Instead of telling you what to watch, I will instead give advice on surviving this hobby with your sanity intact.

1. Beware of anything set in a school that isn't called GTO.
2. Are little girls the main characters? Is it called Aza Mango Daioh? No? Then run.
3. Naruto and bleach are going to seem awesome... for about 50 or so eps each. Then, you will realize they are terrible.
4. Believe in the Watanabe... believe!
5. Almost anything from the 80 holds up way, way better than you expect it too. Akira, Berserk, GTO, ect.
6. Remember, people will recommend you garbage and say it's the best thing ever. Don't be mad, just accept this fandom's oppinions are all over the fuckin place, and move on.
7. Don't buy a goddamn hugging pillow.

Man Planetes gets recommended so much everywhere, yet I'm 8 episodes in and it doesn't really grab me at all. Usually I'm prone to binge watching shows but with that one I didn't get farther in like 3 weeks.

Mind you I do think it's pretty decent so far and if there's more good character progress it may get better. Until now though, ehh. Am mostly not a fan of some of the more comical character appearances, like the chief of the garbage facility and his flamboyant underling.

That said, please don't spoil me anything, I'm certainly gonna finish the series.

It's been a few years since I watched Planetes, but I remembered the 2nd half being really good and the last episode giving me a very satisfied smile. And I absolutely love that soundtrack.

I'm probably not going to add much to the table, but here goes. Everything below is an anime series, and except for FMA:B and Space Brothers, has 26 episodes.

- Cowboy Bebop: A show with a great overarching theme that ties stuff together. It has its share of action, comedy and drama, all in the right amount, and characters are also well-written

- Neon Genesis Evangelion: A humungous mecha anime that focuses more on the cast and their psyche than on over-the-top robot battles

- Wolf's Rain: A series about a distopian world that's about to end, and a group of wolves that go on a journey to find "paradise". Mostly character-driven. Note: This series had four OVAs that wrapped up the story, so you should look into watching them as well

- Umineko no naku no koro ni: Haven't finished watching this, but it was about a family visiting an island to settle inheritance issues and a series of grisly, inexplicable murders. There's a witch and magic involved, but the protagonist sets out to prove there's a far more mundane explanation for the seemingly impossible happenings

- Durarara: A crazy series that keeps jumping from the point of view of one character to the other in a realistic world ridden with supernatural entities, such as a modern-day dullahan or possessed swords, none of which are actually throwaway characters. Note: despite the supernatural stuff, this series is not primarily action-driven

- Baccano: Another anime adaptation made by the same people who made Durarara, Baccano is more mystery-driven, but retains the fantastic elements and point-of-view shuffle of Durarara, while also the overall narrative taking place accross several different moments in time

- Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood: A shonen series with a huge cast that gets thoroughly explored and fleshed out, all while still having lots of awesome action sequences

- Space Brothers: It's quite long (99 episodes!), and tells the story of an average salaryman who finally decides to pursue the childhood dream he originally had given up on: being an astronaut. It's also about the protagonist wanting to be ahead of his littel brother, who actually is an astronaut about to go on a mission to the moon at the start of the series. Space Brothers is 99.9% grounded in reality, so it's quite different from all the crazy stuff you see in most other anime series.

Aside all that, I'd say No Game No Life is noteworthy simply for the gorgeous colors it uses. The episodes have their share of fanservice and anime/game references, so your mileage may vary, but the plot's actually somewhat decent: two humans are transported to a world where murder and theft are forbidden, and every dispute has to be solved through games.

I need to try Attack on Titan in earnest. I tried watching it before bed a few times and I would just fall asleep. It's not the show's fault, I just keep putting it on at the wrong time.

I hear this a lot on GAF, but...I just don't see it at all. I think LoK is very well-written. It's right on par with the original IMO. I can't for the life of me relate to the specific criticisms people have for this show. It's not perfect, but it's a great animated show and still waaay better written than your average anime.

