Yeah. I mean Muller sort if playing up top for the Germans, but he's more of a 10 than a 9. They're really playing strikerless for the part.

I'm one of Muller's biggest fans. Love this German team and think they're favorites with the way that Argentina's back four has looked and Brazil's inability to connect in the box.
Klose as a sub is so devastating to their opposition. Not only does he change the entire shape of the attack but he's also Klose. Legend.

The competition would be poorer without the dutch. If you mean in terms of upsets - probably.
If Mexico beat the Dutch, wouldn't that mean they're more competitive and therfore would make a better competition?

I feel like a lot of managers have fell in love with false 9s and one flair AM when it doesn't suit the players they have.

Seen it repeatedly with sticking poachers out in the wing to facilitate the use of a false 9. When it would make much more sense to either drop the poacher completely and use a real winger or play the poacher up front with creative guy feeding him.
To be fair, I feel like the traditional winger has been dead for quite a while. Fullbacks are so versatile and athletic nowadays that they're serving that role pretty damn well.

It's hard to say how many teams really play with a false 9. There's a (relative) glut of guys like Messi, Gotze, Fabregas, Hazard - slight guys with impeccable on ball skills and heady awareness - that we see those teams finding success at the club level. That said, obviously teams like Real Madrid, Athletico, and Man City play with a traditional striker and find success that way.

I guess the question is, what came first? Less talent at the striker/cf position or greater talent at the CAM/W position?

FUCK YOU MICK JAGGER AND YOUR FALSE HOPE! YOU'RE BLOODY CURSE IS CURSED YOU JINXY STINKER!!

If Mexico beat Holland...best World Cup ever?

Then we'll find Mick Jagger and make him pay... thoroughly ;-)
Luckily he hasn't expressed a preference for Holland, as far as i know.
Mexico has one of those teams that will probably not win the cup but can easily knock you out of the tournament. Especially if you underestimate them. Mexico winning is not very far fetched. They can, but i still expect us to win.

Well yeah most wingers are inside forwards nowadays but I think the false 9 revolution has a lot to do with that, although it is a chicken and egg scenario.

I guess it was a natural evolution though, as forwards were becoming more creative for a while(Baggio, Del Piero etc etc) that it makes sense that the next step would be to employ them as a false 9.

I think there are still good old school poachers out there, they are just too often put into roles that don't make sense for them.

To be honest, if there are less clones of this guy:
cnimgdotsulekhadotcom_Inzaghi.jpg

I think it's better for the game.

Ok, Colombian here. That match was insane. I think Uruguay was so much better than Colombia at the end of the 2nd period. Everyone here was afraid of a head goal from Godin. That guy is insane.

Good game Uruguayans, you were amazing rivals.

edit: this is an article in spanish about the second goal of the match. I agree with the author: it was a collective masterpiece

Haha well pippo was an extreme outlier. Players like Shearer, King Henrik Larsson etc were still fun to watch.

Edit I should probably mention that I was a poacher (sometimes winger)when I played so that might be clouding my judgement regarding poachers value to the game. When I had a season ticket at parkhead I just loved watching Henrik off the ball, his movement and anticipation was fantastic to watch and attempt to learn from.

Better than Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho? lolol
Ronaldinho was hilariously overrated. I remember people comparing him to Zidane lol he was greedy and often ran into nowhere then did tricks to no end result. Of course the odd time it came off it looked great but what people forget is the 20 times he attempted the same thing and it didn't work.

Please dont let Messi be the next Roberto Baggio

Please dont let Messi be the next Roberto Baggio

Please dont let Messi be the next Roberto Baggio

I have a feeling this will happen. Please dont let this happen

Yeah i have to disagree with you there. He was great in his prime, also thank god for brazilian players like him who still play for the stands/cameras.

Just like Neymar did that failed Rainbow flick lol.

Still, Ronaldo Nazario de Lima >>>>>>>>> Second (great) tier Ronaldos.

He was on track to be the best player of all time until his injury, yet he still is one of the best of all time

Yes I have, I enjoy the dutch going forward more. Along with Colombia they have been the most entertaining teams.
I'm sorry but Netherlands have only been enterteining in small bursts. The barely attacked against Chile, they were outplayed against Spain in the first half and also outplayed by Australia at times.

