Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

Jeebus, I've been running errands most of the day and didn't realize how this had been building up. This is bananas. I can understand criticism of the new hires, but high profile people that applied and didn't get the job taking swings at them on social media? Really?

What exactly did "the GB community" do? You guys keep saying "i'm not excusing them," "what they did was bad," etc., but what was it?

Abusing some people on Twitter, especially the person who's in the opening picture of the Reddit thread I quoted above. I'm not sure if the GB community is the main problem here, but Reddit's hateful sections.

This must suck for Jeff & co too...

the fuck at her response??

She is getting trolled by a part of the audience though. Thus she lashed out and responded to a valid vanilla question in an angry way. For example, Totalbiscuit has done the same in the past. His infamous "get cancer and die" reply tweet was amidst an torrent of abuse target at him.

People at both ends, who both have valid arguments are now pointing fingers at each other due to a few people stirring the pot in the middle

I think what's different about the two is that in one case, a person was obnoxiously dominating a conversation while in the other, a person was just being a goofball. Maybe I'm just biased because I genuinely like Greg Miller.
You learn in your early twenties (or earlier) if you're a fun drunk or obnoxious drunk. Then you act accordingly.

Greg, Dave Lang and Karen (from BLLSL) are fun drunks. Leigh isn't.

I'm not a fun drunk either, so I'd be damn sure to never drink heavily on the internet or around colleagues.

I think I'm going to wait a month to check this thread again. Just went over to the Giant Bomb boards and I see way more positivity than negativity. If you go looking for the negative, you'll find it, and if you drag it all to one place and pile it up, it makes it seem worse than what it really is. Based on what I'm looking at the majority of the response seems positive. You're never going to get 100% agreement on everything. I hope that Jeff and the crew are able to look past some of the jerks out there and realize that things are going in a very positive direction for Giant Bomb. Until then, I think I'm going to just enjoy my Bomb and Beast forum drama free for a while.

This honestly feels like GB just got caught in a crossfire of a war they mostly tried to avoid.

-GB hires two people
-Some people are disappointed cause they didn't hire other people
-Reddit
-Shitstorm

I'm not excusing parts of the GB community, but with this blowing up on the worst part of Reddit and that Reddit thread starting with abuse against the woman who has recieved the most abuse on Twitter...I think it's safe to say that most of this shit is coming from people who don't really care about anything other than abusing what they percieve as "SJW" people.

The Reddit thing is terrible and likely separate from actually caring about GB, but it's important to note that GB's community is complicit in a lot of this. This sort of thing happens in the forums, in chat, in comments, etc. and ignoring that doesn't help anyone.

Alex's tweets just now are pretty good.

Who the fuck cares about gender or race? What makes this industry so much different than others? You'd think people would worry more about the writing and quality of coverage than the people who write or create content for these sites. If you hire a woman, great! If you hire another white dude, great! It's still someone making content for a site that caters not only to fans but the broader spectrum of those who seek out reviews/quick looks/news. Arguing about this stuff gets us nowhere.

Do the folks that are losing their minds in this debate even know what Giant Bomb, at its core, actually is?

Video game sites. It is not like those before it.

yeah i did read it. and you're right, she shouldn't fight fire with fire. but my point was, just because she's spitting insults out on twitter that doesnt excuse everyone else for attacking back
it goes both ways
both sides are being stupid here

Exactly. In the end it's one person against a groupe of people. It's much easier for a single person to control what's happening than trying to control a group of raging internet people. Hence why I'm saying that she shouldn't be fighting back and just ignoring them and they will naturally get tired of it and move on to another shitty part of the internet.

I actually like Leigh a lot. Maybe she is having a bad day. I asked her about her thoughts about GB one time and while she didn't knock me down with enthusiasm, she didn't have anything negative to say either.

I think that if people constantly brought up something embarrassing from my past all the time then it would wear me down as well. I'm not saying that she was justified in putting GB on blast, but dealing with that stuff day in and day out must be absolutely toxic.

Of course, but the harshest tweets about transgender people etc. obviously come from that thread. That's how these Reddit shitstorms work.

Yes, but her kicking the hornet's nest again after so many years just completely derails a lot of the good conversation that was happening here, on GB and elsewhere.

And she knows that happens too.

What she obviously wants is a public apology from GB, but doesn't want to say it because that's admitting it still bothers you.

