PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | June 2014

I've been looking forward to properly joining VitaGAF, but the recent news has been really disheartening. :( There's still a number of games I want to play and have yet to get for my Vitas (I caved and got a 2000 as well, which I'm now regretting, sort of) but that Type-o was really disappointing to read, and the outlook now looks bleak for games of similar calibre coming in future. :(

At least I still have much of the PSP and PS1 back catalogue to explore.

Eh, don't worry about it. I reckon there will be plenty of JRPGs yet to come. It seems to be replacing the PS3 in japan as the PS3 starts to die down.

Square Enix will probably focus more on PS4 and 3DS but then again the PS4 is doing even worse than the Vita in Japan.

Its really not that bleak unless you are expecting western AAA games

Otherwise the lineup is solid all the way through 2015 and then some

Plus the Vita 2000 is so ridiculously sexy

it's sad that people like Shahid, Gio are getting the flak for the dismal state of Vita when these guys are really the ones in trying to get content to the platform.

I really hope more journalists grill the various SCE bosses about the Vita.

Why target the actual people who don't care about the Vita when we could target Shahid who had the nerves to hype up the Vita with promises?

Pretty sad huh?

I wouldn't worry too much unless SCEJ drops their current output of Vita support or, like DrROBschiz said, you're expecting Western AAA titles. It's still going to have a very strong catalogue complemented by indie releases (and the expected cross-buy titles). Also many rumours have pointed to various first-party PS4/PSV IP revivals being handed off to indie developers and we haven't seen that pan out yet.

If nothing is announced beyond Gravity Rush 2 though, that'd be a shame.

I do feel that Shahid, Gio and others not often mentioned are trying their best to get content. Yes, there are things I don't understand like what could have caused them to not at least market certain games... but I would think that those issues would be beyond their control.

At least Shahid is out there trying to engage the fans w things like #jrpgvita (the info is vital for him to show publishers that hey! there's interest) same with Gio and #BuildingtheList (so they know where to focus at)...

idk. maybe after being depressed the past week, I'm trying to be a little positive.

Also, honestly, if you're a JRPG or SRPG fan, and if you havent yet played the psp catalogue like you've said, there are enough games on the vita to last you for years.

hmm idk. the head of SCE WWS and the head of SCEA have, in separate interviews, said that they are lowering their first party support for the Vita.

and while revivals are good, Sony doesn't seem to have a good track record in porting them to the Vita. if they bothered to port them well, I think things would have been better. No, I am not talking about BL2. I'm talking about Jak&Daxter HD, GoW HD and more. These games could have been excellent gap fillers if they bothered to ensure they are of quality.

I'm not hoping for more Western releases.. that wasn't my point from Day One. But if Sony can't be bothered to give one of its platforms (an honestly well-designed piece of hardware w so much promise) some limelight on the biggest gaming event of the year (and instead of telling us the games they have lined up, they tell us they are winding down support), they aren't helping w public perception at all.

It's definitely beyond their control. They can only do their job with the limit being what Sony allows. They did their thing, Type-0 came up in third place on the list, and whatever happened between the higher ups with Sony and Square left it as PS4 and Xbox One. Idk how or why Sony couldn't get a Vita version in the mix seeing that Vita fans were the most vocal about the game, but once again, it's definitely not Shahid.

After reading the impressions of type-0, yeah I don't think we'll be missing out a lot.

yeap not blaming him for sure. just sad that he's getting most of the flak for it :(

For those unaware in Sorcery Saga there's a good weapon and shield customization, every weapon/shield starts with an effect slot that can be empty or filled with an effect(fire attack, resist to something, hp+30 and so on), the more you use that weapon/shield the more the slots(up to six in total) it gains, you can fill those slots fusing that weapon/shield with other weapons/shield to get their effects.
Fusing may upgrade it's attack/defense too(from sword +1 to sword + 2 fro example).
I made a weapon +7 that hits the front square + the other 3 adjacent squares(effects: 3 direction + impales 2) lol

Beware though, as all good roguelikes if you die you lose everything(if you didn't use an item that lets you keep your items)!

Well it's obvious that after e3, Type 0 and Yoshida the morale is really low, but give it time, many games are coming so the morale will be better, just give it time ;)

While Type 0 on Vita would have been an awesome news, i'm finding Type 0 PSP a little disappointing, i have never liked time management and huge parties and they are both there(13-14 characters to manage and level up!).