Ronaldo will always be the real Ronaldo to me, love that dude. Two fucked knees and still one of the greats, sad his record is going to be taken.

They could barely hold the fort against Brazil
That's not the best argument there.

edit to expand a bit:

It's not like we can downplay Brazil that much, despite not being as dominant as in the past. Historically strong, playing at home. Haven't lost a game yet. Still, Mexico managed not only to get a tie, but they were not afraid of putting that tie at stake by attacking as much as they could. And they could've won. Extremely positive football.

They could barely hold the fort against Brazil

That is like the first 15 minutes of both halfs, besides Herrera likes to play offensive. Look to the subs, all were offensive.

The game will sadly be a little bit less offensive, maybe, because "Gallito" Vazquez won't be able to play (2 yellows) and he was a key player in the midfield. He will be replaced by Carlos Salcido and while he has experience he won't play as intense as Vazquez did. I hope it doesn't matter too much... but Vazquez was a key part of Mexico's system.

Ronaldo is the most imoressive player i've seen in terms of his mix of power-technique-flair. Such an awesome olayer to watch, him and Zidane are my favorite players.

I've just enjoyed Colombia and Netherlands more than anyone else. I'm not saying my opinon is going to be universal.

I'm still fucking devastated, man. It hurts like hell... but, you know what? I'm proud. I'm proud of them boys. They gave their all. They left everything on the pitch. They were playing against the home team, against thousands of people screaming their lungs out against them - a yellow and green and blue tide that threatened to uproot and disintegrate everything in its wake. But they fought.

And while they lost, they never gave up. They were fighting until the end. And they went out with a bang.

I'm devastated, yes. But I'm proud of them. I believed in them, and I still do. They were carrying the weight of their homeland in their shoulders, and they made us proud.

And my new avatar is in honor of GARY FUCKING MEDEL. He's a beast. He played the entire match with a huge-ass strain that left his legs in shambles. He'll be out of the game for 2 months after today. He didn't care. He wanted to play for his country, he wanted to win. He's all passion and guts and fire. He may not be the most technical, the most exciting, the tallest or the strongest. But he has a heart bigger than his own damn country, and for that, we love him. He's a goddamn hero. His tears at the end were the tears of all of us. Of those screaming and crying at the stadium, surrounded by a wall of yellow and green and blue, not feeling intimidated at all. Of those screaming and crying at home, alongside friends or family or total strangers. He cried, and probably most of us did, but we're proud of him. We love him. He's one of us - but we can only dream and hope against hope that we can be as big and passionate as him.

So I'm devastated. I have said it already, but there's no other word to describe my current state. And at the same time, there's something greater to be learned from all this bitterness and anguish. That, somehow, if we all believe - then sometimes, even the most impossible of things can be accomplished. Even in the face of armageddon, as someone once said.

I'm proud of them. I'll never forget.

You should be very proud of your team. They played an awesome WC and the gave their best until the very last second. Respect!

That second goal was such a beauty.

Watching Donovan play in this MLS game is so depressing for some reason :/

Did you watch him play and lose against Carolina last week?

Also, fun fact:

The Mexico game tomorrow is at Castelão. This will be the THIRD time mexico plays there.

Brazil 2–0 Mexico
Brazil 0–0 Mexico

Running a regression analysis, I find the following:

Netherlands 0 - 2 Mexico

this man. Bless his heart, bless his guts. He deserves better things. No disrespect to Cardiff City, but Gary's meant to play at the biggest stage of all. He always had the raw talent and the drive, but he was prone to outbursts of fury and lapses of concentration and he always ended up falling short of what he could actually achieve. Not anymore. He's grown up.

I don't know. 538 is forecasting only a 57% chance for Costa Rica to proceed to the next round. 538 is also forecasting a 72% chance for Netherlands to move on.

Sorry, but I'm too excited and terrified at the same time. I can't wait for the game. Just don't go to penalties, pls. I don't think my heart can take it.
