i wonder how much backlash these hires are gonna get?

Yes, because straight white guys don't deserve jobs or career progression these days.

edit - Who is this guy anyway?

like a week's worth of "twitter outrage" then no one will care about anything (or as much as you can care to bitch about it on social media) until a lady video game character is scantily clad on the cover of some throw away title or people start talking about Far Cry 4 some more.

So, I'm guessing because it's nearing the end of the day and there hasn't been any mention on the site yet that they are making/made a video? And will post it at the end of the day?

I don't mean to sound too callous here, but who gives a flying fuck? If it is indeed Dan, it should be pretty obvious by the reaction that he is a perfect fit for the role and both GB and fans are excited about it. I'm sure whoever is in the video role was hired for the right reasons too.

Were these white guys the best applicants for their positions? I'd be pretty surprised if they weren't. Just give it a rest.

Off-topic, but while we've all been on Giant Bomb hire watch, something crazy happened (for those that care): Beloved cult TV show Community has been brought back to life by Yahoo of all places.

So bizarre. I had just gotten used to the idea that it was over. I trust that Harmon can put out another solid season though.

Do any of you watch GB stuff with 'other people'?

I wish. I've introduced people to it but nobody got into it. People mostly think it's weird that I pay money for a website.

Woah, what the hell?

Yeah, I know. I went over to IGN, just to make sure the photo from earlier was fake and the Community news was the first thing I saw. There's a thread in OT. Funny thing is in the show's main thread in one page it went from sadness (the actors' contracts were supposed to expire today) to sheer jubilation (when the news was announced).

I am just happy they hired guys with a bunch of experience.

I cant imagine the amount of applications from Giant bomb fans who just want to hang around with Jeff the HR people had to sift through.

Listen to the Bombcast with my boyfriend, and sometimes watch QLs with him if the game interests him. But most content I watch by myself, I don't really know many other people interested in games other than Fifa and COD.

He says "I'm just getting REALLY bored by my own perspective being mirrored constantly", as if someone's perspective on video games had anything to do with their gender or skin color or sexual orientations...

Don't want to be rude but.....who is Frank Cifaldi and how's this his business?

Some guy on twitter who believes he knows what is best for GB and their recruitment policy.

Of course I'm sure he is going to put his money where his mouth is and tender his resignation from his employer tomorrow to allow further diversity in his workplace.

They're probably just doing a bunch of paperwork and orientation activities today. I wouldn't expect anything, but would definitely like something.

And recording the Bombcast. Jeff confirmed on Mixlr that they would be doing that.

Y'all should really read his whole series of tweets before insulting him. He's actually being very reasonable and fair

Yeah, he seems like a big fan of the site.

That's a pretty shitty way to attempt to downplay what is actually a pretty valid criticism.

While I agree, Dan will be an absolutely perfect fit, I would definitely have loved to see a little diversity added to the crew. That said, diversity for diversity's sake is not the way to go IMO, so if these two guys were the best picks from the bunch I am ok with that.

Also I need to go to bed soon & they haven't made this official. I'm really scared to go to sleep in case I miss some amazing wrestling-esque livestream with heel turns & such.

remember at their pax panel when that random dude told the guys to fuck off or something along those lines and it was really awkward?

I hope you get the context for that tweet

He says "I'm just getting REALLY bored by my own perspective being mirrored constantly", as if someone's perspective on video games had anything to do with their gender or skin color or sexual orientations...

Someones perspective on videos games is absolutely affected by gender, skin color, and sexual orientation.

Would have been one less to sift through if you didn't send one in.

I see where he's coming from (even if he does sound a bit douchey), but you can't begrudge Jeff thinking about what the site needs. He's lost two of the sites biggest personalities (granted Vinny isn't really gone, but he's gone from GB 'proper') and he needs to replace them. To do that he needs big, charismatic personalities that are ready to go now. The site can't even afford another Patrick who'll take nearly a year to find his footing.

Unfortunately this means going to his 'rolodex' and grabbing a known quantity rather than experimenting with someone new who'll take time to settle and get comfortable.

I'd bet £20 on their next hire being a woman.

