2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Definitely ordering from these guys. Incredible build + SSD + MS Office?
Yes.

I'll try to look for something in my price range first, though. As is, that will eat up a lot of my budget.

Alright, this is about $830, and I'm really liking the looks of it!

Buy a Lenovo Y410p. It's $800 with a 755M. The 820M is terrible.

Ok GAF... I've got these two choices... Both Lenovo...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=6

and

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y410p/

First link... Dual GT 755Ms & 1080p display...
vs....

Single 755M w/ 1600x900 display, 2GB extra RAM, doubled storage, and a Core i7...

With the first setup, I figure that in theory the dual GPUs should be able to push the extra pixels for that 1080p res... But I'm worried about microstutter... This is the main concern.

The second laptop looks solid all around. I'm sure that the 755m should be enough to drive that res... Plus the added bonuses of more capacity (RAM + HDD) and faster CPU (sort of).

Size doesn't matter? Take the dual cards.

I know that people probably ask for miracle laptops that can run games in ultra for 500$ all the time, so I'm going to try to ask for something a tiny bit more reasonable.

Country- America

Max Budget- 700-800$

Max Size- Ideally between 15 and 17 inch screen size.

Usage- Microsoft office, lots of typing, web browsing, lots of gaming. The key thing I want is a laptop with enough power to run demanding current gen games like Witcher 3 and Assassins Creed Unity, but I just need enough power to run these games at at least very low settings and very low resolutions (even 800x600) at 30fps. I just want to be able to play these type of games, graphics aren't a priority.

Preferred resolution- 1080p or around 1600x900.

The $809 Y410p is the most power for the budget. If you can, try to stretch for This.

Yeah, I've been looking at these Lenovos for quite awhile, so I guess this confirms that they are the right choice. Thanks for the help, KJack.

I want the Lenovo 510p, but I think the 410p is best for my budget.

For gaming and other purposes, is the 1600x900 resolution that much of a hindrance?

900p isn't really much different than 1080p other than it often leads to better performance in games, and having 900p on a native res 900p display is better than 900p on a 1080p display. For example, I have a GTX 765m--I shouldn't be able to max out anything at 1080p and expect more than 30-40 fps. Yet most games I run at 900p I max out almost everything (2 GB VRAM prevents maxing textures) and still get close to if not 60 fps.

Wait, 2GB of VRAM isn't enough for max settings? Wow, I've been out of the hardware loop for a while...

Alright, I'll keep that in mind. To think, I was actually considering a $2500 MacBook last month. xD

Watch_Dogs and Wolfenstein expect 3 gigs or more for max settings.

Pfft, I'll be fine then. I'm primarily looking at last-gen and indie titles (and a few current-gen at medium settings or so).

I'm looking into getting a new laptop to double as a recording pc when needed. To my knowledge I think I would really just need lots of processing power and RAM. I don't think I need a too good of a GPU. Probably looking to stay under $1k. Any suggestions? (Option to finance would be a plus)

hello laptop gaf.

While my focus isnt on gaming when choosing a laptop, I was hoping someone could help me.

I have about a US$1800 budget.

I am definitely getting a surface, mainly due to its portability and writing capability. My brother found it useful to take notes on. I will probably be purchasing the i5, 128GB surface pro 3, and with the student discount on the microsoft store, ends up being $899.

The next 1000 would be going towards my laptop of choice. I am thinking that the lenovo Y40 should satisfy my needs.I am able to get the base model for $799 through lenovo's barnes and noble gold program.

Unless someone else thinks the i3, 64 GB would be sufficient for me. I read that the i3 used in the SP3 is slower than the i5 model of the first surface pro 1. (it would be about 720 for the i3 model when factoring in the student discount)

However, it would allow me to get the Y50 instead.

let me know about your opinions.

Get the i5 in the Surface Pro.

Alright guys:

Country: USA
Maximum budget: Highest I'll go is 1800-2000. Trying to do 1500-1700
Max size : No preference. I'm willing to sacrifice a larger screen for more performance/longer lifetime. No smaller than 13". I'd like at least a 1920x1080. Can deal with smaller as long as its not sub 900p.
Planned usage: Games (Dota 2, FFXIV, WoW, indie games like Binding of Isaac, occasionally a new shooter/RPG and some basic emulation (no need for enhancements, just full speed)
Misc: Biggest quagmire I have is whether I should just get a Macbook Air or not. I know its not a gaming laptop but I'm wondering if it'd be able to run a the games I listed at a decent framerate and I would just build a new desktop (which I plan on doing no matter whatcloser to 2015) instead. I'd probably bump the cpu/ram and ssd up. If someone has a great gaming laptop they think I'll love for the specifications I put I'd definitely be interested though. That Gs60/70 series seems really nice because I like the idea of a lower profile but I'm worried about heating. I've heard great things about Sager/Clevo's and Asus RoG's too. Or should I just wait for the MBP Retina refresh? I'm gonna need this laptop soon though so time is money at the moment.

