Ghost in the Shell
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Death Note

Basically shows that already have been mentioned a bunch of times in this thread, lol.

I also recommend Rainbow Nisha Rokubou no Shichini

It really does hit you in the feels and features the greatest anime punch of all time.

Shiki
If you want some horror where shit hits the fan in the grandest fashion possible( I mean it makes AoT's titan attacks look tame) then watch this. A small isolated town that gets invaded by vampires, the last few episodes are incredible.

For sports, I can't recommend Hajime no Ippo enough. One outs and Initial D too.
If you ever want to get into the romantic comedies, I like to go old school 80s with Maison Ikkoku and Kimagure Orange Road.
Fruits Basket rocks too.

You never get to know much about the characters in Samurai Champloo. And the two guys are assholes. I don't see the appeal of that show at all.

DEFINITELY watch Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo!

You never get to know much about the characters in Samurai Champloo. And the two guys are assholes. I don't see the appeal of that show at all.

You know plenty about them. There are several backstory episodes for all the characters... And you try living in that time period, you'd probably be an asshole too.

the movies and series are not in the same universe and exist independent of them. I vastly prefer the tv series over the movies... but if you are more into artsy stuff the movies will likely appeal to you more.... Regardless of my thoughts on the ghost in the shell movies... they are both beautiful works of art when it comes to the animation and design.

If you want to check out the series though
universe 1
Ghost in the shell
Ghost in the shell innocence

universe 2
Ghost in the shell stand alone complex
ghost in the shell stand alone complex second gig
ghost in the shell stand alone complex solid state society (great movie, only movie from the tv series that adds to the plot instead of just recapping a season aka ignore the laughing man move and the individual 11 movie and just watch the seasons instead)

universe 3
ghost in the shell arise (still airing.... slowly... so very slowly)

I endorse the GitS movies and TV shows. Good stuff.

No Captain Tsubasa love?
ilustracao_tsubasa_1404.jpg

Absolute blasphemy that it wasn't included in that Sports list.

P.S. Anyone know any decent baseball animes? Was watching this one the other day called One Outs and it was pretty cool. Loved how technical it wa explaining different pitching techniques and rules etc. Wanting more!

Definitely watch Ninja Scroll. It's probably my favorite anime movie ever. It's pretty badass. There's some nudity in it, so u should know that before hand.

Also, I recommend Fist of the North Star and Ghost in the Shell(the movie, not the series).

You should watch BASILISK asap. One of the best and most mature anime I have ever had the pleasure of watching. It always surprises me that I have never seen it on someone else's list here, ever.

and I mean there have even been some good english songs licenced for anime

I think you forgot a few things...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9CXmEUwvgM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7BJmwMDj4o

And speaking of Mr. Big, they also had another song in anime. "Colorado Bulldog" in Kamisama No Memochou. Sadly, only in the first episode (as the ED).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-1Fo1yCyLc

And from me (most of which was probably already mentioned, if not all):

- Ghost In The Shell (both the movie and the TV series. They are totally different takes and aren't really connected to each other. The movie still looks great, but maybe watch out for GITS 2.0. It's a recreation with lots of 3DCG used and some other graphical changes. And it's almost universally considered inferior to the original)
- Millenium Actress
- Perfect Blue (this and the previous one are by Satoshi Kon. I really recommend watching his works)
- Spice And Wolf
- Fate/Zero (great action series, but I think you may miss some things - probably subtleties - without watching Fate/Stay Night which isn't considered that great of an adaptation. Or maybe I'm just not a fan of watching things like that without knowing the source, even if they are prequels. Since people have no problem with suggesting it - not only here...)
- Kino No Tabi
- Studio Ghibli movies (dunno. Nausicaa, Grave Of The Frieflies and Porco Rosso might be good bets from the top of my head, but it's just hard to choose only a few specific ones from them)
- Haibane Renmei
- Steins;Gate
- Gunslinger Girl (although I think the original manga is better. The whole "little girls with guns" setting might be offputting, but it's more of a drama/action than straight-out action)

Here's the 2nd tier after LoGH and Mushishi.

