SOOO INNNNN
literally have so much more to watch after this thread, GAF <3 <3 <3

While I agree that everyone should give Gintama a shot, I feel like it's at its best when you've experienced some of the tropes found in other anime first.

Anyway, here's some of what we have on Blu-ray off the top of my head. I'm sure you'll find something fun in there:

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.
Claymore
Hellsing Ultimate
Redline
Miyazaki films
Gintama: The Movie
Perfect Blue
Summer Wars
Wolf Children

Stopped watching anime but I still like to recommend them:

Must watch:
All Shinkai films- After watching 5cmps, pick up the novel and manga.
Cowboy Bebopy-classic and the animation/style is way better than most anime nowadays
Haibane Renmei -Definitely a must watch if you've read hard boiled wonderland and the end of the world. If not, still watch it.
Death Note - Don't listen to the people who say only watch S1. Watch the whole thing.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Welcome to the NHK-get the novel, it's way better but still a good anime.
Flower of Evil-the last good anime I've seen. After this, dropped anime.
Daily Lives of High School Boys -one of the few anime that made me laugh.
School Rumble -funny as well!
Lain
Monster
Steins;Gate
Into the Firefly Forest.
Tatami Galaxy- If you love NHK, you will love this. Great style, great soundtrack, great characters.
Time of Eve-watch the movie
Honey and Clover S2

Good:
Clannad S1 & S2
The flower we saw that day
Hyouka- Beginning is pretty slow but it picks itself up. I would put this in the must category but some episodes are a miss.
Future Diary
Durarara
My Little Monster- this ended way too early. Could have been really great imo. I should pick the manga up soon.
Honey and Clover 1
One Outs

...I think I posted way too much. That's should be good enough though.

Instead of telling you what to watch, I will instead give advice on surviving this hobby with your sanity intact.

1. Beware of anything set in a school that isn't called GTO.
2. Are little girls the main characters? Is it called Aza Mango Daioh? No? Then run.
3. Naruto and bleach are going to seem awesome... for about 50 or so eps each. Then, you will realize they are terrible.
4. Believe in the Watanabe... believe!
5. Almost anything from the 80 holds up way, way better than you expect it too. Akira, Berserk, GTO, ect.
6. Remember, people will recommend you garbage and say it's the best thing ever. Don't be mad, just accept this fandom's oppinions are all over the fuckin place, and move on.
7. Don't buy a goddamn hugging pillow.

Alright, hopefully that will be enough to get you started off on the right foot. So please enjoy your time with the japan stuff.

Man Planetes gets recommended so much everywhere, yet I'm 8 episodes in and it doesn't really grab me at all. Usually I'm prone to binge watching shows but with that one I didn't get farther in like 3 weeks.

Mind you I do think it's pretty decent so far and if there's more good character progress it may get better. Until now though, ehh. Am mostly not a fan of some of the more comical character appearances, like the chief of the garbage facility and his flamboyant underling.

That said, please don't spoil me anything, I'm certainly gonna finish the series.

It's been a few years since I watched Planetes, but I remembered the 2nd half being really good and the last episode giving me a very satisfied smile. And I absolutely love that soundtrack.

Also:

Ao No Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)
This show is the shit, fucking badass and cool. And omfg the OST IS SO GOOD.

I might have to give Monster a try among other things.....

Why hello there.....

I'm probably not going to add much to the table, but here goes. Everything below is an anime series, and except for FMA:B and Space Brothers, has 26 episodes.

