Who else would be cut over Snake? The Ice Climbers? Wolf? He's the obvious choice to go.
How about Lucas, the only character the Gematsu leak has indicated is likely to be cut?

It's not like there's a "cut quota" Sakurai has to meet. For all we know, everyone could be back.

I don't really care about Snake getting in either way...but I'm gonna err on the side of him not returning. I'm fairly confident that he has no chance of showing up.

I don't mind taking a bet for fun, as long as the "punishment" isn't stupidly long, because even if he does show up, it's not like I'm gonna be pissed or anything about it. It's another character on the roster.

Plus, I have never changed my avatar since I've joined GAF. Good time as any to
never
change it up.

To the Snake naysayers...just remember, you thought Toon Link would be cut...and then he was confirmed. You thought Lucario was gone for good, yet he showed up and proved you wrong. You thought Ike wouldn't be back, but here he is. Okay, maybe you didn't think all of this personally, but many, many people did, and chances are, unless you've always thought there would be no cuts, you probably thought at least one of those characters wasn't going to be returning before they were confirmed.

I'm just saying, don't count Snake (or anyone else, for that matter...except maybe Squirtle and Ivysaur) out just yet.

Wolf for sure, and Lucas (in light of the leak.) ROB is logical, too. All three of those characters are less unique or less beloved (or both) than Snake.
Lucas I'll give you (he's probably gone too), but Wolf is a major recurring character in a series that's still turning out games on Nintendo platforms, there's no reason for him to go. Saying Snake is a bigger Nintendo allstar than ROB is downright ridiculous. Might as well add Wario and Game and Watch to that list while you're at it.

I have reasons for thinking that he's cut.

I don't particularly wish to debate it when people are throwing around insults.
I'm looking at the other posts and I don't see anyone casting insults.

If you have reasons, please share them, because the only ones I've seen so far is "he's not announced yet."

This is describing someone who is not me.

So if you guys could have any three characters and three assists in the new Smash, what would they be? I figure this could be fun.

Characters:

1. Wonder Red (The Wonderful 101)
2. Hades (Kid Icarus Uprising)
3. Ridley (Metroid)

ATs:

1. Reyn [time!] (Xenoblade)
2. Mr. Stevenson (Gumshoe)
3. Felix (Golden Sun)

Exactly.

Snake could be cut.

Or he could be in.

I'm capable of seeing both possibilities.

I see several. You're either ignoring those posts are choosing not to believe they're insults.

Either way, I'm not delving too deep in to this quagmire at this point. Everyone else can knife fight for as long as they like.

You can say that about any unconfirmed veteran who isn't Lucas though. You could even say that about Squirtle and Ivysaur as much as you can about Snake. He's still one of the most likely up for the chopping block.

While folks here are using reasoning and all kinds of sleuthy deducing, I think Snake has just a chance as anyone to return cause Sakurai HIMSELF said (I think it was in the Direct that officially unveiled Smash U gameplay that came with the Greninja reveal at the end) that it pains him to cut ANYBODY and always tries to do his best to keep everyone whenever inclusions are made.

Besides, other than the transition from Melee to Brawl, I think he divulged on the excuses as to why he didn't include characters/removed some and they were supposed to be legit. Even with the Lucas/Ness thing and as much as I like Earthbound/Mother, I can understand why a cut might be made between the two cause with custom movesets in now, one of the two boys could effectively be obsolete depending on how they want to spin it. I'd rather see a moveset overhaul with more though for move selection from the games for one and tweaks to the other, but at the same time I can understand their way of thinking.

do you mean the direct that cut Ivysaur and Squirtle

Sakurai values unique characters first and foremost. By that metric, Wolf would be in greater danger.

But again, Sakurai could end up bringing -everyone- back. No one's holding a gun to his head telling him he has to cut X number of characters.

Which again, is why I say it's not obvious how it will pan out, one way or the other. And so no one can say, however it turns out, that it was obvious all along.

Either way, I'm not delving too deep in to this quagmire at this point. Everyone else can knife fight for as long as they like.
Come on, it's all in good fun. What are the reasons you think Snake is cut?

The game isn't out yet so we don't know if they not coming back. Yeah one can argue there's plenty of Pokemon on the roster as it is or whatever but apparently that hasn't stopped the Mario series

Because as it stands now, in this moment, we simply can't tell one way or another. He could just as easily be in the wings waiting as a future reveal, not unlike Captain Falcon and numerous other characters.

Whichever way things shake out, one side doesn't suddenly look smarter than the other.

I hope this article catches on, because that's exactly what's been frustrating.

I've never said he's certainly coming back, or any of that kind of shit like half of the people that seem to want him cut so bad do. I've just had all the bullet points of that article in my head and have used them in arguments for what seems like forever now on why I think his chances are undoubtedly better than people think.

But it no one hears it, even though besides the obvious fact that he's a third party, all of these arguments besides a rare few on why "his chances are lowered" have always held little to no merit. And I can say that confidently.

