PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | June 2014

Played through the first few parts of Hotaru no Nikki. Love the art style and puzzle mechanics. You guide a firefly with the touch screen to get the Mion to interact with stuff. You also use the backtouch to control the dark firefly to do Ghost Trick kind of stuff.

You'll also find little seedlings hidden one per level. When you touch them, the screen glitches out.

And Mion remembers an fragment of her past, living with her parents.

I'm enjoying it a lot so far. There's a hell of a difficulty spike halfway through the second chapter, but man was it satisfying when I beat it.

Just saw a youtuber post 2 parts of gameplay from this. Looks more interesting than I thought it would be. Thought the guy's game froze the first time the flashback thing happened. Love the art direction. Hope this game comes over.

Actually, now that the Vita has lost first party support, Sony better be pushing publishers for more localizations. Indies and Japanese devs seem to be the only hope of keeping this system alive now. I will be super pissed if the Gravity Daze sequel
(or rather, "continuation")
isn't on the Vita.

Edit: Oh, Top of page - Go hug a Vitabro/muffin/cat. Buy P4G and GR and SoulSacDelta.

I'm really impressed by SCEJA's post-launch support for Soul Sacrifice Delta. All of the DLCs (Toukiden, Wild Arms, additional pacts) are being released at the same time worldwide.

Did they delay the Japanese DLC schedule to make the worldwide release?

They've been great, they are the ones doing the actual localization for Oreshika too.

Did they delay the Japanese DLC schedule to make the worldwide release?

No. They planned ahead of time to do this worldwide DLC and patches ( it was one of the over 100 changes I believe). The only time we will get burned out is when there is a paid dlc - something that must downloaded through on PS Store.

Did they delay the Japanese DLC shedule to make the worldwide release?
Not that I know of. Everything seems to be on schedule.

Makes holding out for a Delta sale even harder!
SCEJA is involved with the best Vita exclusives as far as I'm concerned. Buy SSD, Freedom Wars, and Oreshika to show your support. :)

The Knight Blazer costume almost makes me want to switch my character to male.

Is my copy of Terraria borked or does the tutorial go no further than building walls? It keeps on asking me to cover everything when I already have.
The tutorial gets stuck unless you do exactly what it says when it says! Go tear them down and do them again.
No, you just probably missed a sliver of wall or something when you were putting up the paneling, I assume... I remember people talking about this when the game first came out.
Like the others said, you likely missed a teeny bit of the wall that needs coverage. I know this tripped me up, at first. What I did was made a small room, but extended the walls 2+ panels in all directions, to ensure everything was covered. Looked terrible, but hey it's just for training. You'll get the hang of it.
And MHFG certainly looks like a MH game to me. Not sure why people can't just be happy with the fact that they're getting something from their beloved franchise and support it in hopes that capcom might port something else if it does well...
I haven't seen the trailer yet, but I plan on buying it for the support alone. People have clamored over a MH for Vita, they better dang buy it when it comes out. Every copy counts!

First party published, but not developed by a 1st party studio...
Where are you going with this?

Well if Sony said they won't be, eh, devoting much of their game dev resource to Vita anymore, then I wonder what of the games done by third party, in collaboration of first party studios.

The reason I wondered about this is SCE Japan is more like pure publisher for Vita from the get-go. The only game I could think developed internally by SCE Japan is Hot Shot Golf.

Edit. And, so that really means what Yoshida said doesn't change a shit for SCE Japan's output (as a matter of fact they did say they'd localize Freedom Wars, right?) At least that's how I took it...

I really want to get SSD but I don't know if I really want more SS after sinking in at least a hundred hours into the original and getting the platinum.

Gravity Daze was internal.

Oh shit I forgot about that too lol. Well let's hope that's still in development, for Vita.

And Hot Shots isn't an internal effort. I think Clap Hanz is an external studio, their relationship with SCEJ is like Insomniac's with SCEA during the PS2-PS3 days.

They're very nice to play on your Vita, just wait for the next sale.

I've been checking the PS blog weekly exactly for this reason. :P

Really looking forward to Oreshika 2 as well, I need to get round to playing the demo(?) version of Oreshika 1 though I think my Japanese won't be up to it. :\ Freedom Wars sounds interesting, and I hope it does well. Hunting games aren't really my thing though.

Just found out that Freedom Wars has hoverboards! Awesome! This game is gonna be good.

I'm hoping that it won't be locked away through any funny business when it comes to the localisation.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the localized SCE branches develop games. They market the hardware, get third party support and publish SCE games, but I believe the greenlighting comes from WWS. If the head of WWS says you can expect less first party games (Yoshida considers externally developed titles like OreShika and Bloodborne to be first party) ...
But the publishing side is the one that controls the money, and is the one that's responsible for selling the games and the one that deals with their success or failure. Suggesting that they're not directly involved in what gets funded, sitting there looking their empty publishing roadmap for the next few years with crossed fingers awaiting the whims of Yoshida, is absurd.

Gio Corsi is the head of Sony Computer Entertainment America's Third Party Productions group. This is a division of SCEA devoted to localizing, porting and even developing content that otherwise wouldn't be released on PlayStation. Last August, Gio sent out an invite to suggestions with the #BuildingTheList Twitter campaign. To date the group has publicly been involved with Borderlands 2 PS Vita and the Grim Fandango re-release.

