Another year another MLB The Show online failure

So tonight we celebrate what has become an annual tradition among a dedicated but ever dwindling group of MLB fans here on GAF.

Tonight the annual attempt at an MLB The Show online franchise died. The game is worse than ever. They seem to have tried to "solve" their lag and disconnect issues by using some sort of buffer which results in idiocy like the action on your screen being completely different than what is actually happening in game.

Last game, the proverbial straw, on just about every single ball in play, what my screen was showing was different than what the game had decided was correct. A cutoff throw was missed and rolled out of play on my screen one moment (so I advanced the runner from first) only to have him tagged out because what had actually happened was the second basemen DIDN'T miss the cutoff throw and was holding the ball the whole time. On one play the catcher threw the ball to the shortstop...who was still in left field after making a cutoff throw. Shit happens all of the time. People have been dropping just about every week but I think tonight we hit critical mass.

This game is broken. As. Fuck.

As usual.

San Diego is an abysmal developer and it's ludicrous that we let them get away with this shit every single year just because they can polish a turd.

Yep. Amazing how they can craft such a nice offline game and such a complete and total failure online. They should not be getting a pass for this year after year. I just stopped buying after 12.

I bought The Show last year and it was unplayable for me because of the hitching before almost every pitch. I ruined the game for me. I never went back to it to see if it was patched or not. I cannot believe that they let that go to retail without a day one patch to fix that shit. Thousands of people had the same problem online as did all my friends who got it to. Also, tried playing with one of them online and couldn't even do 1 inning it was so crappy.

Sucks to hear the same online problems, even since you're paying for it with the PS4 I'd expect an improvement. Sony San Diego let me down big time last year after hearing how great The Show was.

It does suck that so many people had issues with the online. Other than a couple small things here and there, I didn't have as many issues, but that doesn't excuse it being so horrible for so many other people.

I still think the offline part of this game is pretty good and play RttS almost on a daily basis.

I don't get how MLB The Show hasn't been able to put it together for almost 8 years now. I gave up on it after '08 was horrible online, '10 was horrible online, and '12 was horrible online.

Still can't figure out how online baseball was better in 2006 on the PS2 / Xbox than it is now on the PS4 (or 360/PS3). MVP Baseball '06, while a forgettable college baseball game, was a pretty damn good online game.

Every year same shit. It's crazy they keep getting away with it, it's always top 5 in the NPD the month it comes out.

This years game was great aside from the online. Which sucks for me, since the Gaf league was the only reason i bought it.

Its dumb how this has been a problem every single year. Same with NBA2k. Atleast i only take a shot on the show once every couple years because im not a huge baseball fan.

the sheep at neogaf will praise 2k and the show to high heavens despite their piss poor excuses for online performance but madden gets called a piece of shit with no additional comments

NO JUSTICE NO PEACE!
NO JUSTICE NO PEACE!

Guys, he's just mad that I beaned him after he hit a 2 run blast then went on to score 9 runs.

ps.. I scored 9 runs because of fielding fuckery and don't give a fuck down the middle fast balls.

Game is trash. San Diego delivers yet again.

Every year same shit. It's crazy they keep getting away with it, it's always top 5 in the NPD the month it comes out.

That's the 'because it's so pretty' bounce. Same shit 2k gets away with year after year. Sports games are meant to be played online. It should be the #1 priority.

FMT is right for as much shit EA gets wrong in other genres their sports games are always solid as a rock online. Keep hatin sheeple.

Why don't they simply let the batter be host and switch host when the batting team changes? Only the batter needs pinpoint timing.

That is your opinion. IMO that is why Madden is such an abysmal single player game. At this point I'd have more faith in San Diego actually implementing good netcode than say Madden ever representing a realistic game of Football.

No that wouldn't work. You need pinpoint timing while pitching and fielding as well.

Ok, sure that's my opinion that's a valid point. But having more faith in San Diego implementing good net code, ever? Nah, bro.

Also what are your issues with madden not representing a realistic game of football?

I was watching sanjuro play a little bit and it looked pretty janky. I've never tried it myself based off other people's reactions to it.

It's a shame they can't seem to get decent netcode, because all the other modes are solid.

Every year you tell me it's fine! I stopped falling for it.

Yeah after being disappointed year after year by High Heat/MVP/The Show all being absolute ass online, I've pretty much accepted the fact that there will never be a lag free baseball game and just stick with offline play.

MVP did not have ass online. It had a 4player online that surprisingly worked. And this was in 2006. Never played High Heat online.

Haha please dont get me started on Madden I could go on all day. From the lack of out of game Formation Subs and Tiered Play calling to defenders that dont set the edge on outside run plays, front seven that has no gap assignments or something resembling it, and non-existent penalties or wide reciever/DB interactions, Madden is nowhere near representing the game of Football. Not trying to sound like "that guy" but I played Football up until College and Madden is Maddenball not Football.

OT: Yes I agree that The Show online play is absolutely horrible. And San Diego shouldnt get a pass for it. However, im very glad I didnt get the game to play online, feel bad for all you Online Franchise guys!

I remember MVP being pretty bad online, but maybe I'm just traumatized by everyone picking the Royals since Zack Greinke was untouchable with that 55 mph curve that looked like a knuckleball

This is how I win games this year.

Game is shit. Fuck you, San Diego.

Ive seen a few videos of crazy stuff like this it reminds me of how broken previous years were. I haven't had any major issues like this at all this year though, in my case it feels like the online is finally fixed. Something must be seriously broken for sure, me and my friends find our experience to be so wildly different from everyone elses.

madden is more arcade than it is simulation. once you overcome that and just enjoy it for a competitive "arcade" sports game it's alright.

single player sports games are absolutely worthless once you get a taste of human blood!

