Over the last 10 years, what were your GOTY picks for each year?

Sounds like you describing yourself.

It was the perfect length and it scored an 87 - 89 meta/open.
If anything it was underrated, its a borderline perfect game, tight controls, good set pieces, simple yet concise story(its not trying to be too clever), if it had TitanFalls level of MP customization and crossplay to keep the servers alive, it would be my shooter of the decade 2010 - 2020.
It only loses out to BF4 (1 by proxy) because god damn that game got good once they sorted out its performance issues and the DLC was complete.

Damn now I really want to play BF4 and Titanfall2, off to Steam I go!
I've finished it on release. It was 5 hours long and nothing special. it is what it is for me.
It's an ok game but I don't even remember much about it.

Here's mine:

2023: Alan Wake II
2022: Kirby and the Forgotten Land
2021: Psychonauts 2
2020: The Last of Us: Part II
2019: Resident Evil 2
2018: Marvel's Spider-Man
2017: Super Mario Odyssey
2016: DOOM
2015: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
2014: Sunset Overdrive
2013: The Last of Us
Sunset Overdrive is a solid choice. This, Titanfall and Dead Rising 3 should have been the standard for the whole Xbox one generation.

2014: TLOU
2015: The Witcher 3
2016: Uncharted 4

overrated and too short
I don't mind that a game is short as long as its great but yeah i also find Titanfall 2 overrated.
I never played the multiplayer part but the single player part of the game isn't anything special outside of those robot sections.
I just don't get the praise, its gameplay is a mesh between CoD and BF so in terms of gunplay i think it has nothing impressive, but what bothered me the most is the extreme amount of handholding, the game is too casual and too easy, the boss fights are a joke and the mechanics are super shallow and easy.
I always find people comparing it to DOOM but wow the gap couldn't be any bigger imo.
I did like the Cause and Effect mission, that one was great and the robot abilities are nice and all, but other than that, nothing really top tier there, a slightly better FPS than the annual CoD and BF.

Yakuza fucking Zero in 2018? A 2015 game that was localized for the West in January 2017?
Edit: uh ok, you probably mean the PC release.

It's an ok game but I don't even remember much about it.

You remember having a good time, and that what really matters.
Unless you were rushing cuz its releases was cursed, you should have enjoy bbs evolution over time, and should have multiple levels you wanted to replay later(if not the first test), and when the servers were alive, your frustration would have been lack of customization........the DLCs helped but it was probably too late for that.

The robot evolution story didn’t move me at all for some reason. Maybe it was too predictable.
But yeah. I don’t remember having a bad time. I remember having good time. Just the game didn’t leave a mark

Anybody who has Astro bot in 2024, and not astro bot in 2018 hasn't played VR and is missing out on something very very special.

That or they love rdr2 too much.

The way I do the game of the year is simply using the games I played that year so not necessarily games from that year. Here are my 10.

2024 - Psuedoregalia: 3d platformers are my favorite game genre and this one has the best wall kick in video games. It also has some great atmosphere and an overall excellent 3d platformer move kit. I just wish it had a bigger budget and was longer.

2023 - Donkey Kong Country Returns: Might be the best DKC game, had a blast with the wii controls and the variety of the worlds. A ton of great levels with challenge. Also a ton of minecart levels.

2022 - Elden Ring: Might be the best game ever made.

2021 - Bowser Fury: Love 3d platformers and man does this one deliver. 100% it twice in two weeks. The incredible use of the open world makes me really hopeful for a more "full" version for the next fullblown 3d mario game.

2020 - Bug Fable's: Love Paper Mario and this is the 3rd PM game as far as im concerned. Great combat, lots of quality content and filled with charm.

2019 - Celeste: Might be the best 2d platformer ever made. Loved the variety in the levels and it has some of the best video game music in the business. Also I think it deals with the concept of anxiety and depression in a great way.

2018 - God of War 2018: It's the best god of war game, the combat is stellar, the pacing is stellar and the sheer amount of content is great as well. Loved this game so much I got tinnitus from it (literally...).

2017 - Super Mario Odyssey: Incredible game, was a little disappointed with how certain moons were handled but it objectively has mario's best move kit. So much fun and content. My 4th fav 3d mario.

2016 - Dark Souls: Judged it way harsher at the time due to adoring Demon's Souls but this game is really incredible. Really wish I hadnt played it pure magic. I will definitely replay it with a melee build at some point.

2015 - Killer Instinct 2013: My favorite fighting game. So many cool characters that play crazy different from one another all tied together with an incredibly intense but well balanced core combo breaker system. Really hope this gets a sequel soon.