So yeah. I mean at this point I know what I'm dealing with, but it would be nice if more people didn't think I was crazy. So go article, go.

To be honest, I still find myself scratching my head over the fact that toon link still wasn't changed to reflect his own series more rather than just copy-pasting link's toolset with a few tweaks OR cut. The fact that neither happened boggles my silly lil' mind :o

I think the only thing that could make me go into a lil hissy fit as much as Toon Link's reveal showing nothing major had changed would/will be Chrom getting in. I don't even care if the blue-haired lord's moves are a beautiful, unique snowflake; my sense of aesthetics rankles at the mere thought of another person from the same series with the same general look :P While I agree with Golnei's assessment of Shulk in the previous thread (which was a beautiful read, by the way :3 ) Chrom bugs me way, way more.

Snake? He could be replaced with an assist that traps someone in his 2 person love box with him for a few awkward seconds and massive percent damage for all I care, though for snake die-hards I guess it would be nice if he made a playable encore appearance (preferably with fixed hitboxes) :P

I did not expect those Nintendo characters to be cut, I have my reasons for believing Snake might not return, yes.
Okay. To be fair, I was the same way. Never thought any of those characters would be cut, but I have worried about Snake, if only because he's third-party. But I think the majority of people who think he'll be cut also probably thought at least one of those other characters would be cut prior to their confirmation, because so many people thought those three would be some of the first characters to be cut.

Are you serious? There is a basis to the notion that Ivysaur and Squirtle won't return. Sakurai explicitly revealed that there would be no more transforming characters and that Charizard would be returning as a solo character in the same time frame.

Snake however has just as much a chance of returning as Sonic did. There is NO difference between the Sonic and Snake's chances. Your hunches are not the same thing as logic.

Very well. We'll decide when the time comes. Until then, don't forget.

Top 3s:

Characters
1. Mona (Wario Ware).
2. A female magic user from Fire Emblem (too bad Micaiah missed her chance).
3. A Square Enix representative to complete the lineup of big Japanese third-parties.

Assist trophies
1. Yin-Yarn (turns players into yarn models of themselves).
2. Giygas (obscures screen and/or reverses controls).
3. Eggplant Wizard.

Wait, so having an opinion means people aren't capable of seeing either side?
No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that come September, when we know the full roster, if it turns out Snake is in, the people who believed he would be in can't say it was obvious. And if it turns out Snake is out, the people who believed he was cut can't say it was obvious, either. Because as it stands, right here right now, there is no more evidence to suggest Snake is in than there is to suggest he's out. Looking at what we objectively have before us, there's just as much reason for optimism as there is for pessimism.

So if you guys could have any three characters and three assists in the new Smash, what would they be? I figure this could be fun.

Playable:

1. Excitebiker
2. Isaac
3. Daisy (lolol)

AT:

1. Inkling
2. Eggplant Wizard
3. King Boo (I'd rather him playable, but I could only include three...he"d be fourth).

What makes you think this? Mewtwo was cut and never came back, and it's very likely Squirtle and Ivysaur are gone as well. Even if they weren't, Pokemon Trainer, arguably one of the most unique characters in the game, was removed. Ganondorf was added because he's an important character, obviously not because his moveset was unique. Falco stayed around after Melee, Toon Link stayed around after Brawl.

Again -- why do you think there's a cut quota?

Pic of the day. Pac-Man's standard special move, Bonus Fruit. As you charge this move, the bonuses will change, and all of them have different characteristics and movement patterns when thrown. The bonuses cycle in the same order as in the original game, and the charge-up period doubles once you cycle beyond the orange.

I'm thinking (and hoping) that maybe its cause with the custom moveset deal, we could "effectively create" a Toon Link that is closer to his own games. We haven't see what his custom moves would be and Sakurai never explicitly stated that the moves would always work like a variant of existing moves, nor anything about flat out changes in animations or anything...I know its a bit of far-fetched thinking but hey I'm just trying to tackle it with an open mind

If Snake were in the game, he would have been announced by now. I'm willing to make an avatar bet over it.
So you're saying, objectively, it's absolutely impossible Sakurai would save a big-name reveal for a Direct later this summer? You're saying its absolutely impossible he might be saved for closer to launch?

Why can't the two be added as their own separate characters? Sakurai has said in the past that he hates cutting characters, and they're original ones to boot. Plus I know tons of people who loved playing as them in Brawl and went berserk with joy when they were first revealed. I know people like to imagine that there are a limited number of "spots" for pokemons, but Sakurai can do whatever he wants, and I think he will to keep such unique characters. It's really just down to Sakurai, I'm sure the Pokemon company would be more than willing to let him use those characters in his game again. Sure, they might be cut, but they also might not be cut. You really can't say either way what will happen.

Well, Snake discussion have been ongoing for two days, so I would appreciate it if people are going to give this topic a rest and we would come back to it if we are getting close to Direct or Smash Direct 2. Snake discussion seem to be very sensitive topic around here lately.

Wow, that's awesome! So by charging, he cycles through a selection of different projectiles... How many did we see in his trailer?
