I really need to see the full video in motion, but the gif and this picture again just re-emphasize the notion he was trying to control the ball to maintain possession and avoid contact with the defender's slide. The issue being he placed too much weight on his foot and pushing down afterwards.


Now, I'm not saying that's what happened, but that's the basic assessment I've seen. The vast majority + Ref's red card certainly suggest my limited view's assessment is incorrect.