Everything GitS
Juuni Kokuki
Mononoke
Planetes
Monster
Kino's Journey
Seirei no Moribito
Shoujo Kakumei Utena
Welcome to the N.H.K.
Zipang

Complement the list with some Yoshitoshi ABe, Satoshi Kon's & Masaaki Yuasa's works. I may be missing some but that's about it. For some series, you are better off tackling the original sources.

If you really need to watch one Ghibli movie, go for Only Yesterday.

The ghibli movies got me to check out a bunch of anime series, these are the ones I enjoyed:

All the studio ghibli movies, seriously they are really good make sure to check them out. These you can also show to your family/friends without shame, they are like disney/pixar movies (but with more focus on character exposition and growth)
Akira
FLCL
cowboy bebop
neon genesis evangelion (this was the first anime I watched , 10 years ago when I was 19, I really enjoyed it , not sure how much I'd like it now I'm older)
Paprika
death note

full metal alchemist is pretty good too, but more for a younger audience, it's high quality though, great sense of adventure
Watched fate/zero a while ago and it was decent too, but not of the quality of the ones above

Ones I've tried and couldn't make it more than a few episodes in:
code gaess
planetes
stein's gate

No love for Berserk up in here? Goddam.

I recommend watching the Berserk anime series. 25 episodes.

Watch the 3 movie adaptations if you want a little more, but it covers the same content.

I liked the series more than the movies.

Read the manga.

Pray you don't die before the story has it's end.

It takes place in a medieval type setting. It's mainly about a young man that joins a mercenary group. Dark, gritty, violent, mature.
Thank you!

Yea I definitely suggest watching Berserk as well. I have an issue with it, but it's still great.

This thread has a pretty eclectic variety of shows recommended in it, which is always nice to see. I won't throw my hat into the ring at this venture because there's already hundreds of hours worth of recommendations in here.

The only advice I'd offer to the OP is: go for shorter works first. Movies and OVA's (anime mini series) are you friend because they respect your time in a manner that TV anime does not. Far too many TV anime run on for 50+ episodes and I don't think that should be your first port of call when you have so many great short titles to check out.

Uh, I don't know. I kinda like Cowboy Bebop. Space Dandy is pretty alright.

Um... I think there was something else but I forgot.

oh wait NEVER FUCKING MIND

What's it about? How the fuck should I know? Guns! Explosions! The three scariest women on the planet! Pirates in the 1990s or some shit! A protagonist with actual balls! All I know is shit is so raw you need a goddamn cig afterwards!

iOlXsTBXz7EeL.gif

And I don't even smoke!

The only thing it's NOT about is FUCKS cuz it gives ZERO.

CAUTION: WILL RUIN YOU FOR SHONEN BULLSHITTERY FOR ALL TIME

What are you, scared? Watch this shit you LIMP DICKED SONS OF BITCHES!

watch Boku no Pico, you won't regret it
ignore that, I am sorry if you actually watch it

Fate/*insert here* are pretty good, especially Zero, both series start slow put get pretty intense in a couple of chapters
Basilisk - Ninja clans killing each other
X1999 - eschatology-eske serie
Gintama - a show that can kill you of laughter or make you cry like a 4 years old sometimes
Puella Magi Madoka Magica - seems like a harmless magical girl show but everything gets pretty fucked up as the show goes on
Darker than Black - interesting plot and good suspense

there's not much on the list that previous gafer didn't mentioned already, thou IMO most animes are guilty pleasures, or above the media, only a few are truly master pieces

There's a lot of them. Off the top of my head...
Dia no Ace/Ace of Diamond (currently airing)
Ookiku Furikabutte/Big Windup
Major

...and of course the Adachi shows which feature a lot of baseball but skew more into the relationship side of things:
Cross Game
H2
Touch

Yeah, these threads usually end up nicely illustrating just how broad a medium anime is. Definitely agree with the advice to start with shorter series, OVAs, or movies. Much less time commitment, and at least for OVAs and movies, the budget and production values tend to be higher as well.

