Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

But Cara Elison, Kat Bailey, Daniel Riendeau are all good examples I think. I particularly like the former two.

But I agree Jeff Green would have also been an underrepresented demographic and I honestly think that is held against him too. I mean who the fuck has more experience in the game's industry than Jeff Green? Yet the dude ended up going game testing pretty much admitting it wasn't his first choice of gigs because he couldn't find a gig doing what he's most qualified to do.

I think Daniel would have been a really good choice, but she has only been on my radar for a few weeks or so because of her recent and frequent Idle Thumbs appearances. I think she wants to stay with Polygon though, so who knows if she even applied.

Jeff Green found a job before Giant Bomb was hiring. Who knows if this would have worked out differently if he was actively looking during the hiring process.

But shouldn't the person who is the most qualified, who the hiring manager, in this case Jeff Gerstmann, thinks will do the best job regardless of race or gender?

That said anybody attacking people on twitter is gross and should stop. People need to calm themselves.

ok so thats pretty shitty on her part, but again, that doesn't give a bunch of giantbomb fans the right to attack her in giantbomb's honor

i hope jeff calls these people out on a stream or something

In the end, if she would stop poking the fire and insulting the GB community she would fall back into annonimity and the insults would stop. Now, I'm not defending people insulting her in any way but she's in part responsible for what's happening... or at least for the fact that it's still happening.

I wish the internet wouldn't always be the internet sometimes.

And did a GB mod do something they shouldn't have? I wonder whats going on with that.

Welp, there goes any sensible discussion. The internet is full of shitheads, and they will invariably harass and threaten anyone who holds an opposing position - especially when it's a woman. And that is always, always what the discussion ends up revolving around. Suey Park got excused for her narcissism and hijacking of Native American causes because she got harassed, Amanda Marcotte's rally cries around false rape allegations are ignored because got harassed, and the list will always go on. Anyone with any lick of sense stands on the same side against internet harassment, trolling, and threats, but that rather banal fact is going to rise above all other discourse.

Well I suppose we won't see Leigh Alexander on Giant Bomb any time soon then?

I mean, after that e3, I would have been surprised if she showed up between then and now. Sometimes you just gotta cut your losses.

And sometimes you burn your bridges.

With Napalm.

Guys, not 12 hours ago we were instructed not to bring up tweets and posts from people (ESPECIALLY Leigh Alexander), if we're just going to complain about them.

How does making the tweet remarks and deleting them help the situation.. if she didnt make those every so often.. people would have let it be by now I think it was a long ago.

She's intentionally riling people up now, like some sort of psycho vicious circle.. and I have enjoyed her appearances in shut up and sit down.. but man..

True, those tweets are inflammatory.

But as a member of the Giant Bomb community, I'd rather focus on what we can do to improve things. And I think one thing would be letting that go, including 775.

no she's not. so because she's being an idiot that excuses the giantbomb community(well, a small part of it) being fucking idiots? it doesnt work that way
both sides are wrong. and as classless as leigh's tweet was, it doesnt somehow make everyone being pieces of garbage toward her justified

Hitting back at people insulting her - even if she blames a whole sites community for some idiots - is understandable but those tweets insulting the staff just seem childish. Glad that the GB staff are staying classy.

Didn't know that mess was happening at reddit as well. Must be though to be a mod right now, poor Rorie and friends.

The discussion is everywhere. Even Mixlr chat got heated this afternoon, though it managed to stay civil until everyone shouted themselves out.

That reddit thread though...whooboy...wow.

Just...geeze.

I will say that the bolded plus the Greg Miller antics not resulting in anywhere near the same reaction as Leigh's drunken night have made me somewhat uncomfortable.

It's difficult to argue against the idea that there's at least an appearance of a double-standard.

I think what's different about the two is that in one case, a person was obnoxiously dominating a conversation while in the other, a person was just being a goofball. Maybe I'm just biased because I genuinely like Greg Miller.

Considering what she went through and continues to go through her comment shouldn't phase anyone. Makes perfect sense. I would be angry too.
Yes, but her kicking the hornet's nest again after so many years just completely derails a lot of the good conversation that was happening here, on GB and elsewhere.

And she knows that happens too.

What she obviously wants is a public apology from GB, but doesn't want to say it because that's admitting it still bothers you.

Nobody knows about the hiring procedures really. That's fair enough. And I don't think anybody is arguing that GB crew intentionally stonewalled any other voices. But I do find it hard to believe there weren't any really qualified people who could have offered a different perspective. I mean I would agree that Ryckert seems like a "good fit" in that he pretty much has the same taste and cultural background as the rest of the GB crew. But that's also part of the problem.

As I said earlier, it's not just a problem in the sense of (unintentionally) shutting out other potentially worthwhile candidates, it's also a bummer for viewers who are robbed of the chance of someone who genuinely has different perspectives and tastes and can contribute more to a lively conversation about games and gaming culture.

That moment when you realise the editorial side of the games industry has been in a really messed up place for some time now.

Jeez.

Man... these people making a fuss are one sad goddamn group.

I'm not excusing parts of the GB community, but with this blowing up on the worst part of Reddit and that Reddit thread starting with abuse against the woman who has recieved the most abuse on Twitter...I think it's safe to say that most of this shit is coming from people who don't really care about anything other than abusing what they percieve as "SJW" people.

I really can't help but sit and laugh at all the people that actually care what gender/race/nationality/sexuality/whatever they hired. I absolutely could not possibly care less about any of these characteristics. Too bad for the GB crew to have to hear all this worthless criticism though.

Did you even read what you just quoted? I said I'm not defending the morons who are insulting her. All I'm saying is that if she would have ignored them it would have died down naturally. Now instead she's replying to insults with other insults which just restart the whole cycle.

At some point you gotta have the maturity to move on with your life and not let the insults get to you.

What exactly did "the GB community" do? You guys keep saying "i'm not excusing them," "what they did was bad," etc., but what was it?

yeah i did read it. and you're right, she shouldn't fight fire with fire. but my point was, just because she's spitting insults out on twitter that doesnt excuse everyone else for attacking back
it goes both ways
both sides are being stupid here

It's not about other people being qualified. It's about being "most qualified" and that includes a variety of variables, including availability, willingness to relocate, etc.

Ultimately, it comes down to what the core crew felt. That's what's important for a personality-driven site like Giant Bomb.

That's one way to look at it, I guess. When she spits out insults on Twitter, those insults are getting broadcast to her 40,700 followers, not including any retweets. That's a pretty damn big group of people. I think the public nature of Twitter and its one-wayness make insults even more aggravating and encourage people to respond.

I don't know why anyone would waste their time yelling back at her, but anyone with have a brain should expect a large negative response when you are spitting venom out to a very large group of people on the Internet.