She got a ton of shit and no one cared. Ryan even contributed to it at the time. It's only recent that anyone has given a shit. I mean look at all the responses to Jeff's twitter post? "What happened?" "What are you talking about. link?" The amount of people who are still oblivious is staggering. Hiring more men and the shitty Giantbomb fans being shitty again I think justifies raging again.

Jesus Christ this is a huge fucking mess. Poor giant bomb

Who would have guessed it would go down like this huh?

I bet they expected some blow back for just hiring a friend of the site or maybe even the normal "they dont fit in with the group" stuff but here we are......

Also I still cant read SJW without thinking its some shitty wrestling federation.

Pretty sure her just even mentioning GB is equivalent to kicking the hornet's nest. She probably gets harassed every time she does. She reminds me of the Phil Fish twitter style, when Phil gets harassed, he loses judgment and makes it worse, since that seems to justify further abuse like a golden ticket to treat someone sub-human.

I really can't help but sit and laugh at all the people that actually care what gender/race/nationality/sexuality/whatever they hired. I absolutely could not possibly care less about any of these characteristics. Too bad for the GB crew to have to hear all this worthless criticism though.

Yeah man, females, and minorities being under-represented in games media, what a worthless criticism.

As a white straight male I really don't see what the big deal is with people feeling they are under represented in something that they enjoy. I feel represented just fine! What's the big deal? If they brought in a woman or minority they might talk about larger ideas in games instead of speaking dismissivly/vaguely about anything actually culturally important.

I mean did you hear the most recent Idle Thumbs? They had on a woman, and they had a really fun, hilarious podcast, and at the end had an honest and frank discussion about depictions of rape in art and video games. It made me look at things from a perspective I hadn't considered before and grow as a person. It was awful. Pass. More country beef emails please.

The whole sexism in video games gets really nasty most of the time. To the point that both sides of the argument are literally just insane and immature. That said, there is a part of the Giant Bomb community that is incredibly nasty. While I think both sides are absolutely ridiculous, answering fire with fire is so far from the solution.

Exactly this. I also feel like some of you here are thinking about things solely in the context of the thread/Giant Bomb rather than Leigh being an actual person who's had to live with this shit.

What the fuck is even happening anymore? Can we just give Vinny an open world game to play and laugh at the chaos he creates?

Eh, Jeff would represent a different demographic that's even more underutilized, the demographic of over 50 gamers. That's a mindset that you rarely get unless...well..you're listening to a podcast with Jeff Green.

Or Leo Laporte.

While I would really like a female cast member on GB, I can't think of anyone off the top of my head that I would classify as a good fit. The one person who I think would mesh well with the group is Tina Sanchez, and there's no way she's leaving Activision to back into games journalism.

I mean help me out. Who is a good female GB candidate? Every female games journalist I can think of right now is either freelance and questionable or working directly for a publisher.
I've really enjoyed Danielle Riendeau whenever she's been on Idle Thumbs recently.

If this is the behaviour that is accepted amongst Giant Bomb fans than I don't want to be a Giant Bomb fan. Disgusting.

Or you can be a Giant Bomb fan and define what's acceptable? This kind of hedging oneself as an outsider while being part of the community bothers the hell out of me. Very much a "GAF hivemind" type of comment.

Giant Bomb is not the only video games outlet on the Internet.

As you mentioned, there are also places like Idle Thumbs.

Not every place has to be the same. Jesus Christ.

People trying to change things to be what they want them to be instead of just finding things that are already what they want. Bothersome as hell.

Don't we have a GB forum correspondent? Myggen maybe? How are those guys taking it?

I haven't seen much shit there, really. But there's some bullshit there too and it's being moderated. Rorie said that they're banning some people, and they locked a couple of threads about the subject because they wanted to lock it down before anything started.

Also, I don't think anyone in here is saying that any of this is behaviour that should be acceptd. But on the other hand you shouldn't paint the whole community with this awful brush, especially since this shit has spilled over in a general "SJW war" with Reddit heavily involved. This has gone much further than just GB at this point.

Surprisingly it has been very positive over at GB Forums.

You mean regarding Dan and Jason? Oh sure, but I was referring to all this nonsense surrounding that. :(

Good to hear. Rorie's a pro at handling stuff like that.

Giant bomb is going to have to have a formal apologie or statement on this. It's getting really ugly fast. It's going to get much worse soon.

Nah, this is just the internet being the internet. People are getting mad over twitter and by next week this'll be old news.
