Frenzy. This is some repugnant yet beautiful shit. It's about 2 rival warriors from the same ninja/samurai school in like 1600-era Japan. They story starts as they're in their waning years and forced to fight each other in an exhibition, one has no arm, the other is blind. It then goes into their backstory and how they got to where they are.

This is not for the weak of heart or watching with the wife/girlfriend/ANY kid. There's over the top brutality, rape, sadism, BUT, it's still amazingly well done and the story it tells is fascinating. Worth a viewing if you think you can handle some of the material.

Samurai 7. This is basically an anime futuristic version of Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" (and about a dozen other remakes/variatiosn of the same theme). Rural countrymen hire ragtag group of rogue mercenaries to defend themselves against bandits. This one has mechs and shit though. I've only watched through 3-4 episodes but it'll be up your alley. For some reason I think I stopped out of life happening and never went back to it. Might be on Netflix along with Shigurui above.

So until last week I had never seen a single anime in my entire life. I can't name a single one other than Dragon Ball Z. Never had anything against anime or anything, just never really paid attention to them or went out of my way to check it out.

But a long while ago (pretty sure on this site) I stumbled on a thread about Attack On Titan when it was first coming out or in production. Thought the concept looked pretty cool, and read that it was supposed to be 'the best' anime ever, or you know, a modern classic. Anyway time passed forgot about it, whatever.

Then somehow was browsing Amazon and saw that the first season just released on Blu Ray early June. So figured what the fuck and bought it on a whim.

HOLY SHIT, that is some grade A, intense ass shit. I don't want to get into it too much as that's not what this thread is about, but basically I'm now totally sold on anime now in general, and am really excited to check out some others. And I'm stoked about the fact that there is this whole world of stuff to watch, and I haven't even begun to scratch the surface. I've played almost every good game, watched almost every good movie / tv show, read a lot of good books, but haven't watched a lot of good anime. So that's pretty sweet.

So animeGAF, please recommend some other anime series I should get into. I imagine there are a billion different kinds, so I'll try to put in what I feel like I'm looking for so you guys can fill in the blanks.

1. Mature-leaning themes / not for kids - Was a little worried at the beginning of Attack on Titan because Eren is such a whiny mother fucker through the first few episodes. Fortunately he grows up into a true badass. Doesn't need to be super violent or hardcore or anything, but not really looking for Saturday morning cartoon type stuff

2. Newish / Big-budget / high production value - I feel like AoT set the bar pretty high for me in this regard so I hope it's not all downhill from here or anything. Remember that I don't have any nostalgic connections to anything, so unfortunately I feel like it might be hard for me to get into some old corny 80's show. It's like Battlestar Galactica. If you only watched the remake, going back to the original is like wut. That said, it's mostly hand drawn cartoons so maybe I don't know wtf I'm talking about and the early shit is just as good.

3. Shorter-ish? Anime movies? - My GF's friend recommended Bleach to us (good recommendation?). But then I looked it up and it's like 350 epiodes (!). So not sure if I can commit to something that long. I don't mind getting into a longer series but would like to be able to realistically finish a series without going full balls out.

So anyway I guess that's a start. The above is just loose preferences; not married to them or anything. If there are 'holy grail' animes that are considered the best of the best classics, I'll check them out anyway.

So, go

EDIT: If you guys could just add line about what the show is about or why it's good that'd be helpful. I'm not sure if I'm ready for the onslaught of options I'm about to be served with.
People actually says this? It felt pretty mediocre to me all things considered glad you enjoyed it though you can check out Monster for a psychological thriller and Legend of the galactic hero for a sweeping space opera

Not many people saw that. Didnt expect it to be listed here.

Death Note Death Note Death Note Death Note

I always kind of roll my eyes when I see someone suggest Death Note,
because of how silly it gets,
but then I remember my first time reading it and how hype everything was.

It's the current hotness, the praise will die down and it'll fall next to Death Note and Full Metal Alchemist as series with mainstream success.

That's not to say I didn't like it or I think it's not good, it's awesome and deserves the praise.

Oh, for movies check out:

Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Paprika
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Sword of the Stranger

So, did you watch Attack on Titan in dub?

Because I know like 90% of the voice actors in that series. I have a few of them in my phone right now. But yeah, what did you think of that dub?

Also, you should totally check out some of these older but good shows.

  • Berserk TV - Epic Swords and Sorcery story.
  • Record of Lodoss Wars (The OVA) - This is inspired by D&D sessions and it shows.
  • Gunsmith Cats (They recorded real guns for the show and it takes place in a semi recognizable Chicago.) - Bounty Hunters in Chicago.
  • Haibane Renmei - There isn't really a good description of what this is. I've seen it multiple times and I'm still not completely sure.
  • Mushi Shi - An awesome show about a paranormal doctor. Every single episode is like a really awesome short film.
  • Serial Experiments Lain - It's about the Singularity, even though the tech is kind of old.
  • Romeo X Juliet - Trust me on this one. It pretty much takes place in the world of Fire Emblem in terms of style.
  • Beck - Do you like music? You're going to like this.
  • Kino's Journey - Make sure you watch the first two episodes all the way through. Then.. when you get to the third episode.. you'll be hooked. It's a bunch of non-connected stories with twists revolving around a traveler
  • Paranoia Agent - Something odd is happening in a town.. and.. well.. umm.. yeah.. it's a Detective mystery perhaps?
  • Boogiepop Phantom - Silly name. Freaking amazing show. Horror Genre.

