Okay, we're halfway through the year, what are the media frontunners for GOTY?

E3 has come and gone. We know what the rest of the year looks like, barring some indie surprise. Which games will be up for GOTY on the various end-of-year lists?

I'm thinking Destiny will be the big media winner this year. Seems to check all the right boxes: $60 AAA game, developer pedigree, E3 hype, etc.

Perhaps Dragon Age 3 also? Far Cry 4, maybe? Perhaps some will go for Dark Souls 2? Some games we thought would be contenders, like Titanfall, Infamous, and Watch Dogs, already feel like they've come and gone. A narrow field this year. I don't see them going for Wii U games in large numbers either; after all, Smash Bros. Brawl didn't win anything from the media. Also, the variou HD re-releases this year, like TLOU and Halo, will likely be disqualified by most sites, so they won't be contenders.

As for GAF's GOTY, I think Dark Souls 2 has it in the bag. With its main competition (Witcher 3, Batman) delayed to 2015, it probably won't even be close.

Your thoughts?

Destiny could take it, Sunset has a possibility if it's really good, FH2/DC will spar for racing GOTY.

Personally, I'm willing to believe that some people might find the Halo collection GOTY-worthy if it pans out exactly how people expect. *That* would be a surprising turn.

Captain Toad

Toad's first game, those glorious little diorama levels, interesting level design / puzzles, unconventional bosses, etc.. plus it's pretty much the only interesting game on Wii U this year makes it a lock to appear on GOTY lists.

For shooters, Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare, its a game that really doesn't get as much praise as it should compared to certain other shooters, and IMO this is the game EA should have been pushing big time - not Titanfall.

I'll say Destiny, but I'd love to see "Lords of the Fallen" pull a out of nowhere to win acclaim like "Arkham Asylum" did a few years back.

I'm thinking either destiny or an indie game not out yet. This seems like a good year for a digital download game or indie game to steal some GOTY awards. Like the year journey came out. It was a down AAA year.

I dot see it being anything already released.

There is no new Rockstar or Bethesda game for the press to slobber over this year so it's hard to say.

But I bet some GOTY awards are part of the Destiny 10 year plan so probably that

Multiplat: Destiny
Xbox One: Sunset Overdrive/Titanfall or Halo MC Collection if they count remakes.
PS4: inFamous: Second Son, or TLOU if they count remakes
Wii U: Super Smash Bros.
3DS: Toss up between Smash 3DS or Pokemon ORAS, again, depends on if they count remakes.
Vita: Hotline Miami 2
PC: Also Hotline Miami 2.

In terms of stuff that already come out, it's Titanfall, Watch Dogs, Mario Kart 8, and Infamous: Second Son.

In terms of fall games, I could see Destiny, Evolve, Sunset Overdrive, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Far Cry 4 and AC Unity all in the running. If COD: AW is as good as I'm expecting I could see that up there as well.

Oh, and if The Witness actually releases this year I could totally see it.

edit: Oh snap, forgot Smash comes out this year. That will probably also be in the running, if it doesn't get delayed for Wii U

Wait, is the thread about what the frontrunners are so far, or is the thread about guessing which H2-2014 games will be good enough?

If it's the former:
There's an outside chance that Titanfall, if managed correctly, or Watch_Dogs could be competitive. There's an extremely small chance Tomodachi Collection or Mario Kart 8 could. Transistor might get a vote. Dark Souls II has a very very very very small chance. Beyond that, I don't think anything out this year is likely to show up in GOTY awards. Slim pickings so far.

If it's the latter:
Battlefield, AC5, Dragon Age 3, and Far Cry 4, Smash Bros. The Witness will be competitive if it gets out in time. Destiny is going to be in the conversation. Captain Toad might be a dark horse if it's executed really well, but it won't have mainstream traction. Evolve apparently got good notice at E3 so who knows.

Some other indie possibilities, pending releasing in 2014: Hohokum, The Stomping Land, Banished, That Dragon Cancer, Gods Will Be Watching, Hotline Miami 2, Below, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Hyper Light Drifter, Inside

Out of the games already out: The media will probably vote for Titanfall.
Not including games already out: The media will probably vote for Destiny.

Lets just say I probably won't agree with the media.

Probably something shootery and boring. Not Titanfall though, it launched too early in the year.

My personal GOTY is probably Shovel Knight, unless usurped by No Man's Sky.

Kirby Triple Deluxe but it will lose to Super Smash Bros 4.

I certainly hope it's not Watch_Dogs. It's one of the firmest 6/10 games I've ever played. Aiden Pierce ranks among the worst characters in any game or any form of media really.

Has anyone mentioned Divinity: Original Sin yet? No?

Well, I guess it's not out until Monday but goddamn, the first quarter of the game is the best RPG we've seen in years. Not that the press will notice. Ah well.

I'm afraid that Captain Toad is just gonna be a superficial offshoot from the SM3DW levels. It doesn't look like it had the time to develop into something special.

I'd say Evolve has a decent chance. It seems to have grabbed the attention of many media outlets, particularly at E3. AC:U may have a chance too if they manage to get back to AC2's roots with the new setting.

I was worried that would be the case until I saw the level with the fire dragon. That alone showed me they've put some effort into this game.

If Far Cry 4 is able to get a good story together this time, in conjunction with interesting verticality mechanics and is as fun to play as 3, I think it may surprise a lot of people.

I feel like I'm missing something with the Captain Toad thing. Those levels were easily the most boring part of 3D World. Not to mention how much I resented the game for making me put away my pro controller for the tablet.

A game that comes out in Q4.

Last of Us came out in June, Journey in March, Mass Effect 2 in January, Red Dead Redemption in May, Portal 2 in April.

Contrary to popular belief, there is not much correlation between GOTY winners and the time of the year they're released.