Lastly if someone has a ultrabook that could handle those games and brings great performance I'd consider that too.

Thanks guys, I appreciate any input.

Edit: Looking through some older posts, what are opinions on the Razer Blade? Anyone here have one?

I have a 2013 model. I got it as a college laptop, and I'm pretty happy with it. It's a 900p screen with a 765m, which helps because the GPU can't afford 1080p in most cases, but it can do 900p easily. Most games I max out and run at 60 fps, a few games I might just end up at 30 fps or roll back some settings to get 60 fps. The DX11 update that Nvidia pushed out a couple months back helped a lot, I get a lot better than most benchmarks out there (for example, according to reviews I'm only supposed to get 60 fps with drops on medium settings Dishonored, I max out Dishonored and get a locked 60, and forcing SGSSAA gives me only a few drops below 60).

All of those games listed should run fine, they're not really as demanding as some of the games I've gotten decent performance on. As a laptop, it's really well made and you get used to the sleekness. I'm so used to it that my sister's MBP (non-Retina) feels extremely thick to me. Battery life is nice and the kb/touchpad are good enough that I don't go looking for an external mouse and I can type essays without a problem. The display is probably the low part as its viewing angles aren't the greatest, but if you get to a specific angle and leave it at that it feels fine. It's matte too, so no reflections preventing you from seeing the screen. The 2014 model is probably a bit over your budget, but it fixes the screen and gets more performance, at the cost of battery life and a slight increase in thickness. I picked up my 2013 for $1600 flat last April when they did a college discount, it seems to be going for around that on Amazon right now.

All of the thin form factor gaming laptops get hot, while gaming.

I'd rather have a bulkier laptop which stays cooler, such as the GT60 Dominator, with GTX 870M.

Ok guys i need some help.

Im in the market for a gaming laptop for around $1200. I really like how thin the Razer blade is but just cant afford the $1600-2000 price tag. The Alienware laptop is like twice as thick as my laptop now lol so i dont want that. What is a good laptop that would compare to that but in my price range. Im looking for thin as possible with nvidia and intel. Anything that can run everything thats coming out at atleast high.

Look at gigabyte p34g, sager np7738, MSI gs60 ghost. Only one of those in your price range though.

Country: US
Budget: $1300
Size: I think I'd prefer a 17", but maybe I can live with 15. Never really used a laptop extensively before.
Usage: I'd I like to play games at least on Medium, but Dota 2 on High. The PC will be used mostly for work, which is web development. It also involves Photoshop and Premiere.
Misc: I think I'd like to keep it as portable as possible, while still packing some punch. I don't know how realistic this is. It'll be used mostly when travelling, but I also intend to use it as a studio PC at home for audio recording and mixing. I'm also not afraid to install component myself if it reduces the price. I'd also like the turnaround time to be less than three weeks, because I'll need it then.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I've been on an unhealthy steam summer sale binge during the last couple of days stocking on a massive catalog of pc games from classics to relatively recent titles.

The last time I gamed on pc was when the first Far Cry came out. So I'm on a mission to play all the best games that I missed out on! Even though a bunch of the games are available on consoles I just never got the chance to play some of em so this steam summer sale thing is gonna make it all happen finally. Hell I never played half life 2 and I can't wait to dive into that.

Anyway! Mt current laptop is nothing special and it can barely run Left for Dead 2. It almost died trying to run Witcher 2, although Metro Last Light managed to run pretty decently under low settings. The only game so far to run butter smooth is Star Wars Battlefront II, lol so clearly I need something better.

I'm no expert on PC specs and such so I figured this may be the best place to ask. I know most would recommend building my own pc or something but I need a new laptop anyway.

So GAF any ideas? Much appreciated!

Do you just want to be able to play older games at decent settings, or do you want it to be able to keep up with newer games? Need more info really - can you fill in the questions from the opening post?

Just talking to your question of size - I'd stick with 15". You mention travelling and needing to be portable, and a 17" will not be good for that. I can understand why you think you might want one for the larger screen size, but as the resolution probably won't be different then I'd go for the smaller size. Plus when at home you could have a separate monitor if you want to game on a bigger screen or use two screens to have more space to work with (eg for premiere)

the lenovo y510p sounds like it would suit you very well

Hi there GAF .. please bare with me .. I've managed to construe a bit of a conundrum for myself ..

I had planned on getting an MSI Ghost Pro GS60 in around September as I'll be heading back to college night classes for a CompSci course and figured I'd go mad with a Laptop that could double as a gaming lapper in my spare time.

I've a Panny GT60 so all I require is to output games at ultra at 1080p (Witcher 3 in particular).

