Probably plays more games than you
You lost your credibility right there. NHL is popular, of course, but the future? Don't make me laugh. These World Cup numbers shatter anything the NHL has come up with and this will only help soccer in general in your country. I won't say soccer is the future, but I'll go on a limb and say hockey definitely isnt!

NHL is the continued present in cold places and a few oddball hot places. It *is* where the best hockey players in the world play.

MLS is on the unstoppable rise. It will eventually do better numbers overall than the NHL. I don't see how it could stay in the black and afford the world's best, though. That's the bind that pro soccer is in in the US.

I really, really think that MLS is on it's way up. The quality of the league, while not GREAT, isn't bad at all, and it's getting WAY better. It's a lot of fun. Also, go Timbers. -.-

It shouldn't be about that anyway, they should be focused foremost on creating great American players. The rest will take care of itself if you create a good enough product. It is already of a much better standard than it was 5 or so years ago.

Isn't this the same expectation during the last ~4 WC? And has MLS really grown all that much over the last 12-16 years? Plus the fact that it is really a retirement league in relation to the best leagues in the world, whereas NBA/MLB/NHL indisputably has the best players in their sports.

A little LTTP two cents on the overall Aus performance:

Maybe not the final result we were hoping for but overall a fairly good world cup for Aus and this team will only get better. 9/10 for the players and coach so far. Can't wait for the Asian Cup in 7 months :D

As for Spain, they dug their own grave not playing their best player...

Those two are the only international jerseys I have. Can't wear these to work anymore now that both teams are out >_>

You may laugh, but the overall level of play has grown quite a bit. It used to be completely laughable and looked like a greater extension of college ball. Supporting the Houston Dynamo always felt like rooting for a foreign minor league team (foreign just because of all the great Mexican supporters!!). Now the level of play is fairly solid, though there are still quite a few stinkers. Some clubs (Chivas USA) don't quite fit in, though one could say the same about the EPL....

NHL ratings have increased every year since the '05 lockout, it does very well in the 18-35 demo and local ratings in certain cities (Boston, Buffalo, Pitt, etc.) have approached NFL territory on occasion. Soccer may be on the rise, but so is hockey. NBC has done a good job of helping grow the sport and I believe they'll do the same thing with the EPL.

Neither is, though both are growing in popularity. The NHL is by far more profitable both for the league and for the players. Also, the NFL has been growing in popularity too so neither will touch it.

As long as England loses to Costa Rica I'm fine with Italy or Uruguay.

To be fair, we won the WC in Italy, so there is no bad blood.

It's still a game. There is no bad blood at all. I just like to tease you guys, that's all. Heck, my wife is German.

Only interesting match today is Italy losing to Urugay, or Urugay losing to Italy. I hate them both, so it's gonna be wonderful either way!

Upon further consideration, I think I hate Urugay slightly more since I'm going to watch the rest of the world cup in Italy... Forza Italia!

Fair enough. I just hope you make it today because I finally want to see you guys out against Germany. I know we will always lose against you.

I think Uruguay will win this, Suarez >> Mario.

Not really rooting for one or the other. Will be an interesting match regardless.

All kidding aside, Italy-Germany is probably the greatest football rivalry ever. Always intense, I love and hate it at the same time.

I just wish people would stop throwing beer bottles after me while I'm celebrating. lol

If we turn on knockout/panic mode there is very few teams that can beat us unless they are at their very best, unfortunately one of the best strikers in the world is on the opposite team.

Argh its gonna tough.

URUGUAY URUGUAY

I predict Italy to squeeze through somehow, though.

I'm looking at the potential brackets and I'm not sure which side I want Germany to land on. If we win the group, we're with Brazil/Italy(Uruguay)/France, if we get second, it's Netherlands/Argentina.

No easy path to the finals in sight!

Best player of the tournament?
Best player of the tournament!
So far, yes. Have to agree.

Don't they have to beat us competitively for it to be considered a rivalry? Otherwise it is just one side beating up on another

I love you GermanGAF, only European nation I respect in football