Played my first online franchise game with my friend last week. Worked pretty well, and for the first time ever in The Show the online hitting/pitching was almost as smooth as offline. There were def some weird fielding things, but the final result was what it should have been.

We tried two more games this week, and got disconnected in the 2nd and 6th inning respectively. Hitting/pitching was smooth again, but as soon as the ball is put in play who the hell knows what is happening on our screens. Worlds diverge as balls appear to fly all over the field. I never tried to advance my runners, cuz I never knew where the ball was. I'm pretty sure both de-syncs occurred as soon as the ball was put into play. Yuck.

Don't know if we're gonna try again. Maybe once more, but then, no more, and when, if ever, again? If it weren't for the amazing out-of-town/league leaders scroll in offline franchise (which should be a part of every sports game), I don't know if I'd play this game again. As it is I'm currently playing it almost every night, but not online with my friend, which I was super excited about. I am alone, with only my cat, my Orioles, and the darkness to comfort me.

Worlds diverge.

If this had been madden or FIFA, we would have seen the world burn in rage. Some how these guys keep getting good review scores year after year.

New to the show and have loved the offline, online is garbage. I'm unable to enjoy it at all, and although other games have a lot of online issues (I.e. fifa, madden, nba2k, etc) at least you can enjoy the game online to certain respective extents.

I agree the online play sucks, but that doesn't make the whole game shit, guys. Even if all you're personally interested in is online, that's obviously not their priority, and the single player (franchise, RTTS, etc.) and local multiplayer are great.

there is a difference between having something as a priority (the most important thing) and having something as being functional. i don't think anyone expects a company like sony san diego or 2k to put ALL their eggs in the online basket but holy fuck you can't do better than this? absolutely shameful. what is happening in online these games is basically the equivalent of your single player game just randomly freezing and you not being able to finish it every other game.

i wont say i am done buy MLB the show or NBA 2k but i am done buying them on day 1. i'll wait to get impressions from actual people and not websites that just want to say "MLB THE SHOW IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER WITH COOL NEW FEATURES LIKE MOVING HAIR AND THE JOCK CAM! IN STORES EVERYWHERE MAY 30TH FOR $59.99! ONLY ON PS4! GREATNESS AWAITS!"

I've never played the show, but it sounds like another NBA 2K situation, aka the competition is so sparse they don't bother fixing the bugs?

Yeah the offline stuff is fine. San Diego is still shit.

Well, I just recently got a PS3 and grabbed TheShow13 for $10 used and I cannot use the online portion anyway due to the online pass bullshit, but the game has now locked up on me multiple times while in the "Road to the Show" mode and now I can't past "Play Next Appearance" and am basically stuck. I checked out forums and tons of people are having this problem. How the fuck are they getting away with this AND the terrible online situation? I know I will never buy another one of TheShow games, used or not.

Dat MLB license is a powerful pull I guess.

Oh please. What did any of us do before online gaming was a thing? We delved into the offline modes.

Online bandwidth is too much of a variable worldwide to ever have solid online gameplay. All games - Madden, NCAA, etc - have unacceptable lag to play online compared to the offline component. Let's not act like this one game is the problem. They all suck online.

Solution? Why don't people actually play the myriad of offline portions. RTTS is worth $59.99 alone.

Solution is don't put in a mode that you are incapable of making work. It sours the entire package.

And you clearly haven't played Madden, NCAA or NHL online. GAF has had successful multiple season online franchises for years in those games.

I have never had a pleasant experience online with a baseball game, the timing is just too fine.

Football kind of works, but even then, not really. Totally different timing on kick offs.

I see you haven't played madden

Licensed games on a nutshell. People gonna buy them, might as well ship it with a turd instead of a disk

Except that Madden and NHL have fantastic online experiences and Madden at least made a great transition to PS4.

Some teams are capable, San Diego is simply incompetent.

that's why you usually don't buy a game if his predecessor had such glaring problems.
vot ewith your wallet, only tis way you are gonna see changes

Every year there are issues with the online, but for the most part I've had great games from MLB 2010 through MLB 2013. Was in the GAF league every year for maybe 5-6 years and the leagues that failed usually did so because of Frankman.

But this year Sony San Diego really shit the bed. Everything that Eznark said in his original post is par for the course with my experience too. The new latency buffering completely destroys the game. I have a wired 100 Mb internet connection and still am finding most games busted. Oh, a game can be played generally (though the game crashes more often than any other Show game) but what's happening on one player's end frequently isn't matching up with the other's. I have recorded so many clips of shit happening in this game...and I've only played maybe a dozen games online this year. In previous years I'd play literally hundreds of games between the GAF leagues, other leagues, online exhibition, and Diamond Dynasty and I wouldn't experience the same amount of game breaking shit in a full year that I've witnessed in this short period of time.

Also, online stat tracking on the game is fucked up. Just one example from our GAF league:

N3FYujN.png

And threads about the game's issues routinely get locked over at the official Show Forums. There was a post recently where they were saying at some point they have to focus their resources on the 2015 version of the game and some things wouldn't get fixed in 2014. This game isn't even 2 months old and they're already basically saying "deal with it".

I've bought the Show every year since 2008. I've bought the Vita versions as well.

I don't think I'm buying it again next year. I would love some kind of refund but that ain't happening. This game is far more broken than even Battlefield 4, but it's a much smaller game and still a "sacred cow" to some MLB Show fans so it doesn't get nearly the attention as others.

I ended up abandoning the league last night. I felt really shitty about doing that because the commish and the other people in there are really great. If you look through the Show League Thread you'll see post after post of people suffering glitches or disconnects or crashes etc. etc. yet for the most part we tried pushing through it. But I just couldn't do it anymore; the game stopped being fun. And I fucking love baseball - and until this year, I fucking loved The Show.

Bah, goddammit Sony
