It depends on your perspective on the actual act itself. I don't find the act monstrous, I find it stupid and juvenile. I don't think it's worthy, despite him doing it for the third time in his career, of an all encompassing ban. I think missing out on the rest of the World Cup and, perhaps, an extended international ban to be sufficient punishment. Oh yes, and ensure he wears a gum shield at all times during matches from now on.

To me, it does need to be treated differently to the usual deliberate fouls - it should be in the same box alongside headbutts or elbows - i.e physical assault.

I think there were cases in the UK of criminal charges being sought against footballers? Can't remember completely though. The FA would probably have tried to keep it all in-house though.

Uruguay have spent the past 24 hours or so rallying around their star striker Luis Suarez.
But it seems not everyone associated with the national team is on his side after his alleged bite on Giorgio Chiellini.

Alcides Ghiggia, the man who scored the winning goal for Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup against Brazil, says Suarez deserves a ban.

"I think a ban could be applied here because it's unheard of," Ghiggia, 87, said.
"I don't know what this kid thinks and what goes through his head. Whether you're Uruguayan or of an other nationality, you always have to reproach these things on the field, this is not a war."

C'mon, I mean is if the nation of Uruguay are a singular entity acting in unison, defending the guy. Of course, at the same time, they're more inclined to defend him, as perhaps any of us would if it was one of our own countrymen. That inherent bias would apply to any nation. But there are going to be many, many Uruguayans who don't condone his actions. You don't really need proof for that.