I would just play story missions but grinding in free time is necessary to level up enough for the next mission.

Other than that i like all the rest though.

IIRC Kagari in the Type 0 thread said that Sony tried to get Type 0 on Vita, but Square said no.
Square is the only one to blame if true.

EDIT:
double post :(

hmm idk. the head of SCE WWS and the head of SCEA have, in separate interviews, said that they are lowering their first party support for the Vita.
Yoshida has also made statements referring to continued RPG support being contingent or at least heavily connected to how OreShika does. Keep in mind that most of those quotes are referring to AAA support in a Western context (or at least how I read them).

These are remasters. I'm specifically referring to rumours that they're going to hand off IPs to indie developers and have them re-imagined for this generation.

Anyway, SCEA has always been a bit of a bust. At some point SCEE and SCEJ make up the bulk of the support.

On the bright side, if you want great Jrpgs then don't worry about the what ifs, look out for the great ones coming out already like atelier rorona plus.

One thing I've always found curious is Tecmo Koei's support of the Vita. It's lead me to playing more of their games as a result of being one of the few Japanese developers really making an effort to localise their games.

I'd guess their in-house engine is set up for easy porting and localization. The latter especially isn't common among Japanese devs, where the games often have to be reworked by the developers themselves to accommodate the translation.

Anyways, it occurs to me that Anime Expo is coming up at the start of July. If you remember last year it was actually way better for the Vita than E3, bringing us localization announcements for Danganronpa, Demon Gaze, and Sorcery Saga.

Will NISA have a panel at Anime Expo again?

I hope this doesn't sound like port begging, but I really hope NA gets this Ratchet Collection they announced a little bit ago, no confirmation on the NA version, just the EU and AU version, but i really hope we get it.

Same with Duke Nukem 3D vita, where did that ever go!

How many games were announced in Japan that are still in limbo / waiting for a pub this year? I can't remember many titles that can cross the ocean without someone throwing a hissy fit (lolisl##s or wh@re). I can't see them bringing over something like To Love Ru or a visual novel game based on an anime.

Tales of Hearts R too, apparently.

I know he Tweeted about that being on the list, but I don't think it's a TPP game. Sony published Borderlands 2 on Vita, TOHR is still Bandai Namco.

As I recall, Famitsu said the new Gravity Rush teaser was shown during a Vita trailer block, so they took it to be a Vita game.

This is true, but Yoshida's recent comments and those made by Japan Studio head Alan Becker (majority of the studio is working on PS4"), have me convinced it's not a Vita game anymore.

They want to make money from PSNow.
I'm sure that's also the reason why PS2 classics on Vita never happened.

I'm pretty sure Vita's hardware is the reason PS2 Classics aren't a thing on the machine.

uhhh

Gravity Rush 2 is most likely showing. Being revealed last year with a short teaser before a full reveal this year sounds about right. But with how vague that teaser was, the game could be on any platform :/ The others are just kind of wild guesses with no basis. 128GB though is probably the second most likeliest. Was X/X-2 HD announced at TGS? It was a whiiiile ago so I don't remember when it was shown off exactly. (with like one character model lol)

Tokyo Jungle 2 probably wouldn't happen unless sales were so stellar of both the mobile version and the PS3 version that they haaad to make a sequel. Though I wonder if they'd go with a different style of 'game' for a sequel.

X-HD was announced at TGS 2011. After Final Fantasy Type-0 HD's nonsense, XII clearly won't be for Vita.

As for Tokyo Jungle, the PS3 game was hugely successful. Sony knows no one buys PSM games.

Labyrinth Cross Blood, Hotaru no Nikki, Extetra and Mato Kurenai Yugekitai come to mind. Also a bunch of Neptunia and Otome games. (Way more if we were to start considering unreleased games.)

Hotaru no Nikki is quite likely to get over. There is almost no text in the entire game, only menus and tutorial stage which is about max 10 lines of text. It's also a really tough and charming game. Some of the puzzles are really hard. Mion is just too cute too.

Surprise surprise, another time GIOCORSI doesn't deliver...

I think that's backwards... GIOCORSI sets the bar.

I mean that Giocorsi made an announcement way too early about a patch. I know Shahid and Gicorsi are doing the best they can but when they do stuff like this, it isn't right. As professionals they should make comments/announcements when they KNOW it's done and ready for us fans.
Preemptive crap can only make fans more.
Just sayin'

His team is primarily for already existing 3rd party stuff, they only need to "persuade" and maybe help directly with the localization, Borderlands 2 for Vita was straight up commissioned and paid by Sony.

