Idle Thumbs Megathread | Indepth discussion inbetween horsebags and birdsounds

(As soon as I heard "And I'm Danielle Riendeau" I paused the podcast and relistened to the intro to 163 to make sure I had it right. Then I allowed myself to be happy.)

I think Danielle is a great addition to the cast. Glad to see the assimilation is official.

I think it's an attempt to layer real world economics on to a completely virtual world, since scarcity of resources isn't a fundamental problem in virtual worlds. So trying to enforce scarcity on to something that doesn't need it is really weird, especially when it involves real world money*.

*Not an economist.

I really don't get how star citizen isn't the sleaziest thing ever.

The real reason?

It looks pretty and claims to be in a genre that a lot of people miss.

I'm pretty sure that's all there is to it. Everything about it sounds scummier than the scummiest Zynga free to play games. It's like a gambling experiment without the burden of regulation, explicitly designed to take advantage of people with compulsion disorders and rich people with no self control.

Danielle is an awesome addition to the show. Only helps that she also plays a bunch of games to help fill the gaps when Nick isn't there :-P

She needs to play Hearts of Iron 4 once it comes out XD

My biggest gripe with her addition is that now the cast has been diversified. I came for an all white gen X male gaming podcast. Fuck this shit.

We're probably not even gen X. Born in October of 1980 I am the oldest host on the show, and I don't think I qualify by the age bands most core gen x-ers identify with (usually ending in 79 or 80, right, at least by more curmudgeonly accounts?). So we disappoint on all fronts now, I'm sorry. Also does that mean that at least Chris, Sean, and Nick are millennials? I hope so.

Just thought I'd give my feedback that she's the reason Idlethumbs is now out of my rotation and why I haven't been to Polygon in over a year. Best of luck, guys.

Cool story.

Unrelated-- Has anyone here played Teleglitch? I saw some footage of it today and it looked like something I/we might like, and want to stream. Is there any consensus on it?

I think Danielle is awesome but that's because at this point in my podcast listening career, I like hearing people with different perspectives and interests within the hobby/industry. I've been listening to the same guys talk about games for a long time and while they're still interesting and cover the type of games and content I care about, it's always good to spice up the old formula with someone like Danielle who has different tastes, experiences, perspective but can still mesh well with Chris, Sean and Jake. Even better when it's as frequent as it is now.

tl;dr Danielle owns. Haters step off.

Teleglitch was cool, but I didn't play more than the trial. I think it was just because of my own frame of mind when I tried it - too many buttons to keep in mind, to difficult to follow the action on-screen, lots of concepts introduced at the same time, etc.

I've only played the demo but I found the presentation to be very anachronistic. You have a cool chromatic aberration effect when your character attacks which is cool on its own but doesn't work for me in the games style. Which is a shame since I loved the promotional material.

Mechanically the game felt like a slower paced, less risk/reward Hotline Miami. It's comparable to the NES Die Hard game.

There actually is valuable feedback to be gleaned from this post, valuable feedback for any podcaster; and that is:

No one gives a shit about what you don't like. Talk about what you love! So far, that's exactly what Danielle has been bringing to the show, and it's a better show for it.

I fell in love with Danielle during her Gameshark days. Their podcast (Jumping the Shark, now continued at the No High Scores blog) was in tatters when she left. So I'm super happy she's on another podcast I like (and sometimes love).

yo danielle rocks. I'm happy when a new Idle thumbs podcast hits my client and even happier when shes on.

make her permanent? not sure on that yet.

More often than not these days, other than me and Chris (who have only ever sat out a couple episodes each) the host roster seems to rotate week to week. I imagine that will continue to be the case, but who knows?

I would rather have a rotating seat rather than Danielle permanent only because you guys are surrounded by other people in development. I don't know if you guys go to GameDevDrinkup in San Fran, but there a ton of interesting/diverse people there that would be good guests on the podcast.

I meant that the "hosts" roster includes me, Chris, Sean, Nick, Danielle, and once or twice a year Steve, which is a lot of people. That doesn't preclude other guests.

hey how come you guys don't do dota coverage anymore?

Dota Today exists but its a fairly irregular cast. That said, Sean is going to the International for at least a day or two so I hope that we get an episode afterwards.

Not a HUGE deal but you guys should update the "Updates Weekly" text in the Dota Today section of the Shows page and possibly add Brad Muir's name to the hosts list.

Interesting to see people 'complain' about Danielle. What's not to like? She actually plays lots of videogames and can discuss them in an interesting manner!

I like to think they've escaped it's evil clutches!

It's super hard, but really fun as well. Not too many twitch-based roguelikes out there. Also, it's made by a three Estonians.

As one of the typically silent listeners I'm glad the cast is self-sustaining and Danielle is an awesome addition. Thanks for the weekly pods :]

edit: Jake did you know that at the same time lords are being managed at the International, there will be a Lord of the Donk competition at Quakecon? Not sure if watching esports is your thing, but there will be pro Quake Live Duels and CTF comps on that weekend. Shaping up to be an awesome show!

Teleglitch is pretty rad. It's super lo-fi, and very intense. It's probably one of the more nervewracking roguelikes I've played. The complete lack of music and the weirdness of the sound design puts you on edge. Great little game.

I cant deny that I was mostly attracted to teleglitch because of the super high ceiling 3D effect, coupled with low res textured aesthetic. Sounds like I should play it, ideally with Chris.

Teleglitch definitely seems like a good game to stream. I really need to play more of it, but it was great that one time I played for an hour or so.

Maybe if Sean got some more fibre in his diet he'd be a little more regular?

Danielle plays games: a novel addition to the podcast.
