This is when and how Sonic was revealed for Smash 4:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xdk6IKbIJa0

What's to say Snake doesn't get revealed in a similar fashion? In fact, the ideal time to reveal would be during a direct that focuses on the coming launch of the game.

To be fair, Sonic probably wasn't even planned yet when Snake was revealed
And isn't that just the funniest thing? Snake was the only planned 3rd party character.

and there's good reason to believe Pacman (and Mii and Mac) were originally planned for the same E3 as Megaman.
It doesn't matter if he was "planned to" be shown at E3 because he wasn't shown there. That's the point.

I remember when Sonic was announced for Brawl. The next day was incredibly unproductive at work. Me and everybody I called/talked to about it were to high on "the vapors" to get anything done at our respective jobs LOL

He was revealed during at an earnings report. Iwata himself announced it.

I distinctly remember the freak out on GAF when someone translated the Japanese tweets to "Sonikku in Sumabura."

I thought I remember him being revealed in some sort of presentation now that I think about it, but I had no idea what the fuck Twitter was still at the time so I probably missed that.

At any rate, to try and offer an olive branch to both sides, I think the bottom line here is it's not obvious whether Snake is in or whether Snake is cut.

And boy is it frustrating that Sakurai is not upfront about these matters. I know he wants us to keep talking since it keeps the game on everyone's radar, but man... Just tell us who's cut.

But if he tells us who's cut we know who's not cut which spoils the secret characters :p

Gosh, got a link to that and the snake reveal?

Still feel a little robbed that they saved the reveals for roundtables...

It opens it up to lots of questions about why and those might not be answers he's willing or able to give.

While you guys were talking about Snake and the PoTD (when the break from conversation is about RIDLEY, you know something's gone wrong), I found this gem

The delivery on both "Two cubic tons" is amazing

lol, I always liked that skit. Interesting to see it turned into a pokemon animation though :P
Here's the original video it's taken from (the sketch is @ 6:35) (warning, some sketches contain swears :o) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncom7P42FS8

I don't expect to see Snake return. I don't have any evidence of that, but a few things that cause me to believe that are:

1) He hasn't been revealed yet
2) We've got three third-party characters, which is one more than previous entries
3) Snake's connections to the game are somewhat weaker (in my opinion) than those of the other revealed third-party characters
4) We're seeing moves of certain characters resemble some of Snake's moves from Brawl (Sheik's grenades, Zero Suit's Final Smash)

These aren't nails in Snake's proverbial coffin, and you can argue against these. But these are just the things I see that make me feel as though it's unlikely he will return.

I don't have a horse in this race though. If Snake's back, I'm cool with that. If he's gone, I don't really mind either.

I really do want Snake back, he added that special something to smash, like snake is the straight man of the group

This was Sonic's reveal trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNMm7Kxx6rM

Gosh, Sonic looked weird as hell in Brawl.

I don't think anybody filmed the Smash Snake trailer from the audience, but a website named etoychest ended up leaving a recorder on by accident and then later released the audio and someone synched it up to the trailer...which I can't find at the moment.

I know there's at least one video of the reaction out there for snake, but I don't wanna go digging for it.

It's pretty great though. You can just feel the room filling more and more with confused wound up hype throughout the codec call. Bahaha.

Never knew where it was from
Bit it was hilarious to me

Animation does it better imo though
Sandile's expression kills me

Oh, I wasn't knocking what you found, it's still funny in any form. Just figured it'd be worth linking the original because there's others skits on it too :3

...that said, whoever did the pokemon animation seemed to forget that Lilligants can only be female :P

Pretty much.

Anyone trying to blur the lines, and say they're all 3rd parties and have the same significance when it comes to thier influence on Nintendo is kidding themselves.

So this week PSASBR was on sale. $5.00, if you're curious. I was curious. I regret being curious.

I dunno, in a vacuum, that game is not the worst thing ever? It feels like it's decidedly a budget title that they for some reason sold for sixty american dollars, but I can see how people would derive enjoyment from it. But playing both Smash 4 and this game in the same week, it's clear how much personality they make sure is in Smash that isn't there at all in PSASBR.