Lots of good to great stuff has already been recommended, but here are some of my picks:

Legend of the Galactic Heroes - 110 episodes. You need to be willing to invest a lot of time into this series and deal with lots of talking heads, but for the most part the experience is definitely worth it. The show combines a surprisingly detailed portrayal of politics and warfare with a compelling space opera. It's adapted from a series of actual novels and it shows, given the huge scope of the story and its events. The use of real classical music is also a highlight if you're into that. It's different from a lot of typical anime, to be clear, but that's usually a good thing and actually makes it easier for non-fans to get into the show. If the length sounds intimidating, there are valid stopping points between the "seasons" in order to take a break. Just don't watch the next episode previews.

Gunbuster - 6 episodes. Great use of Super Robot action with an interesting mix of semi-scientific concepts on the side to fuel the drama angle. The protagonist is something of a whiny girl at first and the initial episodes aren't necessarily the best, but as the show moves on the scale of the action increases, the situation gets serious and she does grow into an individual with more self-confidence. The ending remains particularly memorable and is regularly considered one of the best in anime.

Gundam 0080 - 6 episodes. For the record, this short series is nothing like Gundam Wing. This is sort of the odd one out even among the rest of Gundam shows in general, by being the least commercially appealing, but you don't need to see absolutely anything else in order to appreciate it. It's a down-to-earth war story in an isolated setting with some of the more relatable characters in the property. You do get a couple of well-animated robot battles, but the point of the series is the human perspective behind them. I would even recommend it to people who aren't fans of mecha shows or the military sci-fi action that comes with them.

Code Geass - 50 episodes. The series has a lot of over-the-top and theatrical entertainment value, both in terms of drama and comedy, plus an interesting protagonist with villainous tendencies, who has magic eye powers but is also conflicted and far from perfect. There's a decent contrast with his main rival too, who is more of a traditional heroic figure, given their different ideals/methods. While the second half can be frustrating and messy, admittedly, I do think the ending makes it worthwhile. That's the gist of it, but you'll definitely get more out of the experience if you value themes and emotions over realism and logic. Or, to put it another way, if you like rollercoaster rides.

Planetes - 26 episodes. Mostly based on a manga, this is a series about garbage men (and women) in space. The characters are all adults, albeit not necessarily acting their age all the time, and it's nice how there's a lot of attention to detail when it comes to the depiction of life in space and how the technology works. You also have some romance and office sitcom elements sprinkled throughout. The TV series does become something of a thriller towards the end, which tends to separate it from the original source material's more existentialist perspective. Both are highly recommended.

Rurouni Kenshin: Reminiscence - 4 episodes. Also known as Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal. You don't need to watch or read the rest of Rurouni Kenshin in order to see this prequel. It works perfectly as a self-contained origin tale, with an emphasis on the darker and more dramatic aspects of the story in a bleak and unforgiving setting. Great direction, character animation, soundtrack and action choreography make this one of the more memorable anime productions set in this time period. It's not necesarily the most realistic take on samurai ever, but it is a little more grounded than some of the more openly supernatural productions.

Since you liked Attack on Titan I recommend these:

  1. Death Note
  2. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Trust me you'll like them. They're not even that long, Death Note is only like 37 episodes.

It's funny cause I am in the exact situation. I'm 25, never really watched any Animes other than Dragon Ball Z and a few Ghibli movies but somehow stumbled on a few sites saying Attack on Titan was great. After getting hooked immediately, I am now up to date with AoT and currently have a huge list lined up of supposedly good Animes with about a week to spare on my Crunchy Roll free trial.

Planning on watching Mushishi next which I hear is also very good. Not too sure what it is about, seeing as to how the synopsis' that I read are a little vague, but from what I understand it should be about these traveling researchers trying to learn about a very basic life form called "Mushi". Either way I'm going to give it a shot and it doesn't seem as hectic and high-octane as AoT, which will be a nice change of pace.

This thread has inspired me to get back into anime. I already have most of the Ghibli films, complete sets of Death Note and Escaflowne, and a handful of others like Akira and Ninja Scrolls, but I haven't watched any for years.
Just ordered Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and the box sets of Cowboy Bebop, really looking forward to watching them.

I always recommend Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist to people just getting into anime. FMA Brotherhood is still the peak of anime for me personally.

Ghibli movies as well.

Yep. Death Note is something I have recommended to a anime newcomers , and they were hooked.

If you want some insanity , watch Baki the Grappler, I don't know how to put the "insanity " into words.

