I'm playing the first game right now and the setting is amazing. The design of the world itself reminds me of the Baten Kaitos games, which also had an incredibly creative setting. But Xenoblade X's setting (to me) seems disappointing compared to those. It has a great looking creative planet that it takes place on, but the actual setting is our current universe instead of a fantasy setting. It's a unique premise and still seems neat of course, but I can't help but feel that it's a step away from the atmosphere of the world of Xenoblade. It looks less like the difference between numbered Final Fantasy game settings and more like a complete genre change.
I'd say that Xenoblade X's world has about as much in common with ours as Xenogears and Xenosaga's worlds.
Games that take place "far in the future" where the Earth and its civilizations don't resemble anything like current day stuff makes me categorize it as fantasy. I understand how stuff taking place in the "real world" can diminish the wonder and setting but X's world is so out there that I can't compare them. Also Nopons.
Also we've also only seen the starting zone, basically the Colony 9 of Xenoblade X. Considering what they've done with their previous game, I don't have any reason to believe that they won't give us plenty of interesting environments to play through.
Consider as well that the game takes place on planet Mira, which means they can create any sort of environment that they want (they showed some stuff in space so there could be that as well).
Gundam pilot simulation fantasy indeed.
