"Lolwut" indeed, because you don't know what you are talking about.

X-Factor does not speed up (reduce) hitstun or blockstun duration, so the game becomes faster and everything becomes safer. It's not a case of everything becoming faster. That would make no difference. Speeding things up X-Factor style means that landing lag would be reduced while shield stun remains the same.

Thanks for learning.
Goddamnit, you're right. It's been too long since I've played UMvC3.

Part 1
Part 2

It's hard to describe the feeling I had when I finally picked up a Wii U Pro Controller to play Smash Bros for Wii U. I waited in line for close to 3 hours. Fuck that, I've been following the game religiously for the last 365 days! 9 fucking threads on NeoGAF! I had so much shit I wanted to try. A combination of excitement, exhaustion and adrenaline. It was kinda nerve racking, honestly.

The rep told me I'd be able to play 1 v 1 with my friend, in two, 2 minute matches. Unfortunately, we couldn't turn off items. That's better than the one match, 4 player FFA I was expecting! Having just played Greninja on 3DS, I said fuck it and decided to go with my Brawl main, Marth. Went straight to Battlefield, of course. My friend chose Mega Man.

From my two minutes with Marth, he felt weird. I had been playing plenty of Brawl going into that day, and I can assure you Marth does not play like Brawl Marth. He certainly doesn't play like Melee Marth. There is something very distinct about Smash 4 Marth that he doesn't share with Brawl Marth or Melee Marth.

My friends, Marth is bad in Smash 4.

Of course, I'm going off 2 minutes of playing him in a day -200 build, so I'm hoping things change, but as they stand now... they fucked the poor guy. A lot has already been explained since last week, but I'll touch on a couple of things that stood out to me.

His animations look different. They actually look "better". His nair, fair and bair in particular are way more fluid than they were in Melee and Brawl. It's pretty as fuck... but they also feel slower as a result. Try to see it in this GIF, but I'm telling you, if you're a Marth player, you'd feel it:

smash4nairfairpbsd4.gif

As a result of this, you can't short hop double fair anymore. However, Marth's bair is still just as good as it's ever been, if not better. I killed Megaman off the side with a tippered bair at 86%.

Well, they nerfed his aerials, what about his grabs?

So bad. So, so bad :(

Down throw pops your opponent straight up. I was able to down throw and follow up with some up airs, but it's certainly not a true combo. Same deal with up throw. Apparently that kills now? Meh.

Fthrow and back throw seem completely useless. Grab release doesn't lead to fuck all. So yeah, Marth's grabs kinda suck.

His tilts and smashes felt pretty similar to Brawl, honestly. There weren't any differences that were immediately apparent like his aerials. Again, hard to say in only two minutes, though. I've heard some say his sword is even shorter in Smash 4. I didn't notice that.

I tried his taunts. All three look the same and use the same sound clip as Brawl. Meh.

It went to sudden death, as I was just testing stuff, and I won with the classic Marth up B OUTTA NOWHERE to the top platform on battlefield :)

Before I move onto the second match, I want to take a step back and talk about how the game felt in general. One of the earliest comments Sakurai had about the game was that the game speed would fall somewhere between Melee and Brawl. After playing it for a little, I feel like that comment is half true.

Basically, when he says halfway between Melee and Brawl, he meant halfway between Brawl and Melee being played with no l cancelling, no wavedashing, dash dancing, ledge cancelling... you get the picture. The game feels generally faster than Brawl. It felt like everything was heavier, and characters were falling faster. There seemed to be more hitstun than Brawl. I was able to connect multiple tilts into aerials, though the lack of throws being combo moves hurt.

HOWEVER, there is a lot of aerial lag. Worse aerial lag than Brawl. This may be a character dependent thing, but with Marth especially, my brain was jumping from "Oh, I couldn't do that in Brawl! Nice." to "Oh god, even Brawl isn't that bad. Lame."

BACK TO THE MATCHES

Next match I was ready to choose a newcomer, but after all that time, and after having just played Marth (and honestly not getting all that much out of the two minutes I was allowed) I said fuck it and chose Pikachu. I didn't think it would be that fun trying to get a grasp of a new character (AND the new mechanics) in only two minutes. I played a lot of Pikachu in Brawl, so I was looking forward to testing him out. My friend decided to go with Greninja and chose the Punch Out Boxing Ring stage.

Pikachu felt a lot better than Marth. I feel like I was able to connect with Brawl Pikachu because he was not only a fast character, but his moves were quick and powerful too. Smash 4 Pikachu felt a lot like Brawl Pikachu, which I think is a good thing.

First, I tried some of the Brawl "advanced techniques". Quick attack cancel? Gone. Down throw chain grab? Gone. F throw chain grab? Gone. =(

The hit lag on the down smash seems to be gone, or it was toned down a lot. I don't know if the move itself was faster, but it sure felt faster thanks to that tweak. F smash also seems stronger and faster, and I used it to kill Greninja twice at <100%. Then again, Boxing Ring is a walk off stage, but the move is still clearly strong. Dair is still a kill move too.

His special moves feel basically the same as Brawl. One thing I noticed is you can actually stand/fight on the lights high above the boxing ring. It's solid. However, Pikachu's down b goes through it. So I'm thinking Thunder might actually go through platforms in Smash 4. Thunder was usually used as an edge guard technique in Brawl, so I'm not sure how useful it would be in the middle of the stage, but someone will think of something. I hear down smash actually sets you up for a down b (which acts as a spike) sometimes... that could be neat. I never tried it D=

Finally, the most hype part of my play time with Smash 4. Up tilt.

Up tilt.

THE CROWD WENT WILD. THE NINTENDO REP DID TOO.