Oh cool, thanks!

D:
Me too. Looks like a much more practical way of getting around (and more visually appealing than the running animation).

Last night I was reading IGN's Mind Zero review and while I do feel like the reviewer finished the game, I feel like he was playing a different game altogether:

Traversing Mind Zero’s dark and creepy dungeons is fun, thanks to puzzle-rich levels and easy-to-navigate corridors. I liked that I never knew what was around the next corner, whether it be a warp point that would send me to a far-flung corner of a dungeon, or a tough monster standing between me and the nearest exit. Stumbling upon randomly placed treasure chests rewarded my trepidation with super-rare items, and I even approved of the upticking difficulty level in dungeon layouts, as it kept me consistently challenged for its 40 hours. I did start to get bored with the myriad sidequests that had me trudging back through the same dungeons over and over again (and long loading times between levels didn’t help), but using warp points and a fast-forward button during random enemy encounters made getting through these a lot easier.

I like the game, but it's not that exciting. Has he never played a DRPG before? Also, he calls the developer "MindDiv", I giggled a little.

The other versions of Frontier have IP checks, and block anyone not in Japan. I hope you live in Japan or are content with just keeping it as a shelf piece or something ...

And MHFG certainly looks like a MH game to me. Not sure why people can't just be happy with the fact that they're getting something from their beloved franchise and support it in hopes that capcom might port something else if it does well...

When I called it a kiss of death game, I kind of meant it. Frontier is only released on the platforms (PC, 360, PS3, Wii U, and Vita) that don't get real Monster Hunter games. That makes sense, because if you can pay a one time fee, why would you keep a monthly Frontier subscription? (Yes, I realize that MH/Dos/Tri had monthly online fees in JP, but that era seems to be over now with 4)

That's besides the point even if it's successful, that doesn't really mean Capcom proper will do more on the platform. Frontier is handled by Capcom Online Games, the branch of the company that's completely separated from the group that makes Resident Evil/Basara/Monster Hunter/etc. It's the group of the company behind things like Dragon's Dogma Quest and Breath of Fire 6 ...

I don't think it'll do well either. Frontier doesn't really do well on anything, and I can't see the handheld audience going gaga over a subscription based always online MMO on a device that isn't always online.

I'm just being snarky for the sake of being snarky, but given the amount of games SCEA has sent to die in the last four years, does that really sound all that far-fetched to you? They're clearly being given games they don't want.

Hello and welcome all!

I've been following VitaGAF (BestGAF) for a while now but only recently decided to register.

As I am pretty much in love with the device, I am having trouble with deciding what to play, not to mention finishing games :( And I have bought only a few titles, the PS+ delivery is killing it. All I do is try new games, get rid of some old ones during the process (to free some storage) - ending up playing some good, old games I feel comfortable with (Super Sturdust, Spelunky etc.). The ones I managed to finish are Guacamelee and The Walking Dead S1.

Any tips how to tackle that? I know there are many people on GAF trying to deal with their backlog - the case seems similiar, apart from that I prety much only play on Vita nowadays.

PS Would love to play Okami on my Vita.

Welcome to GAF zawii, nice to see another VitaGAFer around here :)

For my backlog I personally try to limit it to one bigger title (usually a retail release) and one or two smaller downloadable titles at once per platform. I tend to get more things done quicker when I take the minimalist approach and focus on less software and get more done, rather than have a bunch of big titles at once, get overwhelmed and most likely not get far in any of them.

Thanks for the impressions and screenshots. I've had my eye on it since it was announced, really hope it ends up coming over to the West.

Yeah. I'm really happy they're supporting it post-launch a bunch with free DLC like they did vanilla Soul Sacrifice.

Have you guys read that FTL will not come to the Vita? I've bought into the hype when it came out for the iPad, but since then I never "got" the game.

It wouldn't work well on the Vita anyway. They would have to seriously dumb it down to fit all the touchscreen UI into a 5 inch screen.

I strongly recommend getting the iPad version, it is very well made and I find it even more enjoyable than the original.

Oh, how do I explain this... I bought the game, I've played a bit but I never "got" what it's all about. Either it didn't click or it's just not my kind of game.

I just realized that maybe Sony's definition of AAA doesn't include Gravity Rush because it's not western and simply doesn't cost that much or require 500 studios to make... it would gel with most media and gamers definitions of AAA, which allows 99% of Vita games, exclusive or otherwise, to not count as real games worth playing.

I am enjoying Hotari no Nikki and its special blend of Mion cuteness and the many many deaths xD I love the old flimsy look of her and the shadows the firefly is making. This image also cracked me up first time I saw it:

Welcome!

I can't really say I have a solution for you, it's something that I struggle with daily... If something grabs me I'll stick with it, but I do a lot of bouncing around. It's the Vita curse... I have too many games to play and can't ever stick with one...

#vitahasnogames?

It's kind of cute how the flashbacks are done in a 16bit style while the game doesn't have that style.

At least it seems they've done it this way going by those screens that have been posted here.

This game looks top drawer. I'd pick it up were it available in the US store.
