Oh yeah, I know 8-4 exists, but yeah I would hope that they would Quick Look more Japanese games and so on, but it doesn't seem like anything that they're interested in covering since they simply don't play any of those types of games. Brad will QL a random FF game and Jeff will do a musou game to talk about how stupid they are. lol

Looking at these threads he made I do remember a few. I guess he was really active here before...maybe even had fun? However now when he talks about GAF (or mentioned) he seems to always make a "ugh that place" kind of expression/comment. Did he have a falling out or is that the cool thing to do? Seems like it's the cool thing to make fun of GAF or say it sucks.

I'm watching the latest Alex and Vinny video. Can someone tell me why Vinny is looking as if he's resting on his side, all the while playing on his laptop ?
 
I haven't listened to 8-4 in ages. Is McDonnel still contractually obligated to curse every sentence? I used to think it was cool but I also thought soul patches were cool about a decade ago.

I wouldn't say it sucks, its hit or miss for me, based on who is on the couch with Danny & Chris. Like both those guys, Mary Kish seems cool... but a lot of the rest of the GS crew are kind of ... boring to me... thats my only real problem with it, maybe if I was more invested in the GS community I would feel differently but I usually tune into the Lobby based on the non GS guests, like when Jeff or Greg Miller were on.

I am happy with Dan getting hired, people can wish that it was "not another white dude" but in this case I dont know of anyone I think fits the site better than him, even if I could pick from anyone in the games industry... I get the validity of diversity, not denying its something that the industry needs more of, its just a tough discussion to have when the one thing people seemed to not want (another white dude) is so perfect for the job.

I wonder how many women even applied for the position, I kind of wonder how many women would want to get the treatment that the GB crew gets, the members of the site are pretty open with their lives, I could see that being a turn off for a lot of women... the amount of attention that Robyn got after being in like 5 seconds of the GB East video is kind of weird...

Every female member of a podcast that I have really liked now works in PR/Community management... Abbie Heppe, Anne Lewis, Lizzie Cuevas to name a few, so the number of female games journalists is small to begin with and then if any of them show a good personality that people like some company seems to scoop them up really fast, which probably makes it even harder to find good female candidates for a position like the one they just hired for...

at the end of the day it's Jeff's site really, he can hire who he wants and if people are turned off there are other sites out there with other voices, these sites are more entertainment than journalism, gotta do whats best for business which means putting out a product that people will visit the site to see, so going with an easy fit like Dan makes good business sense too.
 
Their bafflement at Hatsune Miku still resonates to this day.

Yeah I agree with you on that respect. I'm not THAT into Japanese games, but I do appreciate a good JRPG or Nintendo game, and it sucks Alex seems to be the only one into Mario Kart and Jeff just kind of shit all over it in the Quick Look.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I've ventured away from 8-4 recently. I curse, you probably curse, everyone curses, but that was getting a little extreme. Plus, he should change his nickname to Mark "Ummmm" MacDonald for as much as I hear that each episode.

I like it, it's a good recap of what's happening in gaming. Not too long, not too short. I skip a lot of it, of course, but that's because I watch other stuff, too.

edit: I swear there was a Falling Down photoshop of Rorie somewhere, but I can't find it. Did it exist?
 
at least 8-4've mostly stopped casually saying rape or retarded. Heck, I think almost every podcast I listen to has stopped doing that.

Come to think of it, I think only GB has ever not irritated me with that. Even Idle Thumbs made a couple of really casual usages of the term 'rape' early in their run, from what I remember.

I totally forgot about that. I am struggling with IdleThumbs because of Danielle's "you know" "like" barrage then not addressing actual gameplay content. Hope it gets better.

I really didn't like Patrick's need to overtalk/yell when first starting the bombcast but found his places to talk and now look forward to his content. I think the F1 cast is helping Drew do the opposite: be more vocal.

I vaguely remember hearing some of that stuff super early when I did a relisten of the entire run when I was commuting for 2 hours last year. Threw me a bit.

I fully believe if Cara Ellison would have been able to get through the bullshit that is emigrating to the US she would have been the hire (if she wanted it). From what Danny said it was a complete nightmare for him and Gamespot. She would have been perfect. I know very little of Dan, and what I have seen of him isn't great. But hey I trust Jeff.

They've only got one new main member, and Drew will use the new tech guy to lighten his load I guess. So I still see the main crew including him.

I think if either of them were the least bit nervous about the possibility of appearing on camera at practically any time of day that they would have found a different place to work.

Something about them not having enough tables for him to use the mouse and I think some of the cables were pretty short.

Well she is working out of SF and Alex said she was to be in NY for a few weeks - so maybe she does have a visa. She is primarily a writer though and it seems clear they were looking for seasoned on screen talent.

Yeah, onboarding takes time, especially for two new people. Add all the shit CBSi makes them do, plus the stuff Jeff has to do as a direct report (maybe Drew too?) and I wouldn't be surprised if even the podcast ends up being a late one.

Weird, half on this playlist work and I swear one that was just working a second ago stopped. That's weird.

I wonder if Dan requested them taken down or someone at GI is being vindictive because two people left? I can't imagine him leaving means they have to take them down as content you produce for an employer remains theirs after they leave (unless you're a big shot and have a great contract).

It's REALLY weird to listen to old 1up era podcasts, where Ryan Scott would sarcastically tell people to go to R-word.com any time hey made a retard joke, and everyone tell him to shut up, or the constant gay jokes and the like.

Getting something temporary for 6 months or so isn't that hard, she also could just be on a travel visa. But getting something longer seems a much longer process. But you could be right in that her experience is mostly written. She just seems to do so well on the GB streams that she seems like a natural for it.

I swear Mark has said "retarded" recently (past 6 months). It's so hard not to be biased against him due to his language usage, he sometimes sounds awfully similar to a 13-year-old.
 
Eh, doesn't matter if he didn't mean bad, it is bad.

Which is actually why I'm impressed by Ryan immediately apologising after the F outburst. He definitely didn't mean anything bad for gay people but knew that it's a word that really stigmatises them.

Also would new hires be new-thread worthy?