Frank Cifaldi looks exactly like the new hires

Maybe Frank should quit and give his job to a black lady? Nah, didn't think so. It is always someone else who should be responsible for hiring a diverse demographic. how about you start your own site and then you can make a difference.

Nothing wrong with what that Frank Cifaldi said. I've thought the same thing myself. But if the right/good enough people come along and they happen to be the same race as everyone else, you don't turn them away because they aren't a certain way.

I wonder how many white guys work at frank's canadian developer.

I bet most.

it's a pretty ridiculous criticism to have, and I kind of hope GB ignores him.

I think if they got the work visa thing ironed out, Cara Ellison would easily be a top contender. I've always liked her, but I was surprised at how well she fit in on that panel, however briefly.

considering they had to get hired through a huge corporation's HR department (and having some experience with that myself), I reeaaaaally doubt there was any kind of shifty business involved.

What have you contributed to society?

Why do that when you can be self-righteous on Twitter? Much easier.

Frank Cifaldi has more than earned the right to criticise GB. Dude has worked his arse off over the years on Lost Levels amongst other things. Besides, he could be Joe Nobody and it's a perfectly valid line of questioning.

The defensiveness needs to stop.

nah, he hasn't. If he was talking about how they cover games then he has earnt an opinion, but unless he has experience of being a boss and hiring staff he has no cause to start throwing stones.

I actually like Frank but snide comments on twitter are not helping anyone.

Criticism can be criticized, too. Me and many others find "white man? Bad hire!" to be poor criticism.

Just because you criticize something doesn't mean your own viewpoint can't be challenged.

It's funny how people in this thread will criticise anything & everything about GB but the second someone outside of here does the same it's all hands on deck to call them out.

It's ok to disagree with Frank but doing so by just saying "who is this?" or calling his thoughts "dumb" isn't really adding much. At least take the time to put together a more thoughtful post than that.

"I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming they didn't attract diverse candidates, but either way I'm sad." That isn't valid from anyone. Nobody has earned the right to be daft.

I would find his criticism more relevant if we were talking about a business that had at least a couple dozen employees, not just half a dozen.

Gender, Orientation, Race, those can all affect the perspective someone has on games.

But you know what else can?

Having a father die early.

Formerly being part of a band.

Formerly working at a game developer.

Being married.

Having a child.

Having a shotgun pointed in your face on the streets of Petaluma.

Growing up on a farm, having a high school class of under fifty or whatever it was.

Growing up in the South.

Not all white guys are the same.

Cringed when his bio on twitter said 'yet another white guy making games.' Guess it's being mindful of your privilege. I still think Dan and his friend are a great addition to the crew. Would've loved some diversity but this gig seems pretty demanding and Dan fit all the right notes to be able to land the job.

Did you mean to quote someone else?

Of course, I should have been more clear.
I just don't think people are entirely defined by skin color or gender, and I don't think all straight white males have the same perspective on everything.

This should be the voice over narration during the trailer for Giant Bomb: The Movie

His viewpoint was "that's disappointing", and the challenge has been "this nobody should put a sock in it".

We don't know who all sent in applications.
We don't know who they had to choose from.
We don't know the qualifications of the men/women of any race or nationality that DID apply and did not get hired.

Dan and Jason are two industry veterans. And likely some of the most qualified people to apply for the job.

If you an point me to a person who is
A) Applied for the job
B) Is as qualified as Dan and Jason
C) and is in any respect a minority

then you can complain. But until those things are known, people who are complaining that it is two white dudes are making some huge assumptions about Giant Bomb. That they ignored women and minorities just so they could hire two white men.

And to be clear. I am not saying that qualified women/minorities do not exist. We just don't even know if they applied for the job.

So far most of the people named are not even near the same league as a guy like Dan.

As if it doesn't? You're not seriously suggesting that what are for some people integral parts of their identify don't shape how they approach games or other media?

Because speaking from experience it absolutely can.

See above.

This is the part where I really should consider not giving opinions when not speaking or writing in my mother tongue because I never get the right point across. x)

yes, it was meant to quote the whole conversation - missed the other guy off the top. Wasn't aiming that at you or him - just at the subject in general. sorry.