- Cowboy Bebop: A show with a great overarching theme that ties stuff together. It has its share of action, comedy and drama, all in the right amount, and characters are also well-written

- Neon Genesis Evangelion: A humungous mecha anime that focuses more on the cast and their psyche than on over-the-top robot battles

- Wolf's Rain: A series about a distopian world that's about to end, and a group of wolves that go on a journey to find "paradise". Mostly character-driven. Note: This series had four OVAs that wrapped up the story, so you should look into watching them as well

- Umineko no naku no koro ni: Haven't finished watching this, but it was about a family visiting an island to settle inheritance issues and a series of grisly, inexplicable murders. There's a witch and magic involved, but the protagonist sets out to prove there's a far more mundane explanation for the seemingly impossible happenings

- Durarara: A crazy series that keeps jumping from the point of view of one character to the other in a realistic world ridden with supernatural entities, such as a modern-day dullahan or possessed swords, none of which are actually throwaway characters. Note: despite the supernatural stuff, this series is not primarily action-driven

- Baccano: Another anime adaptation made by the same people who made Durarara, Baccano is more mystery-driven, but retains the fantastic elements and point-of-view shuffle of Durarara, while also the overall narrative taking place accross several different moments in time

- Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood: A shonen series with a huge cast that gets thoroughly explored and fleshed out, all while still having lots of awesome action sequences

- Space Brothers: It's quite long (99 episodes!), and tells the story of an average salaryman who finally decides to pursue the childhood dream he originally had given up on: being an astronaut. It's also about the protagonist wanting to be ahead of his littel brother, who actually is an astronaut about to go on a mission to the moon at the start of the series. Space Brothers is 99.9% grounded in reality, so it's quite different from all the crazy stuff you see in most other anime series.

Aside all that, I'd say No Game No Life is noteworthy simply for the gorgeous colors it uses. The episodes have their share of fanservice and anime/game references, so your mileage may vary, but the plot's actually somewhat decent: two humans are transported to a world where murder and theft are forbidden, and every dispute has to be solved through games.

BACCANO's only been mentioned like twice, it deserves more.

New York City the 1930s, a story about gangsters and Murder on the Orient Express extreme anime edition.

I see lot of good recommendation.
Don't know if this have been mentioned, but my pick is:

Le maison en petit cubes

It's short, emotional, great music and it's silent anime (the international ver., the Japanese version got narration, but it didn't add any value)

Tokyo Godfather

A group of homeless trying to find the parents of an abandoned baby, It's funny, and also feature some commentary regarding social issues in Japan

I don't watch Anime much at all but I loved Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop.

I need to try Attack on Titan in earnest. I tried watching it before bed a few times and I would just fall asleep. It's not the show's fault, I just keep putting it on at the wrong time.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Trigun
Hajime no Ippo
Steins;Gate

Death Note is my top recommendation. There isn't much physical action, but the way they present the mental exercises of the characters makes it feel like an action series.

Also L is one of the most fun characters ever.

Yes at you doing God's work Htown. Black Lagoon is literally my number one favorite anime of all time. Revy is fucking amazing. Rosetta will shoot your dick off. Balalaika is a BAB!! ... Yall better ask somebody.

All of my best recomendations have been mentioned. Though not Japanese, you have to give Legend of Korra a try. And also its prequel The Last Airbender. Both series have great production values, fight choreography, stories and characters. Airbender has 3 books (aka TV seasons) all cheap on Amazon. Korra has Book 1 out for cheap, and book 2 comes out on DVD/Blu on July 1st. Book 3 comes out sometime later this year for tv broadcast with a fourth and final one on slated for the future.

As a long time anime fan i'll give you my top anime in no order:
- Fairy tail 180 episode (still going)
- Naruto and Naruto Shippuuden 500 (still going)
- One Piece 700 (still going)
- Bleach
- D. Grey Man
- Soul Eater
- Hajime No Ippo (3 seasons) (boxing)
- Full meta alchmist brotherhood
- Death note
- Code Geases
- Hitman Reborn
- Darker than Black
- Major (if you like Baseball)
- Inuyasha
- Eyeshield 21 (american football)
- Slam Dunk (basketball)
- Kuroko No basket (basketball)
- Runouni Kenshin (Samurai)
- Fate/Zero and Fate Stay Night

I can't remember the rest anyway all the above are awesome animes because they are full of action no romance and boring drama

Korra looks good, but I found the writing being very underwhelming compared to its bigger and better sibling. I still despise the season one finale of Korra, and I couldn't continue with season two. :-/

But The Last Airbender is one of the best western animated shows around.

