Destiny developer Bungie and Sony have been partners for longer than you think

I've said this on here before, but I think Destiny won't be as successful a multi-plat release for PS4 or in general as a release for the other platforms as Watch Dogs was. So far I was pretty much right about Watch Dog's success, and I almost certainly predicted it would be a huge success managing to easily meet, even exceed, Ubisoft's projections.

Not a chance.

After playing the alpha, it just confirmed to me that the game is going to be absolutely massive and the next big franchise in gaming.

Destiny's sales on PS4 will likely double watch dogs' PS4 sales for the first month and have much stronger legs throughout the holiday season.

I think you're going to be proven wrong. With Activision and Sony throwing money at marketing this beast of a game, Destiny is going to do VERY well.

Not a chance.

What he said.

So:
-Fuck you Respawn, we don't share PS4 details with you.
-Hello Bungie, what do you want to know?

The worst part is after refusing to share any PS4 details, Sony offered to help make Titanfall for the Vita instead. Respawn probably felt insulted and went straight to Microsoft lol.

How? They missed out entirely on Titanfall. Destiny is still coming to the Xbox One and 360.

Titanfall 2 will be on ps4, no biggie. It will most likely be a lot more thought out than one was also.

Not a chance.

I agree, Destiny is far better than WatchDogs. Just from the alpha reactions alone you can tell this game is going to be huge.

Why do you say that? Watch Dogs had a big marketing campaign that made up for some of its lackluster reviews and it sold well despite the vocal minority complaining about the downgrades, etc. Destiny will make Watch Dogs' marketing look pretty small in comparison, is by a studio with a huge following with this being their first appearance on PS4, the best-selling next-gen console, which also happens to be the version that they'll be marketing along with the PS3. On top of that, the exclusive content is a nice bonus and the alpha gave people a chance to try it out and turned a lot of doubters into fans (obviously some people still didn't like it) and the beta will solidify more people's feelings on the game and create a lot of hype leading into retail.

I don't know why it wouldn't be a success for the PS4 considering all of those factors. Now if I had a few friends wanting to play it on X1, then I'd consider it but most of my friends have PS4's now instead or both and wouldn't miss out on the extra content and any possible performance differences even if it's minor or non-existent because that stigma is already there.

Watch Dogs was propelled by its marketing yet Destiny has an even bigger marketing plan judging by Activision's budget, an alpha that already created hype, and a beta that will expose this game to a lot more people who might have been skeptical before. Either way, marketing sells and the PS4 is selling as well so...

It will do great on all platforms but I don't see how it WOULDN'T be a success for the PS4. I know I've played the alpha a lot more than Watch Dogs retail and that says a lot. I liked Watch Dogs but it was far from perfect and got repetitive with the MP being its saving grace, but the Destiny alpha kept me entertained with so little content for quite some time.

So why do you think that? Just curious since all you really said is that you were right on WD.

It's a smart move by Bungie. They already know the XB1/Halo fans will buy Destiny based on Bungie's reputation and its resemblance to Halo. They now need to win over the Sony fans who haven't experienced any of their games. I'm just wondering how much they can favor one side before alienating their original fanbase.

Exactly. They got both bases covered.

Honestly, if people are interested in the game and only have an X1, they'll get it on X1 despite these deals. It's kind of like the COD fans that say they're boycotting a certain COD for a particular reason but are then playing it right away. They talk a big game, but when it comes down to it, they'll buy it if they really want to play it or else they wouldn't be so upset about these deals and losing out on some content.

I think most people understand it's a business in the end. They're not favoring one side for no reason at all, but because of business the same way the X1 is favored by other developers due to deals with MS. I want to get Evolve on PC so am I mad about them favoring the X1? A little. Will I still get the game because it interests me? Of course.

I don't want to be rude but I always feel that this "same vision" thing is pure PR crap. For Sony and Microsoft. What do they even mean by same vision? We like your game so we are going to support it? Because the vision of Sony as a console was to simply make a more powerful console, almost like an update. How is that different from the vision they had on PS3? I don't get it.

Well, best of luck to them. Really want to try destiny.

Sony wanted to build a games machine,

Bungie make games.

MS wanted to build a multimedia home control centre.

Bungie didn't want to be involved in a multimedia home control centre.

There's your aligning visions.

It probably won't beat Watch Dogs' day one sales, but Destiny's likely got the longest legs of any game we've seen in years. It'll keep selling all the way until Destiny "2," whatever form that ends up taking.

you just can't what, learn to use another controller like toddlers can?

Don't be sour because people have a different opinion, I still game on the PS4, I just think the controller sucks. Think different? Good for you!

I think Destiny is going to have some ridiculous legs, maybe even WoW-ridiculous. Just the very brief bit I played in the Alpha got me all hot and bothered (and I'm usually a shithead PC-centric shooter snob).

I'll always wonder if they'll try to revisit some of the game designs they were shooting for in Halo before the MS buyout and consolification of that series. I still remember the impressive reveal...