A few people already recommended Hajime no Ippo, but I must repeat the statement: Hajime no Ippo is one of the finest anime around. The show can be hysterical at times, extremely heart-felt, an amazing OST, and stellar characters.

This thread is reminding me that I need to watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Go with old animes first. Start with Full Metal Panic. :D

full-metal-panic-konachan-anime-design_773190.jpg

It would be good if you can check out anime movies first. Dont miss out on Wonderful Days. It's Korean, but it is very good.

What's the situation concerning a third season (no, I will not consider that spinoff as a real season)? I recall the manga being completed a half-year ago.

Hunter x Hunter 2011, might be the my favorite Shounen anime now. I'd also check out Yu Yu Hakusho if you've never seen it. Its a true classic.

If you have netflix you can check out fate/zero, and (sooon) knights of sidonia. Those should both style your flavor if you're looking for something to chase attack on titan.

After that though, I would temper your expectations a bit. Titan is sort of a breakout title, and not everything is going to strike the same chords. Remember that anime or animation is a medium not a genre and you'll have the best experiences sticking with what you like in other mediums like film and television.

Mature? Anime...well you should approach for its fun factor more than anything.

I recommend Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
JoJo can be watched on Crunchyroll, start with Part 1 Phantom Blood then work your way to catch up with the 3rd Part which is currently airing.

Uh, I don't know. I kinda like Cowboy Bebop. Space Dandy is pretty alright.

Would like some recs for one off anime movies from 80s and 90s. I see a tonne of them on youtube. Likes of Golgo 13 etc. Adult themes, action, great music

PD9KFDg.jpg

1. Psycho-Pass (22 episodes) - In the future, it is possible to quantitatively measure a person's emotions, desires, and every inclination. In this way, it is also possible to measure a person's criminal tendency factor, which is used to judge criminals.

This is the story of a team of policemen dedicated to maintaining public order. Some of them work in the Enforcement Division, responsible for the apprehension of criminals, while others belong to the Supervisory Division which oversees their colleagues in Enforcement.

eS39bgF.jpg

2. Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex + 2nd Gig (26 episodes each) - In the year 2030, digital networks are reaching out everywhere, and technology pushing light and electrons has advanced to a state where it almost drives the human will...

Information networks continue to expand and crimes continue to become more complex. In this society on the borderline to chaos, an organization that specializes in hunting down and eliminating crime was established. This is Section 9, the so called "Stand Alone Complex" (S.A.C.), under the direct supervision of the Ministry of the Interior.

Its duties include a wide range of investigations, such as responding to critical cyber crimes, guarding VIPs within the country, revealing political corruption, investigating violent murder, and dealing with top secret assassination cases. The elite S.A.C. is at its best in cyber confrontations, but it is also extremely capable of physical confrontations by utilizing high quality cyborgs.

RziN263.jpg

3. Kingdom (S1 - 38 episodes; S2 - 39 episodes) - Fictionalized account of the Warring States period primarily through the experiences of the war orphan Xin and his comrades as he fights to become a Great General of the Heavens and, in doing so, unifying China for the first time in history.

JmeIduX.jpg

4. Planetes (26 episodes) - It is the year 2075. In a world where travelling between Earth, the space stations and the Moon has become commonplace.

Hachimaki is just an ordinary salaryman. He works at a space station collecting dangerous space debris. However, he dreams of owning his very own space ship someday. And so he spends his days collecting debris together with his colleagues Yuri, Fee and his friend Tanabe. Now it is his fourth year doing the same work and he is going to be 25 years old soon, which is why he starts to think about his life.

Man Planetes gets recommended so much everywhere, yet I'm 8 episodes in and it doesn't really grab me at all. Usually I'm prone to binge watching shows but with that one I didn't get farther in like 3 weeks.

Mind you I do think it's pretty decent so far and if there's more good character progress it may get better. Until now though, ehh. Am mostly not a fan of some of the more comical character appearances, like the chief of the garbage facility and his flamboyant underling.

That said, please don't spoil me anything, I'm certainly gonna finish the series.

@ OP
You got so many series recommendations already, I'll just mention two of my favorite movies:
"5cm per Second" and "Princess Mononoke"