Dont listen to this man, Korra is shit. However, The last airbender is fantastic.

I hear this a lot on GAF, but...I just don't see it at all. I think LoK is very well-written. It's right on par with the original IMO. I can't for the life of me relate to the specific criticisms people have for this show. It's not perfect, but it's a great animated show and still waaay better written than your average anime.

People like the guy above me who say it's shit are being extremely hyperbolic about a show that just didn't click with them. The general consensus is way positive.

And it's also excellent for newcomers (especially if you've seen Airbender). My younger sister has extremely limited experience with anime and she loved it. When Part 2 comes out, I'm gonna try to get her to watch Titan with me. :)

Legendary Animes:

1. Gurren Lagann
2. Sword Art Online
3. Samurai Champloo
4. FLCL
5. Gundam Wing
6. Fate Stay Night
7. Neon Genesis Evangelion

My favorite Anime movies:

1. Princess Mononoke
2. Summer Wars
3. Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz

(CTRL + F)
No one's bringing up DBZ. You mentioned in your post that you've heard of it, but not that you watched it.
Dragon Ball Kai is the abridged version, since the original was loaded with filler. It's okay to just watch Kai, but DBZ shouldn't be overlooked.

Even if it's western, I'll also throw in a vote for Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is essentially an anime, and one of my favorites. I can't say the same about its sequel Korra, which isn't nearly as well-written as the original.

Don't pass up stuff that's old. Plenty of coherent and fantastic stuff from the past.

I personally think Death Note is garbage (yet super entertaining), but it's a good recommendation for someone who likes Attack on Titan because, well, it's by the same director. And it really really shows.

Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are pretty much quintessential entry level anime shows.

Also co-signing for, in no particular order, FLCL, Black Lagoon, Gurren Lagann, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (and 2nd GIG), Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Berserk, Baccano! (and Durarara!!), Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and more that I'm not thinking of right now. There are lots of other good anime series in different genres, of course, but these are some of the big boys. Anime 101, basically.

Also, MONSTER and Legend of the Galactic Heroes are two of the best shows ever made, regardless of medium. Might not necessarily be your speed, though.

I agree that Cowboy Bebop is the greatest anime of all time. Be sure to also check out some Gundam goodness - perhaps start by watching the movie Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz.

Dont listen to this man, Korra is shit. However, The last airbender is fantastic.

Korra is not shit.

I mean, it's not nearly as good as The Last Airbender, but shit?

Beware the Batman is shit.

Naruto Shippuden is shit.

Korra? Disappointing? Yes. Sometimes annoying? Yes. But it's still worth watching.

Legend of Korra would be better if it had more Revy from Black Lagoon

But it doesnt, so in turn, it's not that good.

#truthfacts

I have a list a mile long but I am going to stick to a few suggestions and I can provide a longer list when you are ready to go deeper down the rabbit hole.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

79466559.gif

There are 2 versions of the series. I prefer Brotherhood since it follows the manga and other things I don't want to get into now but the OG series is still beloved as well.

2. Cowboy Bebop

tumblr_n45gqnR4zU1rsv250o2_250.gif

A classic, and for good reason. If you love Wantanbe's work be sure to check out Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy (Comedy/action) as well.

3. Baccano!

No .gifs can summerize how batshit crazy this series gets. It is a lot of fun and one of my favorite animes. If you like it's type of storytelling you might enjoy Durarara!! as well which follows 3 High Schoolers and strange happenings around a Japanese town. It is a spiritual successor to Baccano!

Be sure to also check out some Gundam goodness - perhaps start by watching the movie Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz.
This is the worst advice because that OVA is useless unless you watched the series beforehand.

Though it's not completely in line with your tastes OP, I'm compelled to recommend Gurren Lagann.

Here's a synopsis from myanimelist:
In a far away future, mankind lives underground in huge caves, unknowing of a world above with a sky and stars.