Like, everyone in PSASBR is quiet unless they're using Supers or respawning, when it's just a few canned lines. The levels themselves barely make noise except for some dialogue you can't really concentrate on. Like, game mechanics aside (PSASBR's are terrible, supers for points are you fucking kidding), the big thing that makes Smash Smash and PSASBR PSASBR is that they just didn't figure out how to make that game come alive. It doesn't feel like the characters came from their games and everyone's fighting in their universes and I hadn't realized how important that was to the game.

I kinda want to see how they did their 'clashing environments'.

Is Kat also on sale?

It's all pre-scripted transformations. Parappa becomes...I think it's Metal Gear? And it happens every time at the same time. It sort of loses its luster after the second time.

Don't know about DLC.

What does it mean by the charge up period doubling when you complete a cycle?

The way I took it, basically:

it's a charge move, and the longer you hold it it'll cycle through each fruit. Each fruit has a time you hold to cycle (say, 1 second) but when you get to orange it'll be 2-second holds from then on until you go through the whole cycle back to cherry.

I dunno if that's true, but that's how i interpreted it

Man, after seeing wonderful Splatoon art like this:

tumblr_n7dydvCt4Q1smn62mo1_400.gif

I really hope we get some representation from it in Smash one day. It really has a Dreamcast-y art style.

So if I understand correctly, Sakurai is basically saying that if you can't get the desired fruit the first go-around, subsequent cycles will make it easier since they'll go slower... but the tradeoff is you'll have to charge longer to get there.

I assume that each change is a damage tier and the fruit visual is only to indicate a change in the tiers. So even if it's in the second cycle, it's still getting stronger with each fruit change.

Oh, what I was picturing was it rotating through a series of fruits, and each fruit is a different damage value. And on the first rotation, it's very fast, so it's unlikely you'll throw the one you want. So you have to charge it, and on the second rotation it'll go slower... and the third rotation even slower... making it easier to pick out the high-damage fruits. But yeah, maybe your interpretation is correct.

To me, thats the largest diffrence between smash and PSABR, the attention to detail and such in every character, arguably this was because of the lack of budget, but lest we forget smash bros. for the N64 was also a budget title which I believe had even less features then playstation allstars

Yeah, I picked it up last time it was on sale along with lots of super-reduced price DLC (I just wanted Kat :P )

It's not the worst game I've played but it's not very intuitive (I had to keep reminding other players about various things, including the fact that beating on someone is for meter and won't ever kill them.)
The fact you don't care who you're hitting because it all builds your energy the same makes it feel very insular too, more like a 1 player game. Of course, if you miss with your super then everything you did to build the bar was a complete waste of time too which is very disheartening :P

I also agree that it doesn't feel very cohesive either and to be frank the weird mixing of the level themes doesn't help any :o

Exactly. PSABR's problem was a mixture of low budget and the talent behind it. Superbot was a new studio and cannot be compared to Sakurai and the amount of detail and content he can pack in a game.

I really want the Inklings as DLC. I don't expect them, but I want them.

If you guys had to guess, how long do you think it would take them to make the Inklings, from scratch?

I don't expect it to happen either, but Sakurai has most likely known about them a lot longer than us, so it's possible they've been preparing something. As for how long it would take...I have no idea. A few months probably? At least to get the balancing right.

Making brand new characters like Inklings DLC sort of kills hype for an eventual Smash 5 though.
I feel like DLC characters should only go as far as bringing back cut characters and adding new clones (like Slippy as a new Fox clone :p)

I feel part of it comes down to character choice.

With one or two exceptions, everyone in Smash feels better to control than in their own games. Even in more action-oriented games, Smash tends to make those same actions more fluid and fun to do. It's probably one of the reasons for Sakurai's "No fighting game characters" rule.

With PSASBR, everyone I tried felt worse than in their own game. Granted, those characters were Raiden, Heihachi, and Dante, but it felt more limiting to use them in PSASBR than their individual games. I feel like that's something Sakurai tries to be aware of with characters.

Can't determine if DLC Smash would be great or terrifying. At least no more five year waits between series. Was shocked to watch the Brawl trailer again and realse how many gens behind they were with Pokemans, and absolutely zero Galaxy representation at all!

This is exactly how I feel, we shouldnt want DLC for smash,(unless its like a stage, or characters sakurai didnt get the chance fo finish or whatever) because the hype leading into smash 5 will be lessened.
