DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

I've had mine since launch and they still look new. The bar code on the back of my controller starts with 2. Does this mean I have the 2nd revision?

No.

If anything there may be a difference between the

It's the last few characters of the number above Made in China on the back. Even this is speculation.

Well I now noticed that my left thumb stick is going through some wear and tear (but not too badly). Wonder how long it's been like that.
thank goodness I have another controller

What's the process of sending it back like?

I went through Sony's customer support live chat about 2 weeks ago. It took about a half hour, they gave me a case number and I just had to pay shipping to send them my controller.

I just received an email this morning that the fixed one is on it's way back so I should have it next week. Not sure if it will be a new controller or the same one with new sticks.

Mine did not come in retail packaging but definitely seemed to be new. It even had the plastic over the dpad and buttons to peel off.

If you have played enough with your original DS4, you might notice how the newer ones are better constructed. The buttons are even different for example. They are more matte and the symbols no longer feel raised off of the button. Small details.

My left stick isn't worn all the way yet, but I went ahead and just ordered the xb1 sticks off Amazon. If I don't like them, I'll just put the stock ones back in and send the controller to Sony once it wears completely.

Would you guys recommend something like this?

Good amazon reviews, but only a few of them so not sure.

Also these are an option: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GOOSV98/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Never thought I'd have to buy condoms for thumbsticks.

in my experience, covers tend to to loosen over time and they eventually start slipping off during gameplay.

I would have ordered a sack of XB1 and DS4 sticks. this way you would have many spares to choose from and no need to spend money on shipping back to sony for 1 measly stick.

I think I would be worried about those sticks turning a dirty yellowish color over time. At least my gamecube sticks don't look quite as fair as they used to.

Thank god I got a 2 year warranty on my PS4, my replacement PS4 controller's thumb sticks have once again worn out, I'll need another replacement now.

This stick issue is the only real problem I have with my PS4. Both left sticks are wearing on my 2 pads. They have been since week 3, however, I've never bothered with replacing them. I've continued to use them and I've had my PS4 since UK release. It's not really caused me any great issues while gaming.

For people who are having these issues, what games do you normally play?

I saw a display console at a Target with sticks that looked like they had been chewed off. Been playing my new PS4 and can't imagine causing that damage to it.

The left stick on my DS4 started to peel after a week, but only recently started to tear, so i bought these X1 replacement sticks-

They work really well. Concave design with the DS4's stick resistance. Perfect.

We have four DS4 here, all of them have the stick teared away but the most concerning thing is the broken R2. I hope they fix it soon.

I had ordered XB1 sticks, but since someone said their replacement from Sony seemed to be of higher quality, I cancelled it and am just going to send it to Sony once the stick tears. If the next one turns out bad I'll just order the XB1 sticks again.

Didn't even know you could do that. I'm already on my 2nd DS4. If the rubber starts wearing away on this one as well I'm just gonna do what you did.

How hard was it to pull everything apart and install the sticks?

I must have been real lucky, because I've put in hundreds and hundreds (thousands?) of hours on my DS4 and it looks like brand new.

It was easy, you just take out the 4 screws on the back of the controller, and another on the main board, making sure to un-clip the ribbons for the touchpad and the light-bar. The hardest part is actually getting the controller open, i used a credit card to ease it open, then a penny to split it open at various points.

Here's a video guide- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXyoH50xteE

- takes about 5-7 min
- the Xbone sticks don't get slick when playing for long periods
- textured edges are much more grippy than stock
- you can order a bunch of sticks for the same price that you spend on shipping a controller back to Sony

The left stick has been peeling and actually felt slippery since launch. It finally started to tear last month. I contacted Sony who advised a replacement controller will be given. Just shipped it off.

I don't have a second DS4 and from reading this thread it seems like the replacement will also wear in the same way. Really frustrating but I needed to get it sorted before the last of us comes out.

i would go ahead and order up a few replacement sticks anyway. 5-8 years of use out of a controller is a long time, my 360 sticks have been replaced a few times already.

if it comes to that I will but I have never had to replace a stick on any of my controllers.

I had a Halo 3 360 and the controller sticks were still good as new as of last month. I had a PS3 from around the launch of Uncharted 2 and the sticks are still good as new.

I play a lot of games but maybe I am just not hard on my sticks??

I don't think its a good idea to just buy replacements when I never had needed to in the past.

If there is indeed a fault in the rubber I would like to know so I can get it exchanged fixed whatever.

I agree with your approach.

What's the serial number on your controller?

If you posted a high res photo of the stick rubber I think we could probably make a good guess as whether it's the bad batch soft rubber or the newer stuff.

The serial number on my DS4 starts with a 1. I am at work so I can't take a photo right now. It seems to match the rubber on the newer controllers though.

from what I could tell.

I've never needed to replace a controller in the past either, and very soon I'll be moving onto my 3rd Dualshock 4 controller. It seems to be quite a common problem, so just be wary.

My new controller just arrived. Sticks feel much better. I would def recommend sending it back in if your sticks are flaking. Whole process took a little under 3 weeks from shipment to delivery.

What do they feel like now? Has the material been completely changed?
The rubber feels much harder, a lot less gummy and soft. I don't remember how they felt when I got them at launch, but by the feel of these I don't expect them to peel anytime soon.

Also my controller before felt loosely put together, hard to explain but it had some give, and made a creaking sound if you applied pressure in a certain way. This one is sturdy and feels right. Also came with plastic covering the buttons like new.

I recently got a replacement where the material felt much harder than the previous. However, they soon started flaking also. They've stopped now, but I'm keeping an eye on them.

I think I may just switch my analog sticks on my DS4 to XB1 sticks, I know I could read back through the pages, but anyone that has done it, how do you like it? Any problems or anything?

I've done it, they work great. The X1 sticks are a little small for my liking, but the build quality and concave design make them better than the stock DS4 sticks, imo. Having the X1 sticks on my DS4 makes me wish the X1 controller had the same stick resistance of the DS4.

Here's my DS4 from a few pages back-

Oh, and here's a guide to fitting them yourself-