My 64gb is here!!!

14444881124_f43cffa600_o.jpg

So after the arrival of 64gb I finally got the space to try out the games that I usually do not keep on my card!

Behold: R&C: FFA

The game that was dissed on for having terrible graphics and frame rate drops.

I am glad I finally gave this game a chance. It looks serviceable on vita screen. And framerate also holds up too. No enemy count reduction. The online is dead though. lol

I have finished two planets and it is a lot of fun and frame rate is much better than J&D Collection. If only tim giant had more time or they could had simplified the graphics more to sustain atleast 30fps! Oh well! Glad I finally gave this game a chance.

did they patch the performance? I remember the game performed pretty bad when I first bought it.

R+C Collection NA was confirmed for July, Duke Nukem 3D is still coming afaik.

Played through the first few parts of Hotaru no Nikki. Love the art style and puzzle mechanics. You guide a firefly with the touch screen to get the Mion to interact with stuff. You also use the backtouch to control the dark firefly to do Ghost Trick kind of stuff.

6ewCYwy.jpg

X10O5zQ.jpg

You'll also find little seedlings hidden one per level. When you touch them, the screen glitches out.
SPug1HT.jpg

And Mion remembers an fragment of her past, living with her parents.
DZ49Q6d.jpg

I'm enjoying it a lot so far. There's a hell of a difficulty spike halfway through the second chapter, but man was it satisfying when I beat it.

Is my copy of Terraria borked or does the tutorial go no further than building walls? It keeps on asking me to cover everything when I already have.

Monster hunter frontier Vita gameplay(lol)

Well at least the port doesn't look bad.

I don't know why they're bothering with this kiss of death game. I hope Sony didn't spend a cent on it.

One thing I've always found curious is Tecmo Koei's support of the Vita. It's lead me to playing more of their games as a result of being one of the few Japanese developers really making an effort to localise their games.

Koei Tecmo is one of the smallest "big" publishers in Japan. Projects that other companies might not find worthwhile are okay for them.

I suspect a lot of their games use the same tech too. The newer Atelier games run on the Dynasty Warriors engine, which has been used on Vita so often that I imagine it's an easy port. The older Ateliers ran on PhyreEngine, which natively supports Vita.

Anyway, SCEA has always been a bit of a bust. At some point SCEE and SCEJ make up the bulk of the support.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the localized SCE branches develop games. They market the hardware, get third party support and publish SCE games, but I believe the greenlighting comes from WWS. If the head of WWS says you can expect less first party games (Yoshida considers externally developed titles like OreShika and Bloodborne to be first party) ...

.
The tutorial gets stuck unless you do exactly what it says when it says! Go tear them down and do them again.

Thanks for the encouraging comments, everyone. :) 99.99% of what I play are jrpgs, so yeah, I should just enjoy what's already available. I'm actually still working through the few remaining bits of my PSP UMD backlog (currently trying to finish Jeanne D'Arc)!

It's a pity the comments for Type-0 have been mixed. I'm looking forward to seeing the HD version anyway, but will probably get it from the Japanese PSN together with Grand Knights History after I finish some games.

I have Totori, Meruru etc... but for the PS3. :( I don't play the PS3 much actually, so I've been rather tempted to get the Plus versions on Vita as I don't think I'll finish the games otherwise.

This is primarily what I was referring to as you're more likely to hear about the Vita during the Sony press conferences at TGS and Gamescom.

I don't mind if Sony continues to fund collaborative development projects. Pretty clear their first party is all in on PS4 at this point.

Really hope the bolded is true and we start getting some clear messaging on things that may be coming.
We'll hear more, but the news might not be worth waiting for either..

I have a question. Are games like Demon's Souls, Bloodborne, Soul Sacrifice, Freedom Wars and such count as collaborative efforts with third parties, or plain first party titles?

First party published, but not developed by a 1st party studio...
Where are you going with this?

No, you just probably missed a sliver of wall or something when you were putting up the paneling, I assume... I remember people talking about this when the game first came out.
And MHFG certainly looks like a MH game to me. Not sure why people can't just be happy with the fact that they're getting something from their beloved franchise and support it in hopes that capcom might port something else if it does well...

They're very nice to play on your Vita, just wait for the next sale.