But the closer I get to purchase time, and after spending time in this thread, I'm beginning to consider just building a PC for home (HAZ's Enthusiast would come in around 1100Euros) and then spend the remainder on a College Laptop with a somewhat decent screen, processor etc (I plan on doing some Data Analytics and Modelling so could do with a GPU for the processing power in the laptop too)

So what would GAF recommend? Would Haz's Enthusiast be upgradable to 4K if I ever get around to upgrading my TV? Any recommendations on a Mid-Level Laptop with a killer screen and lightweight? Lenovo? Asus? I'm a tad out of touch with the latest lappers as I've just been focused on the MSI Ghost Pro this year, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks and sorry for the long post .. .

TLDR: Stick with purchasing the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro or split and get a HAZ Enthusiast PC and a mid-range laptop with the remainder of the funds?

Apologies too .. in keeping with OP ... details would be as follows:

Country where it will be purchased: Ireland / Europe
Maximum budget. EUR1000

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight). - 15" Screen

Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all). -
Steam Gaming .. some data modelling, College Stuff relative to CompSci

Resolution and settings: Max Possible for budget I suppose.

Any other requirements: Preferably lightweight .. or as near as. 'Future-proofed' for 3-5 years spec-wise (blowing a savings budget so won't be able to splurge for a while once the plunge is taken)

So guys, I've been looking for a new laptop and someone mentioned the MSI Gaming Series GE70 2PC-079XNL to me. These are it's specs.

Screen 17,3" (Full HD LED 1080p)
Processor Intel Core i5-4200H 3,0GHz
HDD 750GB 7200RPM
RAM 8GB DDRIII 1333MHz
PGU Nvidia GTX 850M 2GB

Now my question is, anyone familiar with this series? And if so, how well does it perform?

Ok, so I'm in need of a gaming laptop that's pretty powerful. I've had my eye on the new Razer Blade but I'm not sure how laptop specs compare to desktop specs. I've built a couple gaming PC's in the past but since then sold them and replaced everything in my house with Apple products. So my desktop is now an iMac....hence the reason I want a gaming laptop instead of a desktop. So here we go:

Country where it will be purchased: USA
Maximum budget: $1500 - $2000
Max size 15 - 17 inches
Planned usage: Minimum resolution of 1920x1080. I consider myself to be a heavy gamer. But I'd like to use the laptop for PC exclusive games like Tera, World of Warcraft, and my Steam library which consists of tons of games that I've accumulated over the years. The laptop will be used strictly for gaming. As I prefer Apple's OS for everything else.

Now my question is, anyone familiar with this series? And if so, how well does it perform?

I'm not a fan of the dual core CPU. The GE60 is just a bit more, and packs a quad core.

Would you want to be closer to $1500 or $2000?

I'm not a fan of the dual core CPU. The GE60 is just a bit more, and packs a quad core.

True, however that means I'm also reducing in size. ( 17 inch vs 15 inch ). And it's gonna be a gift from my parents so it's not like I can say "Mom, dad, I found something more then the 1000$ you guys are already willing to give me". ;)

Also, from what I'm hearing that i5 is running on almost the same power the i7 does.

So the y50 looks sick.

They have one with a UHD 4k display for about 200 more, but its only a 860m 4gb. wouldnt I just be better off getting the standard 1080 or would there be benefits to getting the 4k?

Looks nice and 720p would scale better due to 4k being divisible by 720p without a remainder.

Last year I purchased a budget gaming desktop PC, with the intention of upgrading it later on. Attempted to do this last week and suffice to say, things did not go well and I no longer have that desktop. Buying replacement parts was going to be almost as much as a new PC, so I decided to forget about that and go all out with a better, higher-end PC that I won't need to do anything with.

Settled on the Sager NP7338 after having problems trying to order an Alienware X51 from Dell (Dell Sales were great; their financial dept. was a real problem dealing with). Good choice?

Specs:

Display 13.3" Full HD LED-Backlit Display with Wide Viewing Angle in Matte Finished Surface (1920 x 1080)
Video & Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPU with 2GB GDDR5 Video Memory
CPU Processor 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4810MQ Processor ( 6MB L3 Cache, 2.80GHz)
Thermal Compound IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU
Operating System Genuine MS Windows® 8.1 64-Bit Edition
Memory 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz - 2 X 8GB
mSATA SSD Drive Slot 1 120GB Crucial M5 Series mSATA3 SSD - as an OS Drive (Primary Drive C)
Hard Disk Drive 1 1TB 7200rpm SATA2 Hard Drive
Wireless Network Card Internal 802.11 B+G+N Wireless LAN + Bluetooth Combo Module
Primary Battery Smart Li-ION Battery Pack (6 Cells)

Looking forward to going from gaming on low-medium settings to high-ultra settings!

