Both could have been yellow. There are no difference nuances of yellow on the card. The referee decided to not escalate things so early on and it worked for him so far. Really one of the best referee at this world cup (including those very good calls on supposed penalties). Not everything is a conspiracy.

People here really don't think that the referees are at the very least "encouraged" to give Brazil an advantage? Starting with the quarter finals maybe it won't matter too much but the match vs Croatia looked very much like an attempt to avoid catastrophic embarrassment.

I don't think there is an institutional direction for the refs to legislate one way or another.

But they are human and they certainly could feel the pressure of a home crowd pushing them to see a 50/50 call one way instead of the other. Moreso for the less experienced refs though.

Webb gets put in the pressure cooker every week in the Prem, he's not going to be so easily swayed.
