Wouldn't that be a stepback? Brawl had better "methods" by virtue of either unlocking to SSE, matches played, or something special.

SSE unlocked way too much, and the characters unlocked way too easily. I'd rather they make it at least as hard as Melee (not that it was hard then).

Melee has special ways also of unlocking characters, like the cases of Luigi and Ganondorf as far as I can remember. I just hope that unlocking characters is more scattered in game modes, not just in one go like SSE.
 
I honestly think Sakurai will reveal all the characters before launch, but they'll still be unlockable.

Like I think even among the characters we have now like Lucario, Toon Link, etc. who we think are starters, I wouldn't be surprised if they still have to be unlocked.
 
Guess that means even if some of who we've seen are unlockable (Luigi/T.Link/3rd parties) Marth is still a starter now, since it'd be weird to have one of the 14 Amiibo's not immediately usable with the game.

You don't actually play as your Amiibos so I don't see why you shouldn't be able to scan in a character that you haven't unlocked yet.

I know this is kinda a joke post, but I really want to see what her 4 standard specials are.

And yeah; I think at least 80% of the characters will be shown before launch, but I'd be surprised if, like, Marth, Luigi, Lucario, or the third parties aren't unlockable; I'm still pretty sure he said Luigi was still unlockable when the announced him, or something along those lines? Either way, they made it clear he was supposed to be an exception, but I doesn't look like they stuck with that idea.

I wish it was as easy as Melee. It was so hard for me and my friends to unlock the final three characters, because there was no way we were playing through the great maze or whatever.

I'll try to be excited for the stage but so far, it just sounds badly designed.

Yeah, it was a bit disconcerting as a Mac fan, but it was also somewhat refreshing to see that Bowser has seen some considerable buffs over his previous iterations.

The problem with Reset Bomb Forest is that the platforms are all slightly too small and too far apart for combat, and thus you're forced into constantly jumping around. The alcove on the left side of the second phase is basically a death trap. It's interesting because Palutena's Temple looks to be like a deadlier and even more massive version of Temple from Melee. It seems like Sakurai was focused less on playability and more on scale and detail when he was crafting the Kid Icarus levels for this Smash.

Surviving a KO punch at 200%? Jeeeezusss... Either Bowser's weight has been increased to 999, or momentum cancelling is back in full force from Brawl.

Considering how characters were able to return to the stage even after being knocked off into out-of-bounds bubble territory, I'd be inclined to say that momentum canceling is playing a part in some of these crazy survival stories.

cheesecake is god tier

Yes. Yesyesyes. Oh, how I miss real cheesecake. Japan only really has this weird quasi-souffle fluffcake that they try to pass off as "baked cheesecake", but it's just not the same. So excited to have real cheesecake again in a couple weeks!

Nice impressions Masked Man. Hoping for some adjustments on general survivability.

It would be nice, certainly. The upside is that higher survivability makes for longer and (perhaps) more "epic" matches, but I feel like battles might also drag on for quite some time. Characters able to keep their distance by camping might end up having an inherent advantage if the team doesn't adjust the knockback, momentum, and survivability parameters.

That's definitely goes with what I've been hearing and seeing. I wonder if he'll get a slight boost in the final build but it's not a deal breaker for me with Mac.

Honestly, it didn't bother me at all. The Jolt Haymaker was always enough to get me back to the stage (or at least the ledge), and I don't think I ever fell low enough that I needed to recover vertically. Mac is just such a fun and exhilarating character to play! He's already secured himself a spot as one of my mains.

Kinda makes it sound like Mario Kart 8. Characters will be unlockable, but they won't be hidden (you could just use an amiibo and have them show up as a CPU before you unlock them).
