Okay, we're halfway through the year, what are the media frontunners for GOTY?

Destiny is going to be the undisputed GOTY among critics, no doubt in my mind.

I hope South Park will get some love too. Obsidian really deserves it.

Cant remember the interview (sorry), but apparently our French protagonist is American voiced.

Wolfenstein is the best/most entertaining game Ive played so far. I'm looking forward to Dragon Age, despite my general disdain DA2 and EA. Lots of positive reaction from people who played a little bit of Destiny, though the footage doesn't do much for me.

Lots of stuff coming out, this is a good year for a surprise GOTY winner.

So far I think the only game that had a critical reception on the level of your usual Goty game is Dark Souls 2(I still haven't played it).

Titanfall is out, Infamous might have a change if the DLC is extremely good.

Of the ones I played Left Behind and Ground Zeroes were my favorites, but they won't be considered most likely.

If Destiny is well reviewed it will probably get the most awards.

Based on the alpha alone and assuming the rest of the game is of a high quality I'd be more than fine with Destiny winning.

I'd love to see South Park or even Wolfenstein win. But they won't, and Dark Souls 2 wasn't good enough to win for me.

So that leaves Destiny...or Dragon Age

Are you wondering aloud? As a Gamespot editor, this is kind of your job to figure out :P

Wondering aloud. I know our community didn't like that it was our pick for February Game of the Month; I can only imagine what reactiont a GotY award would bring. I was curious what you guys think about Left Behind. Surprised no one has mentioned it yet.

It's not a game, it seems like a very clear line. It can't be played without TLoU, it's additive not a game on its own.

I can actually feel Far Cry 4 being the front runner, but Destiny for sure has a chance. No released game stick out to me as being the shoe-in for GOTY, but the ones that have the best chances if the latter half of the year falls apart are South Park and MK8. Titanfall will not win GOTY. There's no chance.

I must interject that Dangaronpa is still the best game this year.

If it's the latter:
Battlefield, AC5, Dragon Age 3, and Far Cry 4, Smash Bros. The Witness will be competitive if it gets out in time. Destiny is going to be in the conversation. Captain Toad might be a dark horse if it's executed really well, but it won't have mainstream traction. Evolve apparently got good notice at E3 so who knows.

Is there a reason Assassin's Creed Unity isn't called Assassin's Creed V, by the way?

Why would it be counted as a full game?

Destiny is the obvious pick as long as it launches well. Tlou will get my vote until something comes out better than it.

Destiny overall.

I think you overestimate Dark Souls II, many didn't particularly like the direction it's going. I don't have a problem with it, but I think a lot of people think Dark Souls is the superior game.

For RPGs, it will probably come down to Dragon Age 3, for the media anyway. Divinity releases in two days, but won't be on any major publications radar and, as much as I'm a fan of Tales games, I doubt Tales of Xillia 2 will be enough to overtake DA3. Pillars of Eternity is not likely to be released this year.

Maybe if they did it stand alone like Festival of Blood or Blood Dragon, it could be understandable as an option.

That is weird. What the heck was up with the voices in that Ass Creed Unity footage? These developers are French Canadians, you'd expect it to be more homegrown. It'll probably be there as an option, but I would have preferred that footage to be french with subtitles.

Wolfenstein The New Order has most of the Germans speaking their language with subtitles, and makes the whole thing feel authentic. Many people have even benefited from knowing the language and picking up on things that others won't.

It will be Destiny. And I will continue to wonder what people found enjoyable about it. Maybe the full game will be more to my liking though

There's plenty of interesting stuff coming out if you're interested in more than heavily-marketed cinematic AAA shooters.

I feel like the only people talking about the slick marketing cinematics blah blah of Destiny are people who haven't played it. Surely.

The game is really, really tight and polished but it's not set pieces, storytelling, or how "cinematic" it is that makes the game fun. This isn't Uncharted. It's not really all that cinematic.

It's a pretty straight forward shooter with hints of interesting lore and solid multiplayer hooks that make it fun to play for hours. I mean, which heavily-marketed cinematic shooters are you even talking about from this year, other than Titanfall? Watch Dogs isn't a "shooter" and Wolfenstein -- the superior game of those two anyway -- could hardly be called heavily-marketed.

This just feels like a cynical response to another user's cynical statement. There are good games this year, and some of them have been shooters.

They seemingly used all those people already for Watch Dogs.

If we are only counting the first half of the year I would say:
Transistor (amazing soundtrack as well)
South Park: The Stick of Truth
Dark Souls 2 (weakest of the souls series, but still a great game)

If we are counting the second half as well my prediction would be:
Destiny
Sunset Overdrive (maybe)

Not much else, but maybe the sequels or yearly games will do well.
Also going out on a limb Shadow of Mordor looks really good. The E3 demos were awesome. It might have a chance. Not an amazing year for gaming. Next year is looking retarded though. So many games. : )

I think Destiny will get a lot of awards. It has game play that people like without being burdened by sequel fatigue. Either that or whatever the most highly regarded downloadable game ends up being. I am not entirely clear on what is actually coming out this year among those.

Dark Souls II will make the most top ten lists of any of the early '14 releases.

Based on reception to the alpha, Destiny seems like a good shot with Arkham Knight and The Witcher 3 being delayed until next year. Other AAA offerings would be DA: Inquisition, AC: Unity, Dark Souls 2, and maybe even South Park: TSoT.

Dark horse candidates: Transistor, Divinity: OS, Pillars of Eternity, and The Witness (if those last two even make it out this year).

Whatever is the loudest and comes the latest in the year or close to it. When's the last time something from the first half of the year won? Recency bias is a strong factor.

Edit: I should have done my research before posting. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (May) won Edge's in 2010. Skyrim was technically the first half of the year. Then there was Mass Effect 3.
