They went where the money is, and that's 3DS and Mobile.
All the big support is between 3DS, Vita and PS3, with PS4 getting one-two things each 15 others announced for the others. Handhelds (or better, mainly Nintendo handhelds) have still many things to say in the market.
The more time passes and this situation doesn't change the more NintendOS approach makes way too much sense for Nintendo.

The real answer is that this is simply the reality of Japan. Even the shmups for the XB1 are 2015 releases, much less this year.
Japan is two years behind the western development scene when it comes to shifting over to current-gen, with very small exceptions. Even then, the market is diluted with the dedicated handhelds occupying time and money of developers who can develop console games.

But anybody who has been watching these threads should realise whatever historical importance Japan had as a market [for home consoles] like a decade or more ago has no bearing on it's overall impact on the current console market.
Canada and Australia buy the same games as the US and Western Europe. "The West" is like one giant market you can sell mostly the same games to.
Japan needs games that are targeted at its interests.
If this wasn't the case, then we'd have much better sales on the PS4 in Japan to match how it's doing in all the other major regions where consoles do well.

That game is vaporware at the moment and nobody should give S-E the benefit of the doubt. This is the same mismanaged S-E they have been since the PS3 era has started.

I'm still surprised that Capcom didn't announce RE7. I was 100% sure they will announce it on E3 but they didn't.
Japan days of leading consoles having their 2nd most console sales for a country coming from Japan are over. When the gen is over it'll be interesting to see which countries ltd are higher than whatever Japan manages to reach.

Yeah all systems play the same games probably upgrade the handheld tech every year or two to keep up to date with smartphones, ideally a second android OS for f2p games. Seems like the best bet outside of ditch hardware completely.

I find it ridiculous how people are already predicting ltd numbers for PS4 and Xbone based on couple of slow spring months. You know that PS3 did under 100k during its first may in US and sold under million consoles during its first year in Japan? Now it's over 80 million worldwide. Of course it could happen that each console sells less than their predecessor but there really is no trend yet outside of Japan for that. PS4 is way way ahead of PS3 launch aligned.

I think, with the exception of Bloodborne releasing, the Wii U will stay ahead of the PS4 throughout 2015.

I suspect the systems will always still show up in the region for what little is left.
It's like how we still have retail versions of some PC games despite them often selling next to nothing through that venue.

Published by one console vendor at that for the most part. Outside Nintendo for AAA console games there was just Bloodborne, Scaleforge, MGSV and maybe Phantom Dust depending on who's actually making it.

Smaller niche titles will probably remain relatively unaffected right now, as they built towards smaller audiences and are costed appropriately. But big budget endeavors primarily focused on the Japanese market are probably in more precarious positions.
The lack of a domestic market on home consoles means publishers need to make choices about where better to direct their resources. For some, this will mean developing towards the Western market, even more-so than they are already. For others it will be in realms like mobile and F2P PC; or a combination of both.

Koei-Tecmo is publishing Hyrule Warriors as Zelda Mouso in Japan. Natsume is doing some small indie stuff. I suppose Sonic Boom counts since Sega is handling publishing rights for all regions despite Nintendo consoles exclusivity?

It is when games start coming to PS4, right now there are no games that interests Japan which is exclusive to PS4. In a year, PS4 will be do good in Japan when they have games like Bloodborne, Deep down, MGS 5, many unannounced games meant for Japan etc.,

I agree this revisionism is amusing. The ps 4 was supposed to save Japan and outsell the ps triple *cough psycho mantis*. The ps 4 was supposed to sell on hype alone and pent up demand for a 'true' next gen system like in the west. Now suddenly everyone knew the ps 4 would do this badly.

98% of smartphones games sells revenue are from free to play it dosn't look like traditionnal games is doing well on smartphones so i believe 3rd party will start support ps4 soon or later
Sony should make a special bundle of MGS5 just like Ps3 MGS4 bundle Ps3 sale sold 75k on MGS4 week compared to 11k in the previous week.
Well if you're counting literally everything then Wii U also had One Piece Unlimited World Red (3DS port) and Alphadia Genesis (Android port).

Is PES more popular in Japan than FIFA? Cause I was under the impression it wasn't, and I didn't see FIFA do anything significant for the PS4. Also, yeah, cross-gen - why would they buy it on PS4 if it's the same game on PS3? It's not even like it'll look that much better.

At Giant Bomb they mentioned that the Konami booth was pretty much empty space filled with nothing. They only came so that no one would take their spot on the show floor and were hard at work trying to prevent people from taking pictures and videos of their empty booth.

Really makes me wonder what can be done about this. Surely Nintendo's next effort will try to bring Japanese devs in, I just wonder how they could go about doing that. I don't think a hybrid is really the answer but how do you make a stationary console attractive to the JApanese audience again? What exactly caused them to drop it so hard anyway? Certainly F2P phone games are very different beasts, was it really a mass exodus from pizza to hamburgers to never eat pizza again?