THAT'S RIGHT LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, A KILL COMBO. IN A SMASH BROS GAME THAT IS NOT MELEE OR 64.

*ahem*

My brief time with Smash 4 had come to an end. I got some sweet freebies: Smash Bros stickers, pins and an awesome Wii U lanyard:

(not my pic)

I could have waited another 3 hours to play again, but decided not to because that's fucking crazy.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS:

I've managed to come out of E3 week even more hyped for Smash 4 than I could have ever imagined. Coming off of the roller coaster of emotions that was Brawl pre-release hype, it was really nice to actually get my hands on the game pre-launch. It allows me to temper my expectations.

This game is not Melee 2.0. I am 99% sure it will not be a better game than Melee. But that's ok. It doesn't have to be.

It just has to be better than Brawl.

After playing this short demo, I have hope that it will be. Even with all the crap like nerfed grab game, hella aerial lag and weird ledge grab mechanics, the game just felt... fun. It felt nice. It felt smooth. I definitely didn't get that "Oh no... OH NO" feeling I got when I first picked up Brawl.

And that, my friends... That's a good thing.

To be continued...

...Right now.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the 3DS game. I thought it would control like fucking garbage and I'd get carpal tunnel from playing it for too long, but nope. It felt good. It played surprisingly well. I'm... hyped? I wasn't that excited for 3DS version, but now I'm hype as fuck? I can't wait til October 3rd!

Wait, I really can't wait til October 3rd.

Lol, I've been saying this game had combos.

During my time at Best Buy, I witnessed two really nice ones from Greninja, and Rosalina who personally gave me trouble.

Probably the best set of impressions I've read about the game. There's probably been more dryly informative, but none with so much narrative flair. Thanks for doing this!

Thanks for the detailed impressions, Anthony. Your statements about the feel of the game and how it just plays good, even if it's not Melee, mirror the statements made on this week's IGN Nintendo podcast.

WHAT DID THEY DO TO MY MARF GODDAMNIT NOT LIKE THIS

;___________:

Translation: Great write up man. I was very entertained. But seriously, don't give me any bullshit about "hurr marf too good, he deserved it" when his character archetype is that of the graceful fencer. When you take away the grace, what's the fucking point?

I get the feeling marth wont be as bad in teh final prodct.

Amazing impressions Anthony. Wish we could of seen the kill combo. :P

Man I cant wait to start playing with you guys.

Wait a second... You do realize that you purchased a Japanese 3DS system, right? That means you can get the game September 13th since it comes out earlier in Japan.

Or did you possibly buy a Japanese 3DS by mistake, not knowing that it is region locked and that it can only play Japanese games?

Just making sure here. :)

That's why he said he couldn't wait until October 3rd.

I will play Marth regardless of his tier. I played Captain Falcon in Brawl, after all.

Same here.

I mained Falcon since 64, and did the same till Brawl even though Sakurai neutered him that game (I split between him and Sonic). Whether or not they get better or worse I will probably stick with them.

Of course I play and main a few other characters as well, but I never decide who I want based off tier list. That is bitchmade. Fuck Marth anyway, dude was always a top character.

It's a bummer reading the changes to Marth. I'm hoping that there will be a lot of changes made to character balance and some of the game wide systems before release, like making Bowser's ability to cancel dash with crouch possible for every character. I really enjoy playing as Marth and I will be trying to use him regardless of what people think of him.

I'm kind of nervous about the possibility of Marth remaining this bad in the final game, but considering my most-used characters in Smash besides him thus far are Link, Samus and Ganondorf, I can't really complain. If anything, low-mid tier will be an upgrade for me.

Marth nerfs were pretty self evident watching the streams and vids. Fair can no longer be done twice in a short hop, super punishable now too, he looks a lot slower and floatier, and his grab got even worse from brawl. People have been saying "oh he's just a ground character now!" But you can't tell me that with a strait face as they severely nerfed huge aspects too his ground game too! Like really... and it isn't like he got much to compensate in other areas to make up for his absolutely gutted old tool set... In fact he didn't get much noticeable buffs at all! (Nair and Bair better from impressions however)

Pretty much old news and bizzare as marth was never really "top" just always simply good

i don't know enough about the technical specifics to really add to this discussion, but i do remember seeing a video/reading somewhere this his counter has been greatly improved

One buff Marth got was his counter, that thing is RIDICULOUS now. Sends you flying at 0% and iirc I saw it kill around 50% in a video. I don't know what that'll mean for him over all but it's certainly much appreciated.

edit: lol ninja'd

Or they could just buff other characters instead

Yeah always weird when people are praising huge nerfs. Like I could understand fixing a few broken aspects but when a character gets this changed it looks far beyond a simple nerf

And why ask for a character to play and feel worse when making another play and feel better works just as well and is generally better for everyone involved

Edit: ah yes I did hear about the counter stuff. The thing with that is counter is highly situational and is VERY unsafe. You can't run a character on a gimmick like that at all

Or they could just buff other characters instead

It's not about other characters being competitive. It's about the fact that they consistently dominate the game. If they stay good and other characters are brought up to their level, people will still play them. See Project M.

I specifically want the spacies and Marth to not be competitive. I want them to be bottom tier. I want nobody to play them, and if they do, I want them to be obliterated. I want a competitive scene that is devoid of these characters, because their mere presence completely destroys any enthusiasm I have for competitive Smash.

Yes, this is entirely out of spite. My hatred for Marth and the spacies knows no bounds.

My number 1 wish for smash 4(excluding playable characters, aka mewtwo :P) is an option to have the c stick perform the tilt moves. its hard to pull off those tilt moves in the heat of battle, handicaps me by 4 moves :( pls sakurai