In the small village of Jiha, Simon, a shy boy who works as a digger discovers a strange glowing object during excavation. The enterprising Kamina, a young man with a pair of rakish sunglasses and the passion of a firey sun, befriends Simon and forms a small band of brothers, the Gurren Brigade, to escape the village and break through the ceiling of the cave to reach the surface, which few believe exist.

The village elder won't hear of such foolishness and punishes the Brigade. However, when disaster strikes from the world above and the entire village is in jeopardy, it's up to Simon, Kamina, a girl with a big gun named Yoko, and the small yet sturdy robot, Lagann, to save the day.

The new friends journey to the world above and find that the surface is a harsh battlefield, and it's up to them to fight back against the rampaging Beastmen to turn the tide in the humans' favor!

It's more over the top and revolves around the Super Robot genre, but the charismatic characters and fight scenes will leave you itching for more. Or if you'd rather, there are two movies that retail the anime, only with new and improved animation.

Fate Zero
Death Note
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Gurren Lagann
Black Lagoon (both seaons)

Exttra time? Don't miss out the shonen stuff, its always fun even though childish sometimes.

Naruto is excellent (up until episode 137 of the first series, the second one is a hit and miss but if you are invested in the series its ok)
One Piece (it takes a long time to build up)

Oh... and

Hunter X Hunter is the shonen king at the moment.

Korra is not shit.

I mean, it's not nearly as good as The Last Airbender, but shit?

Beware the Batman is shit.

Naruto Shippuden is shit.

Korra? Disappointing? Yes. Sometimes annoying? Yes. But it's still worth watching.
I rather watch every episode of beware the batman then watch Korra.

Holy shit I did not expect this kind of response to this thread.

Seems like the most commonly recommended ones are

Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Death Note
Full Metal Alchemist / Brotherhood
Berserk
Trigun
Ghost in the Shell
Shigurui: Death Frenzy didn't get that many nods but I like the concept.

Seems like a solid start. Gonna have my work cut out for me watching all these.

I did watch Attack on Titan in dub. I mean I don't have anything to compare it to but I thought they did a great job. Good enough to get me into anime. You can send them my props.
You got a solid starter list there. I'm impressed by GAFs list making abilities, between this and the western animation thread (or whatever it was).

I wonder how OP will react to CBs episodic nature, after watching Titan.

You'll probably enjoy Deathnote but when it first came out I couldn't continue. Coming from the manga(comic) it seemed so ridiculous how the director made every move Kira did into some sort of action scene.

Having recently watched Brotherhood I would have to recommend watching regular FMA first. From what I remember from 10 years ago (wow it's been a while) it did a much better job establishing the brotherly bond between Ed and Al. Brotherhood has the better over-arching story however. So probably watch in that order to establish the characters then get the full story.

NARUTO
no don't actually watch that

I+hear+the+prices+are+unbelievable+_a4c7bdadfe85c8457499cb13c1921159.jpg

Some shows I like are Psycho-Pass, Persona 4: The Animation, Code Geass, Kill la Kill and No Game, No Life.

The first half of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is amazing, and that's all you need to watch.

I'm 32 and I was just thinking about how I'm going to finish my back log of anime Iv been saving for the past few years before I stumbled upon this thread.

It's nothing like attack on titan but I would like to recommend great teacher onizuka.

oh my god.....what's wrong with you man?

OP and anyone else reading, he's just trolling, don't watch this,

I don't think so? I recently got into anime after a good friend recommended Sword Art Online and I was immediately HOOKED! The premise is original and the plot is incredibly gripping; I was glued to the TV and managed to finish it in two days! I don't want to spoil anything; let's just say I can't stop delving into anime now to find a gem as bright as Sword Art Online. I have yet to find one, but I remain diligent.

I don't know who this Bebop fellow is, but I think I'll check it out. I'm not really a fan of wild west settings though. I'd rather go with a setting like Space Dandy. I started watching it the other day and I liked what I saw. A ragtag bunch going on adventures in space hunting down stuff to make a living. It's more interesting than cowboys to be frank. It's also really funny. It has a Hooters-type restaurant named BooBies. How hilarious is that? I was continuously laughing whenever it got brought up. You should check it out.