Edited and added short descriptions...

I still wonder how Death Note, Sword Art Online and now Titan got the mainstream-appeal they got.

I mean so many people not really into anime/manga kinda digged those anime.

Seeing this thread makes me wonder, if the people in the Community threads just have a bad taste. A lot of the things you see there are the typical ecchi/uguu~ kawaii~ anime.

Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Paprika
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Sword of the Stranger

These are all choice, I highly recommend Sword of the Stranger, the animation quality and over all production values are just absolutely marvelous.

With Titan and Death Note it's mainly just good concepts that are easy to explain and people really like dark shit, so they're easy to get into.

Sword Art I haven't seen, but from what I've heard of it I have no idea why it got as big as it did, it sounds like just another anime to me.

OMG!! YESSSS THIS! I was struggling to find the name of this anime but thanks for adding this one. I loved this one alot. OP this one is a great recommendation. I do remember one of them getting a castration but yeah, it was immensely good.

A bright new Anime mind !! Ripe for the molding. OP, since you're new to Anime, I will assume you don't give a damn about "The Classics". And since you're looking for action, adult, Anime, I can only come up with a couple off the top of my head.

Gurren Lagann :
Big, loud, extravagant, an epic. And I can't tell if you want tense or epic but it'll make you well "FUCK YEAH!!" just like Attack on Titan.

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood :
Personally, it's what I use as the bar to judge all other Shonen/Action/Epic Anime. I don't think I've seen anything surpass it yet. It's 64 episodes, the two halves of the complete Anime are $33 each and 4/5 of the seasons are on Netflix. I would just recommend buying it since apparently you aren't adverse to such impulse purchases.

If you're looking for movies.
Redline. Summer Wars. Damn near everyone here will agree I would think.

seconded.
it's a mature and interesting show with well written characters and a very rich lore.
Mature? Nah... It is the most fun I've had this year of Anime watching though.

seconded.

it's a mature and interesting show with well written characters and a very rich lore.

Let's not get carried away with the mature label, here, it is pretty silly and has some really immature humor, as well as a pretty good amount of fan service. There's a ton of great outfoxing and out thinking other people, though, so it kind of appeals to people who liked Death Note or Geass, but want a less serious tone.

SAO is essentially "What if .hack would go the shounen-route."
I mean it was okay, but I think nothing groundbreaking, though so many people really thought its the best thing ever.
The pacing was totally off.

How many times its been said, you need, need, to watch Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

Also, Major. No, I know what you're thinking. Hear me out. Hear me out man. This is the most, wait for it, intense baseball anime out the-

On the topic of baseball anime, watch one outs. Its a mature psychological baseball drama that's basically anathema of all baseball anime where comraderie, guts and hard work win out. Fuck that, this is real life. 24 episodes of awesome that'll leave you wanting more guaranteed.

But getting into it, Major is amazing. Get past the first season and things really, really start to pick up. It also gets much more mature later on.

Oh, and did anyone mention Angel Beats. Yes its surprisingly mature.

Samurai X - Trust and Betrayal.
Legend of Galactic Heroes
Monster

Allthough they're a bit older, as you can see they are on the top of alot lists here.

Especially Monster has one of the best plots and characters around.

I guess this is a good place to ask.

I have never seen Gundam, not a single episode, nothing. Is there a comprehensive guide on where should I start, timelines, movies, etc? There are like 5 million series and I have absolutely no clue.

Start with the 0079 movies.

I think it was mainly right place right time for a lot of teenagers, as it got just big enough to hit them and it was their first exposure to anime that wasn't Naruto. Kind of like Full Metal Alchemist was for a group of people. But all the teens I know who loved SAO don't even give a shit about the second season because they moved onto Titan.

Also OP you really should mention if you are even willing to watch stuff in japanese or if you will only watch stuff in english.

Also as for bleach, it's ok, but you would need to look up a filler guide as you would with most long running shows.

anyways some stuff to perhaps look into...
Full metal alchemist and Full metal alchemist brotherhood. Most people will tell you just to watch brotherhood, those people are wrong. Not only is the original full metal alchemist still a good show, watching at least the first 25 or so eps before watching brotherhood will really help brotherhood as they assumed you had seen the original and cover the first 25 eps of the original (with some changes) in the first 8 or 9 eps of brotherhood.

Black lagoon has been mentioned by others and I will agree... it feels a lot more like a knock at hollywood action movies, then a japanese anime (at least for the first half) and is a great gateway anime.

Death note was also mentioned... it will also be mentioned that you should only watch season one.... again, that is mostly wrong. While the first half is much better than the second half, the second half is still better than your average other anime, it's just not great compared to the first half of death note

I'd say just start with those, and if you are still hungry for more then start expanding to stuff like hellsing, or claymore or others.
How many times its been said, you need, need, to watch Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

While I enjoy major, and enjoy the fact that there actually exists another person that has seen it I can not remotely understand why you would recommend it to someone who is looking for newer, short, high budget, mature anime.... as it's not remotely any of those (while it touches on some more serious issues later, at no point would I call it mature... I'd be stretching it to call it teen). One outs fits that a lot better, but in that case there is a good chance the OP won't want to watch stuff in japanese as their second show... I mean it's not like attack on titan is the only good anime to ever be dubbed.