Probably closer to $1500 but if I absolutely have to, I don't mind migrating towards the $2000 price.

Depending on what games you're playing, one of these would probably suffice.

True, however that means I'm also reducing in size. ( 17 inch vs 15 inch ). And it's gonna be a gift from my parents so it's not like I can say "Mom, dad, I found something more then the 1000$ you guys are already willing to give me". ;)

Whoever told you that has no idea what they're talking about. The new consoles have obsoleted dual cores.

How does this laptop fair in comparison to the Razer Blade?

Cheaper but looks massive in comparsion.

It compares around the same as the 14" model except in 17", a lower-res, non-touch screen, and HDD instead of SSD.

Has a stronger GPU than 17" Blade, also non-touch and has HDD instead of SSD.

Alright LapTop Gaf, just wanted to follow up after I made my purchase.

Originally I was going to go with the Razer Blade 2013 on sale for $1600. Its built really well and super thin which I loved but the price was alil steep for something that competitors offer for $1000.

I decided to go with the Lanovo Y50 from Newegg, it was the newegg exclusive edition that comes with 16gb of DDR3 ram for under $1200. I must say that im f*cking impressed. This thing is a beast! There isnt a game yet that ive thrown at it that it cant handle on high or ultra at 30fps at the least. Its still light and super thing, under an inch, but can be alil flimsy so dont expect to be able to throw it around like a mac. Best thing about this laptop is the price points though, you can get one from $999.99 all the way up to $1600. There are models for every $100, but if you go with the cheapest now you can upgrade it down the road.

Of course Amazon emails me today and lets me know about the MSI GE70 Apache pro-012 is now on sale for 1299.99 which has some minor gaming centric upgrades but is about the same as the Lanovo Y50. Main difference is the Lanovo comes with a external usb dvd drive and the MSI has it built in..... Not an issue for me since i dont even have one on my PC lol so now i have an external one that can be used for either!

Just got a Gigabyte P34v2. Was pleasantly surprised it was a i7-4710HQ even though the store page said 4700HQ. Unfortunately updating the EFI meant I had to install windows etc a second time because it no longer recognized the MBR it had assigned the drives the first time around, so I haven't had time to test anything yet.

Is the CPU up to the task of PS2 emulation? Guessing Dolphin is out of the question...

Depending on what games you're playing, one of these would probably suffice.

Whoever told you that has no idea what they're talking about. The new consoles have obsoleted dual cores.

It's not like I'm expecting to play the latest games in 5 years anyway.

My current laptop has an i5 and did a fine job running everything I wanted it too. I mean, for all the AAA Next gen titles I got a PC with an i7, 12GB RAM and a GTX 670 to keep me happy.

As I mentioned before, considering it's a gift, I'm already happy my parents are willing to get me this laptop. I am in no position to demand a laptop that's 150 euro's more and that's only faster.

So, I have been looking at slim and somewhat powerful laptops. Im a bit confused between GIGABYTE P35W v2-CF1 and the MSI GS60 GhostPro-052

Now, the main difference from what I notice is that the 870 on the Gigabyte has 6 gb ram vs the 3 gb ram on the MSI. Is that really a big deal? Personally, I want the MSI but I would rather go for the better performance machine. However, I would also like a better screen. Im not sure which one has a better screen.

Help me gaf, Im not really a PC gamer person but I have the opportunity to get a new laptop and I might as well get a nice slim one.

Hi there,

I am a Canadian who has been looking around for a gaming laptop between 800-9000$. I was looking at the Lenovo Y40 since it is currently on sale for 899 (http://shop.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y40/) but I can't tell if this laptop is supposed to be good or not.
Is this a good laptop too go for? Or is there anything better on the market at the moment?
Ultimately any screen between 14 to 16'' would be fine with me, and being able to do any PS2 emulation would be a plus (if you can even do that at this price point)

The Y40 is considered good, probably the best you can get at that price point.

Hey guys! I have been thinking about a new laptop for quite some time now, and I decided I need to figure out what my options are.

I'm from the Netherlands, and I would like to keep my budget between 500-1000 euros.
I currently have a 15,6 inch laptop, which seems like the ideal size to me. Weight doesnt really matter.

If possible I would like it to run Rome 2 Total War rather smoothly, and perhaps Chivalry Medieval Warfare on higher settings.

Hope you can help me out!

Does anyone recommend IC Diamond thermal paste? I was configuring the GS60 on Xotic PC and I noticed that was an option for the thermal paste.

Hey just wanted to give you an update just incase your still wondering about Dolphin running on ur machine. I tried out Wind Waker on mine which has the 4700HQ and it runs fine, 60fps at the least for me but some games I guess wont work as well. Im gunna try some more and see but so far Wind Waker and Xenoblade have been great on it. Good thing too because tbh I wasnt even thinking about processor speed when looking for a laptop to purchase.