I hope they have people already working on 2. Get rid of these last gen chains that cause us to get fewer bulletsponge enemies instead of a larger quantity of enemies as the "difficulty increase" method of choice because those weak ass consoles can't handle it.

Isn't there a growing anger among some of the more zealous X1 onwers that Bungie are abandoning them and the Xbox brand in favour of Sony? I recall some questions about this and them having to defend themselves and make it clear they hadn't abandoned the Xbox.

I wonder if that will play into how well it sells on X1, if people feel slighted over what they see as Bungie 'abandoning' their platform of choice, they could choose to skip the game altogether.

Seems stupid I know, but people are rarely rational, especially if they are deeply invested in one platform.

"Abandoning" them, lol. Like always, it's not about sharing with others, but instead lording over another about something you have and they don't.

It's definitely ridiculous, but then you have to remember those who get angry or upset these kinds of things aren't really thinking rationally in the first place.

Seeing as how they haven't even announced the beta dates for Xbox platforms yet, and PS4 just had an alpha, of course there is growing discontent from Xbox/Bungie fans.

Who are their most passionate fans? The guys who used to insult Bungie/Halo because they weren't on Playstation or the fans who've been with them for over 14+ years. I understand this though. They're winning over the fans who have never experience their games, never seen the bungie quality, level of polish. Just like many Xbox users have probably never experienced the greatness that is Naughty Dog and their games.

I'm not feeling betrayed though, just a peeved at the exclusivity that now stretches an entire year, exclusive maps etc. A lot of Bungie fans are Halo fans and will stay Halo fans. Unless they can get both consoles, they'll only get one, and especially after the Master Chief Collection announcement, many Halo fans will get an Xbox One and pick up Destiny for that system.

A big danger for Bungie is, their game comes out September. It'll be a hit on the PS4, it'll do well into the holiday. But what comes out in November for Xbox users? Newly remastered copies of the very games bungie made the last decade. So they need to remember this. Is there a Bungie/Halo fan out there that can't wait to try out the new Halo 2 Anniversary? What about a match of Team Slayer on the pit in Halo 3 but this time, with 1080p resolution and 60FPs and dedicated servers.

Were it not the Master Chief Collection and the greater refocus of 343 on the great competitive and arena shooter experience that Halo provided, I'd have probably gone PS4. That way at least I could experience Destiny in the best way possible. But there is no way I can pass up this set, and so I'll get an Xbox One and will purchase Destiny.

It won't harm Destiny or Bungie very much, will just be another game that sells more on Playstation 4 and will further reinforce it as the primary platform of the generation.

Unless militant Halo fans are a majority of the X1 install base, I'm not sure how big an effect they will have either.

With X1 install base quite small also, a drop in sales there might not be the biggest problem ....... PS4 sales are the biggest priority as the largest install base and I think the console where most multiplats have sold this year, cross gen games included.

My sentiments exactly.

Halo was to Xbox, what Mario is to Nintendo. I don't think I know a single person who was a gamer in real life who had an Xbox and never played or hated Halo. Anecdotal of course but it's their most important IP/Exclusive. If you didn't like Halo, why would you necessarily want an Xbox?

Also, the Xbox 360 version of TitanFall soundly outsells the Xbox One version, so it's more important to look at Xbox 360/Xbox One as a unified platform in a sense. Many Xbox 360 users are waiting till September for the cheapest price for Destiny, or November for whatever bundle Halo will get.

I don't think the HD Halo collection is going to be too different from other HD collections: its sales will be mostly front loaded, and then continue as a trickle with the inevitable discounts.

Destiny, on the other hand, is going have strong sales at the start, then have very long legs and probably only the rare discount, maybe even similar to Blizzard and Nintendo games if word of mouth is good enough.

Last month NPD numbers. As you can see, once the early sales are done, the 360 actually outsells the other platforms for the games that have been out a while.

Halo will have legs well into the holiday because of the Halo 5 beta in December. And then Halo 5 that comes out next year. Destiny, as good as it will be, needs to either really keep the RPG/MMO fans interested, otherwise, they'll have it tough to keep the PvP fans once Battlefield:Hardline, Call of duty:Advanced Warfare and Halo hit.

The beta will be their biggest test, not only because it'll be representative more of the final game play, but will give a wider range of players the ability to play and see if they like it.

Lolwut - their pillars were all aligned what?

Insert Battle Tendency reference here.

No huge surprises here if you know how long Destiny has been in development. Any AAA game released in the first year to year and a half of a console's lifespan had some sort of communication with the platform holder prior to the release of the console, especially in this day and age. A game like Destiny doesn't just spring up overnight.

Yeah, that's kind of how I read it- they saw the direction MS was going in (Kinect, TV TV TV, DRM,) and they saw the direction Sony was going in, and they liked Sony's direction better.

It outsells them in later months but it doesn't mean it will have better lifetime sales.
