Anyone else surprised no system price drops for the 360 and PS3 at E3?

I personally thought we'd see one for PS3. Timing just feels like it would have been right. X360 not getting one I can kind of understand, because they want the focus to be on the XONE price drop.

But damn, what is it eight/nine years in for these systems and neither has a 99$ model on the market still. That's gotta be some new industry precedent, right?

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
I wonder if these systems are still too expensive to manufacture.

There's no reason to. The platforms are still selling relatively well considering their age and price point. The profit margins are likely damn good at the current price point. And it doesn't make sense to undercut your future investment by basically making your old platform an impulse purchase in comparison.

Considering how quickly sales are dropping for last gen hardware, I am surprised although perhaps later in the year is a better time for a pricedrop, maybe right before the holidays?

Sony has the potential to sell millions more PS3's in the US considering the large gulf between it and the 360's install base domestically. They really need to drop the price if they want to sell more. Perhaps they don't though?

Let's hope at Gamescom they make a move, sony did announce a Vita price decrease at gamescom last year, so who knows.

Was hoping for one since I plan on buying a second ps3 on Black Friday. Now I'm tempted with a second ps4 (destiny bundle)

Not really. They're trying to sell new consoles and a $250 PS3 vs a $399 PS4 makes the new console much more enticing. A $150 PS3 might make someone think twice.

7 years in and still selling decent. Not too surprising since the libraries are pretty huge at this point and people don't feel rushed to go next gen

yet

Way better value at the momnent to buy a last gen console since there still isn't a reason to upgrade yet and probably won't be one until next year. There are tons of games worth playing on last gen that destroy anything of quality on these new consoles and most gamers havn't played everything of value yet. Games are also extremely cheape now.

We are still in a transition period (much longer than previous generations). This is primarily because neither MS nor Sony has produced enough quality content to justify their next gen consoles even a year after release. After the disappointment of e3 for games released this year, I'd still equate anyone who picks up a PS4/XB1 console in 2014 as an early adopter.

Still don't have a ps3 or 360 because of their prices. Too late for me now though, won't be able to afford one for the next few years.

I was a little surprised although I guess I figured it would be quietly announced before the show.

I guess both are probably decent revenue stream by this point but both feel to me like they need lower price next to their new counterparts.

I was hoping there would be, but they both still sell pretty well for how old they are so neither Sony nor Microsoft had any real reason to. Maybe we'll see one closer to the holidays.

I had my fingers crossed for a PS3 price drop. My (second) PS3 started freezing up a few months ago, and I can't get Sony to process my repair request. All I really want is a $200 system that I can put an SSD into without needing to buy an extra piece of hardware.

not surprised. too many poors still playing their old consoles and not upgrading. no reason to reduce price.

If these "poors" already own 7th-gen consoles, they wouldn't be the reason behind a price drop, or lack thereof.

I've never owned a PS3 and I've been waiting forever for the price to go down. I'm hoping for some kind of Black Friday deal I can take advantage of (because I need to acquire one before Persona 5 comes out).

Errm most of the great games on PS360 are on PS4/XB1 too...

Anyway, yea I'm a little surprised about it to be honest, I expected both consoles to price drop.

Surprised for the 360 but the PS3.. not really. Sony wants to regain as much as possible from the huge losses so as long as it sells decently they will keep it this way. Cross gen titles, sport games and these last few exclusives help to keep a little interest. I guess they'll apply a cut price around the release of Persona 5.

they are killing these platforms in the west a couple of years in advance after having them underperform for the last 3 years because of high price points.

That's sad.

I don't own either next gen system and I'm not poor. I just don't have a reason yet. I'm waiting on Sunset Overdrive and Halo. Also, I am still debating on whether or not the PS4 is going to be my main system.

Last few NPDs beg to differ.
Yeah, I was thinking about that. Maybe it's still good enough for them, but I do imagine a price drop is needed.

Well, they also probably don't see much value in announcing one at E3, the press won't give a crap relative to new games for new consoles, and retailers are already carrying PS3/360 so they don't need to be double convinced.

Annoyed me, I need to replace my 360. Thing is falling apart, but I won't touch another one unless it comes down to around $150 with a HDD.

Yes, though I think it's a game of chicken and neither manufacturer wants to lose money on stuff that still sells, even at a lower rate, and especially while they're running thin margins on the new hardware and software hasn't really lit the world on fire, saleswise for either new console. Still a chance for price drops closer to the holiday season.

That's my thought.

Sure, they make a profit but I don't think they are raking it in, the margins are probably okay but with another price cut it might not be so good. PS3 has been stuck at the same manufacturing process through two slims so they can't exactly squeeze much out after more price cuts without that changing and the same likely goes for Xbox 360.

They simply aren't that cheap to produce. The 7th gen systems share a lot of components with 8th gen systems (HDD, Blu-Ray), so it's not surprising that the price difference between them isn't huge. Arguably, the PS4 and XBOne are better engineered to price reduce over time with a single SoC, single commodity memory pool, and potential to drop the optical drive for digital-only SKUs.

My bet is that they are still too expensive to manufacture. These IBM cpus don't seem to shrink much anymore. The PS360 was a strange generation on that front, stagnated in price way too much over long periods of time.

Yeah, but soon we should hear about it. They have get the cheaper holiday bundles.

The Ps3 sold 30K in May according to leaked NPD numbers. They suck hardcore.

What type of 360 do you have? You could always just get a arcade model and put your hard drive in it.

But I think it's best to wait until holidays. Microsoft might put out a good 360 bundle.