People like the guy above me who say it's shit are being extremely hyperbolic about a show that just didn't click with them. The general consensus is way positive.

And it's also excellent for newcomers (especially if you've seen Airbender). My younger sister has extremely limited experience with anime and she loved it. When Part 2 comes out, I'm gonna try to get her to watch Titan with me.

Dragon Ball Kai is the abridged version, since the original was loaded with filler. It's okay to just watch Kai, but DBZ shouldn't be overlooked.

Even if it's western, I'll also throw in a vote for Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is essentially an anime, and one of my favorites. I can't say the same about its sequel Korra, which isn't nearly as well-written as the original.

Don't pass up stuff that's old. Plenty of coherent and fantastic stuff from the past.

I personally think Death Note is garbage (yet super entertaining), but it's a good recommendation for someone who likes Attack on Titan because, well, it's by the same director. And it really really shows.

Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are pretty much quintessential entry level anime shows.

Also co-signing for, in no particular order, FLCL, Black Lagoon, Gurren Lagann, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (and 2nd GIG), Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Berserk, Baccano! (and Durarara!!), Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and more that I'm not thinking of right now. There are lots of other good anime series in different genres, of course, but these are some of the big boys. Anime 101, basically.

Also, MONSTER and Legend of the Galactic Heroes are two of the best shows ever made, regardless of medium. Might not necessarily be your speed, though.

I have a list a mile long but I am going to stick to a few suggestions and I can provide a longer list when you are ready to go deeper down the rabbit hole.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

There are 2 versions of the series. I prefer Brotherhood since it follows the manga and other things I don't want to get into now but the OG series is still beloved as well.

2. Cowboy Bebop

A classic, and for good reason. If you love Wantanbe's work be sure to check out Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy (Comedy/action) as well.

3. Baccano!

No .gifs can summerize how batshit crazy this series gets. It is a lot of fun and one of my favorite animes. If you like it's type of storytelling you might enjoy Durarara!! as well which follows 3 High Schoolers and strange happenings around a Japanese town. It is a spiritual successor to Baccano!

Here's a synopsis from myanimelist:

The village elder won't hear of such foolishness and punishes the Brigade. However, when disaster strikes from the world above and the entire village is in jeopardy, it's up to Simon, Kamina, a girl with a big gun named Yoko, and the small yet sturdy robot, Lagann, to save the day.

The new friends journey to the world above and find that the surface is a harsh battlefield, and it's up to them to fight back against the rampaging Beastmen to turn the tide in the humans' favor!

It's more over the top and revolves around the Super Robot genre, but the charismatic characters and fight scenes will leave you itching for more. Or if you'd rather, there are two movies that retail the anime, only with new and improved animation.

You'll probably enjoy Deathnote but when it first came out I couldn't continue. Coming from the manga(comic) it seemed so ridiculous how the director made every move Kira did into some sort of action scene.

Having recently watched Brotherhood I would have to recommend watching regular FMA first. From what I remember from 10 years ago (wow it's been a while) it did a much better job establishing the brotherly bond between Ed and Al. Brotherhood has the better over-arching story however. So probably watch in that order to establish the characters then get the full story.

I don't think so? I recently got into anime after a good friend recommended Sword Art Online and I was immediately HOOKED! The premise is original and the plot is incredibly gripping; I was glued to the TV and managed to finish it in two days! I don't want to spoil anything; let's just say I can't stop delving into anime now to find a gem as bright as Sword Art Online. I have yet to find one, but I remain diligent.

I don't know who this Bebop fellow is, but I think I'll check it out. I'm not really a fan of wild west settings though. I'd rather go with a setting like Space Dandy. I started watching it the other day and I liked what I saw. A ragtag bunch going on adventures in space hunting down stuff to make a living. It's more interesting than cowboys to be frank. It's also really funny. It has a Hooters-type restaurant named BooBies. How hilarious is that? I was continuously laughing whenever it got brought up. You should check it out.
